View Full Version : Eastlake/Eastland references on DS
'80sSitcoms 04-19-2020, 04:25 PM I've started binging my 2 seasons of DS I've got on DVD.
In episode 1, Mr. Drummond says Kimberly is at boarding school, but she stays at home on the weekends (we'll see how long this remains consistent).
In episode 3, Kimberly's snobby grandmother gives Kimberly a new dress when she visits, and when Kimberly tries it on she comes downstairs thrilled with it, twirling around, and says, "This dress is the end! It's gonna make all my girlfriends just hate me! :cheer:"
It's funny thinking of her going back to "Eastlake" and Nancy, Sue Ann, Jennifer, Molly, and Tootie "just hating her" over that new dress.
Blair would probably act like it was no big deal. :snob: lol
'80sSitcoms 04-19-2020, 05:07 PM And while not Eastlake/Eastland, I just found this interesting: In episode 5, Kimberly says "Poor Arnold. He must be lost in a crowd. There's 8 million people in New York."
Now, it's not clear if she means New York the city, or the state, but I think she's referencing the whole state. I Googled, and in 2020 there's 8.399 million in NYC. But in the state, in 2020 there are over 19 million.

I thinks she met New York City.
It was also never explained why Kimberly went from Eastlake/Eastland to a public school .
'80sSitcoms 04-19-2020, 06:28 PM I thinks she met New York City.
But if there are just now 8 million people in NY, I'd think over 40 years ago it would be noticeably less.
'80sSitcoms 04-19-2020, 06:29 PM In episode 6, Kimberly's school is having a charity sale.
TV Guy 04-19-2020, 06:45 PM I thinks she met New York City.

There was an episode of “Diff’rent Strokes” called “In the Swim”, where Kimberly decided to go to public school and transferred to Willis’ school. By that time, the crossovers had ended.
'80sSitcoms 04-19-2020, 08:44 PM ^---ah, good note
In episode 12 Mr. Drummond brings home a deceptively cold mother as a date, who shipped her kids off to boarding schools overseas. Kimberly tells her, "I'm at boarding school now, but I speak to Daddy every day and I see him as often as I like. :)"
(it's so much fun thinking of Eastlake/Eastland and "our girls" when these school references pop up!)
RetroGuy2000 04-19-2020, 10:21 PM But if there are just now 8 million people in NY, I'd think over 40 years ago it would be noticeably less.
No, in 1970, there were 7.89 million people in NYC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City#Demographics). There was a mass exodus of people from New York City into the suburbs, starting in the late 1970s, in part due to crime and gangs. NYC didn't cross the 8 million threshold until about 2000.
'80sSitcoms 04-20-2020, 02:20 AM NYC didn't cross the 8 million threshold until about 2000.
Well, you need to go back in time 42 years and tell the writer that!
RetroGuy2000 04-20-2020, 02:52 AM Well, you need to go back in time 42 years and tell the writer that!
Nah, 'cause Kimberly is not going to say "7.89 million people", even if it's true. 8 million is close enough.
I dunno; New York City has always carefully maintained its reputation as an endlessly growing city. And yet, looking back at those numbers, the city obviously stagnated population-wise for decades.

I guess there's only so many apartments!
'80sSitcoms 04-20-2020, 01:26 PM In episode 14 Kimberly is "away at boarding school".
In episode 15 it's "report card day" and Kimberly gladly shows her father her report card, while Willis tries to hide his (makes you wonder if it's a coincidence a private school and a public school give out report cards on the same day).
In episode 18 Kimberly is going to "a slumber party" (of course, we like to imagine who with!).

Was the Slumber Party episode with the FOL girls or was it another slumber party?
'80sSitcoms 04-20-2020, 01:44 PM Was the Slumber Party episode with the FOL girls or was it another slumber party?
Oh no, THE slumber party is in season 2. She was just going to a slumber party in episode 18. She thought the phone call in the beginning was about it (it was for someone else), and then later she mentioned going to the slumber party, and then near the end she came back.
Also, in episode 20, Kimberly shows off wearing a skimpy bikini for a family trip. Knowing what know now, you can't help but wonder if before and after the scene she was prancing around the grown men of the crew in that bikini and jumping up on their laps for more of their attention.

Guess she was going with Nancy, Sue Ann, Tootie, Molly, and Jennifer!
'80sSitcoms 04-22-2020, 02:06 PM ^---and maybe Laura and Leon!
'80sSitcoms 04-22-2020, 02:07 PM In episode 33 (season 2, episode 9) Kimberly says she's going to dinner with a girlfriend. I like to picture "the girlfriend" being Nancy. :)
'80sSitcoms 04-22-2020, 02:21 PM In episode 39 (season 2, episode 14) Kimberly says, "Oh Daddy, can you drop me off at the library? I'm meeting my friend there."
Again, I like to think of her "friend" as Nancy. :)
80s Dude 04-22-2020, 02:22 PM Maybe Kimberly was meeting her friend Leon.
'80sSitcoms 04-22-2020, 02:30 PM In the same episode she later says, "Hey guys, my girlfriend's going to the movies with us tonight."
Then later she says to the boys, "Well, let's get going, guys. My girlfriend's meeting us downstairs."
An Eastland girl on her way to the building!
I just always picture her "friend/girlfriend" as Nancy! :)
RetroGuy2000 04-22-2020, 02:39 PM Really? You want all the unnamed references to Kimberly's girlfriend to be Nancy? We couldn't have 2-09 friend be Nancy, and 2-14 friend be Molly?

Well, it's just that Nancy seems most compatible with Kimberly to me one-on-one. She's so "level-headed" that she would enjoy "All-American" things like going to the movies and going to the library.

But it was Molly, Tootie, Cindy, and Natalie who went to Kimberly's slumber party, which started out as Molly's slumber party. Nancy didn't even attend. Molly's family clearly lives in the city. Nancy isn't "All-American" enough for slumber parties, as we saw, or going to the library.

Yeah, but Kimberly just seems a little old for them IMO.
80s Dude 04-22-2020, 05:03 PM Yeah, but Kimberly just seems a little old for them IMO.
They were just more All American girls than Nancy. Nancy was not All American enough for Kimberly.
'80sSitcoms 04-22-2020, 05:08 PM ^---That is definitely true!!*
*(say the DS producers)
Lorimar Television 04-22-2020, 05:36 PM ^---That is definitely true!!*

 Sorry Nancy, maybe if you dye your hair.

Well, it certainly wouldn't be BLAIR (although she's definitely ALL AMERI CAN!) since they didn't seem to get along at all on the pilot episode.
What about SUE ANN? She certainly is ALL AMERI CAN!:lol::lol:

80s Dude 04-22-2020, 09:31 PM Dana Plato does look more like Conrad Bain's daughter since they both had blonde hair.
Lorimar Television 04-22-2020, 11:19 PM Dana Plato does look more like Conrad Bain's daughter since they both had blonde hair.
His hair was white
'80sSitcoms 04-22-2020, 11:56 PM It was not white! It was blond!
Lorimar Television 04-23-2020, 02:22 AM It was not white! It was blond!
Blond? Really? It doesn't look blond to me
'80sSitcoms 04-23-2020, 02:25 AM Hmmm, well, I always thought of it as very light blond but not "white". But it looks kinda "shiny gray".
I wonder what they technically considered it? I did always find it a very light blond tone on the show, but never, like, "Mr. Crocker white", lol.
Lorimar Television 04-23-2020, 02:32 AM Haha i always saw him as old and gray
80s Dude 04-23-2020, 09:07 AM Conrad Bain certainly was blonde on Maude.
