Which do you like better as Hawk's best buddy and fellow prankster? I vote for Wayne Rogers because overall I think the first three seasons of M*A*S*H* were sharper and more satiric. The first couple of Mike Farrell years were pretty good too, but overall I think the show began to lose its focus after its sixth year.
I think that Wayne Rogers gave more of an edge to Trapper than Mike Farrell gave to BJ.

I am partial to the first three seaons of M*A*S*H myself.
Trapper was a great character. It was a shame that he left the show.
I think most of the credit for the first three seasons has to go to Larry Gelbart. His writing style really made the show in those days.

Wayne Rogers was great.. He was relaxed and funny. Mike Farrell was ok but too much starch in his collar in my opinion.

Personally, I liked BJ better. I like Trapper too, but I've seen the later episodes more. BJ and Hawk just had better chemistry, IMO. It really depends on what you've seen more of and what you're used to seeing more.

I prefer BJ over Trapper because he was more mature, more principled ( was faithful to his wife ), and therefore more likely to let his true feelings show between the cracks. BJ developed deeper relationships with his fellow M*A*S*Hers than Trapper ever did and this made the episodes more poignent.:)

As Hotlips said when she was drunk "I always liked you Trapper Johnintire" Trap is the best..

B.J. was funnier than Trapper.....he always had some subtle line that killed me.

Besides...B.J. had panashe and lilt.

I liked Trapper better. Wayne Rogers & Alan Alda had great chemistry!

I gotta say BJ, he pulled jokes and noe one knew it was him. I loved the "arguments" he and hawkeye had I preffered him when Frank was still on the show opposed to <i>Charles</i>

I'd have to say BJ. I think that may possibly have something to do with the fact that he was on the show for more years.

While I like Trapper, I think that he was a little too much like Hawkeye. BJ provided a different, softer, and shall we say, a more "wholesome" viewpoint. He was a better counter to the Hawkeye personality.

I like BJ better. A Better complement to Hawkeye, bot so similar. BJ's character also offers more potential for serious stuff, which I like better personally. Mike Farrell is a great actor, too.

BJ stories got so steeped in sentimental gush that you wondered if this was a sitcom at times.

And as far as a complementing Hawkeye, Trapper was better, as BJ seemed to make Hawkeye a more sentimental sap and the humor and antics lighter and fluffier.

With Trapper, Hawkeye had to keep himself in check at times because the two of them were both over the top. They talked each other through the madness with quick and biting banter that seemed more fresh and funny than anything Hawkeye and BJ ever did.

I liked Trapper better. I don't know if it was just better writing at the beginning or the chemistry with Hawkeye was better.

trapper was the best alot more funnier and complimented hawk eyes character better.

I liked B.J. best. Like they said, he was more wholesome, didn't cheat on his wife, was a counter-balance to Hawkeye, and still made a lot of great wisecracks and practical jokes.
He also provided Col. Potter with a great pun when he came back after leaving B.J. in charge: "Hello, Hunnicutt, I'm home."

I liked BJ better, but Trapper has one of my favorite lines in the entire series. I think it was in the first episode. Frank is reading his bible and Trapper says to him, "I peeked at the end, Frank. The devil did it."

YES HE DID! There was one ep when Beej actually cheated on Peg! So part of your reason for liking BJ over Trapper is a mistake. Trap was a better character.

Episodes such as the one when Henry got a home movie sent to him by his wife, or when Trapper was willing to risk being shot for desertion just to try getting home to his family, prove how much they cared for their wives and children. They were in a godawful situation, thousands of miles from home, in a place they hadn't chosen to go to, seeing kids dying nearly every day. You can't judge them for finding some solace in the arms of other women. That's what happens in war time. Sad, perhaps, but true. Liking BJ best just for his apparent faithfulness is a little unfair on poor Trapper.

Anyways, Trapper was best! :)

Yeah, I know. I did finally see that episode where BJ got involved with that nurse. I've also seen other situations I hadn't remembered where I wasn't crazy about him. (He really was a cry baby at times). I just somehow got the idea that Trapper didn't have any reservations about it, but I didn't mean I completely disliked him. I just liked Beej better on the whole. He did get across some good jokes, and I liked the puns he and Hawk tossed back and forth. I didn't dislike Blake, Burns or Houlihan because of their indiscretions either. Heck, I even liked Hawkeye.

I go with BJ--I am 6 yrs younger then my older brother and he was and is a huge fan of Mash - I was soo annoyed over having to watch it caus' I rather have watched a cartoon or something-= but I am older now- and realize it is a great show! I watch it faithfully on Hallmark station here in NY- When the guy [who was later taken over by Kern Potter-forgot his name] left the show and Radar came in the OR telling them his plane crashed and he died-I got the same feeling the audience did first time it aired- I couldnt believe it- it was a great show--probably best ever-

I was a fan of the novel and film versions before the series began, so, although B.J. is a decent replacement, Trapper John was the original and best.
