Seems odd that she would keep that to herself, especially since the police were involved. Of course, then they would have had to expel Jo.

View Full Version : Shouldn’t Edna have reported Jo to Mr. Harris for shoplifting? TV Guy 05-10-2020, 09:55 AM Seems odd that she would keep that to herself, especially since the police were involved. Mrs. G. covered that up too. cfr1970 05-10-2020, 12:04 PM And what about Tootie (who was only 13) underage drinking? Mrs. G. covered that up too. LOL "covered it up" makes it sound so sinister! I just watched that one and I think Mrs. G was just going by her instincts. When Mr. Parker came into the kitchen and Mrs. G realized Tootie was drunk, she instinctively did her best to divert his attention from it rather than just say "Mr. Parker this young girl is DRUNK!" I think part of it was her motherly instinct to protect Tootie and also she was protecting her own ass since the girls were her responsibility. And i'm sure she wanted to know what the hell was going on first! After she got the whole story, she still decided to "cover it up" because she knew the girls were responsible and would most likely not do it again and she did specifically say next time this happens, she goes to Mr. Parker and slowly closes the door all scary and threatening lol. But after stealing a van, going to a bar, shoplifting a blouse for her birthday gift, and now getting drunk, you'd think Mrs. G would've thrown her hands up in the air and said "The hell with all of you bitches. I can't take this anymore!" and went back to the dorms to live with the well behaved Lost Girls.:lol: 80s Dude 05-10-2020, 12:14 PM LOL "covered it up" makes it sound so sinister! With the van incident, Mr. Harris did find out about it, but let them stay in school. He probably thought it was cheaper for the 4 to work in the cafeteria than paying adult workers. The Lost Girls were not really always well behaved. The first girl that Mrs. G. got angry at and lost her temper with was Molly. Wawwie 05-10-2020, 01:13 PM Why should she have reported Jo for shoplifting at a store? Unless Jo committed a crime on school grounds, it's not the headmaster's business. '80sSitcoms 05-10-2020, 01:42 PM I think it's because Jo wasn't doing something criminal to be "bad". Her heart was in the right place; she was doing this for Mrs. Garrett. She just needed guidance in knowing she doesn't have to resort to stealing to show someone she cares. As for Tootie, like cfr said, she probably wanted to see what the hell was going on first. And she was going to report them until Blair came up with the idea of her punishing them instead. And she was overwhelmed saying there was no way she could punish them harshly enough, but she was willing to give it a shot, and did. And, like cfr says, got all scary and threatening saying, "But girls*, next time you pull a stunt like this, you're on your ooowwwnnnn....." [door click] *("girls" or "bitches," depending on if you're cfr reading this.) Why should she have reported Jo for shoplifting at a store? Unless Jo committed a crime on school grounds, it's not the headmaster's business. Well the Chugalug wasn't on school grounds either. Both were crimes in the community. I guess she figured since they were already busted and "chained" on probation, she could handle this single incident involving a wayward girl who had a good intention but just the wrong action. Wawwie 05-10-2020, 01:45 PM Well the Chugalug wasn't on school grounds either. Both were crimes in the community. I guess she figured since they were already busted and "chained" on probation, she could handle this single incident involving a wayward girl who had a good intention but just the wrong action. That crime did involve the school because they stole the school van. Also, the crime did start on school grounds as they stole the van there. '80sSitcoms 05-10-2020, 01:47 PM That crime did involve the school because they stole the school van. Also, the crime did start on school grounds as they stole the van there. Ah, true. But, my other reasons still stand. cfr1970 05-10-2020, 02:07 PM *("girls" or "bitches," depending on if you're cfr reading this.) I caught the episode today where Mrs. G is overwhelmed with working her night job at the Howard Johnsons, and before it's revealed to them, the girls are all hounding her in the kitchen being completely selfish and the look on Mrs. G's face is both hysterical and frightening. This is SO where I could see her just exploding and letting out a line like "all you bitches only give a damn about yourselves!" I could see her saying exactly that in this kitchen scene because with each girl being so insensitive and being all about them and their problems, and practically demanding poor Mrs. G help them, you can almost see the steam coming out of Mrs. G's ears before she finally blows! FOL-FAN-ITA 05-10-2020, 02:12 PM I think she didn't say anything on both occasions to Mr. Harris/Mr. Parker because the girls were on probation and the situation could have been worse RetroGuy2000 05-10-2020, 02:33 PM I trust Mrs. Garrett's judgement. There are times when she referred things to the headmasters (marijuana, hot-wiring vans, and assaulting a police officer), and times when she handled the punishments herself (beer, paint, and shoplifting). Why would Eastland have put her in charge of he Core Four if she had to report every single violation to the headmaster? Lorimar Television 05-10-2020, 05:14 PM She also didnt report Sue Ann for smoking weed, they didnt tell her but I'm sure she had suspicion. It was one of the reasons I was disappointed when we find out in the reunion that she didn’t go into teaching, because to me, that was how she was going to “pay it forward”. I also like how she became close to Blair (and was disappointed by Blair’s “regression” in the last couple of seasons). “The Interview Show” sums it up nicely, when the two young women talk about how they value each other’s friendship. There’s a later episode when Blair casually introduces Jo as her best friend, without either of the characters making a joke about it - it’s a really cool moment. valentina warner 05-11-2020, 05:58 PM To me, the reason Jo was appealing was her character arc - the tough kid who is fundamentally changed by going to Eastland. That would really have made Jo's character arc come full circle: here, her life was completely changed by people giving her a better chance though education. In my own life, I was inspired by Mrs. Garrett and her example, and I eventually became a teacher, too (although I teach media production). Sometimes, the kids just need a push in the right direction. An education can make the difference between a kid choosing to become one of the Young Diablos or instead choosing to make something of him/herself. valentina warner 05-12-2020, 02:21 PM That's really well put.
