Bill Withers, ‘Lean On Me,' ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ singer, dies at 81

Singer-songwriter Bill Withers, the soulful crooner behind hits including “Lean On Me,” “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lovely Day," has died, The Associated Press reported Friday. He was 81.

In a statement obtained by the AP, Withers’ family said the three-time Grammy Award winner died Monday in Los Angeles from heart complications.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other,” the family statement said. “As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”

"Lean on Me" is among my top 10 most despised songs. I love "Lovely Day" as posted above, but this is by far my favorite.

Too sappy and it's been shoved-down-my-throat for years. I know many people love the song, but I'm not one of them.

There's a cover version by Club Nouveau that I prefer over the original, but the original is just okay.

Their version is ok , but I never cared for Club Nouveau after they changed their name from Timex Social Club.

'Lean on Me' singer Bill Withers's cause of death revealed

Bill Withers’s cause of death has been revealed.

The “Lean on Me” singer died on March 30 at the age of 81 after suffering a “cardiopulmonary arrest,” or an arrest resulting in absence of cardiac and pulmonary activity, according to his death certificate, which was obtained by the news outlet TMZ. The document also states that bradyarrhythmia, a disturbance of the heart's rhythm, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs, were contributing factors.

The Withers family noted when he died that “heart complications” were to blame.
