Episode Two: Hold Up, Jennifer

[Scene: The Kitchen. The family is getting ready for breakfast]
Mallory: Jennifer… I never did tell you, that you can ask me whatever you want about high school, right?
Jennifer: No, you haven’t. But that’s okay, it’s going along fine.
Mallory: Are you sure?
Jennifer: Yes. Actually… it’s going along really good. Well, lately.
Mallory: Oh? And why is that? Wait… is it a cute guy?!
Jennifer: Yes! For once you’re right!
Mallory: This is so exciting!
Elyse: And his name is…?
Jennifer: Brad.
Mallory: That’s the cutest name!!
Jennifer: Mallory, calm down. He’s MY boyfriend, not yours.
Steven: Boyfriend? (Steven walks over and sits down by Jennifer)
Jennifer: Yes… boyfriend.
Elyse: When were you going to tell us?
Jennifer: After school…
Mallory: But she can tell me whenever! Whenever, whenever, whenever!!
Steven: (whispering to Elyse) What is wrong with Mallory?
Mallory: Hey, I heard that! Anyways… when can we see him Jen?
Jennifer: After school… Oh yeah, did I mention he’s going to be taking me to school now?
(Jennifer gets up and walks by the door)
Steven: Hold it!
Elyse: He’s driving you to school, and you tell us five minutes before he’s going to?!
Jennifer: It slipped my mind, I was talking to Brad all last night.
Mallory: Yeah, I was on the phone less than her! Aren’t you proud?
Steven: (sarcastically) Oh yes, Mallory!
Jennifer: Oh, he’s here, I have to get going. I’ll see you guys after school!
Elyse: Jennifer wait your back pack is…
(Jennifer walks out, and a packet of papers falls out of her back pack)
Elyse: …open.
Steven: Well… aren’t you going to pick it up?
(Elyse walks over and picks it up)
Mallory: What is it, mom?
Elyse: It’s… someone else’s homework…

[Scene: The Living Room. Elyse is sitting on the sofa reading, when the door opens…]
Jennifer: Hey, mom.
Elyse: Hi Jennifer… can you come over here?
Jennifer: (nervously) Umm, sure.
Elyse: Sit down, and let’s rap.
Jennifer: Rap what?
Elyse: Rap… chat… I keep forgetting there’s a difference.
Jennifer: Ohhh, rap! I remember.
Elyse: Okay, anyways, whose paper is this? (Elyse holds up the packet)
Jennifer: It’s… not mine.
Elyse: I noticed. How did you get it?
Jennifer: Well… I paid for it.
Elyse: You… paid for this?
Jennifer: Yes.
Elyse: And why did you do that?
Jennifer: Don’t you want to know how much I paid?
Elyse: I don’t care what you paid, I want to know WHY you did this. It’s not like you, Jen!
Jennifer: It’s not like me? Not like… me? So I can’t change?!
Elyse: I’m not saying that, but you are an intelligent girl, why would you do this?
Jennifer: Maybe I’m under stress, or maybe I’m getting lazy!
Elyse: Or… maybe you are spending too much time with your new boyfriend?
Jennifer: No, that’s not it.
Elyse: I think it is, Jen.
Jennifer: Okay, so now I’ll do my homework… my OWN homework…
(Jennifer gets up and tries to walk away)
Elyse: Wait a second! We’re not done here!
Jennifer: (turns around) What is there left to talk… oh wait, I mean… “rap” about?
Elyse: Sit down, Jennifer.
Jennifer: (sarcastically) Ohhh, now you are calling me my full name. Must be serious.
Elyse: Sit down, NOW.
(Jennifer sits down)
Elyse: You are not to talk on the phone for a week, and I won’t be letting you go anywhere for a couple of days, except to school.
Jennifer: What? How is that fair?
Elyse: And since when is cheating fair?
Jennifer: That’s different though!
Elyse: No Jennifer, it’s NOT different. The punishment stands. Now go to your room, and please do your homework.
(Jennifer goes up to her room to do her homework)

[Scene: Jennifer’s Room. Jen is talking on the phone with Brad.]
Jennifer: (on phone) So, what are you doing tonight?
Brad: I don’t know. Probably nothing, unless you are coming.
Jennifer: Well, I could sneak out or something.
Brad: When will you be able to go places again?
Jennifer: A week I think… I’m not even supposed be on the phone.
Mallory: (after picking up the phone from downstairs) Hello?
Jennifer: Mallory?!
Mallory: Yes, Jennifer?
Jennifer: Get off the phone!
Mallory: I can listen in if I want. Besides, if you don’t let me, I COULD tell mom you were on the phone…
Jennifer: Mallory!
Mallory: Yes, Jennifer?
Jennifer: Mallory!!!
Mallory: Yes, Jennifer?
Jennifer: First, quit doing that! Second, get off the phone!
Mallory: I have to use the phone though!
Jennifer: Fine, I’ll get off. Just don’t tell mom!
(Elyse opens the door)
Elyse: Don’t tell mom what?
(Jennifer hangs up the phone)
Jennifer: You were eavesdropping!
Elyse: And, you were on the phone.
Jennifer: Yeah, so?
Elyse: You disobeyed what I just told you earlier! Jen, why are you doing this?
Jennifer: Because he makes me feel like I’m actually important.
Elyse: And we don’t?
Jennifer: Nope. Alex was, but I’m not.
Elyse: Jennifer, everyone is important in different ways. You will make your mark on the world, you just have to wait until the time is right. Don’t give up everything you have now just for a guy, no matter how special he may be.
Jennifer: I guess you are right. Well… you are ALWAYS right.
Elyse: Well, I try my best.
Jennifer: Thanks mom!
(Elyse and Jennifer hug)

Episode 183 – “Let’s Go Our Separate Ways” (Part I)

[Scene: Mallory’s Room. She is on the phone with Alex]
Mallory: So what do you think I should do?
Alex: I don’t know Mallory, I never did like him.
Mallory: What do you mean you NEVER liked him?
Alex: I never liked him! He… is… even stupider than YOU!
Mallory: Hey!! That wasn’t very nice!
Alex: I know. Maybe that was calling him a little TOO stupid.
Mallory: Alex!!
Alex: Okay, I’m kidding, you aren’t stupid.
Mallory: Thank you!
Alex: You’re welcome, I guess.
Mallory: Now what should I do?
Alex: Just go with your emotions.
Mallory: And how would YOU know what that is?
Alex: I’m not emotion-less!
Mallory: Oh right, Mr. “I’m On Top”!
Alex: Fine then, ask Jennifer or Andy what to do.
Mallory: I probably should. I’m sure Andy would have a better answer than you!
(Jennifer walks in Mallory’s room)
Jennifer: Who are you talking to? I heard you talking really loudly from the hall.
Mallory: Jennifer, it’s Alex. Hold on a second.
Jennifer: You called ALEX?! Are you crazy? Insane? I can’t believe this!
Mallory: (back on the phone) Okay Alex, well I better get going.
Alex: Well, tell Jennifer and the rest hi for me.
Mallory: Okay, I’ll do that.
Alex: And one more thing…
Mallory: What’s that?
Alex: Don’t call me again at work!!
Mallory: Oh yeah, I forgot. But it was an emergency!
Alex: Teenage issues… emergencies? I don’t think so!
Mallory: Yeah yeah yeah… bye Alex.
Jennifer: What did he want?
Mallory: I called him, he didn’t call me.
Jennifer: Something MUST be up if you called him!
Mallory: Actually, something is…
Jennifer: What is it Mallory?
Mallory: I’m… thinking I might… break up with Nick.
Jennifer: Really?! That’s great!
(Mallory gives a sad look)
Jennifer: I mean… that’s horrible! Such a dilemma!
Mallory: I still haven’t decided yet.

[Scene: The Basement. Mallory is sitting down thinking, when Andy walks down]
Andy: Mallory?
Mallory: Yeah, it's me.
Andy: What's wrong? You seem down.
Mallory: Oh, I was just thinking.
Andy: About what?
Mallory: Nick... And what are you doing down here?
Andy: I'm supposed get something for Jennifer. Are you gonna be okay?
Mallory: Well, I don't know. Do you think I should break up with Nick?
Andy: Why would you ask me? I'm only in third grade!
Mallory: Yeah, but at least you act more mature than Alex.
Andy: Is there any other way I can help?
Mallory: Not really... I just need to think... a lot.
(Jennifer walks down, yelling at Andy)
Jennifer: Andy?! Where is it?! Where are you?
Andy: Over here Jennifer!
Jennifer: Oh hi Mallory. Sitting down here being depressed again?
Mallory: I'm not depressed, Jennifer!
Jennifer: (sarcastically) Oh sure, I believe you!
Andy: Why don't you just talk to mom and dad?
Mallory: Thank you Andy, I think I will.
Andy: (yelling at Mallory as she goes up the stairs) If you need anymore expert advice, I'm always here for you!

[Scene: The Living Room. Elyse & Steven are sitting on the sofa, and Mallory comes down and joins them]
Mallory: Mom, Dad, how do you know if you’ve found the right person for you?
Steven: First… why do you ask?
Mallory: Well… I might break it off with Nick.
Steven: (very interested) Really?!
Elyse: Steven, don’t be so cold-hearted! Why honey?
Mallory: I don’t think he’s the right guy for me.
Steven: Honey, we knew that all along…
(Mallory glares at Steven)
Elyse: Well, we think you are doing the right thing…
Mallory: But I haven’t done anything yet! Why does everyone WANT me to break up with Nick? I thought everyone started to accept him!
Elyse: But Mallory, us even having this conversation must give you a clue.
Mallory: A clue about what?
Steven: Elyse, she’s never had a clue.
(Elyse & Steven chuckle)
Mallory: Well, it appears to me I’m not getting any help here.
Elyse: Mallory… it’s your choice, not ours. Do what you think, do what you feel.
Mallory: Okay, I will.
Steven: So what have you decided?
Mallory: You’ll find out later.

[Scene: Nick’s Apartment. Mallory is ringing the doorbell]
(Nick opens the door, after a long delay)
Nick: Oh… it’s you. Hey!!
Mallory: Hey, Nick.
Nick: What’s new?
Mallory: A lot… can I sit down?
Nick: Sure, you can sit on the sofa.
Mallory: Thanks. But… we need to talk.
Nick: Okay, let’s talk.
Mallory: Okay.
[There is an awkward silence]
Nick: So…
Mallory: So…
Nick: Anything you wanted to say?
Mallory: Actually, there is.
Nick: Okay! Go ahead and say it!
Mallory: Nick, I think we should break up.
Nick: Break up?
Mallory: Break up.
Nick: But, we were doing so well together, Mal…
Mallory: You think so?
Nick: Yeah, you are the only girl for me!
Mallory: Why do you say that?
Nick: You are funny… bright… beautiful… everything I wanted in a girl, but have never had before.
Mallory: Really?
Nick: Really.
Mallory: That’s so sweet of you to say, Nick. But I don’t believe a word of it.
Nick: What are you saying?
Mallory: You don’t sound too sincere.
Nick: Mal, it’s all for real!
Mallory: Why exactly did it take you do long to open the door? Around three minutes, if I counted right.
Nick: Why are you doing this Mallory?
Mallory: Just answer the question.
Nick: (hesitant) I… was sleeping.
Mallory: Nick, it is Eight O’clock.
Nick: So a guy can’t take a nap? I have nothing else to do.
Mallory: That’s exactly it, Nick. You don’t do ANYTHING! Anyways… can I use the restroom before I go?
Nick: Uhh… no. It’s… broken!
(Mallory walks over, and tried to open the door, but it’s locked.)
Mallory: Why is it locked? Who is in here?!
Nick: No one, Mal…
Mallory: Whoever is in here BETTER open the door!!
(The door opens, and a girl walks out)
Mallory: So… this is why it took so long! I… I…
(Mallory runs out of the apartment, but when she opens the door, Skippy is standing there)
Mallory: Skippy…??

Episode 184 – “Let’s Go Our Separate Ways” (Part II)

[Scene: Nick’s Apartment. Mallory has just found Skippy standing outside of the door, when she was trying to run out of the apartment.]
Mallory: Skippy, what are you doing here?
Skippy: Alex told me you were breaking up with Nick.
Mallory: He did?
Skippy: Yes.
Mallory: Well… I did break up with him.
Skippy: Why were you running out though?
Mallory: I found a girl in Nick’s bathroom.
[Nick runs out into the hallway]
Nick: Mallory, I can explain!
Mallory: Nick, I really don’t need or want your explanation.
Nick: What does that mean?
Mallory: It means you’re dumped. Skippy, take me home.
Skippy: Are you sure? Didn’t you drive here yourself?
(Mallory grabs Skippy and starts kissing him)
Nick: Mal, what are you doing?
Mallory: Kissing the person that’s always been there for me, no matter what.
Nick: You aren’t serious, right?
Mallory: No Nick, I’m very serious.
Nick: Well, call me when you get back to normal.
Mallory: Nick, I won’t be calling you again. I won’t be SPEAKING to you again.

[Scene: The Living Room. Mallory & Skippy are talking]
Mallory: I’m so glad I broke up with him!
Skippy: I’m glad too.
Mallory: Why?
Skippy: He wasn’t right for you.
Mallory: Think so?
Skippy: I’m positive.
Mallory: Skippy… why do you like me so much? And for all these years?
Skippy: You are so sweet… and pretty… and intelligent… well, compared to me at least.
[Mallory laughs, and Jennifer walks in the room]
Jennifer: Skippy, what are you doing here?
Skippy: I brought Mallory home.
Jennifer: She couldn’t come home by herself?
Mallory: It was so romantic Jen, Nick and me broke up, and Skippy was there to pick up the pieces.
Jennifer: (sarcastically) Gag me!
Mallory: Jennifer, may we have a moment alone?
Jennifer: I don’t know, what were you planning on doing?
Mallory: Jennifer!
Jennifer: Alright, I’ll leave.
[Jennifer leaves the room]
Skippy: So what is Alex doing?
Mallory: I don’t know, some pompous job.
Skippy: Oh… I see.
Mallory: Yeah, I’m glad to see him out of the house.
[Andy walks in the room.]
Andy: Hi Mallory!
Mallory: Andy, hello. But, can you PLEASE leave us alone?
Andy: That’s not very nice Mallory!
Mallory: Andy, I’m sorry, but everyone is driving my crazy!
Andy: Well I’m sorry you are just that bad of a sister!!
[Andy storms out of the room]
Mallory: Andy, wait!!
Skippy: Don’t mind them, let’s get back to us.
Mallory: Yeah, so anyways…
[Steven & Elyse come walking through]
Elyse: Oh hello Skippy! When did you get here?
Skippy: Mal, I think I better go.
Mallory: Okay, I’ll call you!
Skippy: Goodbye Mr. And Mrs. Keaton.
Steven: Bye Skip!
[Skippy leaves the house]
Elyse: Was it something I said?

[Scene: Mallory’s Room. She is talking on the phone with Alex.]
Mallory: So Alex, why did you call?
Alex: I heard… that… that… you, and… and… Skippy… you… guys… KISSED!
Mallory: Yeah, that’s right.
Alex: Are you serious?!
Mallory: Yes! I’m serious!
Alex: No joke?
Mallory: No joke.
Alex: I knew it would happen sooner or later…
Mallory: Oh you did not.
Alex: How are mom and dad?
Mallory: Fine, I guess.
Alex: Well, haven’t you talked to them lately?
Mallory: Not really.
Alex: What about Jen?
Mallory: She seems happier.
Alex: Happier?
Mallory: Yes, mainly because you are gone.
Alex: Well thank you all for loving me so much!
Mallory: You know we love you deep down inside.
Alex: Aww, thanks!
Mallory: Deep… deep… deep… deep… DEEP down inside!
Alex: Mal, I think I’m gonna go now… bye!
Mallory: Oh Alex, you know I was joking! Bye!

[Scene: The Kitchen. Elyse & Steven are talking]
Steven: Mallory and Skippy… together. Did you ever imagine that?
Elyse: I knew it might happen.
Steven: Oh, you did not!
Elyse: Well, everything’s possible!
Steven: Hey, have you talked to Alex at all lately?
Elyse: Not really…
Steven: I haven’t either. I wonder how he’s doing.
Elyse: Making big money I suppose.
Steven: It would be nice if he gave us some.
Elyse: Don’t hold your breath!
Steven: Well, it would be nice!
Elyse: Where did the time go with him?
Steven: (sarcastically) To a little place called the past.
Elyse: Seriously, Steven. Don’t you think we need to spend more time with the kids we have here now?
[Jennifer and Andy come into the kitchen yelling at each other]
Jennifer: STOP IT ANDY!
Andy: BUT I HAD IT!
Elyse: Well… maybe not.
[Steven and Elyse laugh]
