After the 1st season the show was ranked 74th out of 79 shows and that's why they retooled the show and only had 4 girls in season 2

I’m sorry. I’m really not trying to stir the pot, but you’re status is “Forum Legend” and you’re honestly claiming to have not known this?

It didn’t have great ratings, true, but it was given a second chance with the hopes it might pull a bigger audience.

But the ratings went up by quite a bit during the summer reruns in 1980.

They did. The show actually entered the top 20 over the summer, once its time slot was changed.

To put this into perspective though, just look at the dates that first season aired---

ep 1--8/24/79
ep2--8/31/79
ep3--9/7/79
ep4--9/14/79

And the next episode didn't air until 3/12/80. Keep in mind, those first 4 episodes were still in summer before the fall TV season even began, so it was naturally hard to find an audience when most people were still outside enjoying their summer vacations rather than back in front of the TV in the evenings.

And when March rolled around, i'm sure most viewers were all like "what the hell is this show with all these screaming girls and why the hell is Mrs. Garrett from Different Strokes living with them all?"

The way those first season weeks were separated between summer and spring would naturally make any new sitcom back then have terrible ratings. Also, and thankfully, back then shows were given more time and patience to find an audience in comparison to today.

It's possible he didn't. Back in the day, he was mainly about Good Times not being a spinoff of Maude and had that discussion on so many boards here  I don't know if he ever posted on this forum before recently. If he's a newer fan of the show, he's probably learning a lot about the show behind the scenes and wants to share.

Forum legend doesn't really hold much value on here. If you go to the Chit Chat Politics board, you'll see a member who only posts news topics post after post in her own threads. She's a Forum Legend because she does that. She's made 16 threads like that and they get closed after a little over 1,000 posts. I don't think that should qualify you a Forum Legend since the only one you're posting for is yourself.

This topic has been discussed a lot here. If you do a search, you'll find many threads of the first season fans trying to justify the bad ratings and give excuses it was doing better in reruns. The first season didn't work. After the retooling, NBC had a show that became a hit and a trend setter for female cast shows. I fall in with the majority of viewers that prefer the show at the start of season two with Mrs. Garrett and her four girls.

Well, it did do better in reruns. I had no idea of that until I saw others posting the research here. I know there's been debates on both sides, but I think it was a combination: It was building a bigger audience in reruns, it was promoted as returning, and after it came back retooled, fans stuck around and more showed up to check it out and jump on board.

I realize my post does make me sound super vegan, lol. Well, I don't "not eat meat", I just basically reduce my red meat, and go for organic options of foods I like when available. For meat I do enjoy turkey, chicken, and fish a lot. Some grocery stores around here have some nice organic choices, plus there are a few health food stores around. :)

Same here! I'm hardly a "vegan" but as I get older, the thought of eating red meat just isn't appetizing anymore. Turkey and chicken are fine, but I just have no desire for red meat anymore. I used to love steaks, but I pass them in the grocery and all that red meat just looks gross now. All I see are dead animal parts.

It's my understanding that that member may be differently-abled. The News posts actually don't make much sense. I did ask her, once, why she was posting those threads, and didn't get much of a response. If it helps her in some way, then it's causing no harm, so I personally don't see a problem with it.

The characters were originally very similar to the girls who were cast: Julie Pie's character (Sue Ann) came from the Midwest, just like her. Julie Anne's character (Cindy) did backflips, while Julie Anne herself was involved in gymnastics. Mindy was a funny girl, much like Natalie. Molly, Laura, and Jennifer were simply named Molly, Laura, and Jennifer.

The character of Blair seems to have been the first girl with a personality different than the actresses'. Lisa read a line kind of snobbily while looking at Julie Pie's posterior, and the writers loved that take, re-writing Blair from the fast-talking Texan girl she had been (which was based on Lisa) into the snobby rich girl from Manhattan, providing for some conflict among the girls. Thus, Julie Pie's butt created the character of Blair Warner!

Jo was also not at all like Nancy McKeon. After seeing Little Darlings, they wanted a Fonzie-type character, and called her Foxy. That was the origin of Jo.

Wow! That's interesting how Blair's character was changed! Was this during a regular rehearsal or her audition? If it was after the audition and the show had started, does that mean we see Blair as the fast talking Texan early on in the series? Or was she the Manhattan snob right from the start? By the time of the DS backdoor pilot, Blair is already a blue-blood snob. However, her Daisy Duke outfit screams "Texas". So it seems she was possibly in the process of evolving during the backdoor pilot.

2005-2007. I know I drove just past there on many occasions, on the 535. It's always sad to see a place you liked working at disappear.

I worked frequently at the old Toontown in Magic Kingdom, and was sad to see that get revamped, though I know almost nothing stays the same at Disney parks. I also worked in a building just off Main Street, in Magic Kingdom, which is now a glassblowing shop. That space still has an octagonal shape, the same shape as when it had an octagonal table in it, which is where I kept my equipment.

I also worked at Disney Feature Animation, on the third floor, doing media work, though the facility was mostly shut down. I hear that that building is now the Star Wars launch bay.

Wow thats so awesome! I used to love Toontown as a kid!

That's really cool! I always wanted to get a p/t Disney job to make extra money but the crazy hours at my f/t job just wouldn't allow it. It sounds like a lot of fun to actually work at Disney! It's sad the closest I ever got was across the street from it. Whenever i'd leave work, i'd wistfully look at that entrance across the street and dream.
They have a really great pet resort on their grounds that I use to board my bird whenever I go away. Being Disney, I trust them completely with my baby.

Wow thats so awesome! I used to love Toontown as a kid!

Who wouldn't? Even as an adult, I LOVED the cartoony, misshapen houses for Mickey and Minnie.

Toontown was great because the big top was air conditioned, meaning it was great to work in, all year round. You couldn't say that about many locations. At that time, the character rooms were the Pooh Room, the Princess Room, the Fab Four room, and four rooms for Mickey. I was a Photopass photographer at the time, and adored working in the Pooh room because the characters were terrific to work with (great to the guests and the photographers), the lines were rarely long, and it was like working in a studio playset. Mickey's rooms were hell.

When Julie Pie taped her FOL/NMMC WDW interview on a spot near the castle, a few years ago, I knew the exact spot on the lawn she was at, having been there 300 times myself. It was a trip back in nostalgia not just for her, but for me as well. Quite the experience watching that video!:lol::lol::lol:

WDW Feature Animation was a dream. Disney Photo Imaging could be great, but was also sometimes a nightmare.

Yeah, they are so good with animals. One of the reasons I loved Animal Kingdom was Disney's great respect for the wildlife.

Disneyland still has a Toontown though. Fab four? I thought it was fab five? Wow what an amazing job you had!

Disney World has a Toontown, now, too. They completely revamped it, because when I worked there, the studio space for the 100 Acre Woods was fine, but the other character areas were sooo overcrowded.

Working in the Mickey rooms was hell, in part because the space was just too crowded. The lines were long, the guests were irritated by the time they got to see Mickey, the photo space wouldn't accommodate a large group, etc. Between the handler, the photographer, Mickey, and the guests, there just were too many people crowded together, and no place for the kids to interact with Mickey. Just "love and shove".

So, it's much improved, I'm sure, for the cast members, but they gutted my happy memories with new character spaces.

It is the "fab five". for part of the time I worked there, they wanted us to call that space the "fab four" because Goofy was scheduled to mostly be at another location. So if the guest got to see Goofy anyway, it was a nice treat, instead of a sad disappointment.

Toontown is now Storybook Circus. They removed Mickey and Minnie's houses, but kept the tents and Goofy's Barnstormer kid coaster. They also moved Dumbo over there and redid the train station to something more permanent.

I'm sure I did that meet Mickey as a kid atleast once, tbh when I was really little I was afraid of chars, and once I reached a certain age I didnt really care about characters. I'd rather go on rides.

For years I worked right across the street from the Disney entrance at the Crossroads Plaza in 535 at the Gooding's Supermarket. (Which is hear is being torn down to make way for the i-4 highway expansion, which is sad.)

Wow! Just like in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"!

From my earliest memory I wanted to get out and see the world! I sometimes think I was born an adult and just waited for my childhood body to grow and catch up with me.:lol:

 I know what you mean...I used to LOVE parades as a kid, but nowadays, who wants the bother? When I was in a Disney park as a teen, if a parade was starting, it meant it was prime time to hit the rides, baby!

Yes, but the inside of the tents is different, now.

Yeah, I was last there in 2011, and it felt so weird, for me.

Yeah, many kids are terrified of the characters. That's actually really common. As a photographer, I had to ask many parents NOT to force their kids to meet a character. The parents wanted a nice photo of their kid with Pluto or whoever, but the child was completely terrified. I told parents many times: let the child see other kids interact with the character, and their fear will gradually fade. Soon, they will want to touch Pluto's fur, too. But you can't just grab the kid's arm and force him/her to stand next to the character. That will only lead to screaming and tears, and ruined photos.

At Disneyland, when I was in second grade, I saw a person's face inside Donald's mouth, and loudly yelled, "Hey, that's not Donald Duck! That's a person in a costume!" Donald shushed me! I was so confused on why everyone wasn't surprised by the sham I had revealed!

Well, I suppose NBC was down in the dumps during this time period and was desperate to make things work. Most of these executives bank on the success of their parent show, have an idea, and expect it to work. Had this show not been on NBC and had not been on during this time in TV, I'm not sure this show would have fared well and would probably have been cancelled after 1 season. It's interesting to think what could have been, but because Charlotte Rae was such a bonafide star, they took a risk on it for season 2. It was really just the perfect timing for a show like this, with Little Darlings coming out in 1980, and the writers picking up on it and drawing it for inspiration. Had these combinations of circumstances not arose, the writers would have not captured lighting in a bottle with the season 2 premiere.

Maybe it also helped that Natalie and Tootie started appearing on DS before season 2 of FOL. Plus tootie appeared on the season 3 premiere of DS a week before the season 2 premiere of FOL.

I only have the season 1 on DS and the only reference on FOL is the episode 'The girls school', so i guess NAT, TOOTIE and BLAIR must have been making guest appearances by season 2 on DS :p:p:p

Nope: BLAIR and KIMBERLY didn't interact at all during the 'Rough housing' episode (KIMBERLY was more like a 'wallpaper').
In fact, the only time they did, was when KIMBERLY introduces MRS G to the girls (on the pilot episode 'The girls school') and rolling her eyes she says "Oh i almost forgot, that's BLAIR!":whatever::whatever::whatever:

Not really. By the time Blair appeared on DS in Kimberly's home, she had spent more than a year with Mrs. Garrett and her "sisters" to start becoming a better person. :)

That's a good way of putting it: BLAIR definitely became a better person after MRS G appeared in her life (the 'feisty red haired lady' surely was a great influence on the spoiled rich girl hee hee hee!):lol::lol:

PS: and her 'sister' JO was also a great foil for the debutante ha ha!
