Kurt Cobain's "MTV Unplugged" Guitar Sells for Record $6 Million at Auction

Grunge became gold Saturday as the guitar Kurt Cobain played on Nirvana's 1993 "MTV Unplugged" performance months before his death sold for an eye-popping $6 million at auction.

The 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain played in the band's rare acoustic performance and subsequent live album was sold to Australian Peter Freedman, owner of Røde Microphones, at the Music Icons event run by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, California.



Cobain used it at the November 18, 1993, show at New York City's Sony Music Studios that was less than five months before the singer and songwriter died at age 27.

The bids opened at $1 million for the sale that ended up breaking several world records.

Wow, so in keeping with the grunge/punk rock ethos of low-budget thrift, simplicity, and DIY. A $6 million guitar.

And I thought it was excessive to think that a Johnny Ramone Signature Mosrite guitar selling for $2000 in stores when the punk rock guitarist bought his for only $50 in the mid-70's.

Good grief $6 million for a guitar is unbelievable, no matter who played it in the past.
