It's funny how years are so different just in those transitional, maturing teenage years when boys and girls are mentally and emotionally developing so much ("physically" notwithstanding, lol). Tumpy reminded me of one of the so called perpetual college/university students who are for ever in school because Daddy is loaded and wants to keep their slacker kid out of the house.

The actress that played Tumpy was in a quasi adult movie called Satan's Cheerleaders in 1977 so the actress had to be at least 21 years old when Dope was filmed and she looked older than 21.

Satan's Cheerleaders is only rated R. Why would she need to be 21?

That poor season one just gets no love! I looked at tomorrows Antenna TV schedule of the FOL marathon to see if i'll catch some Lost Girls episodes throughout the day, and they're only being shown from 5am to 7am. So if you want season 1 episodes you better get up bright & early Sunday morning! :sleep2:

Season 2 starts at 7:30am and the seasons progress through the day till it ends at 5am Monday morning! Damn that's a helluva long marathon! I originally thought it ended at midnight Sunday!

I don't get up till 10am so when the TV pops on tomorrow i'll be greeted with season 2 episode "Free Spirit"....where I think we meet Mrs. G's irresponsible son...and it says Natalie takes a liking to him, but I don't remember that!

It's not that kind of liking, lol.

But if they're gonna do a Mother's Day marathon I think they should do another show instead like "Mama's Family" or "The Brady Bunch" or even "Alice" (since we saw her son in pretty much every episode).

The Group should have had their own R-rated spinoff, if there had been a premium pay channel back then. Then they could have copied the tone of “Little Darlings” a lot more closely. Or maybe more like “Fast Times”.

I want them to bring Mama's Family to Antenna TV....i'll be so happy because the complete series set for that is a freaking hundred bucks which I am not paying....Good Lord and Hells Bells!

The marathon is on and that had that episode "Free Spirit" and now the suicide one is playing, and I notice that Natalie has lost her pig tails already! She has her hair in barettes instead. Were the pigtails gone by season 2?!

I have to say it's so nice to see them all young again and in the cafeteria. The more I watch the more I find the later seasons to be puke::barf:

Oh and I just noticed Mrs. G is a lefty too! So Beverly Ann and Mrs. G are both sisters and lefties!

What we saw in Natalie was Mindy's real persona. Even today when Mindy speaks at public engagements, she still sounds and acts like the early days of Natalie. Of course we knew her story of how she got on the show.

That's nice to know because I really like her character...the later seasons more than the early ones of course, but it's still nice to know that Mindy & Natalie are very similar to each other.

One thing i'm noticing with watching the marathon is how Natalie made her fake gasp after making a sarcastic remark or "unintended" insult towards someone in the early seasons too. (I only noticed it in the later seasons) She'll spew out the line, make the fake gasp as if to say "did I say that out loud?" and looks around lol.

Now I wonder if Mindy does it too?

I have it on the TV but i'm not sitting down and focusing on it. It's mainly on for the bird to have company....I'm certain one of these days i'm going to hear from his cage "I've just had another one of my brilliant ideas!" and I will run screaming from the house.

But I don't want to watch these edited versions so i'm not paying attention to them. I just popped in Graduation on the dvd though because I wanted to see this Alexandra person and to see how it could be perceived as a potential spin off.

I'm so glad I watched it though because it really was so good!!

Hey cfr1970 that's not true that season 1 gets no love!:nonono::nonono

You know very well, that The pilot and season 1 are my favourites: it's got BLAIR as the star, and that's enough for me!party:party

But i'm surely glad to hear that you feel like puking when you compare the later seasons to the earlier ones!!!!puke:puke: (no PODS in there indeed or lousy imitation of 'Twilight zone'hee hee!).

And yes, 'Graduation' is also one of my favourite episodes from season 4 (in fact, now that i'm having a RERUN, i find it to be one of my favourite seasons after the first one)
It's a true tender moment between MRS G and her two older girls: i especially love the fact that BLAIR gets jealous when MRS G gives JO the rock with a speech, and then hands BLAIR a jumper saying she's knitted it herself (with no speech).:rofl::rofl:

The dialogues between them are fantastic!
Blair: "You went all that trouble for me? There must be some story!"
Mrs. G: "I thought the green matches your eyes."
Blair: "And?"
Mrs G: "And? I thought it'll keep you warm?"
Blair: "That's it? What about all your words of wisdom? What about my inner self?"
Mrs G: "Blair, you don't need me to tell you about your inner self?

And then, the magic words:
Mrs G: "i can't think of a girl at school who's grown as much as you. You're sensitive, and caring, and i feel lucky to have you as my friend!"
Wow! Wasn't that some speech!
In that moment you see both: MRS G and BLAIR get emotional, and you feel the strong bond between them....

See what i mean about the early seasons: BLAIR was REAL, and so was MRS G, and the writers that were replaced from season 7 onward did a LOUSY job between those two great characters!!!!!:soapbox::soapbox::soapbox:

I can really hardly wait until you start with BLAIR's season: The 'Lost girls' one!

:cheer::cheer:

He comes out of his little box when the FOL theme song comes on lol (I don't keep him in a box! He has a cardboard box inside a buffet cabinet where he chews the whole thing up each day and then I make him a new one that he spends the next day chewing up...it's a whole process and complicated to explain....) but anyway....I think he likes the FOL opening. But he'll attack the TV if I play The Golden Girls. I'm serious too. He HATES that theme song for some reason. I don't know what the hell it is.

Maybe because years ago i'd leave the TV on all day to the Hallmark Channel where they played it endlessly and he's having PTSD flashbacks now when he hears it! But sometime I like to screw with him and play the theme song on You Tube just to see him go berserk. If I even start singing "Thank you for being a friend, he will literally fly at me to attack! No, the box is placed inside the buffet cabinet--he claimed that cabinet as his playpen a long time ago and chewed up the wood inside...it's a very long story...but to deter him from turning the entire cabinet into a heap of sawdust in my living room, I get a bunch of flat 11x8 boxes at Walmart for 62 cents each, put it together and place the box inside the cabinet where he'll spend all day chewing it to nothing...and in between chewing he takes naps in it....it sounds strange, but it keeps him occupied being a lonely single bird and there's no way in hell i'm getting him a second bird!!

I grew up on the Eastland years and know almost all of them. So when they played a few months ago I kept those on in the background too...Remember how I said I saw Jan Brady there and went to have lunch?

I want them to bring Mama's Family to Antenna TV....i'll be so happy because the complete series set for that is a freaking hundred bucks which I am not paying....Good Lord and Hells Bells!

Try Walmart. I bought the complete collection set with the Eunice movie and a couple of Family sketches for like 40 bucks. That's what it's worth IMO. There's edited episodes on the complete collection set. They edited Cellmates, one of Mama's Family's best episodes, and cut out her song in Mama runs for Mayor. I believe there's more, but these two stand out. It's not worth a hundred or more for that set. I was very disappointed with the release. I'm hoping one day a studio with re-release Mama's Family unedited and add all the Family sketches. Now that, I would pay over a hundred for because it would be worth it.

I'm not surprise. The couple of times I've watched Facts of their channel I noticed they had up to 6 minutes of commercial breaks. They also cut into the closing credits to air the opening credits of the next episode.

Yeah I did notice on the cover sticker it says "Broadcast Episodes" which sucks, but I haven't seen these episodes literally since the 1980's so I really want to have. I'll check Walmart---but not till all this virus mess is over with.

The only Walmart I go to now is the Neighborhood Market near me for groceries. I don't think I can deal with the big box stores during this crap. I just want to get in and out as it is. Seeing everyone walking around with masks doesn't enhance the shopping experience any!

And they seem to be purposely not selling things on their online store that they don't think are "essential" for us to buy. During all this, i've found Ebay to be the best place to get my dvd's.

Even Amazon for dvd's is like "will ship June such and such date"----because they don't think a damn dvd is "essential" so it goes to the back of the ordering pile. Screw that!

Ebay sellers get my dvds to my mailbox the same week!

Cellmates isn't even the broadcast version. It's the syndicated version. This is a pivotal episode for Mama and Eunice. Fans should be able to get that uncut.

I bought quite a few DVD collections over the last few weeks from Amazon. I noticed now the DVD sets are out of stock. Hold up cfr, I have some things to say as the biggest MF fan and resident expert around here. :singer:

First off, if you go to Walmart looking for MF, be careful. There were DVD releases of seasons 1 and 2 many years ago from Warner Brothers that were nothing but the regular syndicated shows, no original uncut shows, and no bonus features. Save your $ and don't shell out for those. That was so lazy, cheap, and uncaring for them to do that. What a slap in the face to fans.

A hundred bucks is pocket change for the initial box set release from Time Warner/Star Vista or all their individual seasons bought up together. You get TONS of bonus material (at least with the box set you do, since there's a whole extra "Bonus Features" disc alone, adding up to over 10 hours of bonus material---over 10 hours). Still, with individual seasons, you have the "Eunice" TV movie, a couple of "Family" sketches, and several interviews and a cast round table panel reunion.

Try Walmart. I bought the complete collection set with the Eunice movie and a couple of Family sketches for like 40 bucks.

You should have gotten more bonus features than just one teleplay and two sketches. I'm surprised you bought it in the first place because, IIRC, you don't even care to watch this show because you thought Mama was too strident.

That's what it's worth IMO.

Oh, it's priceless. It's just about the funniest sitcom ever. :)

There's edited episodes on the complete collection set. They edited Cellmates, one of Mama's Family's best episodes, and cut out her song in Mama runs for Mayor. I believe there's more, but these two stand out

They did not "edit" "Cellmates". The master videotape copies for "Cellmates" and "Mama's Boyfriend" could not be found, so they used the syndicated prints.

There are several musical cuts throughout the series, yes, but that is hardly a complaint from someone like me who had been waiting for years and years for this show to come to DVD (plus I still have my copies of all the episodes from USA so I have all the musical moments anyway).

I think one reason these musical edits don't bother me much is that because since I'm the highest level of super fandom you can be at for this show, I know every line of dialogue and inflection of the words in and out and front and back, so it's all ingrained in me anyway (like you with the entire FOL series).

It's not worth a hundred or more for that set.

Again, it's priceless. See above. What we MF fans got after years and years of waiting was a GOLD MINE of a release. :)

I was very disappointed with the release.

I don't know why. You should have been extremely disappointed in the Warner Brothers release, not the deluxe release that so much love and care went into from TL/SV. I'm a super fan and I was absolutely ELATED. So was my other great friend who loves and lives this show about as much as I do. We got the complete box set with the family album and the extra bonus features disc, and we freaking love it. To have all the "director's cut" prints of the NBC sketches with the extra minutes that hit the cutting room floor sewn back into the episodes, along with the Alistair Quince introductions and the original theme introductions with the original different footage, is a pure treasure, and worth millions alone. They're like "plays" now.

I'm hoping one day a studio with re-release Mama's Family unedited and add all the Family sketches. Now that, I would pay over a hundred for because it would be worth it.

I really doubt that'll happen. I believe the "Carol Burnett Show" people know the "Family" sketches are the most popular sketches from that show so that's why they haven't released a "Family" collection (which I would snap up in a heartbeat). They know everyone would buy it and then not put as much effort into buy the DVDs of the full variety show.

I still don't know why you even bought it since I thought you said you're not a fan of the show. You didn't like it if Mama yelled, but you don't mind if Maude does.

The one I bought is from Time Life. There's over 6 hours of bonus features but I'm not one who is big on bonus features like that tacky interview of Vicki and Mama. Although I did get a kick out of Vicki asking Mama, "how many children do you really have?"

No, there's more. Like the reunion they did as a cast. We learned Dorothy and Ken were like boyfriend / girlfriend on the set. I watched that. I wanted the Family sketches though.

As long as I have the episodes in good quality, I don't care about interviews or documentaries. I just want the episodes of the shows I enjoy.

I watched Eunice many years ago on YouTube. It's not a favorite of mine but it's nice having. I don't like the sketch of Eunice breaking down over Mama's death. It's too sad for me.

I remember USA airing Major Dad, Wings, Gimme A Break, My Two Dads, and of course my personal favorite, The Facts of Life. They must have gotten Mama's Family after Facts stopped airing. I think I stopped watching USA when Facts stopped airing come to think of it.

I probably have spent $5,000 or more on my DVD collection. When DVD season sets first started coming out back in the early 2000's, sets were like 50 to 60 bucks. Just for a season! Thankfully they've come down in prices. But from Buffy to Dark Shadows, The Facts of Life to Maude, Melrose Place to Desperate Housewives, and so many, many more I just can't stop buying TV shows on DVD. I look at it as an investment since I no longer need cable or those streaming services.

That is so foreign to me. How can any fan NOT want cast and crew interviews??? I can't imagine not wanting everything you can have all about your favorite show, learning all about its origins, production, progress, characters, and relatinships. Wow.

But, to each his own!

If you're referring to me, it's because the bonus features are very rarely ever closed captioned. It's not that I don't "want" them, but more why bother with them since they're inaccessible to me? Therefore I just go for the main content which has to suffice until they make changes or the ADA rips them a new one for making their content inaccessible to all buyers.

I just recently read a book by a writer/producer who said Gabe Kaplan made it hell for them on "Welcome Back, Kotter", so they eventually had him only do the teaser and tag scenes of the show so they wouldn't have to deal with him.

This same writer/producer was next on "Three's Company", and he said it was a very badly written show, "but at least it was consistently badly written", lol.
