Wawwie 04-10-2020, 04:20 PM I don't think that word is funny in any context or no matter who says it. You're just saying it's funny because George said it and because George is black.

No, that's simply a hilarious clip! Richard Pryor and many other black comedians used that word back then.

So according to you it's acceptable if a black person says it but not acceptable if a white person says it. Or maybe you think it's an acceptable word no matter who says it.:rolleyes:
Schmoopie 04-11-2020, 01:37 PM Wow, I don't find that funny either. I only watched it out of curiosity. I'm sorry I did now. I don't think it's acceptable at all and I know back then it was considered funny.
I was listening/watching Allison Argrim from Little House on the Prairie the other day on her Facebook page. She's been reading the Little House on the Prairie Books and she came across that word and refused to read it. She wouldn't say what the word was but I'm pretty sure that was it. I hate coming across that word in books as well, like the pre-quel to "To Kill a Mokcingbird. It's in there a lot.

Yeah, I cringe when watching civil rights movies that are supposed to take place in the South in the early 60's, they use that word a lot ! :( I know they have to to make it more authentic but it must be hard on the white actors (who are playing the racist rednecks )having to say it, you know they really don't want to but it's in the script , and the black actors who are being called that in the movie, that must be really hard !! :(

It's funnier if you see it in the context of the entire episode. One of George's stores burns down to the GROUND and they initially think Lionel's faulty wiring was the cause. When Lionel slams the door and storms out in the video clip he's mad at his dad because he doesn't believe he's innocent! The writers put that line in because they knew it was funny and would get laughs!
I know you're a liberal so I'll tell you what fellow liberal Chris Rock said. He said it's OK for blacks to use that word with their own people as we see with George & Lionel.

Sorry, my bad, I didn't realize that Chris Rock is the spokesman for all black people.
FYI, that word is never "funny" or acceptable in any context or said by anyone.

I personally am grateful that society as a whole has evolved since those days.
For all too long we had a dual standard in this country that prescribed that racial bias by a minority was permissable, while racial bias from a white was not.
Clearly if something is wrong then it is ALWAYS wrong, and any claims that (example) "400 years of prior suffering" somehow excuses their biased behavior, is dreadfully misguided.
You can't have it both ways.

Kind falls into that same category of a woman ok with a woman using the term B*tch but not a man. When a man uses it the word comes off a little differently because its normally used to insult a woman. So thats the case with the N word. When white people use it the word will never sound the same because in the past it was used to hurt blacks and be mean
So I get confused too when I hear two women talking and hear the B word in a joking way over and over as they refer to each other and said to myself.."damm when I used that word I get chewed out" So that's why white people get confused because they think the word is no big deal since blacks use it all the time but when someone white uses it not the same
Same way with friends insulting each other but if an outsider tries to do the same the first reaction is.........."Hold up? what did you say?
So that's why whites shouldnt use it because of how it was used by whites in the past
TVFactFan 04-11-2020, 03:49 PM This clip is accurate because black parents who call their kids that word when they are mad at them about something. My mom has only used that word toward me when I made her upset
But on a regular day she just calls me by name:lol:
TVFactFan 04-11-2020, 03:51 PM Even the one time Louise uses the N word it was because she was upset at george for spending so much money on a watch. Now that I think about it everytime the word was used on the show it was behind anger and I agree that it's no need to have had the word used in the first place

You're absolutely right. They were using that N word in anger and to be insulting.

Which means its a unpleasant word and no need to put it in the script. The word has no pleasantness attached to it at all. Even when my friends used it on me it was because they were setting me up for a insult:lol:

Just like when Steve Harvey tries to be the spokesman for all men and I be like.........."you dont speak for me"
lol
Wawwie 04-11-2020, 04:10 PM I know you're a liberal
So you think only liberals are offended by the N word. Interesting.

It wasnt something I mentioned to my friends growing up but yes I was a fan of the show.
GentlemanJim 04-12-2020, 03:37 PM So I get confused too when I hear two women talking and hear the B word in a joking way over and over as they refer to each other
So you are saying that when women use this word it is intended as a congratulatory sobriquet celebrating the virtues of being hard to get along with?
But a man cannot have similar satirical intent?
Perhaps this is sometimes more along the lines of the determination of the recipient of such commentary to insist they have been offended? A charade of convenience in other words.

the word B*tch is only used by a man when he is upset. That is not the case when women use it toward each other.

That is not entirely true about men. A lot of gay men use the b word with their male friends.

ok well me has a straight male has no reason to use it in daily conversation. When I used it in the past I was trying to upset a certain women:lol:

Honky 05-10-2020, 01:44 AM Except for the famous ******-Honky scene in Season 2 in "The Break-up, Pt I," where George calls Tom Willis a "honky" and Tom calls George "******;" and in the Season 7 episode "Sorry, Wrong Meeting," where George comes face-to-face with the KKK, George's use of the N-word was an ad-lib by Sherman (not in the script). Sherman felt it was appropriate for the character and ad-libbed during audience performance.
In the KKK story, the writers, both white & black, labored over whether to use the N-word; but figured that Klansmen would use that word, and decided not to soft-pedal the story, but to play it real. (p. 365, HONKY IN THE HOUSE, Writing & Producing The Jeffersons. https://amzn.to/2L1bD7K

EXACTLY! I heard Sherman would NOT have used that word unless he felt it was appropriate and part of the COMEDY of the show so thanks for proving all the HATERS in this thread WRONG!
A study came out recently that 80% of Americans say America has gotten TOO politically correct! A percent that high means majorities of most ALL groups feel America has gotten too politically correct.
TVFactFan 05-11-2020, 02:10 AM That KKK episode was more suited for season 1 or 2 since by season 8 and 9 they were already living for a while
Honky 05-11-2020, 02:29 AM In The Jeffersons episode titled "George's Best Friend," George's old Navy buddy Wendall (played by actor Lou Gosset Jr.) is hitting on Louise. When George finds out, he confronts Wendall, ad-libbing the N-word with: "******, you got to be crazy! I know you done back-doored a lotta people, but I never thought you'd be stupid enough to back-door me! You better get outta my house before I erase your future!" p. 122, HONKY IN THE HOUSE, Writing & Producing The Jeffersons. https://amzn.to/2L1bD7K

Hopefully. To contrast, "Good Times" also did the faddish thing and have James use the N-word. His first use was powerful. The next season the script had him do it again and even I could tell that John Amos wasn't wanting to do the scene.

Where are they at? I've heard the other b-word word "boy" ("boi") used, even the "other f-word", but not the pejorative generally attributed to women. Maybe on television and used for sardonic purposes, but not as much in real life. (I've heard some people use it in nightclubs and bars, but it's more a subcultural tendency than a cultural one. )

James last time using the N word was inside a bar in season 3
