Immediately to the left of Mrs Wiley (to her right), the one in front.

He's an extra, I've seen him on Gomer Pyle USMC, perhaps others. The face is hauntingly familiar, but I can't place it. I know the one in back is Leon Alton. But the only other "party guest" listed in the cast is Walter Bacon......and Bacon's birthdate in 1891 would make him 73 years old at the time of this episode. And to me the guy in the picture just doesn't appear 73.

Wondering if this might be a cameo of Aaron Ruben? (with a rug, of course)

Mr. Schwamp. He appeared as an extra in 26 episodes of TAGS. Real name is Patch S. Wimmers.

That's all incredible! Thank you. I had no idea that my curiosity was so widely shared. But you can bet I will be looking for him in the other episodes listed.

So, I guess the "Patch Wimmers" name was just an April fools tangent?

From what I understand, he was a personal friend of Andy Griffith and Andy, for whatever reason, would not tell anybody exactly who he was, including his real name. Not sure how much of that is true though?

Could very well be something clandestine going on. For as many episodes as he appeared in, it's really odd that his name is never mentioned in the credits.

Especially in view of how "one timers" such as Almira Sessions, Michael Ross, and Yuki Shimoda get credited billing.

Even Tom Jacobs get's billing, and he's a nobody.

I guess that I should look before I leap? Tom Jacobs is Danny Thomas's brother, the nominal namesake why the more famous brother chose the name "Thomas"

So, little mystery how he rated a billing.

You really wouldn't have to twist my arm off, to get me to consider there might be a family relation here. Perhaps cousin?

I'll give the creator behind that link credit for his detective capabilities.

The episode titled "The Cannon" was on today, and I thought "oh great, here is a chance to find Schwamp".

Man, he was there for all of a second and a half, and just one face in a crowded scene.

Extras are not given credits. If you actually speak, you get a credit.

Well, by getting the season 5 DVD, I think that I've finally managed to sift Schwamp out the the "Luck of Newton Monroe" episode.

First here (frame is so dark because it is part of a "between scenes fade" in the actual program)

Then 1.5 seconds later here

Then, oddly enough walking the other way, just a few seconds later

And then it seemed to hit me right between the eyes, hidden in plain sight.....do any of you think that is Schwamp on the center of the following two frames?

It's funny, because if ever I did run into Ron Howard, the first thing I'd say to him would be "who played Schwamp?"

Out of the commonly listed 26 episodes that Schwamp is claimed to appear in, I've found him in all but 7 of them.

I still have Don't Miss a Good Bet, Barney Comes to Mayberry, Aunt Bee and the Lecturer, The Church Benefactors, Barney Hosts a Summit Meeting, Mayberry RFD, and Sam Runs for Town Council ....to go. Not that I am obsessed or anything.

So that was an April Fools joke.

I adore conversations like this, where viewers talk not about the main stars but about the background characters. And there's no character in TAGS more background than Old Man Schwamp.

TAGS was cool because Mayberry had so many side characters. Those side characters definitely helped flesh out the town, making it feel more like a real community.

If only Mr. Schwamp had had a line... then he would have been credited, and we'd know who he was.

I really labored hard to find Schwamp in the Luck of Newton Monroe on the network broadcasts, because his appearances are so brief.

But, being able to frame by frame my way through a DVD makes it much easier.

You can also catch some fairly interesting wardrobe malfunctions that no one back in the day ever dreamed would be at the disposal of the viewers.

Well, I believe that out of all the episodes that Schwamp makes an appearance in, "The Education of Ernest T Bass" is the most iconic. Seated on the bench in front of the courthouse as the stars make their approach. Schwamp actually utters an audible (although unintelligible) comment....seems like he SHOULD have earned a credit for this appearance. But no....

I've caught Schwamp in all the claimed appearances, except "Don't Miss A Good Bet", so I suspect TVLand must have left that one on the cutting floor in favor of commercial time.

Same was almost true for Season 7's "Barney Comes to Mayberry", watching the original on DVD you see Schwamp appear for a good 12 seconds as a face in the crowd at the train station, but TVLand cuts that down to a glancing 1 second in the version they are airing.

So, I guess I'll have to borrow the dvd from my Library to conclude my quest.

Schwamp always looks like he's wearing a rug to me, and the guy on the bench appears to have his hair greased. so I don't think this is him.

But I've captured a screen shot of every other uncredited appearance in "Don't Miss a Good Bet", and no one else even comes close.

So it's either this guy, or the fan site is wrong about Schwamp being in this episode.
