Joe Diffie Dies: Country Music Hitmaker Had Coronavirus Complications, Passes At 61

Joe Diffie, one of country music’s biggest stars in the early 1990s, died Sunday from complications caused by contracting the COVID-19 virus. He was 61 and his death was confirmed by his publicist.

Diffie was a traditional country artist, drawing on his honky-tonk background and deep, rich voice to craft a string of hits after his debut. He had five Number One singles in the first half of the Nineties. His hits included Home, If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets), Third Rock From the Sun, Pickup Man, Bigger Than the Beatles, Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die) and John Deere Green.

His overall career resume saw him score 18 Top Ten singles. His remarkable career was name-checked in Jason Aldean’s 2013 single 1994.

Born Joseph Logan Diffie in Tulsa and raised in Velma, Oklahoma, the family moved through San Antonio, Washington state, and Wisconsin during his early years. Diffie learned from each stop, working in gospel and bluegrass groups while playing a string of bars, VFW halls, and honky-tonks, all while working in a foundry to support his wife and children.

I know that at the end of the day, awards are not what get the bills taken care of, but to me, Joe deserved more than what is on this list here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Diffie#Awards_and_nominations).

God bless you and his family and the rest of his fan base always!!!

P.S. Especially after that flawless 1992 performance of "The Ships That Don't Come In" that took place during the Music City News awards.......I wonder if anyone that night regretted their decision to not vote for him since the votes had been cast at some point before that performance took place. May the man get the proper respect now that he is gone if it couldn't have been given to him while he was here. Of course, one person's definition of proper will not mirror another person's definition of proper.

P.S. It is very much appreciated how much has been shared about Joe, especially when maybe at the end of the day, the family doesn't owe the fans much if anything at all. I do remember hearing Joe say on the radio years ago that the fans are who keep celebrities going and so if I have ever overstepped in any way by caring about my favorites so much to where I may ask about things that might be private, I do apologize. To me, people as wonderful as Joe deserve all of the thought and respect in the world, especially when respect is what comes from people like him first. :) :) :)
