Well it's a quick read at just 200 or so pages and i'm glad I got it for only 5 bucks with shipping. If you're looking for any FOL info, she pretty much glosses over that time and doesn't share much detail on her time with the show. I found that a little odd and surprising.

There's both good and bad here. I still like her, but I honestly think if I ever spent time with this girl, i'd be banging my head against the wall within 30 minutes :wallbangand then run screaming from the room LOL.

This is the price you pay for reading celebrity autobiographies, you either like what you discover about the person, or you get a little disillusioned when you learn things about them that you wish you never read.

For example, I read MTM's book recently and only loved her even MORE after discovering the kind of person she was in real life. Same with Valerie Harper's book. Both reads only made me like them so much more than I do their characters.

With Kim Fields....I still like her....but I like Tootie so much better.

Ok, here's what I thought was GOOD:

I really like her strong Christian faith and how that faith drives her in life. I wish I had that same kind of faith myself. I too believe in God and all that, but never had the strong faith she has and I really admire it.

Speaking of admirable, her Mom seems like a wonderful person who did a fantastic job raising her children. How Kim describes her in the book makes me really like that woman a lot. :)

Kim comes off with such an enthusiastic view on life. I loved reading how excited she was when she first went to college and feeling like wanting to toss her hat in the air like MTM. I love that kind of happiness and excitement for things.
She's had her dark times, what she calls her "Dark Ages" where she seems to have holed up in her bedroom for almost a year, but she came out of it and with that same enthusiasm for life still intact. I love her positivity and enduring optimism and how she feels that everything in life is connected.

Now to the BAD :nonono::nonono::nonono:

She seems to hate hotels lol.

She shares a story of finding out her boyfriend cheated on her when a woman picks up the phone after calling him. Angry and devastated (naturally), she punches a HOLE in the door of the hotel room in a fit of anger. Yikes! I just can't picture her doing that! But she did!

THEN.....years later on her honeymoon she tells how she was feeling romantic and wrote in eyeliner on the side of the hotel tub "Meet me here tonight" for her new husband to see.
Well when new hubby saw that he asked "Will that come off?!" And Kim is all "Way to kill the romantic mood!"....UM, Kim....defacing hotel property is NOT romantic! It's wrong LOL. I would've had the same reaction! But she honestly thought nothing of her bathroom graffiti, and apparently still doesn't in 2017 when she wrote the book! Yikes!

She still thinks it was HIM who was wrong for killing the romantic mood! Geez, a taped note on the tub would have had the same romantic effect Kim. Why write anything on a hotel bathtub in eyeliner?! Would she have done the same thing at home too?!

AND it gets even better!!....Because she then tells how years later her Mom wrote in lipstick on her bathroom mirror "Welcome back to television!" when she got a part and Kim was all like "What a weird and strange thing to do. Who does that?!".....UM, YOU did Kim, with eyeliner on a tub! Remember?!....It's just so bizarre how she chastises her Mom for doing the same thing she did years before!

Man that family just loves writing in bathrooms with makeup.

Moving on now....About "Living Single" (a show I LOVED!)....she harbors some kind of anger or jealousy that "Friends" was the bigger hit and got more attention from the studio (Warner produced both shows) because it was a "white show". I don't agree.
Friends got more attention because it got huge ratings. Had Living Single got the same massive ratings, you can bet the studio would've been marketing it like crazy.
Remember The Cosby Show in the 80's? MASSIVE hit and a black show. It got all the studio's attention and was marketed tremendously. And I didn't see Kim complaining how that show got more attention than FOL. She just comes off a tad hypocritical there.

Speaking of Living Single, it seems there was some kind of falling out between her and the cast. Towards the end she didn't even want to come out of her trailer and onto the set and even requested she leave the show early, but was forced to stay due to her contract.
It seems there's juicy stuff there but she doesn't divulge anything. Tell Kim, TELL!!

There's name dropping all over this book. UGH. She seems to love dropping famous names and it's really a turnoff. I get it. You're a celebrity and naturally you're going to know famous people. It's just the way she drops the names here that comes off like she's seeking some sort of validation from the reader.

I don't care who you know, just like you probably don't care who I know. I read Melissa Gilbert's bio years ago, and she did the same thing and it only made me like her less.
If you're a nobody like me and drop famous names of people you know, that's exciting, but when a celebrity does it, it's just tacky. And Kim drops so many names in this book, I needed a shovel for all those droppings.

She does make mention of her politics and i'll just say we don't share the same views and will leave it at that. We're all free to believe what we wish, and I commend her for her conviction so this is NOT a slam on her views at all. Just that we don't share the same viewpoints and that's OK! :)

Her stint on Real Housewives of Atlanta. I don't do reality and stay FAR away from all that crap. All I know about this "Housewives" show is that a camera follows people around in a house and drama ensues. BORING! I was never drawn to that concept at all. I just don't "get" it.

It seems she had a very negative experience on that show and i'm not surprised. It seems like a highly toxic kind of environment to place yourself into and I would NEVER do something like that no matter how fat the paycheck. And I think that's why she did it anyway.

But she seems to have realized what a toxic environment it was and got out quickly so I commend her for that.

Interestingly, she makes absolutely NO mention of the 2001 FOL reunion movie or her time making it. Another thing I found very odd.

Bottom line, it was a very quick read but I felt lacked the depth i've seen in other biographies and felt it could've been longer and more detailed.

She just glosses over FOL? What a shame. Kim, Lisa, Molly*...what is with these girls not devoting chapters and chapters to the show??

*(though Molly's book wasn't a biography, but a different style altogether)

And yeah, with "Living Single", David Schwimmer got a HUGE backlash from that show on Twitter when he said he'd like to see an Asian or a black version of "Friends". LS was all "Uh, we were the black version of 'Friends', and we were there FIRST." I saw that show some, but never thought of it as "a black 'Friends'."

See, I had a completely different perspective, having read, just prior to that, Molly's GTPB book, which was the Second Worst Book Ever (the Worst Book Ever being a three-way tie for all of Lark Voorhies' books). Molly wrote her book exactly how Blair sounds: pretentious, condescending, and somehow with an attitude assuming every person has a $1,000 gourmet cheese slicer in their summer Paris villa, and that the downstairs butler will know right where it is. OMG!

After that nonsense, Kim's book felt refreshing and honest. And actually mentioned her time on FOL... Molly's did not.

There's both good and bad here. I still like her, but I honestly think if I ever spent time with this girl, i'd be banging my head against the wall within 30 minutes :wallbangand then run screaming from the room LOL.

I strongly believe Kim narrated it via audio, with someone else transcribing it, because it follows Kim's exact speech patterns.

I really like her strong Christian faith and how that faith drives her in life. I wish I had that same kind of faith myself. I too believe in God and all that, but never had the strong faith she has and I really admire it.

I also found myself admiring that, as a non-Christian.

Yeah, I agree with you. Friends was an instant hit; as a measure of how popular Friends was, I was working at Waldenbooks in 1994, when Friends debuted, and the week the calendar went on sale, we were inundated. We sold out of them in hours, and had people asking about them all the rest of the calendar season, but we couldn't even keep them in stock. The same with the Jonathan Taylor Thomas calendar. But if there was a Living Single calendar, it was just not a popular seller. Sure, a popular show, but not a show that millions adored

I definitely prefer the name-dropping in Melissa Gilbert's book to the stilted scripts and lack of any insight in Melissa Sue Anderson's book.

I also loved that Kim talked about her time with Julie Pie and Felice, and that we got info about her time with "The Girls".

Bottom line, it was a very quick read but I felt lacked the depth i've seen in other biographies and felt it could've been longer and more detailed.

I sure appreciate your insights, CFR! Thanks for writing them!

Well, you wouldn't expect Molly's too anyway---not because of her former decades-long silence about FOL, but just because her book an agenda; all about "getting the pretty back". :snob:

I also found myself admiring that, as a non-Christian.

I admire the people in "The Secret", who come from different walks of life.

I honestly don't see me ever wanting to pick up Molly's book. The way you describe it is exactly how I picture her to be.

I got the same feeling while reading the book, and it's actually confirmed in the epilogue. She writes "I'm now driving (wherever she was driving)" and goes on in that manner to share her thoughts. So she's definitely speaking her words out loud, at least in that epilogue. So I do believe she could've done that with the whole book, which is great because I "heard" her voice while reading it lol.

I remember that time and it was like that show just exploded from the get go. But Living Single was a hit in it's own right and I don't believe the two should be compared the way Kim was doing. I felt she was making a racial issue where there was none and it's disappointing she feels that way.

I definitely prefer the name-dropping in Melissa Gilbert's book to the stilted scripts and lack of any insight in Melissa Sue Anderson's book.

After reading Gilbert's book I was going to try Anderson's and the reviews scared me away. Seems I made the right decision. But Melissa Gilbert came off to me as pretentious, insecure and just flat out unlikable. But like I said in Kim's review, you're taking a chance reading these autobiographies and finding out the people beneath the characters. And sometimes, it's better to leave them as their characters than finding out more.

II sure appreciate your insights, CFR! Thanks for writing them!

Thanks so much! Next up, I wanna get a hold of Charlotte Rae's autobiography so i'll share my thoughts on that when i'm done. And I think Lisa Whelchel wrote one too? If so, that's on my list as well.

Yeah, but IIRC, she barely spoke about "Facts" at all in her book. It was mostly like lessons learned throughout her life.

Kim does go overboard with the race issues at time. Such as the FOL reunion show on Good Morning America where she tried to bring it up and the interviewer just blew her off.

If you don't agree with Kim's politics, wait until you see Molly in Season 1 or read Molly Ringwald's social media pages. Molly Parker and Molly Ringwald blend their world together in many ways.

Her race issues surprised me throughout the book. Now granted, i've never walked in her shoes so I can't invalidate her feelings because that's how she feels and all feelings are real. I just think that she's been misguided in regard to that and it's disheartening so know she feels the way she does.

As for Molly---i'm well prepared for what i'm going to see in season 1 and bracing myself for it. I already know she's not going to wind up my favorite FOL character by a long shot lol.

As for Ringwald...there's no way in hell i'd ever venture to look at her social media pages. Smoke would be coming out of my ears for sure!:lol:

About Kim:

When she says that FOL changed the studio at the beginning of season 4, she got her own dressing room and she decorated the walls with posters of Todd Bridges and Michael Jackson. For me an obsession :lol:

Lisa's book is out there. I think she grew as a person since she got her divorce. She not only divorced her husband, but she also divorced her church. She is still a big time born again Christian, but she went to a church with more of a moderate theology.

So it's pretty much outdated info in regard to her views in that book then? Or is there still general stuff like her early life and upbringing? If it's mainly her religious views that's since changed, then I may just give it a pass then.

To me this show represents her: when i think of FOL, BLAIR is the girl who automatically pops into my mind!!!:confused::confused:

:bash::bash::bash:

I know. She IS the FOL and needs to put out a book solely dedicated to the show. I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat!

I honestly don't see me ever wanting to pick up Molly's book. The way you describe it is exactly how I picture her to be.

I was shocked. Completely shocked. Molly is and was about social justice. And yet she wrote this book that is ten times more pretentious than any of the name-dropping Melissa Gilbert does. And the fact is, Melissa did know everyone in Hollywood, so I kinda get it.

Yeah, glad you "got" that, too. I thought maybe I was the only one who noticed.

I remember that time and it was like that show just exploded from the get go. But Living Single was a hit in it's own right and I don't believe the two should be compared the way Kim was doing. I felt she was making a racial issue where there was none and it's disappointing she feels that way.

I suppose she felt like LS was a hit that there should have been more hype. But Friends was just on a different level, with it being #1 for multiple years. Still, I'd prefer her to be overprotective and proud of her show than like Howard Hesseman, who hated Head of the Class, and spent time trashing it in the media for four seasons.

I didn't feel that Melissa Gilbert's book was pretentious, but I did feel she's attention-seeking. Which is basically the one unflattering thing Melissa Sue Anderson's book says about Melissa Gilbert (and otherwise fails to even mention her, despite them working on the same set for eight years). Melissa Gilbert's book, as you know, has nothing nice to say about Melissa Sue Anderson, including mocking her drinking TAB cola. There is no love lost between those girls, and Allison Arngrim (Nellie's) book and John Junior's interviews support Melissa Gilbert's side: they say Melissa Sue was very cold to everyone, and in John Junior's case, got him fired for what he said in the studio classroom.

The Melissa/Melissa feud has been going on for 46 years, according to Allison, who said it began as soon as the first episode. Both Melissas auditioned for the part of Laura, but MG got the part, and MSA had to settle for Mary. A few years ago, there was a Facebook meltdown when Allison incorrectly stated Melissa Sue had moved to Canada (true) and had revoked her American citizenship (false). The social media explosion was heard around the globe!:eek:

Thanks so much! Next up, I wanna get a hold of Charlotte Rae's autobiography so i'll share my thoughts on that when i'm done. And I think Lisa Whelchel wrote one too? If so, that's on my list as well.

Lisa has written a couple or three books: one on parenting (which has been badly reviewed) and one on her relationship with God. Geri actually delivers the most "Facts" facts in her book. I haven't read Charlotte's book yet, but I sure want to!

Oh the candy was around first. Michael Eisner's son's love of the candy gummy bears was the inspiration for "The Gummi Bears" (notice the swap-out of the "y" for the "i").

And never heard of The Wuzzles.

It was only 13 episodes---much like season 1 of FOL!---but this little boy absolutely ADORED it.

ADORED.

It was by far my FAVORITE Saturday morning cartoon for that TV season. It came on early, but I got up for it!! I even got my favorite Wuzzle for Christmas!! (they were plush and each came with a storybook).

Well I hope you're okay with wild experimentation!

The Wuzzles live on a tropical island who-knows-where, the "Isle of Wuz" or the "Land of Wuz", and all the wuzzles are combinations of two animals in one! Even most of their objects and food are two-in-one combos! I was FASCINATED by this as a kid!!

Piggypine: Half pig and half porcupine. She befriends Angela in "Piggypine's Weighty Problem".
Koalakeet: Half koala and half parakeet. He is friends with Colin in "Koalakeet Saves the Day".
Pandeaver: Half panda and half beaver. He is the favorite Wuzzle of Gretchen in "A Hot Tip for Pandeaver".
Woolrus: Half sheep and half walrus. He is friends with Jeanette in "Woolrus' Sleepy Time Pal".
Skowl: Half skunk and half owl. He is the namesake of "Skowl Fixes Things for Croc".

These characters appeared only as plush toys:

Kittypen: Half kitten and half penguin.
Chipadillo: Half chipmunk and half armadillo.
Moofly: Half calf and half dragonfly.
Peepsqueak: Half chick and half mouse.
Puppling: Half puppy and half duckling.

I did but if you look at the Wikipedia page, the ones I pasted were all together and easy to read while the main characters had long drawn out descriptions of who they were and what they liked for breakfast and their whole biographies lol.

Even in it's early days that Friends hype did became TOO much after a while, while LS still remained a hit and was never over-hyped like Friends was. You just accept it and focus on your own show. And since LS was never over hyped, she should appreciate that.

Yes, I totally agree with what you're saying. And Friends did receive this huge hype. Actually, I was avoiding watching it that first season because I was wary of the hype. But sometime after Christmas 1994, after witnessing the calendar frenzy, I began watching, and I'm sure glad I did. I had to see if it lived up to the hype, and, for the most part, it did.

Kim does mention how they pitted both shows against each other at the same night and time, and that's something I don't get if the same studio was behind each show. Why do that?! It really makes no sense to me.

Same studio, but different networks. At the time, the fledgling Fox network was still a runner-up. They wanted to prove they could directly compete with the Big Three television networks. In the end, LS managed to attract between 6.2 and 9.3 million viewers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Single#Episodes), so it was a genuine Fox hit, but Friends was averaging between 20 million and 30 million on NBC during that era.

I must have chosen LS over Friends because I clearly remember tuning into it when it ran.

Interesting! Who was your favorite character?

Who's John Jr? And he was fired because of MSA?!

John Jr was Mr. Edwards' adopted son, who became Mary's steady boyfriend. Melissa Sue Anderson did not like the actor, Radames Pera, and when they were at the studio school together, and he asked her for a pencil, she snapped, "No!". He called her a "bitch", and that was it for his character. John Jr suddenly died in a tragic streetcar accident. Radames Pera doesn't even appear in the episode.

MSA always struck me as an unhappy person. She also has an ice queen quality about her too....it must be those cold ice blue eyes of hers.

It definitely seems like that was the case. Allison, Radames, and MG all say the same thing: she was extremely cold. Melissa Gilbert stated MSA tried to throw her off the wagon in one scene, and it wasn't part of the script!

I'm sure she does, but she strikes me as an extremist with those views, and any extreme with me is an automatic turn off.

There is not too much difference between Molly the character and Molly the actress. Molly's Instagram page is mainly about her family and her family's career (her kids are models), but her Facebook page and Instagram pages (which she doesn't posts on much anymore) was much more Social Justice Molly.

Oh no, I don't think Lisa is the type to go low and trash anyone. That thought hadn't even crossed my mind. I'm picturing a very lighthearted book dedicated to the show filled with little known "Facts" and stories and anecdotes from on and off the set.

I never saw Living Single as a Friends type show either. It had the format of The Facts of Life and The Golden Girls; the core four of female friends. I remember an interview from Kim when she compared Living Single to The Facts of Life about how she was on another show about the friendship between women. I don't think David should have gotten the backlash he did since Living Single is a different type of show than Friends.

And what's interesting is it was her mother who instigated that after appearing in TNGP2.

Mama Molly: "Do you really wanna do this?"
Molly: "Not really."

(direct quotes from the "People" interview video, recounted by Molly)

So we kind of have Mrs. Ringwald to blame for no more Molly Parker! :(

Easy to say when you become a big movie star

No, he's talking about after appearing in TNGP2 ;)

Molly's mom didn't take the name Ringwald, apparently. I don't blame Adele Frembd. She saw Molly struggling with her new role, and wanted to help. She left it up to Molly, but the way she phrased it, she already knew the answer.

I imagine once they came to the decision, Adele brought in a banana cream pie, and they ate a couple of pieces of it.

Joanne Worley was unabashedly Hoppo!.....That woman's voice was like a nail in your head every time she opened her mouth! And when she sang...ahhhhh!! :smash:

Hahaha! She was so entertaining though!

Hoppo was a wannabe performing arts diva in the cartoon---and you may appreciate the fact that the other Wuzzles couldn't stand her loud obnoxious singing!

It's funny how a show that ran so little made such an impact on you!

Oh, it was the sheer imagination of the entire thing: the undisclosed tropical locale, the individualized characters, the ingenuity of having an island where all the inhabitants were combined "two-in-ones" as well as a great deal of the objects and foods on the island---one episode features a "tropical fruit storm" where the storm rains down tropical fruit hybrids! That's brilliant!! :clap

And then getting my favorite Wuzzle for Christmas?!? I can't tell you how many nights I cuddled up with Moosel while reading his storybook! :loveya: (and that damned "Billy"! )

I wonder why it didn't catch on in popularity??

Well, one theory says Disney pitted this against "Gummi Bears" on different networks, and GB got more ratings. Another theory says after one of the voice actors passed away, it was then canceled. I just know I loved every millisecond it was on my TV screen!! :loveya:

They seem like nice characters.

They are, and they have some FOL characteristics! Hoppo is a wannabe stage diva like Tootie, lol, Rhinkoey is the jokester like Natalie, and Bumblelion is a never-rending train engine of energy like Sue Ann while being a champ athlete like Cindy!

Does it have a cult following that keeps it popular?

It does! It's never been released on DVD, but I have a "blackmarket" DVD thanks to Disney re-rerunning the series in the '90s or early '00s on Toon Disney, thank goodness!!

Are you on Instagram? There's a guy there whose account is "thewuzzeum", and he must have the BIGGEST Wuzzles collection in the entire universe!! He scours eBay and anywhere else he can, and he has a big "source" in the United Kingdom who is a big supplier for UK merchandise to him! I would love to see him on Lisa's "Collector's Call" show, but while he must have the BIGGEST "Wuzzles" collection there is, it's not, like, 18,000 or more items like CC features! lol.

"thewuzzeum" is a FANTASTIC account, and he includes little stories of how he got certain items and such, and his own history with the cartoon and what sparked his adult re-interest in the show.

Oh! And last week he got a box of over 350 Wuzzles art pieces! AMAZING!!! He'll be sharing in his posts what he got in there!!

The you tube snippet I saw has comments disabled so I couldn't see what people were saying about it. :(

Here's the awesome jazy theme song intro in case you haven't seen it! (don't worry, the guy who sings it is a lot more pleasant singing to listen to than Hoppo is!)

(there are 617 comments on this video!!! WOW!! :loveya:)

Here's Wiki info on Stephen Geyer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Geyer), who wrote and sang the theme song. He had a musical career in Hollywood, including writing 5 songs for the 1982 film "Zapped!" which co-starred one of our "Facts" girls, Felice! #relatingEVERYTHINGto"Facts"

 You know I'd read that, too! Except maybe if it was:

"Here's my advice on how to feel vibrant again after getting canned from a sitcom. Go into the fanciest Parisian cheese and wine shop, order some brie and an expensive vintage, then have your housekeeper get some foie gras and escargot and hold a dinner party on the Champs Elysees..."

I had planned to, but then after Charlotte passed on, the wound felt too fresh.

Ooohhhh...:lookaroun

I'm surprised you weren't like me though. As soon as I learned about it, I was STOKED. As soon as it was released, I ran out and snatched it up!! :D

I kept hoping it would get better!

...No, I think I gave up partway through. I don't even remember now. But if I ever get fabulously wealthy, I know what book to consult to discover which fork to use when consuming my Camembert on the Riviera!

I think part of the problem with Lisa writing a FOL book is that Lisa already titled one of her books The Facts of Life and Other Lessons My Father Taught Me.

Yeah, dang you, Lisa!

I guess she thought it would be cute to use the show's title for part of her title, but it was very misleading and a big shame. Maybe she'll write a book all about the show and title it "Growing Up Blair: My life at Eastland" or something like that.

Her daughter obviously was not happy with her new role.

Oh no, I don't think Lisa is the type to go low and trash anyone. That thought hadn't even crossed my mind. I'm picturing a very lighthearted book dedicated to the show filled with little known "Facts" and stories and anecdotes from on and off the set.

I'd personally love it if she made it in a scrapbook type form with lots of pictures over a regular novel type book just filled with worded pages. The more fun and lighthearted the better it would be! :)

Lisa are you reading this?!:wave:

I love the idea, and i would buy LISA's book on a heartbeat! (I bet she'd have lots to say about the BLAIR character she played so well)

Are you reading us LISA?:wave::wave::wave:

I think her point was that Friends got more attention because it got promoted a lot more than Living Single and that helped it get better ratings.

Also, her point is that Friends was a rip off of Living Single. The Cosby Show is not a rip off of The Facts of Life. The Cosby Show was about a family. The Facts of Life was about a boarding school. Totally different show and not a similar at all. However, Friends is similar to Living Single. That's her point. Why would she care about the Cosby Show? It is not similar to her show.

I remember that time and it was like that show just exploded from the get go. But Living Single was a hit in it's own right and I don't believe the two should be compared the way Kim was doing. I felt she was making a racial issue where there was none and it's disappointing she feels that way.

But some people do feel that Friends is similar to Living Single. Both shows are about single male and female friends. And if Kim feels that it was a race issue, why is that disappointing? Maybe you don't feel that way, but she is in the business and has more of an insider scoop. We don't know what she has heard or seen and especially being a black woman. Women call out sexism. I don't see that as disappointing. It's disappointing that sexism and racism exists. I would never be disappointed in people for standing up against unfairness.

Kim does go overboard with the race issues at time.

Maybe because she's experienced a lot of racism.

Her race issues surprised me throughout the book. Now granted, i've never walked in her shoes so I can't invalidate her feelings because that's how she feels and all feelings are real. I just think that she's been misguided in regard to that and it's disheartening so know she feels the way she does.

But how can she be misguided about racism. Racism exists. If anything it's disheartening that people have to go through racism. What's wrong with speaking out against something that's unfair and evil like racism? Should people not speak out about sexism, racism, child abuse etc?

I agree, it’s important for her to speak out or it will just continue to happen. We still have a long way to go as a society.

I didn't read Kim Fields book but did she mention that Nancy Mckeon taught her to shave her legs and Nancy and Kim were together when Nancy got her driver's licence?
