View Full Version : Should The Goldbergs have moved into the '90s already?

I thought about this in light of the recent cancellation of Schooled. I mean, it isn't like something like That '70s Show or the first attempt at a spin-off (which ultimately became Schooled) called "1990-something", where the title pretty much limits where you can go.

What I mean, is The Goldbergs is a weird show in that it's set in the 1980s but it deliberately uses a loose, non-linear timeline. In other words, matter how old the kids get, it's whatever year it needs to be in the '80s for the episode to work. Basically, even though the kids age, the year changes around them.

I get that the '80s setting is part of the charm and identity of the show, but said before that the existence of Schooled while The Goldbergs is still on the air was problematic, because it feels like a spoiler of what is supposed to happen to Barry and Erica and their relationships with Lainey a decade later.

The cancellation of "Schooled," wrong-headed as it is, seems like it might be ample opportunity to at least move the show towards the 1990s.
