View Full Version : Mindy's and Charlotte's relationship.
80s Dude 05-12-2020, 10:24 AM A couple of weeks ago, I posted a video interview from 2012 where Charlotte said she didn't have that close of a relationship with Mindy. There was also posts from past years on this board where posters said Mindy and Charlotte seem to be distant from one another.
I think I may know one of the reasons why. Charlotte has referred to Mindy many times as "chubby", including in her book. Perhaps Charlotte should have said that she admired Mindy's sense of humor, outgoing personality, called her sweet and leave any words associated with being fat out of the picture. I imagine that Mindy must have become sensitive about her weight over the years. Even though the other Core Four had their weight issues, it never got to the point of Mindy's weight.
I know Charlotte was born and raised in a different era. An era where fat jokes were common and Charlotte had no problem making them even with her own weight issues. We have seen Charlotte not being politically correct over the years as with her "straight, straight, straight" comments a few years back when describing how the Facts of Life cast members escaped the pitfalls of the Different Strokes cast, but the media really hammered her when she really met "straight" as having a different meaning.

It strikes me so odd that they would be distant from one another since that whole story of how Charlotte found Mindy at the real boarding school and chose her personally because she reminded her of a childhood classmate.
I would've thought that would've formed some kind of instant bond with the 2 women. And Rae certainly had her weight issues and chubby years herself so it's surprising if Mindy became distant with her.
Oh well, that's reality I guess---not everything is what we see depicted on TV. Also, I think it should be factored in that Mindy was in her very awkward teenage years and her weight issue could've only compounded her insecurities at the time.
And after reading how Charlotte gave that poor girl a masturbation instruction book, hell, i'd be distant from that person too if I were a teen and some old lady (or old man if we reverse scenarios) handed me something like that! In fact, i'd be incredibly disturbed by it and probably need years of therapy afterwards!

It wasn't just Mindy though. There was a distance between Charlotte and all the Core Four starting with season 2 (don't let valentina click on this thread!!!!!!!!!)
Charlotte discusses this in her book (which Retro STILL has not yet read ;) ). She said she didn't understand why until after the series was over and Nancy McKeon told her that the girls all thought she (Charlotte) was management, but Charlotte corrected her, "No, I wasn't management, I was one of you all!" They thought she had executive power to wield on the set. I think they were scarred by the cast purge and assumed Charlotte had some say in that, especially since she hand-picked Mindy and brought her on board.

cfr, don't you know anything??* That's just how it goes in Hollywood! Why, on "Another World", when Anna Stuart (Donna Love) learned her long lost TV daughter Anne Heche (Vicky Hudson) had never touched herself, she gave Vicky some "intimate self-toys" to use in solo pleasure. Welcome to Hollywood cfr!!
*(kidding of course, just being funny for the topic, lol)

I haven't read it either yet and I really gotta get it!! That's kinda sad to think they all considered her the "Boss" of them during the filming years instead of friends.
I can just picture Charlotte saying to the core four after finding this out...."You mean all this time....we could've been friends?!" (I wonder how many movie buffs will get that one?)

I'm glad I never saw such a scene! Vicky was my total favorite when she first came to town posing as her good twin sister to swindle the family out of their millions.:wave:

Yes, it is. That special level gone, all because of a never-communicated misunderstanding.

I don't, but the quote is very fitting, lol.

Well it wasn't a "scene"! That wasn't something in the Love mansion or Vicky's house! Anne wrote a book called "Call Me Crazy" after her mental issues were made public (hence the title), and she divulged it in there. I haven't read it, but I saw it in a used bookstore once and skimmed through it looking up AW stuff.

It's from "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" (Tootie would know it being the big Bette Davis fan she is!)
Now i'm picturing a FOL version of "Baby Jane" where Lisa Whelchel is Baby Jane and Nancy M is the sister being tortured by her. In fact Lisa kidnaps Nancy M, Mindy and Kim and hold them all hostage in an exact replica of the Eastland Cafeteria custom built in her basement.
Lisa has snapped and forever lives in 1982 FOL era in her mind. She wears a gross looking Blair wig and flips it while croaking out "I've had another one of my <cough cough> BRILLIANT <cough> ideas!" to the horror of the 3 captives.
She's waiting on Mrs. Garret's arrival and wondering why she's so late to the party and not arriving? The 3 try desperately to escape from crazy Blair and they do while Blair is admiring her old decrepid self in the mirror cackling how "gorgeous" she still is.
They stumble onto a room where to their horror they see an old skeleton rocking in a chair with poofy red hair up in a bun and holding the old Edna's Edibles sign.
Blair finds them with a hatchet and offs them all while one by one while happily singing the FOL theme song.
And yet again...it's Blair who's the killer. HA!----Hey, I know it's no "Come Back to the Truck Stop Natalie Green", but it's a spur of the moment off the top of my head. Maybe Natalie can punch it up on her word processor.

Well can ya blame her?!? If you're gonna snap, that's the way to go!

It sure is a happy place to be! No PODS, or crammed in characters...just our Mrs. G and her "girls" at Eastland. No I couldn't blame her at all especially these days...it's where i'd want to forever be too.:wave:

I can see Lisa, Mindy and Kim gleefully doing a parody like this, and maybe Nancy M if she's loosened up from her "I'm a serious actress" mentality. The rest of the gals I can definitely see having a ball with it.

They had a ball with "Seven Little Indians", so I'm sure they'd have a ball with this!

Indeed. Lisa even participated in the Blair-Tootie Project on Nick at Nite, back in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

Mindy never struck me as someone who cared about her weight, but that may just be because that's how Natalie was. Charlotte certainly was lighthearted about weight jokes about herself. Even Julie Pie got a bunch of weight jokes thrown at her!

She gave her WHAT????? Well I guess that was something not really discussed in those days... maybe Charlotte was just trying to help?

I read about that here so it's not my words! Can someone who actually passed this info confirm it and perhaps even elaborate on it more? Was this said by Mindy during an interview?

I've already CLICKED 80sSitcoms!:typing::typing::typing:
I knew already about CHARLOTTE seeing as the manager of the 'Core of 4', but i don't necessarily see it as being distant:i read on the contrary, that CHARLOTTE was close to LISA and NANCY, and that she even went to their ranch and met their kids. I don't know whether she was close to MINDY or TOOTIE though.....:yeahthat:yeahthat:yeahthat
PS: i always picture CHARLOTTE RAE as the maternal type (just like MRS G) so i really cannot picture her distant to anyone and especially the 'core of 4' (they had such a great dynamic and a fantastic chemistry on the set!):grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:

Yes, but that closeness was really bonded after the show was off the air.

Well I've told you before and I'll tell you again, lol, she was NOT "the maternal type"---Kim Fields says so on camera in at least one interview. I'm sorry to burst your bubble about the "feisty redhead", but it's the truth---it's a "fact"! ;) :bash::bash::bash:

Yes of course she’s a good actress! Most actors are nothing like who they portray on tv.
80s Dude 05-13-2020, 09:16 AM But in the recent documentary, both Julie Pie and Julie Ann said Charlotte was motherly to them. I guess it depends on the person.

In this case I think it depends on the season. In season 1 they were a new pseudo-family gathered together for this new TV show. They were all fellow actresses embarking on a new journey together.
It apparently changed after the cast purge of season 1. When the few girls left started back up on the show with the new girl, they now believed that Charlotte was a part of management. They apparently thought she was part of getting rid of the former cast members.

You know, i actually think you might be right: i always felt that MRS G as a housemother in season 1 was warmer than the nutritionist she became in season 2.
However, between season 3 and season 6 she reverted as the warm motherly type (it's the impression i got from reading between the lines, and from her body language).
And yes, i believe the 'Core of 4' might have have felt intimidated by her when the whole cast purge occurred and the 'new girl' (NANCY) joined them. However, i think it was only temporarily, and that in time they became a close gang: there is no way you can work with someone in the film industry for 8 years and not bond! That's just NOT possible!
I could believe that, if you were working in an office or in the retail industry: you don't necessarily bond with your co workers since you spend most time, either on the phone or serving customers.
Nevertheless, if you're working for MANY years (not just making a one movie where you worked for a couple of months with a bunch of actors) with someone in a sitcom, you're bound to get to know the person, and get close to her/him.
Whats more: CHARLOTTE even went to Paris with the girls for the one film they made!:so:so:so
PS: i also watched an interview both (CHARLOTTE and LISA) attended, where they were interviewed by a TV reporter, and they said they were still meeting (it dated from 1992 which was only 4 years after FOL finished) with a heavilypregnant LISA who said she went to some barbecue at CHARLOTTE and that NANCY joined them too.
I know most fans said the actresses didn't meet in YEARS, but on this interview shows a different story....
