Silver Spoons on Antenna TV today had Arnold Jackson cavorting with Ricky Stratton which puts this show in the same universe as FOL! I never knew Arnold was on this show. I had to have seen it as a kid but completely forgotten he made a crossover appearance there.

So since Kimberly is Arnold's sister and she went to Eastland with the girls, that makes FOL, Different Strokes and Silver Spoons all in the same reality. I had no idea! Am I the last one to realize this?!

Now i'm picturing all these scenarios where the FOL girls crossover to Silver Spoons!

Did Ricky go to Bates Academy?! I know he went to a private school but never knew the name. It would be hilarious is that was the school he went to! Now I wonder if he even lived in Peekskill too. I know the show was set in upstate NY.

I never watched 'SILVER SPOONS', but i know the main character played in the movie THE CHAMP: i watched it as a kid, and it was the saddest film i'v seen it made me cry! (especially the end, when his father dies after the boxing):(:(:(

I wasn't aware of the Silver Spoons connection, but of course most of us knew of the Facts of Life/Diff'rent Strokes/Hello Larry/Fresh Prince crossovers. Kinda cool that that adds a fifth show to the Diff'rent Strokes universe! Can you think of any others?

Tell me about the Hello Larry & Fresh Prince! Who crossovered to those shows? Wow--5 different sitcoms connected to each other in the same universe. That's really cool.

Arnold and Mr. Drummond appear on Fresh Prince. It's a cool cameo.

There were several DS/HL crossovers. The first one was the two-part "The Trip" (March 30th, 1979). The second was the two-part "Fussin' and Feudin'" (September 28th, 1979), and the third was the two-part "Thanksgiving Crossover" (November 28th, 1979). Usually, all the characters crossed over onto the other show. So there are three sets of two-episode crossovers. However, the DS crossovers could not save HL, and the series was cancelled after its second season.

The HL crossover episodes were later repackaged as episodes of Diff'rent Strokes.

I have a vague recollection of Hello Larry, but don't think I ever watched it when it was on and i'll have to look for the Fresh Prince one online. It's probably on you tube...and I think The Jeffersons also did a cameo on Fresh Prince so I guess technically we can add them to the same sitcom universe too!

Wow I didn't even think about that but it's true! All those sitcoms existed within the same realm together. But here's where things get wonky then....Charlotte Rae appeared in All in the Family as the Tupperware lady---but since it's now learned that they all technically share the same universe--it shouldn't have been possible! Unless it was Mrs. Garrett shilling Tupperware in the early 70's.

Oh and speaking of actors playing different characters in the same TV universe, I saw last week that the girl who played Blair's uppity friend in New York New York, also played Kimberly's apartment roommate on DS afterwards as a different character.

When I saw it, I thought it was Blair's same friend, but she was playing someone else. I was like "That's not possible! That's Blair's friend who tells people to "turn blue!".:lol:

Oh, good point. That's quite a dilemma. Because if they're in the same universe, then Mrs. Garrett has a doppelganger!

Silver Spoons
All in the Family
The Jeffersons
Maude
Fresh Prince
Hello Larry
Coed Fever

Coed Fever had no relation to Norman Lear productions. The Facts of Life used the common room, bed rooms, and class rooms sets from Coed Fever. Also actresses Alexa Kenin and Heather Thomas had parts in films with the Facts of Life girls. As mentioned previously Alexa Kenin was in that Facts of Life episode.

Coed Fever was a college sorority house that went Coed instead of a younger girls boarding school. They had a house mother and a resident feminist too like the Facts of Life.

Remove Coed Fever; it's not in the same universe, despite being taped at Metromedia and its set eventually being used on FOL.

But nice catch on Maude! And here are more, all short-lived series in the same universe:

Checking In (Florence's spin-off; four episodes aired)
Gloria (Archie's daughter's spin-off; one season)
704 Hauser (the character of Joey Stivic returns from AitF; six episodes aired)

I'd say both Lucy and AITF would both be in the top 5 of all time ever sitcoms. I guess Lucy has to be at #1 since that was the trailblazer to set the standards for all that followed.

MTM would also be in the top 5. So that makes 3.....As for the other 2, it's difficult to pick so i'll leave that open. But i'd say Lucy, Mary & Archie are the top 3 sitcoms ever. :)

I know that episode, lol.

Actually, a number of TV shows had Gary Coleman appear as "himself" (a fictionalized version of himself); I wouldn't count those as in-universe because he wasn't playing Arnold Jackson.

CFR, are you aware of the Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis? (https://thetommywestphall.wordpress.com/the-master-list/)
This is the theory that 419 TV shows all belong in the same universe. It's a cool theory, but personally, I reject it, because they use flimsy evidence, such as the idea that a fictional brand of cigarettes on one show, mentioned in another show, means that the shows are set in the same universe. (Tommy Westphall was the autistic child in the last, infamous episode of St. Elsewhere.)

I never watched St. Elsewhere but I heard about that ending where I think the whole show was inside some snowglobe?! I want to watch that series but the whole thing hasn't been released on dvd so there's no point in starting until it's all out.

I can't see how over 400 sitcoms can all be connected without some extreme mental gymnastics going on to connect them all. I'm sure it's fun to try and connect them, but there's just no way. And here I though I was so clever linking my 10.

Yes, the final episode of St. Elsewhere *spoiler alert* had the whole series be part of the autistic child's imagination. But because characters from another show appeared on St. Elsewhere, and so on, and so on, the theory is that Tommy is imagining 400+ TV shows.

But we're up to 12, now, and I do think it's clever. The Tommy Westphall Hypothesis, though, is a little different, in that any similarity can be linked: I mentioned cigarette brands, but I think another common link is possibly "Shasa" brand soda and "Vista" brand credit cards.

I had no idea someone went and linked ALL of them!

As far as I know, they didn't link ALL of them. There's no mention of FOL or DS or HL in this image (https://i0.wp.com/blog.marksimon.de/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Crossovers_2016.png), that I can see, anyway. And it includes different genres, including sitcoms, drama, sci-fi, etc. Which... seems a tad out there.

Hi cfr1970!

You'll never believe what a nightmare of a night i am having (worse than FRIDAY THE 13TH!): we had a leaking problem with the electrical shower and the water won't stop!!!! My flatmates rang a plumber but we have to wait until the next day and probably have the whole shower changed!!! (That's why i haven't been online for a while now):eek::eek:

In answer to your question: the most classic sitcoms ever for me, would be either 'I LOVE LUCY' (as Retro suggested) or 'THE BRADY BUNCH'. Like i said, i have never watched 'ALL IN THE FAMILY' (although i think i'v heard of it)....

Now about tonight's episode on FOL, i watched 'DOO-WAH' and it's getting more and more ABSURD as we speak!!!

For instance, i cannot take it any longer with MRS G: in this episode she was acting more like a dummy with the strings (or a hamster running like crazy in a cage!) trying to speak in Russian, and driving the girls insane with her ABSURD and HYPER behaviour!
If she was trying to be funny she totally failed!
When she worked as a housekeeper for the DRUMMONDS, she was bubbly and hilarious, but her character on season 7 has turned for the worse!!!
She has become basically a VEGETABLE, and the girls no longer seem interested in her, anyway.....:mad::mad:

The only good thing was BLAIR singing (the JULIE ANDREWS version that JO didn't like hee hee!): she's got a great voice!

And yes, street Urchin ANDY is slowly becoming a BORE......:rolleyes::rolleyes: (i like GEORGE better)

:bash::bash::bash:

An "electrical shower"?! Somehow that doesn't sound too pleasant to me lol. In fact it sounds downright terrifying! Electricity in the shower?! I think i'd rather stay dirty!

Yes, this is the episode where Mrs. G just makes short appearances studying her Russian and then exiting quickly. I think i'd rather have had her just be gone over these reduced appearances. She deserved better than that.

At least Blair didn't say let's hide her in the back this time.

This is the one where Natalie & Tootie wear their old lady looking Golden Girl outfits and El Debarge sings with them. I liked this one, but yeah, Street Urchin was already getting on my nerves at this point. But sadly, he stays on the show till the end. puke:

By ELECTRICAL SHOWER, i meant it's not manual: when you hit the on/off button, the water comes on:p:p:p

Yep: TOOTIE and NAT were dressed like 'grannies' in this episode, and EL DEBARGE had the exact same voice and attitude as JERMAINE JACKSON hee hee!

And it really hurts me to see MRS G made a fool off: so she should definitely stay hidden in the back (as BLAIR would say!):lol::lol:

I'm actually considering buying season 8 after all the good reviews i'm reading, and also because it's the last time we see MRS G back to normal before she leaves for good

I am definitely NOT buying season 7 though!!!!:eek::eek:

Did the crossover make sense or was it a desperate attempt to gain viewers for Silver Spoons? That may have been the case since Silvers Spoons was new at the time

Did she play the same character on that show? Then it could be another sitcom added to the universe. Wow, we should be over 10 at this point!

Facts of Life
Different Strokes
Silver Spoons
All in the Family
The Jeffersons
Maude
Fresh Prince
Hello Larry
Coed Fever

Aw, that's 9...we need just 1 more!

Oh wait....Good Times! Because Florida the maid spun off there from Maude!

Now we have 10 different sitcoms that all lived within the same universe together.

nope not the same universe, good times was in chicago and Maude was in NY:lol:

From what I saw, none of it made any sense. Arnold was writing a story for his class paper on Ricky (why or how that's even possible I have no freaking clue lol.)

Anyway, in Ricky's room Arnold watches while Ricky does some kind of War Games thing where he hacks into an FBI top secret fighter jet blueprint or some such nonsense.

Arnold writes the story with a picture and of course his little school paper alerts the attention of the FBI and hilarity ensues. I think they wound up on a boat hiding from the authorities, but I really wasn't paying much attention. I was just shocked to see Arnold cavorting with Ricky Shroder because I have zero recollection of the shows crossing over.

Looking at the air date and episode guide, it was most definitely a ratings grab for the new show (7th episode of Silver Spoons) and it aired during November sweeps.

The whole thing was so bizarre. :gary:

See? None of it makes any logical sense. I'm guessing in his chauffeured limo? And how would he even KNOW Ricky in the first place?!

The only thing I can conjure up to explain them being friends is their fathers are both rich and could likely done business together and the boys met at some point. It's reaching, but at least it makes sense...doesn't it?

That's a secret spinoff that I never knew about it. I do remember seeing gary coleman and ricky schroder on stage together at the grammys awards when I was a kid

Jami Gertz, the girl who played Boots in season 5, appeared in one episode of DS season 5 as one of Willis' schoolmates.
Also, the guy who portrayed Harrison in season 2, appeared in season 2 of DS as Kimberly's new love interest

So we discover more dopplegangers lurking in sitcom land! :sarah::sarah:

I think we're only scratching the surface here there's a whole bunch more we can dig up.

I remembered one yesterday and it flew out of my head and now I can't remember who the hell it was! :wallbang

There is also Fred, the guy on Who Am I ? (s2). He played one of Willis' friends from Harlem

Felice and Lisa auditioned for that show. Felice also auditioned for the role of Kimberly on Diff'rent Strokes.

I don't think there was a Nancy on Hello, Larry
