"The Flash's" Hartley Sawyer Fired for Racist, Homophobic and Misogynistic Tweets That Left Showrunner "Mad as Hell"
by Matt Webb Mitovich
June 8, 2020

Hartley Sawyer will not be returning to "The Flash" as Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man, due to numerous racist, homophobic and misogynistic tweets he made prior to joining The CW series.

“In regards to Mr. Sawyer’s posts on social media, we do not tolerate derogatory remarks that target any race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation,” reads a statement from The CW, producers Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions, and showrunner Eric Wallace, cited by THR.

“Such remarks are antithetical to our values and policies, which strive and evolve to promote a safe, inclusive and productive environment for our workforce.”

The Flash star Grant Gustin is "shocked, saddened and angry" over Hartley Sawyer's old racist and misogynistic tweets as showrunner vows change (https://deadline.com/2020/06/the-flash-showrunner-star-grant-gustin-react-hartley-sawyer-firing-1202954009/)

"Words matter," Gustin wrote (https://www.instagram.com/p/CBL1mQzFVfj/) in reposting The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace's statement (https://twitter.com/ewrote/status/1270054340607143937) on Sawyer's firing (https://www.primetimer.com/item/The-Flash-star-Hartley-Sawyer-fired-over-a-series-of-racist-and-misogynistic-tweets-from-before-he-joined-the-show-GdSo9B) over his resurfaced tweets. In his statement, Wallace said "I am committed to bringing permanent change to our work environment here on The Flash. Yes, this is a family show. But it's for all families. That includes Black and Brown ones. In order to facilitate this, I will continue to find Black and Brown writers, directors, actors and producers of all genders to help tell The Flash stories. Their stories are part of the American narrative, too, and must be heard."

I'm not big on people getting fired for old, out-of-context tweets, but this guy hit all the boxes: misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc.

Seemingly knowingly.

The tweets are from 2010-2012, guessing the guy was in his late teens -to early 20's when he posted them.

And yet these networks and companies openly condone when their actors, actresses, producers, etc. endorse pedophilia and child molestation. Go figure.

No they don't.

At least on the "openly" part.

Probably even before he booked “Y&R”.

When have they done this?

Disney has done it a lot, but can't remember specifics. There's a documentary on Amazon Prime about pedophilia and how it's merely just a sexual preference to prefer little kids, but I don't remember the name. But I know that they have, just can't recall the specifics. The fact IS that many actors, actresses, studio execs, etc. are pedophiles.

James Gunn is a good example of a pedophile, working for Disney, and yet they don't care and are basically encouraging his behavior. His Twitter posts are proof of him being a pedophile. And yet Disney's totally fine with it.

You don’t know the specifics, or the name, but state that many Hollywood people are pedos? Weak position.

Making bad taste jokes doesn’t make one a pedo.

Yes, many Hollywood people are pedos. Can you prove they aren't?

And what about say, people like Dan Schneider from Nickelodeon with all his allegations. Nickelodeon knew about his behavior but only fired him when the news became public but they were well aware of everything.

MANY Hollywood people are? That's like making up any crazy statement and passing it off as true. Throwing a "prove it's not true!" doesn't make it legitimate.

And if you say that actors saying pervy stuff about children on social media are "just bad jokes", then I guess you could say that this guy "just made bad jokes" as well. What I'm trying to say is, I guess, that I sure wish Hollywood cared this much about their actors being child predators that they do about this stuff. Because both are very serious things.

I know former Disney Channel actors have come forward and told their stories about being sexually abused by the Adult Disney executives...soo...yeah...

Not true. I make inappropriate jokes all the time. It doesn’t make me a racist, or pedo, pro-violence, etc.

You claimed it was fact, so you should prove to me that it’s true. Regarding Dan Schneider, he and Nickelodeon agreed to “part ways” so he wasn’t officially fired. He does have allegations, but it’s all unproven.

How The Flash will handle Elongated Man following the firing of Hartley Sawyer (https://ew.com/tv/the-flash-season-7-elongated-man-sue-dearbon/)

Showrunner Eric Wallace says The CW superhero show felt it was important to "honor the character" of Ralph Dibny's super-flexible hero even though Sawyer had been fired for old racist and misogynistic tweets. "In order to wrap that up, which we're going to do at the top of season 7, Ralph has to be part of that," Wallace tells EW. "Now thank goodness, Ralph is a guy who can change faces and his appearance in many ways. Without giving any spoilers away, there are a couple of ways that we can have Elongated Man still appear in at least one episode this season to wrap that storyline up, that gets us what we need and still allows fans to say goodbye to the character, at least for the indefinite future."

its really unfortunate - not forgiving or condoning anything (honestly haven't seen any of the offensive tweets, so i don't know the story at all) - i was looking forward to seeing where they were going to go with the Ralph and Sue Dibney storyline.
