In episode 35 “Fit, Fat and Forty-One” (Season 2, 1973-74) Bob celebrates his 41st birthday.
In episode 59 “An American Family” (Season 3, 1974-75), the family gathers for Thanksgiving Dinner and Bob’s parents mention several times that they have been married 40 years (already, this puts Bob having been born two years before they were married since by now he’s 42!)
At the very end of this episode, though, Bob asks Carol to send some flowers to his mom because she got her feelings hurt when Emily’s dad said she looked good for a woman of 60. “But she does, says Carol. “Yes, but she’s only 56,” says Bob.
Geez, REALLY? I get that incontinuities happen between episodes or seasons, but in the SAME episode they say a couple’s been married 40 years and the woman is 56? Yes, it’s possible she was married at 16, but that would still put her giving birth to Bob at age 14.
(And BTW, Martha Scott who played Bob’s mom was 62 in 1974 which is the RIGHT age for Bob’s mother - so why’d they even bother to pretend she was 56?”)
