Today on Antenna they showed a Season 1 episode and then a season 5 episode, as part of the April Fools themed shows.

Season 5 Ann Marie is totally different from Seasons 1 thru 4 A.M. It's more than the hairdo change losing the bangs. She has that "mod" 70s style/look, sans bra, and her makeup is heavier, giving her face a totally different look. Has anyone else noticed the change was this major?

All the characters look different. The guys and their longer hair, and Jerry with his foot wide tie.

I recorded the season 5 episode "Super Reporter" today from Antenna and they showed the tag scene at the end that's deleted on the DVD from Shout Factory.

A few weeks ago I also recorded the season 4 episode "The Night They Raided Daddy's" because I suspect there's something missing from that episode also on the Shout DVD. I haven't checked this airing yet to compare it with the DVD but I plan to do it soon.

Had I remembered which one it was, I would have recorded it, too. I'll get it next time around.

Please let us know what you find out about the S4 ep.

I really liked her look in season 5. You could see more of Marlo's face and she is so beautiful. I read that Marlo and Phil are celebrating 40 years of marriage. Congratulations to them.

Agreed. I particularly like her hair, sans bangs. Really beautiful. Also the 70s fashions looked really good on her.

Yep, congrats!

Season 5 of That Girl does have a different feel to it, I think they were attempting to update the series for the 1970's. The theme song was given lyrics, Ann's appearance changed, etc.

I checked the season 4 episode The Night They Raided Daddy's, and it appears to be complete on the DVD, 23:35 seems to be the correct run time so I guess when the episode was made it just ran a little shorter than usual.

But I'm glad I recorded the Super Reporter episode today since Antenna TV showed the ending/tag scene that's missing on the DVD.

I'm guessing the missing tag scene for Super-Don (my shortened name) on the DVDs is something that was never missing, just a flat-out error in mastering, that of course will never be corrected, since Shout has headed in a weird, new direction (IMO).

The 23:35 time seems as strange as some of the S3's of LITB. Are you comparing it to the Antenna episode? I would assume the DVD would have more than Antenna.

I watched the DVD episode then watched the Antenna airing and I didn't notice any difference between the two. The episode is about 22 minutes on Antenna so it is time compressed.

Those shorter season 3 episodes of LITB remain a mystery, I'm starting to believe that the majority of those are complete but wouldn't be surprised either if some are edited.

I've always liked the way girls looked in the '70''s with long straight hair parted in the middle But I guess I am just too used to Ann Marie with bangs to like it. I preferred her bangs and hair that curled at the end. It was cute. But for other girls, long hair parted in middle, it's great!

Also last week I saw an episode of Joey Bishop Show that looked like it could have been the pilot, as characters all seemed to be being introduced. At any rate what I liked about it was that it was shot in the early '60's, maybe '61 or '62 and it was in beautiful COLOR!! And getting back to why I bring this up, a very young and cute Marlo Thomas IN COLOR was there as Joey's sister also in COLOR was Mrs. Mondello/Florrie (from Real McCoys) it was great to see a vintage early '60's show in color.

It was also great to actually like Joey's character in this early rendition of his show. He was portrayed as a nice guy helping out his family while still struggling. The later shows when he no longer lived at home with family and was now supposed to be a superstar who's ass had to be kissed by all those that surrounded him make me ill. They should have changed the name to Joey & His Lackeys. I really didn't like the changes they made to that show once they turned Joey into a big stahh overnight.

Two things about LITB (apologize, off topic):

1. Other than my pet peeve episode, June's Birthday, the short episodes appear to be complete--no glaring, obvious edits, but a few places where it looks suspicious. All the episodes have great (what I call) continuity--no blatently obvious chops, like you'd see wathcing a season 12 episode of My Three Sons.

2. A trader contact who knows someone who was involved with the production of the LITB DVD set (this is a known name but I can't repeat it) says there were a lot of problems with producing that set. And my bet is season 3 was at the center of that, for some reason--but no confirmation on that.

Probably something that we'll never know, but it is very strange that virtually all episodes are 25+ minutes, except a handful of episodes from season 3.

There are 3 or 4 episodes of Joey from S1 that are in beautiful color! Just like that single episode of Hazel in S1.

Joey was one of the few shows that started in BW, switched to color for 2 seasons, and switched networks and went back to BW (another show like that was Wagon Train).

I also agree about the storyline of S1 of Joey, with the wonderful Madge Blake and the very funny Joe Flynn. But in the color seasons they added annoying managers (the first one of whom didn't get along with King Joey and was summarily dispatched) and a long cadre of annoying guest stars (big mouths like Jan Murray and Buddy Hackett)(only my opinion, so calm down!). I think season 4 changed direction again, and was somewhat better, other than the return to BW.

June's Birthday runs about 26 minutes on the DVD so it should be complete.

One season 3 episode I suspect might be edited is School Sweater. About mid way into the episode Wally says to Ward/June that he and Beaver are going to dig up the gopher in the yard, and he says it in a way that sounds like the gopher was mentioned earlier in the episode, but there is no mention, so I speculate something might be edited from this episode.

Season 3 of Joey Bishop has some great episodes, that's my favorite season. Season 2 is good also but I don't like Guy Marks, I like Corbett Monica better when he takes over after Marks was given the boot. Season 4 is decent overall but the series is starting to run out of steam at this point. Season 1 is my least favorite, I was really excited when Antenna TV picked up the series and started showing the season 1's, some episodes are good but as it turned out I'm not really fond of most of those episodes. I'll have to watch them again and see if my opinion might change.

The Jan Murray episode is in season 4, not a bad episode but not a great one either. Buddy Hackett appears in two episodes, one in season two and the other in season three, neither episode is that good. I agree Buddy Hackett can be annoying.

I couldn't remember which actor was the really annoying one, but yes, the first one made those episodes almost unwatchable for me. So Corbett Monica was OK to me, also.

Mary Treen, the character actress, was a great addition to the show, and got some good zingers in on Joey (and vice versa). Also it was fun to see grown-up Rusty on a few season 4 episodes.

I may be wrong about Jan Murray. All I know is I can't stand Buddy Hackett. Such an annoying idiot.

Mary Treen was good in the series as the family housekeeper. The three episodes with Rusty are good, I enjoy those. I really like Joe Besser in this series, he's zany and the show needed someone like him as a counter balance to Joey's more subdued style of humor.

Probably my favorite episode of the whole series is the season 3 episode with Phil Foster and Leo Durocher, that one is really funny. Another good one from season 3 is Joey The Comedian vs. Larry The Writer, especially the first part of the episode where Joey gradually loses his cool and eventually blows his top, firing his writer Larry, then he fires the housekeeper Hilda, and he even fires his wife and child. LOL, it is classic.

Sometimes Buddy Hackett is funny but overall I'm not really a Buddy Hackett fan either. The two Joey Bishop episodes he's in aren't the greatest episodes which doesn't help matters any. From what I understand, when Buddy Hackett performed his routine in clubs, he was very risque/foul mouthed and used a lot of bad language.

Yes, Besser added a lot to this show. As far as Phil Foster goes, he may have been good in this show, but if he was that loudmouth in Laverne and Shirley, ugh!

Phil Foster is indeed a loudmouth in the Joey Bishop episode he's in, but the script is funny so he doesn't come across as annoying. Everyone has their opinion regarding comedy, you may or may not like the episode, for me it's my top favorite episode. :)

Marlo had said in an interview, that by season 5, Clairol (sponser for the show) allowed her to get rid of the bangs and do a part. Apparently in previous seasons they would not allow it and insisted on her classic "bangs with bubble flip" hairdo.

I recorded the season 5 episode "Super Reporter" today from Antenna and they showed the tag scene at the end that's deleted on the DVD from Shout Factory.

Following up on this post I made from 2020, not only does the "Super Reporter" episode on the season 5 DVD from Shout Factory have the tag scene missing, but there's another scene from earlier in the episode that's missing also. I can only imagine that Shout Factory ended up with an edited for syndication print of this episode, and the error wasn't noticed before the DVD set went into production. My recording of the episode from Antenna TV does include the other missing scene so that's a good thing.

Also, for those who are interested, all 5 seasons of That Girl are currently on Tubi for free viewing. On Tubi, the "Super Reporter" episode is complete/uncut.

Shout! made several mistakes early on; thanks for that update. I think I'll record that one off Antenna TV, too. It's a funny episode.

You're welcome Steve, I agree, Super Reporter is a pretty good episode from season 5.

There's about a half dozen other episodes on the DVD's that have shorter than usual run times, but Super Reporter so far is the only one that I can confirm is edited.

Somebody I know came up with a pretty good reason some shows run shorter, usually by up to a minute. Show sponsors sometimes had mail in offers, contests, or other plugs. These are actually shown on the Ozzie and Harriet DVDs. It's probably the reason Some Leave It To Beaver, and more recently some of the Mayberry RFD episodes are in the 24+ minute range.

The season 3 DVD of Leave It To Beaver is the strange one, with some episodes around 26 minutes and some others around 25 minutes. It's possible that the 25 minute ones are not edited and the network just needed an extra minute at the time for whatever reason.

School Sweater is one 3rd season episode that I suspect might have a little edit in it, but I haven't been able to confirm if it's edited or not.

A commercial this long would chop some time out of an episode --

Thanks for sharing this, that's a 2 1/2 minute commercial and if originally shown during some season 3 episodes of Leave It To Beaver would probably explain why those episodes run a minute shorter than usual on the DVD's.
