First there was Leon the frog in DS season 1's "The Girls' School", and then Leon the human in season 2's "Mrs. Garrett's Romance".

So, which do you prefer? 🧑 or 🐸 ?

Polls are open!

Leon the frog any day. He is better looking and not a mama's boy.

I was thinking about this episode with the human Leon the other day. I could not remember if it was on Different Strokes or FOL,

Well, we don't really know much about Leon's ties to his home life, but he does seem to be a very confident, independent frog getting away from Laura and hopping up on Mrs. Garrett.

Also, that pale green material really sets off his dark green froggy skin in an amphibiously wonderful way.

Yeah, I think that's a really neat story they did for Mrs. Garrett there with a younger man that they never did on FOL.

Maybe people aren't voting for Leon the human because, for a human, he doesn't have blond hair, blue eyes, or freckles, which, as we know, means he's not...

Yes, she was on for half of the 2nd season of DS. See, FOL episodes 1-4 aired from August 24 to September 14, 1979 before it was pulled from the air, and DS season 2 didn't start until September 21, 1979. Mrs. Garrett was at Eastland in August and September, then was back at the Drummond penthouse from September to at least December (then FOL started airing again in March 1980).

Okay, so let me get this straight: MRS G was away from FOL for almost half a year??? (i never knew that) Which means that between the episode 'I.Q' and 'Overachieving' there was a 6 months gap?:confused::confused:

Yeah, the whole show was gone for half a year! Crazy to think about, huh? (I made a thread about that a month or two ago when I first realized it)

And do you know why? (Sorry, but it comes as a chock to me).:confused::confused:

I'm surely glad they decided NOT to cancel FOL altogether: imagine if they had?:(:(:(

Ratings were not good. They had the show on Saturday night which is not a good time to have a show that was geared toward teens and young adults when they are out of the house. And the show wasn't exactly family oriented so parents with younger children didn't watch it with their kids like they did with Different Strokes.

Now i'm beginning to understand why i had never heard of FOL when i was a child: i grew up watching DIFFERENT STROKES instead..... (i mean, if the rating was not good that makes sense)

I voted for Leon the Frog. His comedic timing was impeccable, and I love it! On the DVD commentaries for Season One of Diff'rent Strokes, he said he had the hardest time nailing the jump onto Mrs. Garrett. For a while, director Asaad Kelada said they were likely going to end up using a frog stunt double. But Leon insisted on a few more takes, and in the end, he pulled it off!

In the deleted scenes, you can see that the first time, Leon accidentally hops onto Nancy instead of Mrs. Garrett. On his second attempt, his aim was much better, but Laura Shuman then accidentally ruins the take by calling him "Michigan". It's not until the third take that he finally nails the scene!

Of course, shortly after this, he says he noticed some coldness coming from Charlotte Rae. They began to have what he called a "surf and turf war" over lines. He wanted more interaction with the girls, but Charlotte felt that was not what he was hired for. He also began demanding bugs between scenes, and started showing up to work hopped up on beetles. It just wasn't working out. So, shortly into taping, Leon asked his agent to break his contract, and he left the show after just one episode.

Scenes had to be hastily re-written, as the second episode was going to be a Leon-centric one. Eventually, they hired a pig to replace him. Leon was forever upset about this, years later claiming the role was written for a frog, and a pig could never fill the role. To his dying day, Leon was bitter about that pig not being "All-Amphibian Enough".

Oh no, no. He wasn't mean. In fact, if you wanna get the scoop on this Leon in Mrs. Garrett's life, you can watch it right here! (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x53cyfn)

DS Season 2, episode 5 - "Mrs. Garrett's Romance"

It aired October 12, 1979, just a few weeks after FOL was pulled after 4 episodes before it would return in March with 9 more episodes. So you can assume Mrs. Garrett left Eastland and went back to the Drummonds, as she promised Mr. Drummond she would in the FOL's first episode in August. I like to think Eastland couldn't find anyone else after that and they BEGGED her to come back!

You made a typo there...DS season 2. I know DS couldn't have lasted 9 godawful years! (Antenna TV is showing the Dixie Carter season towards the end of the run and it's SO bad by that point! It's completely unwatchable and the subject matter is just way out there for a family sitcom!)

I'll have to watch that one with Mrs. G and human Leon. Now if this was a Bewitched episode human Leon would actually be Frog Leon who turned himself into human form because he fell in love with Edna and followed her from Eastland to Manhattan.
