TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 12:32 PM Well just started watching and its the episode when the food critic dies from eating Mel's Jail House Chili.
By the way, Why would a food critic be going to eat at a truck stop diner??

Yeah, I never understood that about why a fancy food critic would be spending time at a truck stop diner. That food critic guy seemed too fancy and he was all the time going on about Peking Duck. I'm surprised he wasn't visiting snobby French restaurants.
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 12:45 PM Yeah, I never understood that about why a fancy food critic would be spending time at a truck stop diner. That food critic guy seemed too fancy and he was all the time going on about Peking Duck. I'm surprised he wasn't visiting snobby French restaurants.
Yes didnt make a lot of sense at all. Wearing a suit and asking for chili:lol:
Also how would tommy be able to get to the diner by himself? I always had this image of the diner being located on a big wide road
Wawwie 04-04-2020, 12:49 PM Yes didnt make a lot of sense at all. Wearing a suit and asking for chili:lol:

Yeah, they've said the diner is located on "Bush Highway" so I would imagine that's a busy area. I hope Tommy wasn't going there on his skate board.

The tommy character seem to be needed

Maybe ride his bike or took the bus ? Back in the 70 's kids got around on their own without parents driving them , safer times. There were child molesters and kidnappers back than but it wasn't really that common or known about yet !

Wonder if Pheonix had public transportation
Bonniegirl 04-04-2020, 01:13 PM Wonder if Pheonix had public transportation
Yeah, Vera and Alice used to take the bus to work , I remember it was mentioned in some eps. !! ;)
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 01:17 PM Yeah, Vera and Alice used to take the bus to work , I remember it was mentioned in some eps. !! ;)
Was Tommy Father ever mentioned?
Wawwie 04-04-2020, 01:18 PM Yeah, Vera and Alice used to take the bus to work , I remember it was mentioned in some eps. !! ;)
Yep, that's why they bought Mel's car in the "Car Wars" episode. They were tired of taking the bus.
Wawwie 04-04-2020, 01:18 PM Was Tommy Father ever mentioned?
Yes, many times. Tommy's father, Don Hyatt was killed in an auto accident.
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 01:20 PM Yep, that's why they bought Mel's car in the "Car Wars" episode. They were tired of taking the bus.
Oh ok, Im picturing a kid walking along a big road lol
Bonniegirl 04-04-2020, 01:25 PM Yep, that's why they bought Mel's car in the "Car Wars" episode. They were tired of taking the bus.
Yeah probably Flo took the bus too! ;) Phoenix is a city, like a medium sized city, not a NY, Philly or LA , so they had bus service but I'm sure no trains, like subways or El's or anything like that !
Seemed Mel's was kind of on the edge of town , kind of the outskirts of Phoenix , but I guess a bus line still went there ? Probably one of those that runs on the hour, if you miss it you are screwed and would be really late !

You know how Dennys is always is located on a roadside, That's how I always pictured Mel's Diner
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 01:42 PM The episode on now is when Mel hires a waiter and pays him more and justified his reason why. It was because most men had families to take care of and needed to be paid more. Alice on the otherhand was only taking care of Tommy and was a 2 household family
Bonniegirl 04-04-2020, 02:38 PM I just watched the ep.with the old lady who sold Mel the pies ! ( Adelaide from Different Strokes) she is so funny,:D love her !! :)Anyway, I can't believe nobody could figure out it was her that was stealing the food supplies from the diner and it was her making ths long distance call to NJ! Esp.after she told Alice her Son was stationed in Fort Dix !!:lol:

I didnt even have her mind that was a nice curveball.
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 02:46 PM Watching the ep now where Mel has to decide which one of the girls to let go which kind of made sense since only 2 waitress was only needed for that small diner lol
Bonniegirl 04-04-2020, 02:49 PM Damn! I gotta leave for work! :( Hoping this marathon is still on when I get home at 5:00 ? That would be 8 your time! How long does this run?
Bonniegirl 04-04-2020, 02:50 PM I didnt even have her mind that was a nice curveball.
Yeah, nobody suspected a sweet little old lady ! :D
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 02:53 PM Damn! I gotta leave for work! :( Hoping this marathon is still on when I get home at 5:00 ? That would be 8 your time! How long does this run?

Bonniegirl 04-04-2020, 02:58 PM Yes the last episode is 11:30pm my time
Oh good ! Than I can watch some after work !! :)

But when Mel went out for whatever reason, he had to have one of them do the cooking.
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 03:11 PM But when Mel went out for whatever reason, he had to have one of them do the cooking.
Not Vera lol
Wawwie 04-04-2020, 03:25 PM Not Vera lol
Mel would never leave Vera in charge of the diner, but he did have Vera cook at times. I remember some episodes where Vera would wear Mel's hat as she worked the grill. But only Alice or Jolene were ever left in charge which is so funny because Vera had much more seniority than Jolene!

Surprise to see so many robbery episodes Im guessing the diner was in the bad part of town
Wawwie 04-04-2020, 03:46 PM My favorite episode of Alice is on. It's the two parter when Mel sells the diner to Randolph Briggs. I like the second part best when Mel turns Alice's apartment into a restaurant!

I see it now they sitting in Alice Apt and Mel is taking their orders now LOL
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 04:59 PM Noticing in the Telly Savalas episode that the scene with them breaking the plates in the dinner while doing the Greek Dance is a similar scene on Three;s company when Jack opened his Bistro and Larrys; Family was breaking plates
And both Mel and Jack end the episode with saying OPA!!
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 06:36 PM Why did the replacements for Flo have to be similar?
Same dumb **** they did on TC when they tried to replace chrissy
Makes the replacement more annoying
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 06:39 PM Three's Company did a lot of copying from Alice. They copied the episode when Mel was at the Atm and all the money came out of the machine
TV Guy 04-04-2020, 06:54 PM Too many guest stars playing themselves. “George Burns, what are you doing in Phoenix?” But that’s to be expected from Lucille Ball’s former writers, who took over the show in season 2.
I agree on Flo’s replacements. Diane Ladd’s Flo in the movie was very different from Polly’s TV Flo, and had a much harder edge. I think having a character like that would have been more interesting than making Belle a poor copy of the TV Flo.

If it was any character they should have gotten rid of it should have been tommy:lol:
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 07:28 PM The opening credits definitely dont match the episodes because based on all the robbery eps you would think the show is based in the Bronx:lol:
The area based on the opening makes it looks like Mel's Diner is on a country road
Bonniegirl 04-04-2020, 08:36 PM OMG !! That silly ep.with Arnold Horshak and Jay Leno as motorcyle thugs just started !!:D

TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 10:26 PM The guy who is playing Mel's cousin is did a poor job of playing a nerd. He makes steve urkel look normal

That's so sad. Way too young to die, only 5 years older than I am now.
Wawwie 04-04-2020, 11:59 PM did anyone see the episode with boss hogg and enos
That wasn't one of my favorite episodes, never liked Dukes of Hazzard either.
TVFactFan 04-04-2020, 11:59 PM did anyone see the episode with boss hogg and enos
Yes the crossover with Dukes of Hazzard
MikeLutton 04-05-2020, 12:31 AM one of my fav episodes i was surprised he was on there when i first saw it back in early 90s
OH Nuts! 04-05-2020, 12:37 AM OMG !! That silly ep.with Arnold Horshak and Jay Leno as motorcyle thugs just started !!:D
And it was a kinda dumb ep. But it was great seeing the two so out of their usual context.
OH Nuts! 04-05-2020, 12:44 AM It was interesting watching Alice after so many years. While I certainly don’t hate the show, I would rarely go out of my way to watch it, outside of a Narathon.
The final marathon ep, where Alice gets replaced by a robot named Blanche. Blanche initially turns out to be great, and even ends up costing Jolene and Vera their jobs. But greedy piggy Mel tries to put Blsnche in overdrive and BOY does she short circuit. Now THaiS was a very funny ep.

I have to say that 12pm to 12am is the perfect time for a weekend marathon. It allows you to get up and do other things before it starts and it ends at the time. Never understood the marathon where it airs overnight

Archie Bunker’s Place is nice but I like All In The Family much much more. I’ll probably watch an ep or two from the marathon but right now I’m really getting into ODAAT with my buds.

Too many plots revolved around the waitresses essentially being trapped at Mel’s where he could treat them poorly, because there were literally no other jobs in the area. I was watching the one where Mel installs the time clock, and then refuses to give pay the waitresses overtime. I would have just reported him to the board of labor.

I dont see why it was a big deal to work at a topless sandwich shop if i meant more money:lol: I mean it wasnt like they was going to be having sex just serving food.
