View Full Version : Neat Way to Save Money - $1.00 Challenge
JamesG 06-24-2020, 03:33 PM I saw some YouTube videos on this called the $1.00 challenge where you save money by keeping whatever $1.00 bills you have by the end of the day for a calendar year (Jan-Dec).
I decided to do this in January and keep my dollar bills in a Keurig Coffee box by my bed. We're almost in July and I managed to save $132, which is roughly $20 a month.
Some people say they do this to use for Christmas money when the end of the year comes. I've also seen the $5.00 bill challenge where people hang on to their $5.00 bills, as well as their singles.
ponytail 06-25-2020, 06:01 AM I've been doing that for years. I save a dollar a day and I call the collection my Christmas Kitty. It really helps! I also keep all my spare change, then every 3 months I roll them and take them to the bank to exchange for bills and add that to my Christmas Kitty.
OH Nuts! 07-04-2020, 07:13 PM Nice idea & to sweeten the pot you can add loose change leftover too.
JamesG 07-05-2020, 05:07 AM Yeah, I've been saving my change for each calendar year for a while now. I mentioned in another thread that I keep my quarters separate as I use them regularly (and also some local stores by me love getting quarters so I may save up to $5.00 or $10.00 and exchange it for cash).
My pennies, nickels, and dimes go in a small tin and I roll them up to take to the bank around the end, or beginning, of the year. I usually have between $25.00 - $30.00 and I deposit it into my savings. Last year I had $45.69 and I deposited $40.50 since I didn’t have enough to fill the coin rolls. The rest went back in the tin.
What a great idea, I'll give it a try and see how I make out at the end of the year.

Cool. I'm going to post how much I made out by the end of the year.
I'm trying not to keep a head-count so I will be surprised at the amount, I probably have over $150.00 now.
JamesG 11-01-2020, 03:22 AM From Jan. 1st - Nov. 1st I managed to save $221.00 in singles.
I'm going to the bank sometime soon to exchange $200 in singles for $20's. I have another month to go (until Dec. 1st) to get some more dollar bills.

You're doing really good. That will come in handy for Christmas. I didn't start until July but I'm hoping it will add up to at least $150 by the middle of Dec. I put an empty cereal box with a hole cut out at the top to collect my singles. I stashed it in the back of the pantry where nobody ever goes.

That's still pretty good.
Chocolate Moose 11-04-2020, 10:34 AM that's great it worked for you i tried it when my kids were small and ran out of money so many times, i had to stop.
JamesG 11-06-2020, 04:22 AM I went to the bank the other day and exchanged 200 singles for 10 twenties. I decided to seal that money inside an envelope and put it back in my singles box so that I'm not tempted to use it.
TVShowAddict 11-08-2020, 09:10 PM I always save change, when jar gets full, I take it to the bank, I usually have between $120 to $130 in change
JamesG 12-01-2020, 03:46 PM The total from January 1 - December 1, 2020 was $243.00 in singles.
You did really well, are you going to spend it on Christmas presents or something else? I'm gonna wait until around the 15th to check mine. My aim is for $150 but I'll probably end up short of that total.

It’s going towards PlayStation 5.
^ I counted up my ones. I had $139, not bad but I was hoping for $150. I'll start over in January and see how I do next year. I'm using my ones for Christmas shopping.
Did you have enough to get the Playstation 5?

GameStop is selling it for $499.00, but I am going to wait a little longer to get it when it's not a "hot item". Still going to save more singles for it.
^ Would it be any cheaper on Amazon or Walmart.com?

I didn’t really look around too much, but I know Amazon is selling it for more. I’m doing GameStop since I have membership discounts, trade credit, and gift cards that I’ve never used so I’m going to pool all of that together to pretty much cover it completely.
Sounds like you'll get the best deal at GameStop, maybe they'll have an after Christmas sale where the price will come down. Sometimes you can find almost new game systems at the Pawn Shops. I bought a play-station at the Pawn Shop a few years ago for my son. I don't remember which version but it played great.

Most of the pawn shops that I’ve seen in NYC are gold/jewelry only.
Yeah there's a couple of those type here but most of the area Pawn Shops have TV's, DVD Players, Game Systems and Games, movies, heaters, weed-eaters, you name it they probably have it. I guess NYC is different in the items they carry. Good luck on finding the one you want at a good price.
JamesG 01-31-2021, 08:09 PM I decided to do this again for 2021.
At the end of January I saved $47.00 in singles and was able to roll $8.50 in pennies, nickels and dimes - totaling $55.50.
I will post here again at the end of June to see how much I have at the half-way point.
JamesG 06-30-2021, 12:47 AM We are now at the end of June and my singles now total $228.00
I was also able to roll $34.50 in pennies, nickels and dimes - totaling $262.50 (I have $3.72 left over that wasn't enough to roll yet)
Let's see the final total around December.

Still hard to find (retail wise), right?

Yeah, I saw an article online that some places are getting restocked this week, but it’s still hard to come by.
Caroline13 06-30-2021, 10:54 PM I can't be bothered rolling pennies, gave my grandson a cloth bag loaded with pennies, what he's done with them I don't know. Hope he went to the market to one of those machines, he does not get a pleasure in rolling pennies. I have a box of dimes and will give to him too.

You don’t get your full amount back if you use your coins at those machines. Some of them offer gift cards, as well as cash, and I believe you do get the full amount of you choose a gift card.
I take my rolled coins to the bank or see if one of the local convenience stores near me want them. They are glad for the change, especially when there was a coin shortage not too long ago. Some places had signs requesting payment in exact change.
Caroline13 07-01-2021, 12:44 AM It just depends where one chooses to spend their time. I know you pay a little at the machines but in the whole scheme it's worth it, one's time is often more valuable.

I’m still getting mileage out of the PS4. But out of curiosity I had checked the main online retailers and didn’t see anything. But if someone is willing to go to what looks like $800 and up, then EBay has them covered.
JamesG 11-25-2021, 01:37 PM I went to the bank yesterday to exchange my singles and coins for bigger bills. I had $428.00 in singles and $73.00 in pennies, nickels and dimes.
Total was $501.00 and it was over $250.00 from my total last year.
JamesG 01-02-2022, 03:45 PM The final total for 2021 was $518.00
^ You did really well, anything special you want to buy?
I had $309. I may just leave it in there and add to it. I'd like to save up enough to buy a new sofa.

I was originally going to put it towards PS5, but I don’t think I’m going to do it now. I have heard from people I know who have it that it’s not really worth it if your PS4 is still going good.
I might get the VR headset Oculus Quest 2.

Are new PS4 games still being released? I'm always years behind, currently doing Last Of Us 2.

Here's a list of upcoming new releases for the PS4 this year.
I don't know if the releases are exclusive to the PS4, but they probably also come out on multiple consoles. They are at least PS4 compatible.

Thanks.
The only titles that interest me there are listed under tentative, which I figure means they potentially will never hit PS4.
