I was watching the June's Birthday episode today and in the scene where Beaver's class sings Old McDonald at the Mother's Club Tea was the actress who would go on to be the voice of Wilma Flintstone, Jean Vander Pyl. She played one of the club members.

I should also point out that Vander Pyl was in a later episode as Penny Woods' mother.

She had small parts in several episodes. She had a one liner where she told June she (June) had the husband who couldn't do anything, probably a season 4 episode. And in Wally and Alma, Alma's mother, who was concerned she kept June from her dishes.

That was the episode where Mrs. Mondello had a headache because of her 17 year old daughter.

I say she should have this once. YES,she would have looked ridiculous but could have explained it away by saying Beaver gave it to her yesterday for her birthday. I think the other mothers would have understood; I bet they got some pretty yucky gifts from their youngsters at one time too. And ugly as the shirt was, it was beautiful in the sense it came from someone she deeply loved.

Later, she could explain to Beaver why the blouse is inappropriate to wear in certain venues. She surely could keep wearing it every once and a while around the home, where only the boys would have seen it.

The Cleavers seem to be obsessed with projecting the "proper" image, so running a risk of giving someone an opportunity to draw a conclusion based upon a single instance (you only get one chance to make a first impression, etc)...is not something I see June willing to risk.

She could have spilled permanent ink on the blouse on purpose, and explained to Beaver that it was an accident, and she had to change plans at the last minute.

She'd have no way of knowing the class would be there. And a reminder, she WAS set to wear it, and Ward was the one who talked her out of it.

Hey, you know....after "eat you spinach and grow strong like Popeye", "let's find how many eggs the Easter Bunny left for you", and "He knows if you've been bad or good".....then I'd suspect "Oh I spilled ink all over it" would come quite naturally.

I'm not really trying to single-out June specifically. Just editorializing on the way parents have always cut themselves "artistic license" where the little people are concerned.

I suppose in some instances they justified it as "protecting us", or doing whats "best". Preserving our innocence.....etc

Then, when Johnny turns 20,.... everyone wonders why he's detached from reality...lol!

I think there also is a twinge of satire on all the improbable maladies that Beaver got himself into, only to have to explain his way out of it. So he shouldn't have that hard of a time believing his mother found hardship as well.

As I've suggested before, all June had to do was wear the blouse and put a nice, dressy jacket on over it. That way, she could claim that she wore it, and in the off chance that Beaver showed up, she could take the jacket off and show the blouse.

Here's something June could have said to Beaver to create some controversy: "I'm sorry I didn't wear it, Beaver, but your father talked me out of it. I think you need to take that up with him."

The thing that stands out the most to me was though that, no doubt for the sake of plot convenience, how readily Beaver and Wally decided to split the 5 dollars and each get their own gift for her.

When we were young, I remember times of my father discreetly sliding us ( my brother and I ) some cash so we could buy our mother a christmas/birthday/mother's day gift. Our relationship, at times, was far more contentious than the one depicted between Wally and Beaver. Our desire to pool our money for the most financial "muscle" for gift buying far outweighed a difference of opinion, which we always worked out.

I ran the figures through an inflation calculator, and five 1959 dollars come out to just under 45 dollars today. I should think that, given today, 22 dollars and change ( even less considering taxes ) wouldn't give much to choose from.

I think some of the arguments start too quickly, and this is an example. And during this time and later when they were in the kitchen arguing, Beaver was at max annoying.

Another argument that was a little unrealistic was the episode where Beaver was a guest at Larry's house, and they had a discussion about watching TV vs. playing checkers. It turned into a fight way too quickly, even for kids. And Beaver ended going home.

Yeah I always thought that too. Way over the top dramaticization and subsequent escalation. Obvious it was necessary to drive the plot, but pretty lame nonetheless.

Yeah there's a lot of plot lines that, if changed, would end up with no script or one that was short on time.

and therein lies the reason for the "over-the-top" storylines, lol sad to say...

Realistically speaking, my mother would've just told me "Oh I just love it, but it's much too festive to wear to such a simple luncheon sweetheart, but this will be PERFECT for the next party your father and I attend! I have even have matching shoes and can get a nice purse to make it complete!"
