I'll likely get razzed for even suggesting this even in theory, but I'll take my lumps...
It was known that Cindy Williams did audition for a part in Charlie's Angels at some point (very likely early in its run appx 1976-77).
Even though the late Penny Marshall was not very glamorous herself barring her some portions of her famous circa 1979 photoshoot, there are certain things that might have worked if Penny was an Angel, if Penny can somehow pull double duty with Laverne & Shirley (or if Laverne & Shirley were cancelled after Season 5)...
Pros with Penny Marshall...
1. Very physically strong (you did see her carry Cindy Williams on her shoulders in the first Christmas-themed L&S or her performance in the first "Battle Of The Network Stars", didn't you?) - would have been a real badass in Charlie's Angels for sure.
2. The jury may be out on this one, but likely would work out better than Shelley Hack.
3. The narrator's opening words would have been “Once upon a time, there were three little girls who went to the police academy. One in Los Angeles, one in San Francisco and one in New York," (Penny originally is from New York) which comes out better and stronger.
Cons with Penny Marshall...
1. Her glamour level isn't particularly high.
2. How team chemistry would work, especially with Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith.
It begs to add a footnote that Charlie's Angels originally was considering Tom Bosley of Happy Days in the role (was that true?) that was eventually filled with David Doyle and named Bosley (apparently as a nod to Tom Bosley?).
This would be quite interesting to hear in the files of "Could This Have Worked?"
