Five Freshman Series Return for a Second Season

CBS today unveiled its new 2020-2021 primetime programming lineup featuring one new comedy, two new dramas and 23 returning series. Additional new series will be announced at a later date. For 2019-2020, the Network finished #1 for the 12th straight season, winning 17 of the past 18 seasons.

The two new shows for fall include the comedy B POSITIVE, from award-winning executive producer, writer and creator Chuck Lorre and Marco Pennette, starring Emmy Award nominee Thomas Middleditch and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford, and the drama THE EQUALIZER, starring Academy Award nominee and multi-hyphenate Queen Latifah.

The shows debuting later in the season include the new drama CLARICE from acclaimed executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, starring Rebecca Breeds in the title role, and returning favorites S.W.A.T. and UNDERCOVER BOSS.

In addition, CBS will broadcast SUPER BOWL LV on Feb. 7, 2021.

“We’re excited to come off another season as America’s Most Watched Network and, despite the obvious challenges around us, put together another winning lineup,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “Next season, we’ll have five breakout returning freshman series and three compelling new shows placed into a schedule with the incredible stability for which CBS is so well known. Couple that with our broadcast of SUPER BOWL LV next February, and CBS is simply loaded with a lineup that will clearly appeal to both our advertising partners and our loyal viewers.”

CBS’ new fall schedule features perennial strength and stability, plus big new show additions on Thursday and Sunday.

MONDAYS – Monday’s lineup returns intact. The one-hour comedy block of THE NEIGHBORHOOD followed by #1 new comedy BOB ♥ ABISHOLA opens the night from 8:00-9:00 PM, where both shows rank among the top comedies on television, with larger audiences than every comedy on all other networks. At 9:00 PM, one of the top-rated freshman dramas on television ALL RISE returns starring Simone Missick, followed by BULL, Monday’s #1 entertainment program, at 10:00 PM, averaging over 10.5 million viewers.

TUESDAYS – Tuesday’s dominant lineup remains intact, with the three returning dramas delivering +13 million viewers for the night. NCIS, the #1 series on television that averages over 15.33 million viewers, opens the night at 8:00 PM when it returns for its 18th season. At 9:00 PM, FBI, which averages 12.55 million viewers, returns for its third season, followed by #1 new series FBI: MOST WANTED with 10.2 million viewers at 10:00 PM.

WEDNESDAYS – Wednesday’s solid schedule adds more reality and adventure. SURVIVOR hosted by Jeff Probst, again starts off the night at 8:00 PM, where it was watched this season by nearly 10 million viewers and is CBS’ #1 broadcast in key demos. At 9:00 PM, a fall edition of the multiple Emmy Award-winning THE AMAZING RACE hosted by Phil Keoghan begins another trek around the world. Then at 10:00 PM, the fourth season of military drama SEAL TEAM, starring David Boreanaz, returns to close out the night.

THURSDAYS – Thursday’s schedule adds one new notable comedy. YOUNG SHELDON, television’s #1 comedy, again anchors the night and is the lead-in for the new comedy B POSITIVE at 8:30 PM. Next, at 9:00 PM is television’s #2 comedy MOM, starring Anna Faris and Emmy and Academy Award winner Allison Janney, followed by the #2 new comedy, THE UNICORN, starring Walton Goggins at 9:30 PM. At 10:00 PM, award-winning producers Michelle and Robert King continue to examine the origins of evil in the critically acclaimed drama EVIL.

FRIDAYS – CBS’ most dominant night, where the Network is beating all others this season by +3.5 million viewers, returns intact. MACGYVER opens the night at 8:00 PM, leading into MAGNUM P.I. at 9:00 PM. Television’s #3 drama BLUE BLOODS returns at 10:00 PM, to cap one of television’s strongest nights.

SATURDAYS – CBS’ Saturday night lineup features CRIMETIME SATURDAY, encore broadcasts of the Network’s popular dramas at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, followed by the law and justice program 48 HOURS, Saturday’s #1 non-sports primetime series, at 10:00 PM.

SUNDAYS – CBS’ winning night adds a new high-profile drama. 60 MINUTES, television’s acclaimed #1 news program, returns for its 53rd season at 7:00 PM, providing a dominant lead-in for the new drama THE EQUALIZER, a reimagining of the classic series, at 8:00 PM. Next, the two most-watched entertainment programs on Sunday air back to back: NCIS: LOS ANGELES at 9:00 PM, followed by NCIS: NEW ORLEANS at 10:00 PM.

THE NEW FALL COMEDY:

B POSITIVE (Thursday, 8:30-9:00 PM)

B POSITIVE is from award-winning executive producer, writer and creator Chuck Lorre and Marco Pennette, and stars Emmy Award nominee Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”) and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford (“Masters of Sex”). The comedy revolves around Drew (Middleditch), a therapist and newly divorced dad who is faced with finding a kidney donor when he runs into Gina (Ashford), a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past who volunteers her own. Together, they form an unlikely and life-affirming friendship as they begin a journey that will forever impact both of their lives. Chuck Lorre and Marco Pennette are executive producers for Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions, Inc. James Burrows directed the pilot from a script by Pennette.

B POSITIVE stars Thomas Middleditch as Drew, Annaleigh Ashford as Gina, Kether Donohue as Leanne, Sara Rue as Julia and Kamryn Kunody as Maddie.

THE NEW FALL DRAMA:

THE EQUALIZER (Sunday, 8:00-9:00 PM)

THE EQUALIZER is a reimagining of the classic series starring Academy Award nominee and multi-hyphenate Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” “Bessie”) as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn. McCall presents to most as an average single mom who is quietly raising her teenage daughter. But to a trusted few, she is The Equalizer – an anonymous guardian angel and defender of the downtrodden, who’s also dogged in her pursuit of personal redemption. Andrew Marlowe, Terri Miller, Dana Owens (Queen Latifah), John Davis, John Fox, Debra Martin Chase, Richard Lindheim (co-creator of the original “Equalizer” TV series that ran on CBS for four seasons), Shakim Compere and Liz Friedlander (pilot only) are executive producers for Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, in association with CBS Television Studios. Friedlander will direct the pilot episode from a script by Marlowe and Miller.

THE EQUALIZER stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, Chris Noth as William Bishop, Lorraine Toussaint as Viola “Aunt Vi” Lascombe, Tory Kittles as Marcus Dante, Liza Lapira as Melody Zhao and Laya DeLeon Hayes as Delilah.

NEW DRAMA FOR MID-SEASON:

CLARICE, from acclaimed executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, and starring Rebecca Breeds (“Pretty Little Liars”) in the title role, is a deep dive into the untold personal story of FBI Agent Clarice Starling as she returns to the field in 1993, six months after the events of “The Silence of the Lambs.” Brilliant and vulnerable, Clarice’s bravery gives her an inner light that draws monsters and madmen to her. However, her complex psychological makeup that comes from a challenging childhood empowers her to begin to find her voice while working in a man’s world, as well as escape the family secrets that have haunted her throughout her life. Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet, Elizabeth J.B. Klaviter and Heather Kadin are executive producers for MGM Television and CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout. Aaron Baiers is a co-executive producer. Maja Vrvilo will direct the pilot episode from a script by Lumet and Kurtzman.

CLARICE stars Rebecca Breeds as Clarice Starling, Kal Penn as Emin Grigoriyan, Nick Sandow as Murray Clarke, Lucca de Oliveira as Tomas Esquivel, Michael Cudlitz as Paul Krendler and Devyn A. Tyler as Ardelia Mapp.

What a lackluster lineup of new shows. Young Sheldon is good, but that doesn't mean Chuck Lorre should be making most of their comedies. B Positive sure doesn't sound worth losing Man With a Plan, Broke, and Carol's Second Act for. And The Unicorn was a lousy pickup in the first place, it did not deserve a 2nd season. Pathetic that CBS keeps pushing that crap.

I think it's time CBS considered cutting-back Survivor to one cycle per year, and have it and The Amazing Race share the Wednesday-at-8 timeslot going forward (with Survivor for fall and Amazing Race for midseason, or vice-versa). Or, hey, they could even move to Sundays at 8 after 60 Minutes (provided that The Equalizer 2020/21 tanks after one year).

I think it's time CBS considered cutting-back Survivor to one cycle per year. That is not going to happen any time soon, this year was just because of covid-19 shutdowns. Survivor still gets strong ratings and is one of the highest rated shows on CBS. In normal years TAR can air between Survivor cycles as it has short seasons.

Well, why did ABC cut Dancing with the Stars to one cycle per year? And what were its ratings like when they did that? Plus, what happens when Survivor starts running out of locations?

A Disqus commenter who I am not sure is reliable said because of an NFL game being postponed to tonight at 7PM, the One Day at a Time CBS premiere is postponed a week, and Big Brother will air right after the game at 10PM. That's too bad. I was hoping that the number of unproduced episodes from the shows' previous season orders would get combined with their current season's orders (whether their current seasons will be full or abbreviated), and air them with few or no repeats, but nope. Nightmare-Virus-related safety protocols have increased per-episode costs too much, so networks are now going with the "Last Resort" option (16-episode seasons). This is exactly why I fear a pandemic of a different disease with circumstances similar to COVID-19 in the future, and the associated protocols and guidelines.:crying:

On the other hand, if all those CBS procedural shows were to start doing 16 to 18 episodes permanently, at least their writers aren't as likely to struggle to come-up with ideas for fresh episodes and story arcs.

And the lead-out program for Super Bowl 53 will be... not The Neighborhood for a potential bolstering of CBS's comedy division... but that The Equalizer reboot starring Queen Latifah.

Very disappointing choice for that slot because I had been expecting CBS to finally land a sitcom on that post-Super Bowl slot after all they've had there are procedural dramas and reality shows. The probably chose that Equalizer reboot instead because the ratings for this season's Super Bowl aren't going to be as high because of the ongoing COVID nightmare-virus pandemic. I guess the broadcast networks have clearly not learned from the 24: Legacy and The World's Best fiascos. This means CBS is essentially screwing-over yet another owned sitcom:angryfire, and because of this, I just don't like CBS anymore.:(

No surprise, CBS doesn't put sitcoms after the Super Bowl. That's more NBC's style. CBS is always gonna give favored treatment to procedurals and reality.

One perfect reason not to support CBS anymore. I am NOT giving up hope on CBS airing a comedy (preferably an owned one) after the Super Bowl at some point in the future. It'll be a breath of fresh air, because procedurals and reality shows are just boring. Besides, NBC hasn't aired a sitcom after the Super Bowl since 2009 (the U.S. version of The Office).

Why should I not be upset about the bad choices made by CBS regarding that timeslot?:angryfire What you're stating implies that CBS is going to keep on burying their post-The Big Bang Theory comedy division, and at this point, it's just inexcusable.

It'll depend on whether CBS stays on the Super Bowl rotation after 2022. I understand that sitcoms' audiences have been declining since The Big Bang Theory ended, but that is NOT an excuse not to slot a comedy after the Super Bowl. Current broadcast sitcoms being creatively bad might be one, but still. After this year, their comedy division will just get so weak that CBS won't have a choice. It may be too late for The Neighborhood that next time around, however.

The bottom line is, I want a CBS sitcom to air after the Super Bowl. Bad. Very bad.

Comedy is not a priority for CBS, drama and reality will always be favored. Their base audience likes dramas and cbs plays it safe in that regard.

The only thing that MIGHT change is the new leadership of ViacomCBS. They MAY have different ideas.

Comedies can be popular with the CBS audience if they choose the right ones. The Big Bang Theory was very dominant for awhile, more so than the dramas. At its peak, even the TBBT reruns on CBS did well.

:angryfire I don't care what CBS's base audience likes, CBS is going to have to put a sitcom after the Super Bowl eventually, because in the coming years, the viewership for their comedy division could dwindle until it's more like NBC's comedies right now. If this doesn't happen, then I will never watch another Super Bowl lead out program again. Somebody needs to ask TJ and see what he thinks about this?

I really wish you wouldn't deadlock me in a back-and-forth argument, and I will not be forced to repeat the same thing over and over.:angryfire

One thing that is potentially different about this year: with all the regular season games that have been postponed because of positive covid tests from players, the Super Bowl is not a guarantee to air on the Sunday it is scheduled. If a postponement to Tuesday happens like some Sunday games have, whatever leadout was scheduled wouldn't matter as the affiliates won't want to give up more of their weekday schedules.

So, if the Super Bowl ends-up getting postponed to Monday, could The Neighborhood theoretically air after the SB instead, pre-empting the rest of CBS's Monday lineup? I don't see Bob Hearts Abishola being the next top sitcom for the network, or even getting an anchor slot, considering how tight their comedy lineup is. Under that scenario, where does this leave the premiere episode of the 2021 reboot of The Equalizer?

I’m surprised no mentioning of the renewal of Young Sheldon YET. Considering cable network nickelodeon/nick@niTe had plans for its future.

I know Covid has been a problem on this show this year. I don’t know how much longer Jim Parsons wants to continue.

The kids on this show are really growing to be wonderful talented actors/actresses Iain (Young Sheldon) & Reagan (Missy) & Montana (Georgie Jr.) Unfortunately they maybe outgrowing there roles as they are growing up fast. Considering The Big Bang Theory came before Young Sheldon.

I don’t know how much longer Jim Parsons wants to continue.Young Sheldon is still one of CBS's strongest shows. It will be renewed, just a matter of when the announcement will be released. Being unowned, it might take longer to work out a deal than The Neighborhood, which is owned. Jim Parsons is just the narrator here, he doesn't have a big role that would take a lot of time like TBBT did. The Young Sheldon kids are not outgrowing their roles, they are still doing great.

For some time before the COVID pandemic, I had anticipated Mom and NCIS: New Orleans ending after 2020-21. Has either show been creatively exhausted already? CBS should've added two more episodes to their current seasons to wrap them up properly, for a total of 18. Otherwise, their fans are fearing forever-unresolved storylines.

Mom's end would also mean that The Neighborhood has cemented this status as the top multi-camera sitcom on CBS (I think it's the first time ever for an owned comedy if Young Sheldon didn't exist).

Young Sheldon got a massive three season renewal, which will take it to at least 7 seasons.

I’m really glad Young Sheldon got renewed! It puzzles me though how this show does so well on CBS, yet on nick@niTe can’t even get a 9pm-4AM time slot?

Say, any idea of what you think CBS's Fall 2021 schedule will or should look like now that FBI: International, NCIS: Hawaii, and the CSI: Vegas sequel have ALL received series orders? Like, where will those three be slotted (whether they launch in the fall or midseason), etc.?

FBI: International won't be until midseason, that was announced when it was ordered to series. FBI should move to Mondays at 9:00 with NCIS: Hawaii airing Tuesdays after parent NCIS. FBI would be a much stronger Monday anchor than All Rise has. CSI will probably air Wednesdays at 9:00, it would be after Survivor again and that night has been really weak.

what I would schedule for them next season

Sunday
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 The Equalizer
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:00 Seal Team

Monday
8:00 The Neighborhood
8:30 New Comedy
9:00 FBI
10:00 All Rise 13 episodes- FBI: International in January

Tuesday
8:00 NCIS- final season if Mark Harmon really does want to leave
9:00 NCIS: Hawaii
10:00 FBI: Most Wanted

Wednesday
8:00 Survivor/Tough As Nails/Survivor
9:00 CSI: Vegas
10:00 S.W.A.T.

Thursday
8:00 Young Sheldon
8:30 New Comedy
9:00 Bob Hearts Abishola
9:30 United States of Al
10:00 New Drama

Friday
8:00 Magnum, P.I. final season
9:00 Bull
10:00 Blue Bloods

Midseason
B Positive- As a fan of B Positive I am hoping CBS treats Thomas Middleditch like they have Michael Weatherly and leaves the show intact. I wanted to put this on the fall schedule but would settle for 13 episodes midseason. But if they would recast Thomas like some have called for, just cancel and put Annaleigh Ashford in something else.

Cancelled/Ending
The Unicorn, Clarice, Evil, MacGyver, NCIS: New Orleans, Mom

CBS Declares Early Ratings Victory for 2020-21 Season

Is there an exit plan for the NCIS franchise in the works as it makes room for the FBI franchise (and despite a new NCIS spinoff launching next year)?

First, NCIS: New Orleans gets buried in the Sunday-at-10 deathslot to make room for FBI: Most Wanted, and gets cancelled after the following year and is replaced (though not on the same timeslot, obviously) by NCIS: Hawaii.

Next, NCIS: Los Angeles gets shifted to the same deathslot for 2021-22 and gets a short order of 13-16 episodes before deciding to retire due to low ratings (partially because of Linda Hunt no longer appearing regularly and other stars' contracts expiring).

Last, the original NCIS series has to deal with Mark Harmon's reduced onscreen presence in season 19, and its numbers decline as a result (and its ratings get beaten by FBI a couple of times). Despite that, the series is renewed for season 20 (tying it with Gunsmoke as CBS's longest-running primetime drama), and then it's announced as the Farewell Season, with audience numbers slipping for U.S. Broadcast TV's number-one drama series.

Before the pandemic, I thought NCIS: Los Angeles would end at season 12, and NCIS: New Orleans would continue for at least season 8.

Okay, here are my CBS scheduling suggestions for 2021-22:

* There have been talks over the past few days of SEAL Team, Clarice, and Evil going to Paramount+ for their next seasons, opening-up a slot for new shows on the CBS schedule. I thought that Evil was going to end up on CBS's Summer schedule for season 2, but a premiere date for it still hasn't been announced, which is frustrating.
* Aside from NCIS: Los Angeles, I could see Blue Bloods being in its final season next year, also. It will depend on if Tom Selleck will want to continue doing BB past season 12, but still, I don't know if it should at this point. I had said in the past that BB would be the next show to end its original run while still in the Nielsen Top 20.
* The shows I'd want to move to Sundays at 10 next are Bull, the 2017 version of S.W.A.T., and the 2018 version of Magnum P.I. (provided that the 2021 version of The Equalizer and NCIS: Los Angeles don't each get moved an hour later).
* I agree on moving Bob Hearts Abishola to Thursdays at 9 because of Mom ending, and it's mainly because of the limited choices for that anchor slot (I don't see B Positive or United States of Al getting an anchor slot so early in their runs).
* At the end of next season, if CSI: Vegas gets renewed for a season two, one of FBI: International or NCIS: Hawaii will get cancelled after one year while the other also gets renewed.

Here's the new schedule. It stinks just like the other networks.

Thank God for Retro TV channels and free streams! No way I'm watching this crap! (Except "Young Sheldon". He's still cool!)

CBS boss defends TV networks' dependence on franchises and reboots (https://www.wsj.com/articles/from-fbi-to-the-wonder-years-tv-networks-bet-on-more-franchises-reboots-11621881246)

"'Franchise’ is a bad word only if you do the exact same thing,” says CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl, who tells The Wall Street Journal each show has its own identity despite sharing source material. Last week, Kahl revealed a fall schedule that includes a new NCIS, a CSI revival and three straight hours of FBI, including the brand-new FBI: International. Meanwhile, the constant reboots and franchises has frustrated writers. Mike Royce, who co-created the One Day at a Time reboot, says "if we had pitched that same exact show without the IP (intellectual property) of the old show, we never would have gotten anywhere." He adds: "It becomes very hard and frustrating when the thing you’ve been doing most of your life is coming up with an original idea and turning it into a TV show."
