Smart most definately!

In spite of his ineptitude and stupidity, Maxwell Smart would probably triumph in
a battle of wits ... because even in the face of danger and seemingly insurmountable odds, Max would be fearless -- AND ... LOVING IT!

"THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E." was the more serious of the two, with some "tongue-in-cheek" moments (which became rampant in the later seasons- would YOU believe Nancy Sinatra as a scientist's daughter, in nothing but a bikini??), but there was always the undercurrent of fate and tragedy in the wings.

"GET SMART" was pure farce- the moment in the pilot episode where Maxwell Smart "checks" into CONTROL and punches in at that time clock before he meets with the "Chief", is a tip-off that his adventures aren't to be taken TOO seriously. You get the feeling no matter how much Max bungles his way through a mission, it's BOUND to be successful. The danger is there, but the laughter getting through it overwhelms everything else. People get killed, but Max always softens the horror of the moment {"If only he'd used his treachery for NICENESS...instead of evil!"}.
