Man, whose bright idea was that sucky character? I couldn’t stand Pimppa either, but at least she had the Australian thing going for her and she wasn’t a complete jerk.

She was a mulleted little munchkin who was trying to act tough. When she pulled that crap during the “Lords of Discipline” episode (asking for protection money and breaking things in the store), I would have grabbed her by the back of the neck, and tossed her out of the store. And later, I would have called the police on her and NEVER allowed her back.

She made no sense either. Oh, here’s this neglected little kid, so she’s going to find acceptance by making friends at the local gourmet food shop?

I take great pleasure knowing that Nancy M apparently didn't like the addition of that character or the actress. I don't know if it's been confirmed to be true but if it is, I love it!!

She added nothing to the show except for being someone to hate. I'm sure the show got angry letters about her since she got the boot just a few months later.

In my opinion she's the worst character ever appeared on the show, even Pippa is better than her. When you steal Edna's Edibles, you know it's over with the public :lol:. I never liked her, she's a bad Jo clone with a strange obsession for Jo. I never understood why they put her in the opening credits, she appeared in something like 6 episodes with very small roles

Pamela Adlon blamed Nancy M. for going to the producers and making her character unlikable. She also said Nancy M. and Lisa froze her out without mentioning names. But according to Andy Borowitz, Nancy M. was referred to as "Angry Jo" by the producers and writers.

I wish they had done more with Alexandra, because I thought the whole gag where Edna finds her irritating was pretty funny. If they had shipped Blair and Jo off to a spinoff, and Alex had been one of the new girls, it would have been funny to see Mrs. G adjusting to one of the girls who annoys her.

valentina, some people think "Graduation" was a spin-off attempt to catapult Blair and Jo into college life on their own show. But to me, you can't call that episode a spin-off, because nothing is actually spun off.

The writers tried this again and again: first with Kelly, then with Andy and later Permppa.

To me, it never worked. Kelly was unlikable, but while Andy and Pippa were both friendly, there was this sense of, "Why are these kids ten years younger than the rest of the cast hanging out with these girls?" Why is 24-year old Jo hanging out with 12-year-old Andy? The thing is, they could have given valid reasons. But Andy first appears in Season 6, and he isn't adopted until two and a half seasons later.

Back to Kelly. It's not Pamela's fault that Kelly was made unlikable. She couldn't do anything else with that role, and the horrible things Kelly was scripted to do.

My understanding (and I can't prove it at this time) is that for a brief period in the early to mid-1980s, TV shows had to put actors in the opening credits if they appeared in more than X number of episodes, per SAG rules. Pamela appeared in 9, according to IMDB:

Coming to realize how cool Pamela Arlon (Seagall) is as a person makes me see Kelly in a new light. I agree the character feels shoehorned in and annoying, but there’s probably a good reason. She got just about a bad deal as the other girls from Season One. According to an interview she did on a podcast (Allison Rosen is My New Best Friend, about 5 or 6 years ago), Pamela said Kelly was supposed to be a regular character, Jo’s cousin. She had also auditioned for the episode “Jo’s Cousin”. But “someone”, Pamela doesn’t name names went to the network and and argued for a change. The writers wanted to evolve Jo to become more feminine and the new tomboy character would have undermined her. Pamela went from a full time role to a few appearances. I guess they had to leave her in the credits for contractual reasons. Everyone but Nancy and Lisa was nice to her, and she felt alienated and unhappy onset.

Sorry, but you're totally mistaking with the ages: the girls WEREN'T 10 years older than ANDY and PIPPA!!!!

Good to hear your perspectives, SM!

I think it's true that Pamela got a bum deal, too. And given better writing, the character might have worked out. But they quickly made her irredeemable. Whose fault that is, we may never know. Pamela indicates it was maybe Nancy McKeon, but did Nancy really have that much influence on the show? She had to go on strike just to get the money she felt she was due.

According to an interview she did on a podcast (Allison Rosen is My New Best Friend, about 5 or 6 years ago), Pamela said Kelly was supposed to be a regular character, Jo’s cousin. I guess they had to leave her in the credits for contractual reasons. Everyone but Nancy and Lisa was nice to her, and she felt alienated and unhappy onset.

We have discussed that podcast here, and it's SO sad that Pamela felt unwelcome, but it was also really refreshing (from a viewer's perspective) to get perspectives from outside the Core Four, who were typically the ones interviewed over many years.

With social media becoming a dominant force, we now have a much better sampling of how actors and actresses felt; we've recently heard from Pamela and actors such as "Neil from Sex Symbol". We've gotten to see how similar Pamela's experience was to Felice's: trying out for a backdoor pilot and instead getting a different part, only to see that role not be what was promised, and eventually getting the boot when the character didn't work out.

It's a pattern that seemed to repeat itself.

No, it’s not true - just an urban legend. During that same season, Dixie Carter appeared in nine episodes of “Diff’rent Strokes” and was in the closing credits. In the previous season, John Ratzenberger appeared in all the episodes of the first season of Cheers, but was billed in the end credits all year. Jason Bateman is another one - appeared in 13 episodes of the first season of “Silver Spoons” and 8 episodes in the second season, but was billed in the closing credits.

Pamela Segall was in the intro because they planned to make her a main character and then realized it wasn’t working.
