View Full Version : "Come Back to the Truck Stop, Natalie Green, Natalie Green"
cfr1970 04-01-2020, 04:10 PM Well this sure was a change of pace!...Antenna TV played this season 7 episode today for their "Slap Happy April Fool's" thingy. (lame I know)
Anyway, I know I had to have seen this one because the air date is November of '85 and I know for a fact I watched FOL every Sat. night religiously at that time. But I wasn't remembering any of it as I watched this bizarre episode unfold.
Jo looks fantastic with all that '80's makeup on her. Loved it and wished she wore more makeup during the series. Nancy M is very pretty and the makeup only brings out her best features.
Best line was form Tootie about George, saying exactly what I was thinking---"Does he have to be here?" Thank you Tootie!! :loveya:
Best part was Mrs. G's entrance towards the end. I wasn't expecting that because I thought it was one of her absent episodes.
Blair filing her nails through her gloves.
And CHARO?! I guess it must have been her week off from "The Love Boat".
A fun episode...but once is enough for me lol. I can see why I don't remember any of it. Maybe I blocked the whole episode out of my mind.

Christopher 04-01-2020, 10:51 PM This is one of my favorites from season 7. I love when Blair goes to grab a gun, she grabs the pork chop instead trying to act tough. Natalie goes, "Oh that's a pork chop." Blair responds, "My mistake" and blows on it like a gun goes off. Lisa does some of her best comedy acting in this episode. The scene where she twirls around and goes to lean against the door but it opens on her is funny too.
I must be one of the only fans of this show that didn't mind George. He didn't bother me when he was on the show. His character was more tolerable than some of the lost girls IMO.

I'm the same way. I'm neutral on him.
His character was more tolerable than some of the lost girls IMO.
And MO quite differs there, lol.

Blair was very funny and they all looked like they had a great time filming this one. As for George, even back then I felt he wasn't needed there and I can see why he was only in 17 episodes (according to IMDB). I didn't like him on Roseanne either when he went over there.
Also, the IMDB says this about it on it's episode page :
"Natalie is in a truck stop diner in Pennsylvania where she writes a story, relating the characters in it to the people in her own life."
Maybe it was edited out, but what the hell was she doing in Pennsylvania on a bicycle by herself? Was she still in HS in this season?! The show begins with her walking in the diner with the bike and reaching Blair's answering machine saying she's coming home. Maybe the scene explaining this was taken out?

Oh no no, she wasn't in HS anymore. She didn't go to college after graduating. She went instead to "experiencing the world" (though it was mostly in Peekskill, lol).

Oh! I think i'm remembering that now. I was naturally expecting her to go to Langley with Jo and Blair when she left Eastland...but now it's coming back to me.
What about Tootie? She was out of Eastland before the series was over right?
Christopher 04-01-2020, 11:35 PM What about Tootie? She was out of Eastland before the series was over right?
Tootie was still in Eastland, but they phased Eastland out in season 7. The Eastland uniform isn't shown at all in season 7. Tootie is in her graduation gown in the episode 'The Graduate'. They made viewers forget Tootie was in high school until that episode.

Ok, I see 'The Graduate' aired May of 86, so Tootie was out of HS for the last 2 seasons. Now i'm peeking at all the episodes after that and I really don't want to but I can't help myself. I see in 'Off Broadway Baby' that Tootie auditions for a Broadway play, so I assume she too didn't go to college either?
Now i'm going to force myself to stop peeking at episode guides because I like being surprised!

Tootie goes to college but she still pursues acting auditions. Off Broadway Baby is fun. The girls go to New York. Natalie comforts Tootie for her audition while Blair and Jo show Beverly Ann around New York. Stacy Q appears in the episode as Cinnamon.

No I remember Cinnamon! She was Stacy Q. My FOL memories are really weird. All the Edna's Edibles episodes I mostly have forgotten, but I remember main bits and pieces of the Over Our Heads seasons, especially the 85-86 season and the fall of 86....it's from beginning of '87 and on I have no memory of it because I turned 17 and got my first car so there was no way in hell I was going to be sitting home watching FOL anymore.
I don't mind questions being answered, I just want to stop peeking at the episode guide because when I go there to look at a specific show for air dates and such, I get curious and start scrolling down to the other episodes and I have to stop myself!
I do the same thing with MTM which i'm currently watching weekly on dvd. I have to force myself to stop scrolling at other episodes before seeing them. The internet can be one big spoiler for the weak!!

I can't wait to see that movie!! That's one I haven't seen since it originally aired and I know Antenna TV is going break it up into 4 heavily edited episodes, so i'm going to try not tuning in for that when it airs and wait till I get the Complete Series and see it full and uncut.

I thank God we didn't have internet back in the 80's and early 90's for soap operas. I'd have been spoiled so much it would've taken all the fun out of watching tv.

Oh, I know. I'm also glad there was no Internet for no message boards back then. I love that I got to grow up with my favorite shows feeling such a personal intimate connection with them where you were just "1-on-1" (or shared family affair) with your shows. :loveya:

Yeah I miss those days when it was just you and the people on TV and a lot more intimate then.
And the shows you'd watch in the evenings you'd talk about the next day in school with classmates instead of boards like this. It was so much more personal. You felt like you knew those people on TV because of that and why I prefer old shows and classics because it's like revisiting old friends. :)

Oh yeah a lot from both movies were extremely edited for syndication. They're both 96 minutes and some seconds on the DVD release. In syndication, each of the four parts were 20 minutes each. The opening and closing credits take up a little over 2 minutes because networks don't edit those. That leaves you with 18 minutes for each of the 4 parts syndication breaks it up in. Of course they take out scenes that help the movie make sense for viewers.

I did that back in my school years. Buffy was the biggest show at my high school to talk about the next day. Everything was personal back then. Everyone was learning social skills that were needed for development. Now, kids isolate themselves on their phones or tablets. I think this new generation already defined social distancing since they'd rather be on social media than hang out with friends in person.
Also, I prefer old shows as well. Not because it's like visiting old friends. The quality of television was better back then. Today it's rare finding shows that are interesting. Right now Supernatural and Mom are the only two shows I make the effort of watching when it's new. Supernatural I've watched since day 1 when it started as I did with Mom. Where I've been with them this long, I gotta see how they end

According to that math, that means a total of 24 MINUTES is butchered out of the movie?! Is that actually possible?! I think that's so ridiculous. That's a whole other part they could just air making it 5 parts and still keep all their damn Medicare commercials in.
Wow! And it's not just us who should be upset. Think about the actors who did those scenes and to have them snipped out is having their work treated like crap. What if one of them feels their best acting of the whole series was in one of those snipped scenes? Boy would they be rightfully pissed off.

I read some of these kids actually have anxiety talking on the phone in person with someone and they don't know what to say! And they say they feel much more comfortable e mailing or texting. That's extreme. Absolutely zero social skills!

I caught a couple episodes of Supernatural a long time ago. It looked like a quality show, and the long run backs that up. I've debated starting that up but there's so many seasons, it's like that other show Dr. Who---it would take me years to get through it. Hasn't it been on TV now like 15 years?!---And still going!
Wikipedia shows 320 episodes! And an hour long each....I'll be 60 when i'm through with them.:lol::lol:
The one in your Avatar I know is one of the stars---I watched him way back in the late 90's when he was Eric Brady on Days of Our Lives and brother to evil Sami Brady.

I think that's so odd. Who wouldn't rather hang out in person playing video games and watching movies?

I've heard about kids not wanting to go into a bank, but just do it all on their phone.
Today it's rare finding shows that are interesting. Right now Supernatural and Mom are the only two shows I make the effort of watching when it's new.
And the only ones I make an effort for are, surprise surprise, shows set in nostalgia, lol: "The Goldbergs" of the '80s, and "Schooled" of the '90s.

The one in your Avatar I know is one of the stars---I watched him way back in the late 90's when he was Eric Brady on Days of Our Lives and brother to evil Sami Brady.
Aha!! For years I've wondered if that was Christopher himself or a TV actor, lol (and I saw some of Sami in the early '90s and hated her).

I've heard about kids not wanting to go into a bank, but just do it all on their phone.
They're a weird species aren't they? This is a whole generation that didn't spend their evenings talking on the phone for hours with friends, didn't climb trees or ride their bikes till the sun went down, didn't walk to and from school by themselves from first grade on. So sheltered that when they finally got out into the world as adults, they're afraid of everything including their own damn shadow! It's pathetic.
And the only ones I make an effort for are, surprise surprise, shows set in nostalgia, lol: "The Goldbergs" of the '80s, and "Schooled" of the '90s.
I was excited for The Goldbergs when it began and gleefully tuned in. But right from the start they began jumping all around the damn decade that it was too distracting.
Why couldn't they just start from one year and go on in a straight timeline?! One week you'd see a 1981 reference and the next it was 1989. You CAN'T do that!!
I had to tune out because the 80's are my favorite decade and I just couldn't sit and watch it crapped on like that.
To borrow and tweek a quote from "The Golden Girls", "You'll be 60 anyway!"
I don't want reminders! 50 isn't too bad...but 60 is the age my grandparents were when I was little. Now THAT'S scary!!
Aha!! For years I've wondered if that was Christopher himself or a TV actor, lol (and I saw some of Sami in the early '90s and hated her).

Really? I didn't mind at all---I loved it! I love the '80s so much I'll take 'em however I can get 'em! lol :bighug:
Why couldn't they just start from one year and go on in a straight timeline?! One week you'd see a 1981 reference and the next it was 1989. You CAN'T do that!!
Because when the show started, Adam F. Goldberg had no idea who long the show would make it. So when it started out, they put as much '80s love into it as they could in case it got canceled before another season.
I had to tune out because the 80's are my favorite decade and I just couldn't sit and watch it crapped on like that.
Well, I'm sorry you couldn't enjoy it. Maybe if you think about the reasons above though you might see it in a different neon dayglo '80s light. :) After all, Adam grew up in the '80s too, and this show is his love letter to that decade.

That makes him even more of a hack. If he was confident in his show and writing, he wouldn't have felt the need to cram the whole decade into it while expecting cancellation. The way he did it in the beginning was such a mess having everything all over the place.
Since it's been on for years now, have they finally settled on a logical and linear timeline?

It wasn't only all the anachronisms, it was also that screaming mother and screaming teenage son. Both of them grated on my nerves so much I couldn't take them anymore. From what I remember, both were so over the top with their acting I wanted to bash their heads together.
Oh! You're one of "those"!
One of what? Is there a name for us Sami fans?
I know there are many who hate her with a passion. I remember when the internet first came around the early 90's. (Does anyone remember Prodigy? I had it in spring of 1992)
Anyway they had soap opera message boards way back then and SO many Sami haters were spewing their hate for her lol. Her character had both extremes...either you really loved her or really hated her...there was just no in between with that character!

I don't think it made him a hack at all. TV is tough. Did you see Fox's new series "The Cool Kids" a couple of years ago with David Alan Grier, Vicki Lawrence, Martin Mull, and Leslie Jordan? I found that show so enjoyable, with many good laughs, and Fox extended their initial half season to a full season, but then canceled it after that first season. So these days you never know how long a show is gonna work! I don't blame him at all. Knowing the way the networks are today, I would have been wary too and also wanted to get out as much of my love for my show as I could.
Since it's been on for years now, have they finally settled on a logical and linear timeline?
Nope! I think that's part of the fun, though: "It was March 30th, 1980-something, and " (see what I did there Mr. Half Century? ;) )

I think he still should've followed a linear timeline like That 70's Show did. I get he loves the 80's, but to shove the whole decade plus the kitchen sink into a 30 minute episode was overkill.

That reminded me of my trauma of March 30, 1981 when Reagan's attempted assassination ruined my 11th birthday. I still never recovered from that. Couldn't John Hinkley have expressed his love for Jodie Foster on any other day but mine?! :crybaby:

Part of the fun of those daytime soaps are the evil villians. Without them, it would just be everyone loving each other and that's boring! I've always rooted for the evil ones because they keep things interesting. :)

Oh, well, "Diff'rent Strokes" for diff'rent folks (see what I did there??) The references are lessened now, but in those early seasons I was straining to catch each and every one! :loveya:

TV Guy 04-02-2020, 12:28 PM I love the first three or four seasons of “The Goldbergs”, until I realized that most episodes were about the kids hurting their mom’s feelings and then realizing how great she and the family are...until the next episode.

Hi cfr1970!
I'm very much looking forwards to your NEW THREAD yippee!:happyface:happyface:happyface
valentina warner 04-02-2020, 04:29 PM I think he still should've followed a linear timeline like That 70's Show did.
:crybaby:
AHHH! I never knew what her name was....Another Beverly for me to hate!!:lol::lol:
Part of the fun of those daytime soaps are the evil villians. Without them, it would just be everyone loving each other and that's boring! I've always rooted for the evil ones because they keep things interesting. :)
I can totally understand why you would find it distracting, every time the GOLDBERGS are jumping with their years: i felt the same when one day they were talking about a song from 1982, and the next thing i know they mention 'Dirty dancing' and that was 1987! (i know my dates very well cos i am from the 80 s too hee hee).:confused::confused:
But, how can you compare their beautiful and younger mother named BEVERLY ANN with the 'less attractive and older' (not to be harsh) from FACTS OF LIFE!!!:lol::lol::rotflmao:

That's what really got on my nerves when I watched in the beginning of the series. One minute it was 1982 ans the next it was 1987. Doing that is just too distracting and takes you out of the show. Had they not done that, I probably would've continued watching.
But, how can you compare their beautiful and younger mother named BEVERLY ANN with the 'less attractive and older' (not to be harsh) from FACTS OF LIFE!!!:lol::lol::rotflmao:
I don't know if she still does it, but in the beginning of the series when I watched, that woman would overact and scream too much I wanted to reach in the screen and slap her.
There was also a scene where she mentions Elizabeth Taylor's perfume White Diamonds...which didn't come out until 1991. As soon as she said "White Diamonds" I was like....WTH?! It's NOT a 90's show for God sakes! That was the final straw for me. If you're going to do a show specific to a decade, stay within the lines!!

I know: you'd think the producer who wrote THE GOLDBERGS was in his twenties or early thirties if he got all the dates mixed up lol!
As for slapping beautiful and funny BEVERLY ANN from 'THE GOLDBERGS' is a no no! (better slap the one from FOL instead):rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2020, 06:30 PM I know: you'd think the producer who wrote THE GOLDBERGS was in his twenties or early thirties if he got all the dates mixed up lol!
Well, he was just trying to showcase as much of the whole decade as he could in case they dropped the show. :)
Christopher 04-02-2020, 09:20 PM According to that math, that means a total of 24 MINUTES is butchered out of the movie?!
That's why I'm glad I have the DVDs. There's two scenes from the Paris movie I remember getting cut for syndication. Tootie riding a bicycle in town with a long loaf of french bread and the girls talking to Mrs. Garrett in her hotel room about why they ran away from the school. Personally, the scene where the girls are explaining to Mrs. Garrett why they ran away never should have been cut because you see why she was ok with them not going back.
In the Australia movie the chase scene where Blair and Jo are running from the guys is longer. There's a scene where Jo is talking to the cops on the phone about their situation but the guys won't let Blair and Jo out of their sight long enough to go talk to them. There's more but these ones come to mind because the reason I like the Australia movie more than the Paris one is because Blair and Jo share the same story.
I read some of these kids actually have anxiety talking on the phone in person with someone and they don't know what to say! And they say they feel much more comfortable e mailing or texting. That's extreme. Absolutely zero social skills!
I know. I work with special education in the schools and find more kids get anxiety being in classrooms around other students. They'd rather sit by themselves on a computer doing their schooling than learning the personal skills to form a bond with someone. It's sad.
I think Supernatural is a quality show. Jensen aka Eric from Days is my favorite actor from Supernatural. He's gotten sooo much better since Days with his acting. On Supernatural he's had to do comedy, action, and drama scenes. He's better at comedy than anything else IMO.
Again we're pointing out how many years? Seriously? For the love of God we are old. There, I said it. I hope you're happy :mumble: :violin:  Yes, it's been on for 15 years. It'll have 327 episodes when it's done. They haven't filmed their final two episodes because of the coronavirus. Empire got cut short and will never have a proper series finale because of the virus. I hope The CW doesn't do this with Supernatural. After 15 years, the fans deserve a proper finale.
As for Doctor Who I stopped watching when David Tennant left as the doctor. What they did with Donna, his companion, was so sad. Nothing they could have done after that will top his last season.
I watched Days back in 1999 when Passions started. Princess Gina had taken Hope's identity again and was trying to marry Bo. I also remember Greta and Austin on an island not knowing what was going on. I think it was their 'Adam & Eve' type storyline. I stuck with Days until the ending of the HUGE serial killer storyline they did. I thought it was so awesome and brave for a soap to have the guts to kill off all these main characters. It was so disappointing and a complete waste of time when they all ended up alive on a deserted island. I haven't seen Days since that and will never watch that show again.
Aha!! For years I've wondered if that was Christopher himself or a TV actor, lol (and I saw some of Sami in the early '90s and hated her).
You don't know who Jensen Ackles is? I guess in all fairness he doesn't do anything except Supernatural these days. He would rather be home with his kids and wife than be on movie projects.

I watched both FOL movies, and although i tend to prefer the Paris one, i admit that in the Australian one: BLAIR and JO bonded more (at that time their friendship had matured a lot).
I got the Paris movie with my season 4 (it came as a combo with it i guess) so i was lucky to be able to watch the whole film without any 'cuts' on it!:wave::wave:
RetroGuy2000 04-02-2020, 09:50 PM And CHARO?! I guess it must have been her week off from "The Love Boat".

I want to get the complete series before it gets up to the Australia movie, but it's now going for $95 on Amazon! I'm kicking myself for not getting it when it was $69!

I may try this one after it wraps up. I like supernatural stories so I may enjoy this. One question without giving away spoilers....are the episodes to that show open and shut for each one or is it filled with season long story arcs? I don't mind either...I just hate stories that just drag on and on and on. If you watched "Lost", you'll know what I mean.

I watched all those stories too and loved the serial killer story. I too thought they were really killing all those characters off and it was shocking. Then the island where they all were alive killed that whole story and I too dropped the show and never went back. It was a huge punch in the face to viewers!
Lorimar Television 04-02-2020, 10:50 PM Thats why I prefer sitcoms over dramas and soaps, they RARELY (notice I didnt say never) kill off characters.

That sounds like the opposite of what I'd expect from a fan. But,I'm not entirely surprised, as it seems you have some unconventional views or takes on things (and no, I don't mean just because of disagreements we've had ).

Yeah $69 for 201 episodes, the two TV movies in their original broadcast format, the pilot episode, and the Paley interview is a good deal. I hope you can get it soon. Seeing season 8 uncut might also help you see why it's not a bad season like some fans think it is.
Supernatural doesn't start the season long story arcs until season 4. Then each season has their big bad that they're fighting. One thing I love the most about Supernatural is their ability to do comical episodes. This show is so versatile in the genres, it's no wonder it lasted 15 years.
So you get what I'm saying. James E. Riley kept saying in interviews that these characters were really dead. I was buying it the whole time the story was taking place. It was the first time any show had gone to those extremes for ratings. I would have stuck with Days if they hadn't copped out making them all alive. It made the entire serial killer storyline a waste of time. All of it was for nothing.
Since you watched Days, what did you think of Marlena getting possessed by Satan? I found the episodes on YouTube and watched nonstop. I wish they would release that entire storyline on DVD one of these Halloween's. It's so creepy and has the gothic style that Dark Shadows has.
Thats why I prefer sitcoms over dramas and soaps, they RARELY (notice I didnt say never) kill off characters.
Yeah, I gave up on soap operas around 2006 or 2007. I watched the last five episodes of both All My Children and Passions just to see how they ended. Even though I gave up on Passions after Josh Ryan Evans died in 2002, I liked that Passions ended it like a finale doing the same exact storylines from day one  All My Children went with a cliffhanger and that was disappointing.
You did??
That sounds like the opposite of what I'd expect from a fan. But,I'm not entirely surprised, as it seems you have some unconventional views or takes on things (and no, I don't mean just because of disagreements we've had ).

Well 80s you gotta understand when a show does a serial killer storyline and the writer goes for interviews saying the characters are really being killed off, it's disrespectful to fans watching something that has no value. The serial killer story never should have happened. All it was back then was a ratings ploy and it worked until they did the cop out. From what I remember ratings dropped and other fans were pissed too because they wasted their time watching it.

I started Days in '97 so I missed the whole Marlena possession story, but heard so much of it from my best friend's mother at the time who filled me in about it and it sounded so out there and over the top I couldn't believe this was on a daytime soap opera.
Is the entire storyline on you tube? If it is i'll definitely give it a look and finally see for myself what all the fuss was about

It's a well known fact that us older people need less sleep. :grr: I never believed it before but i'm now learning that it's actually true. 7 hours is more than enough for me per night.
Long gone are my teen years when I could be lying comatose for 24 hours straight!

You'd think it would be reversed right? That you'd need less sleep as a teen and more when you're old? But it's factual that teens actually do need more sleep and oldies like me need less.
It just seems to go against logic.
'80sSitcoms 04-03-2020, 02:19 AM ^---lol, good point!
OH!
And cfr, I just did something in another thread I think you should know about. It's something that's been coined at this board, and is used occasionally. It's the term "Nancied".
As you know or have seen, Nancy basically became living wallpaper during season 1. So when that happens to a character in any sort of production, when they're relegated to basically background status, we call that "Nancying" them; they "got Nancied".
So if you ever read things like "Nancy got Nancied!" or "They totally Nancied her!", now you'll know!

I think it was mentioned by you or Retro in the thread I made last year titled "They should've rebuilt Edna's Edibles". I remember someone explaining Nancied when I asked and also something about Nancy or one of those girls going to get a taco and never coming back? Or making a taco? It had something to do with tacos I think....or some food.

One of the funniest things discovered here about Nancying was when they later released season 1 individually (instead of as the original "1&2" seasons set), and on the back cover, Nancy is the ONLY CHARACTER cut off from picture---she was on the side, and they totally Nancied her! They actually Nancied Nancy!

What did you think of the possession story? James E. Riley wrote it from what I read. He reused so many details for his soap Passions. I think it was done better on Days though. The background tune is eerie. I'm surprise they were able to get away with destroying a church on TV. That's very sacrilegious. Did any of the religious groups or the annoying moms that protest shows get involved when the story was taking place? On Dark Shadows when that soap aired in the 60's, Lara Parker who played the witch would receive letters from viewers telling her she's going to hell for playing that role. I can only imagine what Deidre received.

I like Kristen's part in the possession story. Marlena is so evil towards her. Wait until you get to the shapeshifting scene. That was awesome. Did you find the channel with the whole episodes from 1995 or the channel with just the clips of Marlena's possession only?
cfr1970 04-03-2020, 10:34 AM

And it's weird because after finally watching "The Girl's School", it was Nancy who was looking to be the main star and who had the first main story. So you'd think she would've been safe right from the start.
I wonder why they'd cut her picture out of season 1 like that. Was her part diminishing as the season went on? It's a shame because I liked her in Girls School.
But at least she got a term coined after her. I'm sure she's just thrilled at that accomplishment!
cfr1970 04-03-2020, 10:35 AM Maybe you're thinking of Cindy and cheese dip?
Was that who it was? I remember someone saying a character went for food and never returned to the series! Did that really happen? Cindy went to fetch some cheese dip and was never seen again?
'80sSitcoms 04-03-2020, 11:54 AM I'll actually stick with a show when my favorite characters are killed off.
Yikes, I can't do that, lol.
What did you think of the possession story?
Well, I sure didn't see it coming!
And the after the fact, I thought that could have been a great vehicle for Frankie on "Another World" since she's so attuned to spirituality. Maybe when she went back to college as an adult in '92 or '93 she could have met some kids "in the occult" and things took a horribly dark turn.
But yeah, that was something else. I've not seen "The Exorcist" (though I've seen both sequels, lol). I don't remember a lot of details, but the way they did Marlena's eyes and that creepy voice were great effects. I am curious how the whole thing even got started, in the story line.
So one night I was watching some of it I'd taped, and my dad walked in from the hallway, and he said, "Is Marlena still possessed?" and I confirmed she indeed was, lol. Now my dad is NOT a soap guy AT. ALL. So for HIM to ask is a HUGE deal!! He tried to pawn it off with an air of "Pssh, can you believe this stuff?" in his tone when he asked "Is Marlena still possessed?" but I could tell he couldn't help but be interested!
I'm surprised they were able to get away with destroying a church on TV. That's very sacrilegious. Did any of the religious groups or the annoying moms that protest shows get involved when the story was taking place?
Holy cow...I would think they had to have. Yeah, conservative religious values destroyed on daytime television, YIKES.
On Dark Shadows when that soap aired in the 60's, Lara Parker who played the witch would receive letters from viewers telling her she's going to hell for playing that role. I can only imagine what Deidre received.
A witch? Oo, nice...I caught the 1991 "Dark Shadows" reboot a few years ago on cable and recorded/watched it, and I was really into that (which starred Joanna Goins, who had recently played Felicia Gallant's niece Lisa Grady on "Another World").
'80sSitcoms 04-03-2020, 12:01 PM And it's weird because after finally watching "The Girl's School", it was Nancy who was looking to be the main star and who had the first main story. So you'd think she would've been safe right from the start.
Right?? I'm sure so did she! I'm sure most DS viewers thought the same if they tuned into the new FOL series, only to be surprised.
I wonder why they'd cut her picture out of season 1 like that.
I think it was just how they wanted to fit the cast photo on the back of the DVD with all the text on the other side of it. Solution? Just shift the pic over until Nancy's out of sight, then voila! Click, save, there's the back of the DVD! lol (Maybe if they were wondering how to fit the whole cast on the back, someone just pointed at her and said "Just 'Nancy' her", lol)
Was her part diminishing as the season went on? It's a shame because I liked her in Girls School.
Pretty much as the season started! She gets one episode she shares the lead with, and that's it. If they hadn't have invented invisible phone boyfriend Roger for her after episode 4, who knows what would have become of her.
But at least she got a term coined after her. I'm sure she's just thrilled at that accomplishment!
She seems to have a good, sharp sense of humor, so I do think she would appreciate that absurdity, lol!
Was that who it was? I remember someone saying a character went for food and never returned to the series! Did that really happen? Cindy went to fetch some cheese dip and was never seen again?
Oh no, Mrs. Garrett politely instructs Cindy to go get the cheese dip in one episode, but she never does---but she comes back! lol (it's only in episode 2).
It's not like Sharlene Frame on AW who was making lasagna for dinner for she, John, Cass, and Frankie, and then answered a mysterious phone call, then said she was "going for ricotta cheese"---and was never seen again! (well, until she returned 2 years later---she was presumed dead in the meantime)
RetroGuy2000 04-03-2020, 02:56 PM And it's weird because after finally watching "The Girl's School", it was Nancy who was looking to be the main star and who had the first main story. So you'd think she would've been safe right from the start.
This is one of the biggest mysteries of the series: Nancy goes from Lead Girl in the pilot, to walking scenery in most of the other episodes, without explanation. Felice, who played Nancy, even went to the producers (specifically Al Burton) to ask where her part went; what happened to her character? She was told they were still working on developing the character... but not much happened in that direction.
So Nancy gets an unseen boyfriend named Roger (much like Vera, Norm's wife on Cheers) who she talks on the phone with, but outside of those brief phone scenes, she only gets a half an episode in which to shine (it's "IQ"). As '80s Sitcoms mentions, Nancy was cut out of the back photo on the S1 DVD back cover, but luckily is still on the front of the DVD. Her scene in "Overachieving" in Tootie's bedroom, where she finally gets some lines, were actually taped, but then are cut in syndication, and usually only appear on the DVDs. Near the end of the first season, it's clear the writers aren't using her: in "Running" (1-11), Nancy is the only girl not mentioned in the discussion of what each girl does when she's upset. In "Molly's Holiday" (1-12), Nancy and Cindy leave partway through the episode. In "Dope" (1-13), Nancy is scripted as not getting into the cool kids' club ("The Group"), and like Cindy and Molly, she isn't in the final scene, where Mrs. Garrett hugs her girls at the end of the season.
There are many scenes in the first season where Nancy is there with the rest of the girls, but she doesn't have any lines. It seems clear after the first four episodes the producers wanted to reduce the number of characters, and Nancy became the first sacrifice. So the beginnings of the Cast Purge are already visible during the first season.
I wonder why they'd cut her picture out of season 1 like that. Was her part diminishing as the season went on? It's a shame because I liked her in Girls School.
Felice was a good actress, and she did a very good job in The Girls' School, but I think NBC execs saw Blair and Tootie in the backdoor pilot and those first four episodes and decided they would be the main focal point. Sue Ann became the third girl. With only 13 episodes that first season, and Blair being moved into Lead Girl position, much of Nancy's role got jettisoned, and she became walking wallpaper. :(
But at least she got a term coined after her. I'm sure she's just thrilled at that accomplishment!
Felice is pretty "sarky" as they call it in the UK, and she doesn't pull punches. In the documentaries, she's never been afraid to speak her mind. She's definitely got a dark sense of humor about it, but Mindy says it best when she says "I think Felice... got a bum deal!"
'80sSitcoms 04-03-2020, 03:11 PM Her scene in "Overachieving" in Tootie's bedroom, where she finally gets some lines, were actually taped, but then are cut in syndication, and usually only appear on the DVDs.
But not on the original Season 1&2 DVD combo. And if you like Nancy, don't get too excited, cfr...the "scene" is just the very beginning of a long scene and she only has one line (which then fell to the cutting room floor, and she pasted it in her scrapbook #darkhumor). But it is in the complete series DVDs, as fans here have confirmed.
Nancy is the only girl not mentioned in the discussion of what each girl does when she's upset.
Well, we're only told what the 4 young girls do: Cindy, Natalie, Tootie, Molly (although you could apparently say Sue Ann slugs whoever's in reach ). But, Nancy is in the scene, and she is specifically asked by Natalie what she does (Nancy is wallpaper so much that even her dormmates don't know what she does when she's upset!), and Nancy all a-fluster changes the subject.
There are many scenes in the first season where Nancy is there with the rest of the girls, but she doesn't have any lines.
The instance of that that always jumps to my mind first is the opening scene in "Running". She eventually slithers into the scene unseen (lol), and maintains her wallpaper status. She is indeed the only girl with zero lines.

Yes, indeed. Another scene that sticks out to me is Nancy in the Tiny Cafeteria, in "Dieting". We know she's dieting to get into her skinny jeans. Yet when everyone's talking about dieting, everyone's focused on Sue Ann, and Nancy's only line is "I don't know."

If I didn't know better i'd think she pissed off one of the producers or something? There seems to be an untold behind the scenes story there. Maybe she didn't get along with the other girls? It's just weird how she looked to be the main girl in that backdoor pilot and then quickly faded.
I can't believe they just saw Blair and Tootie and said "they're better keep them instead." The cynical part of me is wondering if there's much more to it that we don't know.
'80sSitcoms 04-03-2020, 04:14 PM Even worse: she says what she does doesn't matter!

RetroGuy2000 04-03-2020, 04:55 PM If I didn't know better i'd think she pissed off one of the producers or something?
We've definitely explored that idea, here, a bit. It's possible that while she was hanging out with the writers, or in the control room with the producers that she offended someone.
There seems to be an untold behind the scenes story there. Maybe she didn't get along with the other girls?
Felice was very close to Mindy, and is still seen hanging out in photos with Julie Anne. Kim remembered her fondly, in her book. We now have a photo with Felice and her sister Simone in Denny's with Julie Anne, Mindy, Molly, and Julie Pie, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.
It's just weird how she looked to be the main girl in that backdoor pilot and then quickly faded.
It's definitely weird, and repeat viewers notice it.
I can't believe they just saw Blair and Tootie and said "they're better keep them instead." The cynical part of me is wondering if there's much more to it that we don't know.
We will probably never know everything, but the documentaries have provided some partial explanations.
Had the first season been a full 24 episodes, I think we would have seen a lot better balance, with Nancy having a role more frequently, at least in the first half-season. But because the show went on hiatus after just four episodes, was retooled, and then came back many months later, there was no opportunity for Nancy's character to really shine.
RetroGuy2000 04-03-2020, 04:57 PM I don't even remember her "I don't know!"

80s Dude 04-03-2020, 05:02 PM Nancy O. got more screen time in Seasons 2 and 3 in the episodes she is in than in many episodes in Season 1.
cfr1970 04-03-2020, 05:12 PM Does she get enough screen time when the Lost Girls return later in the series? I'm looking forward to that one. I did see it last year during the Decades marathon, but the details are hazy. I remember that Jo connected with one of them towards the end of the episode. (I forgot how though so don't remind me lol.)...I think she kept a secret for her...but i'll wait to see it when it comes around again.

Lowly TV Player Felice to Big TV Producer Burton: "WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CHARACTER?!?"
That sealed her doom!
(half-kidding---it could have, but we don't know)

I can't believe they just saw Blair and Tootie and said "they're better keep them instead." The cynical part of me is wondering if there's much more to it that we don't know.
I don't think so. I think it was just a simple case like Margie Peters said in the new documentary, "It wasn't a case of us saying, 'Oh, we don't like her!'---it was us saying 'We really like themmmm'." It can be just as simple as that, and that's what I prefer.
Now go pour more water in your half empty glass!
It's been sitting there for half a century!!
:D

Yes. Which is crazy. Certainly "Gossip", where she must have had more lines than in "Molly's Holiday" and "Dope" combined!

I don't know how she became possessed either. From what I gathered, it had to do with Stefano and the scrolls he was using to hypnotize Marlena when he would go to her room at night. He was obsessed with getting her and unleashed an evil. There's many scenes of Celeste telling Stefano this so that's why I think he caused it.
I think supernatural stories would get anyone interested in seeing it. Days did a really good job with it. Her floating above the bed, the eyes and voice, her shape shifting, all of it was fascinating to watch. I'm really surprise how much they were able to get away with because it was established Marlena was possessed by Satan who would say "God will not win".
The 91 version is alright but nothing will ever top their original series in the 60's. I have all the DVD sets MPI released. What I love about Dark Shadows that I wished Passions would have done is made the storylines last a certain number of weeks and move onto a new storyline for the characters. Passions dragged everything out for its entire run. Dark Shadows is much better at being the gothic supernatural soap opera than others.
RetroGuy2000 04-03-2020, 06:21 PM Does she get enough screen time when the Lost Girls return later in the series?
Yes. she doesn't get Nancied there.
I'm looking forward to that one.
It's my favorite Season 8 episode. It feels like it really connects with the origins of the show, shedding off layers of the "hip" and "rad" fads the producers had completely embraced in later seasons, in order to tell a meaningful story. No mullet-wearing guest star stunt casting. No pop rock performers with feathered hair staging music videos in their living room. No hype. Just the original characters we'd seen from the very first episode, reminiscing and reliving those scenes just as much as the studio audience. The girls... back together. I get "little chills" just thinking about it! I'm not at all surprised there was a ratings "spike" for that episode.

That one should play next month. I can't wait to see it again. I think it will have a different feel now that i'm watching the show daily and in order rather than a few episodes from the marathon last year. And it will probably play even better next time around after I see the full season 1.

Well I really loved the '91 series, and I wanted to see what the original was all about so I got a "Best of" DVD at Kroger, but I ended up selling after watching 4 or 5 shows. I liked some aspects of it, but it just wasn't doing it for me. :-\
I remember a scene from the '91 series almost giving me chills (or maybe it did, lol). It's at some mansion where there are several people in a room, and one of the characters is listening to another character talk, and she casually glances behind over his shoulder into the mirror on the far wall behind him---AND THERE'S NO REFLECTION.
:eek2:
She was talking to a VAMPIRE!!
I loved that! lol...very effective!
valentina warner 04-03-2020, 07:55 PM I think i'm really in the minority here: but am i the only one who saw BLAIR as the main character right from the beginning in 'The girls school' pilot?

I think the writers saw that too, and decided to swap the girls places.....

If I had saw the pilot before watching the whole series, I wouldn't have expected Blair to be the star. She only had one big scene in the pilot and that was her smoking scene with Mrs. Garrett. Nancy was the star of that episode and I would have thought she would be the star of the first season. Apparently they saw something different with Lisa and changed gears. I think it worked better this way. Blair is a better character than Nancy.

I understand your point of view and i know that NANCY was cast as the main one according to the writers, but to me BLAIR was the main 'focus': probably because she was the girl with the personality and the most interesting one!
NANCY on the other hand was simply a 'nice' girl, but in most stories: the 'bad/rebellious' girl will always be cast as the main one! (it's a classic lol).
Maybe i'm reading too much into it, but 'The girls school' got my attention because of the interaction between BLAIR and MRS G, and she didn't just have a scene but 3:
1.When KIMBERLY introduces everyone, BLAIR ignores MRS G and doesn't shake hands with her.
2.The'cigarette' scene when MRS G finds BLAIR smoking behind the sofa.
3. MR CROCKS comes out of the blues and MRS G takes the cigarette out of BLAIR's hand pretending to be the one smoking.
Those are definitely great scenes, and the one with NANCY crying over her scholarship is rather boring....
Sorry, but that was my point of view.:talk::talk::talk:
To conclude: i'm surely glad BLAIR became the star!

Yep and in that scene she was a spoiled little brat too  With how much fans love Mrs. Garrett, I'm surprise they were fine with Blair telling her in her home housekeepers know their place. Blair was rude to Mrs. Garrett. They were working solely on Nancy having that tight relationship with Mrs. Garrett in the pilot. That was their intention when creating it.

Nancy was the one who was about to be kicked out of school and she and her classmates were upset about it. Blair on the other hand wasn't shown to give a flying fig about it.
In the scene where Molly, Tootie, one of the goldilocks twins (lol) I can't remember her name, and that extra were on the stairs talking about poor Nancy leaving school, Blair was nowhere to be found....(she was probably smoking in a back ally somewhere.)
Blair was the anti-Eastland girl in that first episode--the rebel, while Nancy was the good girl with all the friends. So that makes her the hero to Blair's "villain" so to speak. Not that Blair was evil...but she clearly had a bad streak and was aloof around the other girls, and clearly not "one of the group"

I don't know why I can't keep track of them! Believe me, it's not intentional.
I think after watching all of season 1 i'll forever know their names. :)

The only blonds in the pilot are Blair and Sue Ann, you know which one Blair is. Just remember Cindy (who did not appear in TGS) usually wears her hair in braids and usually wears a sports shirt.
'80sSitcoms 04-04-2020, 12:43 AM I'd say Blair was the villain of the pilot while Nancy was the hero
*ahem*, heroine ;)
As Julia Sugarbaker said once on "Designing Women".

It's their names too. I don't know why I can't remember "Sue Ann" and "Cindy"...I guess because I already know Molly since she's the big star so she's easy to set apart...and Nancy is the dark haired one.
It's just those 2 damn girls and their names....maybe they need spicier names like Kitten and Muffy to make them more memorable.:lol:

Yes but Sue Ann has shorter hair in that and is in a corporate suit, while Cindy becomes a model. Just remember Sue Ann= two first names, country girl, most storylines, eventual business woman. Cindy= braids, tomboy, athletic, eventual model

Ok that seems easy enough. I think once I get through season 1 and pay attention this time, i'll have no problems telling them apart. As I mentioned before, when Antenna TV first began FOL in January, I just kept it playing in the background as white noise while doing other things because I was waiting for the "real" FOL to begin with season 2.
But now that i'm so intrigued by this first season, i'm going to actually watch this time.

BLAIR wasn't a 'blond' yet (her hair was golden light brown): haven't you noticed, how by the seasons, her hair gets blonder and blonder so much that at the end she is the GOLDILOCKS!:lol::lol:
valentina warner 04-04-2020, 03:43 PM Well, Nancy was the one the viewer was rooting for in that pilot. This was the first time i've ever seen it yesterday so you're getting a brand new fresh set of eyes and perspective here on it.

I think you're right cfr1970!
NANCY was clearly the main girl (maybe not the most interesting though) with the financial problems and having to leave school if she couldn't get any scholarship, she had tons of friends and was miss 'popularity' i get that.:D
But on the other hand, i felt that the story also focused on the 'naughty' girl to maybe contrast with the 'nice' girl: BLAIR vs NANCY or BLAIR vs KIMBERLY?:p
It would make sense if you think about it: most stories always have a 'bad/ rebellious' character to clash with the 'good/kind' one, and in most of the cases, the 'evil' and 'good' are the two main ones.;)
For example:
In 'ONCE UPON A TIME', the 'Queen' is the evil character whose story focuses on, as well as her foils and arch enemies 'Emma Swam' and 'Snow white' to compete and fight with, and i could come up with million more examples lol!
So, what i'm trying to say is, the writers clearly had the intention on making BLAIR as the main one too, otherwise why would they focus on her and MRS G and having them interact? (They surely didn't do as much with the rest of the other girls).:talk:
The way i see it (had they not changed the girls story at all between the pilot and season 1), BLAIR would have still be the 'smoker anti Eastland' girl who clashes with the rest of them; NANCY the popular, kind girl and MRS G the housemother who wouldn't take any no nonsense, and try her best to put an order in the 'all girls school': she'd probably take all the cigarettes away from BLAIR and straighten/mould her and even have the CROCK take orders from her and clash with him too!
This is clearly my point of view as an observer cos i'm clearly not the producer on FOL, but i always think that if you write or direct something, every detail means something?
I really hope i'm making myself clear lol!

Yeah I understand what you're saying!
Blair was definitely a main character as well, with Nancy being the intended lead at the start.
I think Blair was originally supposed to be the "rich bitch" but they probably felt that would make viewers hate her or maybe she'd be a bad influence on young viewers with the smoking?...So they made her a lovable rich snob instead and dropped the bitchy part. (Which I would've loved them to have kept!)
You can see it when she says how housekeepers should know their place. The Blair of season 3 would be horrified to hear someone say that. Remember how disgusted she was when her friend in Manhattan (Muffy? Buffy? I forgot her name lol) scolded her maid for going to the dentist?
Blair couldn't believe how she spoke to her and was extra nice to her after that. The Blair of "Girl's School" would've high fived....Binky? (What the hell was her name?!)
So she was originally going to be the opposite of good girl Nancy and the sparring between them could've been fun to watch had they kept that bitchiness of Pilot Blair in there for the rest of the series.
Then when Jo came along, it would've been a totally different dynamic between those two...the rich bitch and the Bronx girl....boy the fur really would've flown there!! :cat::cat:

Wow that was great and you have clearly spoken from the heart cfr1970!
I'd also preferred 'rich bitch rebellious' BLAIR from the pilot than her 'snob rich' from season 2 onward (she was still her old self on season 1).
For me, the way she spoke down on MRS G was hilarious (not to disrespect the feisty red haired) but when she says "in my home housekeeper know their place"
And when MRS G glares at her and answers "and in my home so do little girls! (it was obvious she wasn't going to take any nonsense from the 'rich bitch ha ha ha!) that was a fantastic interaction!
In season 1, BLAIR was still the 'rich bitch' (minus cigarette and guitar) running with the boys, talking down on sweet girls like CINDY and breaking the rules even for good causes: like when she wants to help NAT (but i'm not saying more cos i'm not a SPOILER!!!!)
By season 2 BLAIR had still some of her old 'rebel' in her and you can clearly see that, when she agrees to go to that famous bar 'Chagalla' with JO (who was still new) MRS G then finds out and the first thing she says is:
"BLAIR i want an explanation!" (she was clearly still seeing as the 'rebel' then)
By season 3 it was clear that MRS G had 'worked' on BLAIR, and she became more sympathetic and sensitive: like the example with her rich friend's name (i think it was BRENDA but i'm not 100 % positive):D
Season 4, 5 and 6 are one of my favourites too, cos for me that's the moment when the 5 of them bonded as a 'Peekskill family': MRS G became really their surrogate mother and the 4 of them really doted on her!
Season 7 onward MRS G leaves and there is nothing left, but tears for me!:(
PS: i also would have loved to see BRONX GIRL vs RICH BITCH!:happyface

Blair still had a heart in season 1. She wanted to help Natalie find her real mother. She counciled Molly on her parents divorce (though Molly and Blair didn't appear to be close), she wouldn't allow Tootie to be around drugs.

Wait---now it's coming back to me....She's the one in the barn at the end running from Jason? I think she had a pitchfork or he did and she hung him by a chain in the barn door. I can't believe that was Binky, Dina or whatever her name was LOL.

I just love it when they give each other that 'fake' hug, and JO says:
"Oh my god, i think i just walked into a FARRAH FAWCETT convent!" (all we needed was BOOTSIE!)
:rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:
'80sSitcoms 04-04-2020, 09:42 PM Get outta here! She was in that?! I LOVE the Friday the 13th films and have them all!
You WHAT?? You DO?? EEK!! cfr is SCARY!!
(lol)
Now I think i'll pop it in and have a watch. Antenna TV, which I usually watch is playing an "Alice" marathon all day. puke::barf:
HEY!! Whaddya got against "Alice"??
I can't believe that was Binky, Dina or whatever her name was LOL.
DINA!!
Lorimar Television 04-04-2020, 09:47 PM Wait who is Dina?

By main girl, is she the one who survives all the way to the end? It's no spoiler as i've seen them dozens of times....but had no idea that was Blair's friend Muffy/Buffy/Binky!
Wait---now it's coming back to me....She's the one in the barn at the end running from Jason? I think she had a pitchfork or he did and she hung him by a chain in the barn door. I can't believe that was Binky, Dina or whatever her name was LOL.
Yes exactly that's her: the only survival who was after JASON and hung him by the chain (after he killed all her friends and including her boyfriend).:p
Oh my god i can't believe you're a big H O R R O R fan! Do you have the 'NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST' movies too, by any chance? (i do and that's my next favourite one).
Actually: i wrote a story on the 'Friday the 13th Fanfiction sitetoo hee hee! :D
PS: i really liked the part on 'FRIDAY THE 13TH part 3' when 'DINAH BECKER''s (DANA KIMMELL is her real name) friends bashed her car (after running away from gangsters they met at the local dinner) and they all come after them, hang around the barn to end up killed by JASON!!!!

I have the Nightmare on Elm St dvd collection with the first 4 films. I haven't watched the "Nightmare" films in literally decades so I plan to watch them soon. I bought the collection a couple of years ago and still haven't played them.
I also got the Friday the 13th 8 film collection dvd set. I was gonna pop in the 3rd part with Dina in it, but decided to start from part 1 and go from there. I hate jumping in the middle lol. You have to start from the beginning and go from there.
Part 1 is SO good!! I just finished it and it's just like seeing it the first time again...."Kill her Mommy!!!"....I love Mrs. Vorhees!!
Now i'm thinking of a FOL horror movie where Mrs. G and the girls go up to a cabin for summer vacation....who do you think would make it to the end?
I think it's obvious Jo would be the final girl!!:lol:

Now don't go killing BLAIR!
NIGHTMARE AT THE EASTLAND SCHOOL FOR GIRLS starring:
MRS G as the suspect
TOOTIE as the first victim
NAT as the second victim
JO as the sheriff of the town
BLAIR as the survival of course or the serial killer?:p:p:p (you get to choose)
PS: if you're a fan of MR VORHEES, my story on the fanfiction site is about her....
cfr1970 04-05-2020, 12:22 AM You WHAT?? You DO?? EEK!! cfr is SCARY!!
Of course! You don't?! How can you be an 80's fan and NOT love 1980's era horror? Freddy, Jason & Michael!! FUN!!
HEY!! Whaddya got against "Alice"??
Alice is ok...I was really excited for it to come to Antenna TV after not seeing it literally since it's original run. The first couple of seasons are great, but after that, and especially once Flo departs, it doesn't hold up.
It's weird because the first couple of seasons DO hold up pretty well, but after that it gets bad, and towards the end it just got cartoonish and it's unwatchable.
So when it's on TV now, I just avoid it altogether.

Make Beverly Ann the spiky haired, crazed serial killer instead! That would make sense.
And I would never kill off Blair, no way. Jo comes to Blair's defense just when Beverly Ann comes...in a Mrs. Garrett face mask which is why Mrs. G was a suspect! YES! It's Beverly in a red poofy wig that's killing them all because she's insanely jealous of her sister!!
Anyway, just when Beverly Ann is about to off Blair, Jo comes to her rescue and takes the ax instead and dies---saving our Blair who then shoots deadly straw wrappers at Beverly and pokes both her eyes out and becomes the final girl to survive! THE END!
'80sSitcoms 04-05-2020, 12:55 AM Wait who is Dina?
Lorsie!! Aren't you reading this thread?? Dina is Blair's snooty New York City friend who wouldn't be caught DEAD making tuna fish and who rails at housekeepers for going to the dentist for hurt teeth!!
You know, the girl who would KILL, we're talking MURDER 1, for that haaaiiiirrrr!"
"Beckerrrrrr!"
"Warnerrrrr!"
NOW do you know??

NO! I like "Sesame Street" and "Mr. Rogers" and "Reading Rainbow" and "The Facts of Life"!
Actually I don't know I've seen a whole FXIII movie---maybe the first one on cable?? I did watch some of it a few years ago. Saw a little Freddy back in the day, but NO THANK YOU. And never saw a "Halloween" movie until I tried the first one a few years ago on cable.
Really though, I like classic atmospheric scary/spooky, but not "gore".
Alice is ok...
You bet your grits it is!! (see what I did there?? )
With Florence Jean Castleberry, the 5-year jitterbug champ at the VW hall?? It's WAY more than "ok"! :D

When I was little I actually thought the gore was real. Like when Jason's mother's head went flying off her body I thought they actually did that to her and maybe she was in prison on death row and they took her out to make the film and really lopped off her head instead of giving her the electric chair.
The things a 10 year old will believe! And yes, I saw Fri the 13th when I was 10!

RetroGuy2000 04-05-2020, 01:30 AM I'm with '80s Sitcoms on horror movies. I can't watch them. For me, it's because I have too vivid of an imagination. I watch a scary movie, then I have to get into my car at night. NOPE. No thank you!

The only thing I can't do with those films is watch them right before bed...otherwise, i'm fine. But they have to have a story...if it's just gore for the sake of it, then that's not for me. See? I at least have standards!

Me too. Those are great even with zero gore because all the horror is in your mind. I caught an old flick on the Movies! channel for the first time the other week.
It was an old Audrey Hepburn flick called "Wait Until Dark" where a blind woman is terrorized in her apartment. It was so good and suspenseful with zero gore. I loved it.
'80sSitcoms 04-05-2020, 02:06 AM That line was so stupid but still funny just for it's absurdity and how she delivered it.
It is SUCH an over-the-top line, and I too find it so funny just for the absurdity and her sincere shallow delivery!
And then Blair's fake modest reaction at showing it off!

The problem was they made Vera sometimes seem like she had some developmental problems. But it's sweet that in the later years (post-Flo, unfortunately) she found a boyfriend who became a fiance, and then her husband. :)

Same here!! (Gee, imagine that; 2 very creative guys having ultra vivid imaginations )
The first time I watched "Psycho" at home in college, when I went down the hall to bed I had to run past the dark bathroom, lol...and any time I watch it, when I take a shower, I stay facing the curtain the whole time!
(cfr sounds like the kinda guy who'd love to pull a "horror prank" on ya as a roommate! lol)
'80sSitcoms 04-05-2020, 02:11 AM Oh yes the "turn blue" friend
Tonight I watched the final show of "The Carol Burnett Show", its 11-year closer, and in the last "Family" sketch of Mama and Eunice, Eunice said the phrase "Turn green" in passing. I wonder what came first, "Turn green", or "Turn blue"? Maybe part of the humor on the FOL episode is that the bubble-headed spoiled princesses got it wrong? Or maybe Eunice said "green" just for the H-E-double Cindy Webster hockey sticks of it? lol

You didn't see Psycho till you were in college? Wow...I remember being a kid and my Mom calling for us to come into the living room because Psycho was on! Now i'm not sure if that's good or bad thing.
No, I wouldn't pull something horrible like that on somebody. That's just too evil.

She would?? Holy cow! lol
Janet Leigh said she had no problem doing "the scene" at all, but after she saw the completed film, that's when it did its psychological effect on her---after that, she says she would ONLY take a shower with the curtain pulled open, and facing the door the whole time.
I'm like, what about the floor?? You just got it totally SOAKED??

I know what you mean. For me, one of the best psychological thrillers is the 1991 film Sleeping with the Enemy, with Julia Roberts. It was set near an area where I lived at the time, so that was cool as well.

 I understand! As a teenager, I made the mistake of watching one of those "Chuckie" films (Child's Play), and there was this closet scene that really got to me. For years, I couldn't stand half-opened closet doors after that!

Was she serious?! It's kind of funny the film scared her that much when she was the actress who made the scene. Wow...and yeah what about the damn floor? She didn't care that she soaked her bathroom every time she showered? Makes me think she was just giving a load of BS for the fans to stay scared of taking a shower.
And speaking of Psycho, that granny avatar with the bun hair kind of looks like Norman Bate's mother!:lol::lol:
'80sSitcoms 04-05-2020, 03:08 AM Was she serious?! It's kind of funny the film scared her that much when she was the actress who made the scene. Wow...
Well, it was hard work doing the scene with all those technical details about it, and director and crew stopping and starting, etc., so I can imagine it being a whole 'nother thing when you see it played out in the movie, and seeing how REAL the expeirence seems---eek!
[QUOTE=cfr1970;5710813]and yeah what about the damn floor? She didn't care that she soaked her bathroom every time she showered?

There's that 50-year-old half-empty glass!
Well, I think she said she took baths whenever possible, and that if she HAD to take a shower, that's how she'd do it; she wrote a book about her experience making the film, and it's a very interesting read.

Actually, i'm really liking her in season 6. I just can't stand her in the seasons prior. Especially the pigtail years. If she stays consistent for seasons 7 thru 9, I may have to move her up a peg and move Jo down to 4th favorite.

I don't know where she'll be in season 1 since I need to sit down and actually watch it next time around. When it aired in January, I didn't pay enough attention to it.
But I do know she definitely won't be last. I think I have that spot already reserved for one of them before I even watch it.:lol::lol:

I know. I'm only going by what all of you have told me about her right here. I will wait to fully watch the 1st season and then take that Lost Girl poll and rank em honestly.
But what i've seen of "The Girl's School" pretty much confirms where she'll wind up. Hey, but it moves Natalie up so there's the silver lining!
See? I can see the glass half full too!

I wouldnt rank Natalie above Molly, atleast not early on. Her acting was very unpolished at first

But are we ranking the characters or the actresses? Or both?
You say you wouldn't put Natalie above Molly, but then cite Mindy's acting playing Natalie. So i'm not sure how to rank em now!

Lorimar is right about NATALIE, cfr1970: in season 1 she was very 'unpolished' and all the LOST GIRLS were better actresses than her:wave::wave:

That's what i've been saying for a while now, but not everyone agreed with me. In the first few seasons, Mindy Cohn always said her lines like she's about to break out laughing...even when it was supposed to be her being mad or sad. It was so distracting. So yeah, she was very "unpolished"...(nice diplomatic way to put it lol).
It wasn't until season 6 that she improved a lot and by the end of season 6 I really like her. But 1-5 seasons she's...."unpolished".

Nope! Sorry cfr1970 but no: NATALIE improved a lot by season 2 and was nothing compared to season 1 (try watching it, and please pay ATTENTION this time)!:nonono::nonono::nonono:

By season 2 Mindy Cohn was still prominently smiling and holding back laughter when saying serious lines. It's there and I have paid attention to all the seasons except for season 1. We'll just have to disagree on this! :)

I don't see that with "serious lines". But with jokes, yes. That's because she's the class clown of the girls. Clowns make jokes and smile/laugh at their humor That's what clowns do! 🤡
cfr, if you watch the Reelz documentary sometime, you'll see their director say that was sometimes written into the scripts that "Natalie enjoys her own humor" when doing a punchline.
I find it interesting that some people find her "cracking up at herself" like it's an unwarranted thing; to me, it has always been how her character is, and is a natural reaction. I've just always felt that since I first saw the show. :)
And look at you not paying attention to season 1---now you're having to go through 8 whole seasons just to get back to it again!

With a joke or a punchline it's perfectly ok and I get that she's the clown. But when it's called for Natalie to shoot out an insult or a serious line, the smile comes and you can see Mindy trying to suppress it because she's not supposed to.
One episode is the Slam Book one where she's mad at Blair for revealing her crush on the guy and she's all like "This is war!" towards Blair...and Mindy is trying hard not to smile or laugh. Natalie is supposed to be pissed off and Mindy is laughing while acting that.
It wasn't until after her character's Dad died that her acting improved and she stopped the smile/laughing during serious dialogue.

I think you will notice a huge difference in early season 1. Mindy was very poor at acting especially the 1979 episodes, she improved a lot by season 2 from this.

Maybe she improved from season 1 to season 2, but I think Mindy made a huge jump in her acting by season 6. So far it's my favorite season, with the exception of "Gone With the Wind" and "Taking a Chance on Love", which are sadly both 2 parters. :(
I'm really looking forward to season 7 now even though I know this is where things start to get murky.

What the hell?! I've already explained my reasoning before but i'll clarify it again. For the longest time, i've always felt FOL really began in season 2 with the arrival of Jo. Even other fans here have said they understood that.
Season 1 only consists of 13 episodes and for many viewers, can be easily disregarded since many of that cast is cut from the main cast for the next 8 seasons afterwards.
That's been my feelings for years and years so when FOL premiered in January I had it on, but was disinterested in it because I was eagerly waiting for season 2 to begin. I'm not the big season 1 fanatic that many here are. (not an insult, fanatic in my context simply means extra enthusiasm for that particular season.)
I've since said I plan to really watch that season the next time it plays again. So the insults from both of you are baffling and also undeserved! :(:(

Aww I don’t think they were being serious but were just goofing on you. It’s ok if you don’t like season 1, there are many members who agree with you and some who won’t.

No no no, this is where you're misunderstanding what I meant. Ok apology accepted. But you were basically saying my opinion on anything FOL related doesn't count since I didn't focus on season 1 and played it "in the background".
Personally, I believe even if some fans only do care to watch and prefer seasons 2 through 8 with the core four, that should be ok and their opinions should matter just just as much as all fans.
I think it was Christopher who made the observation that some seasons feel like watching a whole different show since they're broken up by Eastland, the Cafeteria, Edna's Edibles, and Over Our Heads. And there's naturally going to be people who prefer some over the other. :)
And about playing it as "background noise" and to "just play music" as valentina said---I keep my TV on all day long set to Antenna TV mainly for the benefit of my bird because he's alone and that gives him some company.
I'm hardly ever sitting down in front of the TV watching it but going about my day and maybe glancing at it here and there while the classic sitcoms play. I even leave it on when I go out for him to have company.
So I DO actually leave the TV on like music in the background. I've seen all those classics so many times, that it is nice "background noise" to keep on throughout the day. :)
This is how it was when season 1 played in January. But when they got to the flood episode, I thought "Well this one looks interesting" so I sat down to fully watch it. But most of the day I hardly pay any attention to the TV playing. I guess i'm the only one who does that?

I think she's mad at me because I made a post scolding Blair for reverting back to her Bootsie ways in the last couple of episodes that Antenna TV played. I think the writers are being very inconsistent with her character this season and it's sad to watch.
Oh well. I love Blair but when she reverts back to acting like Boots i'm going to call her out on it!

Yes all is well. I understand it can be difficult to see the humor conveyed in type form sometimes. No worries!:wave:
And i'm not upset with Blair, just the writers for not being consistent with the character. It's not her fault since she's just saying what's being written for her...it's the writers who are out to lunch there.
As long as Blair never says she'd commit "murder one" for someone's hair, she's ok with me.

MRS G's interview was the greatest, and it was heartbreaking when she said what will she do when 'her girls' leave (ironically she'll be the one leaving):(
And yes, the end when MRS G helps BLAIR put on her coat and touches her cheek briefly is my favourite!;)
PS: i also loved TOOTIE's interview (especially the part when she says that MRS G was a combination of 'mother, friend, snoop, guardian')
It's a very bittersweet episode indeed, because it's the only one where you see them doing things together, as a real family.....:(:(:(

I liked that they did some of the interviews outside. It was nice seeing the Eastland and Langley "grounds" outside of the studio. And sad they walled in Eastland grounds after Natalie's attempted rape. I never knew that part. :(
