View Full Version : Out of the Fire
cfr1970 04-07-2020, 04:08 PM I remember this when I watched in 1985! This is the first time seeing it since then.
Blair's hair though. I know it was the mid 80's but--- puke::barf:
She looks like she stuck her finger in a light socket.:lol:
I just don't buy Mrs. G not wanting to rebuild Edna's Edibles again. She was SO excited when she opened that store just 2 years ago. I think she's be jumping to get things back up and running again.
And her son owned the store, so he'd be the one updating the insurance policy, not her. Remember, she was just renting it from him when she first opened it.
I forgot it was Nat & Tootie's idea to do the kitsch shop. Those things she pulled out of the bag were butt ugly! I can't believe Jo & Blair got on board so quickly with that concept....to basically sell ugly junk.:lol::lol:
I'm really liking Natalie more and more. I love her independence and she seems to have matured a lot in the last couple of seasons.
Does Blair's hair stay like that for the whole season?! Please say it doesn't...the beautiful flowing puffiness has been replaced with electrical socket hair.:lol:
Tootie kept raving about her hair change....but...it looked pretty much the same as it did in season 6 to me.

I can't get 'OUT OF THE FIRE' on YouTube! (they don't have it) so i can't watch it!
But: i remember watching it about 10 years ago (YouTube still had it) and not not liking BLAIR's hair either!
I also hated the fact that MRS G didn't seem 'upset' at all about the fire, and just said "I was getting tired of 'Edna's Edibles' anyway)???
I only like the end: when all girls are standing in the kitchen with their thoughts (BLAIR is thinking "I love you Mrs Garret, but is it going to last until Tuesday?. NAT thoughts are "[I]Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... Are we finished yet? And the other two i can't remember) and MRS G says to them " To a new partnership!":talk:
Did i get that right? (i mean, from what i can remember?)
80s Dude 04-07-2020, 04:37 PM The late seasons episodes definitely got weaker.

Yeah, Blair's is right, Natalie was counting down the days till her Venice trip.....Now I can't remember what Jo and Tootie were thinking!
I LOL'd when Natalie was thinking about how Tootie rambles and also of her upcoming trip while Tootie was going on and on and then Tootie looks over at Natalie who continues with her thoughts and it's like Tootie can hear every word going on in her head. The visual of that was just so funny.
Valentina, you don't have season 7 dvd?!
cfr1970 04-07-2020, 04:53 PM The late seasons episodes definitely got weaker.
I think season 7 is starting off good though. I don't like how Mrs. G just gave up on her gourmet shop so quickly, but I really liked the whole episode overall. I'll be watching each one now wondering where it's all gonna take it's bad turn.
Lorimar Television 04-07-2020, 05:24 PM Sadly Blair's hairstyle is like that for a while
cfr1970 04-07-2020, 05:33 PM Sadly Blair's hairstyle is like that for a while
I'll just have to endure it. The thing is it's not really a bad hairstyle (for the mid 80's) it's just so NOT Blair who's much more classic and conservative in her style rather than hip.
valentina warner 04-07-2020, 06:15 PM Yeah, Blair's is right, Natalie was counting down the days till her Venice trip.....Now I can't remember what Jo and Tootie were thinking!

Nope, i don't have season 7 (i only got the DVDs from season 1 to 6) but i know most episodes are on youTube: it's just that before i get to it, i'd really like to watch 'OUT OF FIRE', cos it's a crucial episode, so i'll have to wait and see how i am gonna get to it.....
The thing is, i cannot watch it on Daily motion either, cos UK doesn't accept it, so i'll keep searching online for the 'Out of fire' episode until i can continue with the rest of season 7 lol!
PS: brace yourself, cos GEORGE CLOONEY is also one of the main ones on season 7 i remember! (no BEVERLY ANN yet)

The season 7 dvd is only $7.80 right now on Amazon...at least in the U.S. Is it the same over there in the UK? Or do you guys have a different website for it? ...Ok, I just Googled Amazon UK and you do have your own Amazon.
Season 7 over there costs 28.94 (I think it's in euros? Or pounds?!) Still so much! Yikes.
And George Clooney yes, i'm bracing myself! puke::barf:
At least he's only on for 17 episodes.

What??? How come it's so cheap in the USA and so expensive in the UK?
We take 'pounds' (Euros is in most European countries):p
In that case, i'll see if i can buy it from USA AMAZON (Only if they accept to ship it to the UK);)
And if it works, i might even get season 8 and 9 (just to see BEVERLY ANN make a fool of herself)

For $7.80 i'm tempted to buy it myself, but I really want to get that complete set so i'll hold back and save my money for that. I hope you'll be able to get it for that price. Even to ship to the UK, it should be much less than what the UK Amazon is selling it for.

For a second I got confused and thought you were talking about me lol. (My name is Christopher too. But keep calling me by cfr1970 so there no confusion!).
Does he like Beverly Ann?...I really shouldn't make fun of her since it's been a while since i've seen her episodes. I hated Andy back then, but he doesn't annoy me at all now. So maybe i'll like the old spiky haired lady this time around.

Yes, the real Edna Garrett would have reopened her shop. However, she was replaced by Pod Person Edna Garrett between seasons. The PPED doesn't care about her shop, got tired of making her delicious quiche and apple strudel, and now wants to open a kitsch shop. The real Edna is tied up in the kitchen, struggling against her bonds, but the girls don't even notice.
And her son owned the store, so he'd be the one updating the insurance policy, not her. Remember, she was just renting it from him when she first opened it.
YEP.

I am enjoying your discussions of the episodes. I look forward to them rolling back around to Season One.
TV Guy 04-07-2020, 08:34 PM I do agree that Edna is out of character in this episode, and the whole “I didn’t update my insurance” doesn’t ring true. Where is Raymond in all of this? He owns the building - he’s responsible for structural repairs. Edna is responsible for the contents of the place.
That said, I do like this episode, because it’s really funny. The girls’ verbalized thoughts at the beginning and the end are a riot. “I love you Mrs. Garrett - please keep this short.” And Tootie’s thoughts perfectly matching what she’s saying - LOL.
valentina warner 04-07-2020, 08:38 PM It will actually get worse...

That's quite funny actually and i can see it clearly: our 'real' MRS G tide up in the kitchen and her 'clone' self running everyone else's life! (just like in the movie 'THE STEPFORD WIVES' ha ha!)
But BLAIR's hair doesn't get worse: it actually improves once she gets it straight in the following seasons lol;)

I agree. Season 8 and 9 Blair Hair is much better than Season 7 Blair Hair.

Producers must have known Charlotte wanted out of the show and this was how they were setting things early on up for her exit. At least they had Tootie see right through Pod Edna's phony act but the others just wouldn't believe her.
And if she didn't update the insurance, why on earth did the girls get nice checks for their personal property? (I'm thinking 10k each, which would be $40k total and enough to renovate and reopen in 1985 dollars) That makes no sense, unless she intentionally dropped the major coverage, and nobody does that! When you renew the policy, your present coverage is automatically updated from the previous year to the next. Poor writing...or Pod Edna did it purposely!
Glad you are enjoying Natalie.
I am enjoying your discussions of the episodes. I look forward to them rolling back around to Season One.
Thanks! If this keeps up, Natalie may hit the #1 spot and bump off Bootsie clone, electric socket haired Blair from her throne.:lol:
Season 1 should come back around on Antenna TV the last week of May. I too look forward to how i'm going to like it....I know there's huge fans here of that season, but i'm still going to be totally honest! So i'm warning everyone now--don't take it personal if I completely trash it to pieces!:lol:--I don't think that will happen though. :)

That's not what I said during the post you're referring to. You were wanting a fictional character to die in a fire. I commented that that was sadistic. Since you didn't read what I wrote on that thread, I'll repeat it again. I do know someone who died in a house fire and I can't even imagine or want to imagine the horror they went through. Wanting someone, fictional or not, to burn alive is sick and it's offensive to those like me that know someone who died in a fire. To be honest with you though if a character bothers you that much, find a different show to watch. I've never once wanted any of the characters I hated to die. They bug me but I do the normal thing and just pass over them to who I really like in the show. Food for thought.

I like season 8 Beverly Ann because she clicked with the premise of the show. Season 9 Beverly Ann I feel is a useless character that didn't fit. I would have liked to have seen her just be a one season character since she fit in with the show her first season and they wrote her very well where she bonded with the girls. Season 9 she's just out of place. That's my opinion on Beverly Ann.

I can't believe you said that right in the same thread where someone feels it's wrong to wish death on characters. Christopher is going to give you a good scolding now! :nonono::nonono:
For the life of me I don't remember this Pippa person at all. I think I was definitely tuned out by the time she appeared. I see her picture and don't recognize her at all.

How the heck does Pippa become part of the group? At that point there's no one left at Eastland anymore, so how does this girl wind up in the group's lives and part of the main cast?!
Was she a love interest for little Andy? That would make sense.

Bingo! PIPPA did become ANDY's love interest, but how did she end up at FOL...;)
Here it goes: she turned up at the girls house in the middle of the night (apparently she got lost) and wakes them all including BEVERLY ANN & ANDY!
Anyway, PIPPA ends up being under the care of 'eccentric' BEVERLY ANN, and she enrolls at the 'Eastland School for Girls'

Thanks valentina. It sounds so contrived. Why on earth would her parents ship her off to America to attend Eastland HS in a small town like Peeskill?! Don't they have boarding schools in Australia?
Funny I guessed her being a love interest for Andy. It was the only logical thing that made sense for a girl that age to be hanging around the Core Four. Does she move in with them and live in the house too?!
I like the way you add those different fun emojis. I never noticed that one in the jars.

What was even worse was that they justified her showing up unexpectedly by having Beverly Ann say, “Oh yeah, Edna mentioned that she signed up to host an exchange student”. So Edna signed up over a year ago, and no one ever bothered to tell you that a student was coming?

That's not how it was. Beverly Ann found the papers in a drawer in the kitchen about the exchange student. What a miracle she finds them the day after Pippa shows up though  They should have just let it be known Edna mentioned it instead of throwing in that scene because it was too stupid IMO. They wait until that moment to go through the drawers in the kitchen? ohno:

Yeah, and that's not how exchange programs work. They wouldn't send a student along without first contacting the host family again to make sure things were fully arranged. What kind of exchange program was this?! You get a student just by filling out an application, no further follow-up needed?
valentina warner 04-09-2020, 05:12 PM Pippa and Andy never date
True: PIPPA and ANDY never dated, but he fancied her (though she didn't him):p
Impressions 04-22-2020, 09:32 PM So yeah, I rewatched it and I have some thoughts.
Unpopular opinion: I think Mrs. G. set arson (with help) to her shop because she wanted to collect a check in hopes to start a new life without the girls. She sends the girls off for summer vacation and then just before they arrive, she sets it on fire, she “went shopping,” then “tried” to call the girls about it, tells them “something in the kitchen caught fire,” tells the girls every thing is “replaceable.” Girls go looking in the kitchen, tells the insurance agent if she thinks “they bought” her story as if she needed reassurance that she did a good job lying about what she told the girls and says it like he could have probably been in on it. Her attitude through this whole episode just doesn’t fly or seem believable. She is nonchalant about it burning down, cries crocodile tears before the first commercial break, and then tells the girls that she’s “tired of it” and that it “took over her life.” Then, smiles and says this as a good opportunity to go back to school and travel more, and then later, gets overly excited when the insurance checks come in. Then she is totally against starting over again and never updated the insurance. What? As far as we know, the police never show up, her son never shows up to asses the damage or investigate what actually happened, and it feels like a setup for Mrs. G. to get out of everything Scot free and the audience is supposed to believe and accept everything as true. Is anyone else skeptical about this fire?
In hindsight, we all know the writers set this episode up so Charlotte Rae could ease her way of the show as she was not showing an interest in being on the show anymore.
Something just felt incredibly off in this episode.
RetroGuy2000 04-22-2020, 09:47 PM So yeah, I rewatched it and I have some thoughts.
Unpopular opinion: I think Mrs. G. set arson (with help) to her shop because she wanted to collect a check in hopes to start a new life without the girls. I am definitely skeptical of Edna's attitude that she was tired of the shop. She's been replaced by Pod Person Edna between seasons, for sure!

It's true. This shop was Mrs. Garrett's pride and joy. The idea that she'd give it up so easily seems so foreign to me. And in what world is her son, the actual building owner, never called or even consulted?

I think you have a point and i would certainly not disagree with you: MRS G was never herself again after the fire, and in this whole season 7, but rather a clone of herself!!!! (A reason why i DISLIKED season 7):eek::eek:
You could tell CHARLOTTE RAE was no longer present and wanted to leave: she wasn't enjoying being part of the show anymore.....:(:(:(
So anything is possible about your theories.....:p:p:p
