I looked through 10 pages of threads but did not see this discussion ...

Ted Danson had some grey and thinning hair while on the show, even in the beginning. I Googled it and apparently he dyed his hair AND wore a toupee! It was a good one but I could tell right off the bat in the first episode that something wasn't right ... when the show was new in 82 my family didn't have a color TV so I guess it wasn't apparent.

He must have been young in 1982; was he prematurely grey, or ....

LOL - the Irony that he was obsessed with his hair yet in real life it was leaving him !

I agree. It was very surprising to find out he wore a wig. I know in the Muppet movie he made in the late 90s, he had a noticeable bald spot.

I wasn't actually aware of him going gray while on the show, but I did know he wore a toupee and was balding.

Though I watched Cheers years after it was released (2018-2019) and knew that Danson was bald during the course of the series, I would suspect that the rug was obvious from Day 1 to anyone watching the show back in the '80's - even to someone who didn't know about it beforehand.

That being said, I never really saw the show when it was originally on, though if I had it would have been on a small CRT piece-of-crap TV, and the detail(s) re: Sam's hair wouldn't necessarily have been that noticeable. When I finally saw the show, it was on the remastered DVD's with relatively clear picture quality (PQ), on a large HD set; so, I'm sure the far superior presentation made a big difference.

It's interesting & realistic that in one of the later seasons, Sam reveals that he's wearing a hairpiece on the show - which I felt was unexpected & refreshing.

I noticed that Sam's hair was decidedly lighter in shade in the Season 11 premiere, which picks up right where the Season 10 finale left off, following Woody and Kelly's wedding.

I'm not a fan of ANY MAN with his hair dyed with fake red highlights - be it Sam or almost every aging over 50's guy hiding his gray hair - pathetic - when the color is an obvious mismatch fake what's the point ?

Wasn’t there an episode of “Cheers,” where Ted Danson actually removes his partial toupee and shows it and his bald spot to Kirstie Alley? It took a great sense of self-confidence and a great sense of humor for Ted Danson to do that in front of a tv studio audience, not to mention all of America.

Can you imagine William Shatner, Chuck Norris or Steve Martin doing that? Although comedian/actor Charles Nelson Reilly once very bravely removed his flowing Robert Redford-like toupee from his own head and placed it on the balding head of a male contestant during a taping of the classic game show, “The Match Game,” much to host Gene Rayburn’s and the other celebrity panelists’ and tv studio audience’s great delight and amusement.

There is an episode where all the members of the male cast of Cheers wear bald head-dress, I think Danson was wearing a one as well vs actually being fully bald ...

Maybe your referring to something else ?

Yeah, it must have been during the final season of “Cheers.” I think Kirstie Allen’s character, Rebecca, was feeling down in the dumps for some reason, and Sam tries to make her feel better by showing her that not everything was “perfect” in his life either, so he pulled off his partial toupee to cheer her up.

Bob Newhart said he wore a partial toupee too, even as far back as when he portrayed Dr. Bob Hartley on “The Bob Newhart Show.” He didn’t want to look completely bald, so he wore the partial rug to look as if his hair was just starting to recede.

When Mr. Newhart was awarded a Kennedy Center Award, David Hyde Pierce came out on stage and thanked Bob Newhart for helping balding guys like himself everywhere gain some solace and acceptance of their thinning locks. Bob Newhart laughed uproariously and saluted
David Hyde Pierce.

Thanks for posting that video. I thought it was Rebecca who Sam was comforting, but it was actually Carla he was being kind to. After thirty some odd years, I’m becoming as forgetful as the late, lamented Coach.:)

I never understood why all the gals on Cheers thought Sam was "gorgeous." I never even thought he was handsome. In my opinion, he was barely average looking.

I guess next to Norm, Cliff, Woody and Frazier, Sam “May-Day” Malone looked like a younger William Holden or a “slightly” more handsome version of the incredibly talented Pauly Shore.

Well, Woody has certainly aged gracefully over the years. ;)
