J.C. Penny will probably be gone like Sears, K Mart, and Montgomery Ward....
IllinoisTVFan 05-16-2020, 12:04 AM I'm surprised they are even still around, I haven't gone there is years (almost 20 years). Very sad actually because our choices are getting limited.

Sears and K Mart still have stores. Montgomery Ward still exists online.

True, but according to Wikipedia's Kmart article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kmart), there were once 2,486 Kmarts, and there are now only 43 left. Most states have no Kmart. We lost ours a few years ago, along with the local Sears. Neither one is even in this state anymore. That company became so mismanaged.
I hate to see J.C. Penney go under. They were a good brand.

What are you talking about??
JC Penny isn't gone. Plenty of companies file for bankruptcy. It's just a restructuring and/or elimination of debt.
Of course it's not a good thing but most companies return after bankruptcy just like Neiman Marcus is.
Plus JC Penny still has 846 stores so it's not going anywhere soon.
80sTrivia 05-16-2020, 06:06 AM From what I understand, the company will have to close a number of stores in accordance with their debt consolidation agreement with their creditors, but not all of the stores are closing. The number of stores to close will depend on when the majority can re-open and get back into business from this pandemic nightmare...
I won’t be surprised if the store in my local mall ends up closing.

One day, if we live long enough (we won’t), we’ll see stories about the death of Wal Mart, Target, etc. Every business has a finite timeline, be it a month or a hundred years.

I think that'll come sooner than later.
The revenge of Mom and Pop.

I know ! I will be so sad to see JC Penney gone!:( I love that store ! The one closest to me always seemed to be doing a pretty good business !! I still miss Sears and Kmart ! I will be really depressed if JC Penny is no longer around !! :(

You can relax for the next few years. JCPenny has a major balloon payment due in 2023. They'll likely be OK till then. And maybe even after if they can get that worked out!

How was the foot traffic there before this stupid Coronavirus?
RetroGuy2000 05-17-2020, 04:45 AM I know ! I will be so sad to see JC Penney gone!:( I love that store ! The one closest to me always seemed to be doing a pretty good business !! I still miss Sears and Kmart ! I will be really depressed if JC Penny is no longer around !! :(
Our city once had seven department stores.
The JC Penney store here closed about five years ago. It couldn't compete against Marshall's, Kmart, Target, Walmart, Dillard's, and Sears. Mostly Walmart, of course. Ross moved into its space, and because they are next to Marshall's, I think they do a decent discount business. Bargain-hunters shop in the one store, then go into the other one.
The Kmart store here was always empty and hadn't been updated since the 1980s. Going in was like walking into 1985: fun for the retro feel (I'm a retro kind of guy, as you know), but not somewhere people would normally shop. When they announced it was closing, no-one was surprised. At the very end, they had tried to sell groceries, following Walmart, but that effort was far, far too late. They couldn't break into a market they should have entered a decade earlier. Shopping patterns had already been established years earlier. It was so mismanaged. You could feel them circling the drain for over a decade, maybe more.
When our local Sears closed, I think everyone was devastated. It had been a major mall anchor, it had the Craftsman tools and all the lawn accessories. Many people still shopped there, so the store closing was a very big community event. Our mall, already failing, became a mostly empty shell.
Dillard's, now the only other mall anchor, does more business on its January 1st sales day than all the rest of the year combined. That New Year's Day event is crazy! I guess that's how they stay in business? That and the costly merch. I only buy stuff when it's on sale. I imagine Coronavirus may have killed the store. They couldn't be open during the greater part of the crisis.
Target here does fairly strong business -- I know it benefited from Penny's, Sears, and Kmart closing -- but I estimate it doesn't even do 10% of the sales of the Walmart.
We have no other department stores, so now we are down to five, and I'm sure we will soon lose more.
When I visited Sears in the Big City 75 miles from here, back in January, you could tell they were on their last legs. The lower level had some good deals, everything at Ross prices, but the upper level was incredibly empty. The whole upper level was about 1/3rd filled, with vast areas of the store completely empty. I was not at all surprised when they announced closure later that month. That was the last Sears in the state.
People keep shopping online, which is understandable, but then they don't understand why everything closes locally. It doesn't help when these troubled brands are bought by these liquidation holding companies who have no idea how to run a retail business.
How has it been in your area, Bonniegirl?
D-Dey 05-17-2020, 10:08 AM And I thought they were doing better than Sears lately.
IllinoisTVFan 05-17-2020, 07:06 PM I would bet a lot of it has to do with malls not being what they were. Many of the malls I shopped at as a child or teen are long gone or barely surviving.
I'd hate to see it close. I buy our Levi Jeans there as well as T-Shirts & Sweatshirts for my husband and son. Most of their women's clothes are geared more to the older population. You very seldom see any people under 30 in our store.
SitcomsHeydayfan 05-18-2020, 01:50 AM Malls open back up tomorrow in my area with social distancing rules.
Hawkee 05-18-2020, 02:39 AM In retailers when it comes down to finding bargains at good prices JCPenney has always been the king of the department stores and it shows that a retailer can survive after so long. But back in the times JCPenney was the store where you could get good deals on almost everything you could think of and they sold their own exclusive brands such as St. John's Bay Worthington Gold Toe and others JCPenney knew that with a formula like this other stores would try to compete with them. But why I think JCPenney went downhill and is filing for bankruptcy is that they tried to copy Kohl's and if you visit any JCPenney store you'll see that the layout and remodeling job is exactly identical to Kohl's and that I think hurt JCPenney and that's why they wanted to improve their stores and image. But unlike Mervyn's Montgomery Ward Gottschalks and Emporium/Capwell I don't think JCPenney isn't ready to ride off into the sunset yet but I think they will start focusing on mail order catalogues and online shopping and perhaps revive their TV shopping channel that they used to have in the 80's-90's. But I also think that the popularity of bargain stores such as Big Lots DD's Discounts TJ Maxx Marshall's and Ross Dress For Less have hurt JCPenney terribly. But with Target Old Navy Walmart and Stein Mart being top stores to find clothing I think JCPenney will continue to improve and revert back to their old fashioned formula

Coffeecup 05-19-2020, 07:34 PM yes I am sorry for the stores closing but what few have closed I haven't been in years. I did like Sears for TV sets, electronics, vacuum cleaners + home gizmos. I tend to think that many lesser price stores will hang on. I did read Neimas Marcus was having tough times too. Then in time wonder if local stores will pop back on Main Street. . The stores now sell too darn much.
How was the foot traffic there before this stupid Coronavirus?
It was pretty much empty, and the only time that there would be foot traffic was when the holiday season came around.

It depends on the location. Some are busier than others.
It depends on the location. Some are busier than others.
You’re right about that. For example, there’s a city in New Hampshire that I've been to and there’s a mall that’s way busier than ours.

The local JCPenny in my area still does quite well. It has a nice hair salon too.
Chocolate Moose 05-27-2020, 10:06 AM You would think that there would always be a market for people who need things right away - stuff for kids, for cold weather, for events.

They were really doomed because the stuff they sell you can mostly get online.
Unlike JCPenny, Macy's or other clothing retailers many people like to actually try clothes on & see & feel them up close. Or try perfumes & makeup before they buy.
Can't do that on Amazon!

Yeah, the one closest to me also does pretty well and has a hair salon ! So thinking and hoping this one won't be closed real soon ! ;)

Ours seems to do pretty well in all the clothing departments ! Well, like you I only shop the men's at Christmas time for gifts which is on another floor than the womens, so it is busy around that time , but I can't really say if they do a lot of business other times of the year !?
But as for the women's, what I always liked about JC Penney is it has clothing for all ages and sizes of women! ;)Our JC Penney Jr.dept..has really cute clothes , and does as much business as the older women clothing departments! Even older and heavier I still find things there in Jrs.in X Large , and there are lots of shoppers , just as many as in the older women sections, so there is a good chance this store might stay open till they all eventually close, but not just yet ! ;)

I agree!! Online shopping is fun, but it really is better ( and more fun ) to actually go in the store and be able to try on the clothes !;) Hard to tell the exact fit and even the color can look different than it looks from a picture on your computer screen ! ;) I've been disappointed before ordering clothing on line, like a certain shade of blue looked really beautiful and upon receiving the clothing was totally not the vibrant shade of blue it looked in the picture !!
I heard today that Pier One is going out of business, too. I hate to hear that.
And my location happens to be closing too.
Schmoopie 05-28-2020, 04:09 PM I certainly hope not b/c I've been getting my hair cut there for years. I know that my stylist could probably find another salon, but it woudl be sad, if they closed forever. I worked at three stores-one in Texas and two in Washington State and hopefully they will be around for a while.

You guys can relax till at least 2023. I think JCPenny has a big payment due by then but hopefully they can restructure that debt with the bankruptcy they're doing.
A lot of people do NOT want to see Pennys close & have Amazon take over the world!
80sTrivia 06-06-2020, 05:38 AM They just announced the Penney's store in the town nearest to me is closing for good in August. It hasn't even re-opened from when it closed down in March due to the pandemic...
SitcomsHeydayfan 06-07-2020, 01:06 AM Some good news! Nothing is final yet but it's better than nothing! Penny's stock up 50%!
Private equity firm Sycamore Partners is in preliminary talks to acquire JCPenney out of bankruptcy should the US department store chain’s negotiations with its creditors fail, three people familiar with the matter said on Friday.
Shares of JCPenney jumped almost 55 percent on the news.
JCPenney, which employs roughly 85,000 people, filed for bankruptcy protection in May after the coronavirus pandemic forced it to temporarily close its more than 800 stores across the US, compounding financial woes that stemmed from years of dwindling sales.
Sycamore is weighing acquiring JCPenney outright or making an investment in the troubled retailer, the sources said.

Yes, Alexander's was great!
As for Gimbles and Woolworths, I love how they had lunch counters! When I was a teenager in the '80s, I would love to hang out with a chicken salad sandwich (I ate meat back then) with my pals after shopping! Before that in the '70s when I was a young child, I would get tuna on toast with my mom after we did school shopping.

You never heard of Caldor????!!! Where were you in the '80s and early '90s? I guess maybe it was a state thing. Here in New York there were a lot of Caldor department stores back then.

That must be a regional chain because it never existed in my area.

Yeah, those were awesome! Remember looking for Christmas presents in those?
Also the Sears & Famous Barr catalogs. Famous Barr was bought out by Macy's.
WilliamHBonney 06-09-2020, 05:36 AM Sad to hear, although when I was in school during the 90's the youth apparel for kids was decidedly uncool, though ironically their golfish clothing and suit's/dress clothing geared toward the ww2 generation was lowkey awesome. Also was somewhat fashionable when the Swing revival hit in the mid and late 90's and it was dapper to be dressed like Frank Costanza from Seinfeld.
OH Nuts! 06-09-2020, 08:29 AM I like JCP & hope they find a way to recover. I like brick & mortar shopping but, it seems more and more, it’s going the way of the dinosaur. COVID may be the Final nail in the coffin.
