View Full Version : "You're my LANDLADY!"
cfr1970 03-27-2020, 04:27 PM The Cliff breakup just aired! Never saw this one and it was so GOOD!! :clap
When Mrs. Garrett told Blair she was grounded I lost it! The absurdity of it was hysterical. I may be in the minority here, but I found Blair's landlady shot to Mrs. G to be totally acceptable under the circumstances. I think we've ALL said things like that in our past that we've regretted and it's totally natural. I think Mrs. G understood that too.
But they all knew she had broken up with Cliff and that was obviously the reason for her defiant behavior. In the beginning, they all seemed to not understand that and blasted her unfairly. I found that strange.
I think they all should've given her a little more room and backed off. Sure she should've called when she went to Boston for bagels, but Mrs. G went a little too far with the housemother role there. Especially by grounding her!
She realized this in the end and I loved that final scene where Mrs. G lets Blair know that it's time she's on her own now and doesn't need her mothering anymore, but she's still there if needed. It was like she was letting one of her girls symbolically leave the nest and watch her fly! :)
But Tootie gets a different set of rules haha! I liked that Mrs. G freely admits there are different rules for the 4 of them and Tootie just has to accept that, and it's true. I think Mrs. G really shined in this episode with the realization that 2 of her girls are now adults with their own adult problems. It was bittersweet seeing her letting go.
And Jake McKinnon carries Blair into her room!! LOVED IT!! :happyface
This ranks up there as one of my favorite episodes. Though I wish Lisa Whelchel had taken a page out of Nancy M's acting playbook and pushed out a couple of tears in the final scene. I do love her, but it's true that dramatics aren't her strong suit. Nancy in comparison would've killed that last scene with the waterworks and hand wringing emotions. :crybaby:
Oh and Tootie taking the damn bus all the way to Tarrytown to see a movie was absurd. Peekskill isn't exactly the middle of nowhere and surely has movie theaters. She wouldn't need to go that far to see "The Karate Kid"!
The Elanor Roosevelt one played before this one, and was Andy's first appearance. So far I do like him. I thought he'd annoy me from memory, but he didn't at all in his first appearance here. I found him endearing...though I reserve the right to change my opinion later on!!
FOL-FAN-ITA 03-27-2020, 04:42 PM I think Mrs. Garrett was right. After all, Blair was under her responsibility, she cared about her. But I was surprised that Blair called Edna her landlady when we all know that Mrs. Garrett was more than a friend for the girls, she spent more time with them than their parents did. But I'm glad all was fine at the end of the episode.
Andy was funny, a great addition

I think Mrs. G realized Blair wasn't her "responsibility" anymore. The landlady line from Blair was that realization to her. You could see it on her face after it was said. That's why she went to Blair at the end and admitted she was wrong to ground her.
At 20 years old, Blair is a now a full fledged woman and she's her own responsibility now. Not to say Mrs. G doesn't care anymore, but like she said in the end, she's still there if needed, but Blair's on her own now. I loved it.
She was still wrong not to call and deserved chastising for that just like she did with cousin Geri when she stayed out all night. But grounding was just too out there and I LOL'd when Mrs. G shouted that to her.

It's definitely an interesting one!
When Mrs. Garrett told Blair she was grounded I lost it! The absurdity of it was hysterical.
 Right?? She's not even related to Blair. It's like a friend's grandmother trying to ground you. Blair might as well have said, "I'm 19 years old---can it, granny!" lol
I think they all should've given her a little more room and backed off.
Hard to do that when you've been cooped up 4 girls in a room for 3 years.
Mrs. G went a little too far with the housemother role there. Especially by grounding her!
Yeah, it's like they were trying to remind the audience of Mrs. Garrett's role as an authority figure, but with Blair a grown woman who's no relation, it just doesn't fly, lol.
But Tootie gets a different set of rules haha! I liked that Mrs. G freely admits there are different rules for the 4 of them and Tootie just has to accept that, and it's true. Well if you realize it, ya can't ground 'em, "landlady"! ;)
(and psst, Tootie, those earrings did nothing for you )
And Jake McKinnon carries Blair into her room!! LOVED IT!! :happyface
That's right! This is the Jake episode! I forgot it was coming up! Isn't it amazing what a throwaway thankless part he has here, yet he was one of the biggest stars of all the AW cast from the late '80s until the show's end in '99? Funny, lol.
How funny "Jake" and "Marley/Vicky" are both/all in Bay City!
I do love her, but it's true that dramatics aren't her strong suit. Nancy in comparison would've killed that last scene with the waterworks and hand wringing emotions.
lol, well, everybody handles things differently. :)

Poor Tootie---she made a fool of herself! In public! :o
'80sSitcoms 03-27-2020, 05:07 PM Andy was funny, a great addition
I wouldn't call him a "great" addition by any means. A "fair" addition as a younger boy for the girls and Mrs. G to have around. My opinion, anyway. :)
cfr1970 03-27-2020, 05:15 PM  Right?? She's not even related to Blair. It's like a friend's grandmother trying to ground you. Blair might as well have said, "I'm 19 years old---can it, granny!" lol

Tootie just had to learn for herself how terrible her play was. I wish we had at least a quick scene of her acting in it and completely bombing. It would've been so funny.
I loved seeing Jake here. This was right before he began his AW stint. The episode aired 1/9/85 and Jake first appeared in Bay City a month later.
And Blair was already 20 here! At least according to Mrs. Garrett. In the end she told Tootie that "Blair is 20 and you're 16."

Holy cow! I had no idea it was just a month right before Jake the jerk arrived in Bay City---wow! (I call him that anyway from some of his behavior later on, lol)
And Blair was already 20 here! At least according to Mrs. Garrett. In the end she told Tootie that "Blair is 20 and you're 16."
 Then that's even more of an insult, haha (and post amended, btw).
Oh, if this was '85, then that actually does match up, lol. Blair was 15 in spring '80.

Oh not a jerk for me. I say Jake was the best written daytime soap character ever. Everything he did that was bad, was just a reaction to the crappy things other people did to him first.
And how many soap character have slept with twin sisters AND their mother! (not at the same time of course. EW!!)

Oh, there are times when I absolutely cannot STAND his smug, self-satisfied, hostile, violent self. That said though, I agree he was VERY well-written, and extremely effective! Just in an often negative light for me, lol (the past few months I've binged AW from November 1991 to February 1993---the assisted suicide storyline and the alcoholism storyline from early '93 are very fascinating to see).

Crazy Nicole! I forgot about her! I don't remember an assisted suicide story. I tuned out from 93 to 98. I do remember the alcoholism story...that was Felicia after Lucas died right? LOVED extravagant Felicia Gallant! Another classic soap character. Boy those were the days of GREAT daytime TV!!

 Yup!
I don't remember an assisted suicide story. I tuned out from 93 to 98.
In autumn 1992 Frankie Frame's childhood best friend Christy came to town with her ill husband. Christy fell in love with Frankie's fiance, Cass, and Christy's husband realized it, so she poisoned him and manipulated the situation to look like Frankie (a New Age fanatic) had helped him commit suicide, so Frankie would get jailed and Christy could have Cass all to herself (she didn't count on Cass not being in love with her in return!) So she really became "crazy Christy"!

Yes! She started drinking in late '92, and really lost it in early '93. Some very powerful stuff there. I watched the intervention last night with Rachel, Cass, and Lorna. But she was told about it ahead of time and so "braced" for it---ouch! (and that won Linda Dano the Emmy that year!)

Ok, I saw the alcohol story and remember that. That Christy story is twisted! Kill your hubby and blame the wife of the man you really want. Oh lord, i'm glad I don't remember that one! I'll have to have a look at it on You Tube.
I found them all a couple of years ago and rewatched from '85 up to the end of '92. By then the episodes get too sporadic and not enough to follow the stories. But i'm impressed with the amount they have up there of the early 90's.
(I hope i'm not boring anyone with this....I know this isn't the daytime soap board! I should go see if they got one here of classic daytime soaps.):lol:

And you may know the lady who AW brought on to play Christy: Patti D'Arbanville. Cat Stevens wrote a song about her called "Lady D'Arbanville".

All I know of that name is that she was Don Johnson's wife during the 80's. Is that Christy story up on YT? Last I watched by '93, the episodes started to dwindle...maybe they uploaded a bunch more since.

Hi cfr1970!
I'm glad you finally watched that episode 'Working it out', and i agree with you to an extend: i think that MRS G was so worried about BLAIR's 'abnormal' behaviour that she didn't know what else to do but ground her.
In older times and while the girls were still growing she had more of a firm hand on them, but now that 2 of her girls were young adults, it was harder for her to guide them.
Also, MRS G had grown so attached to the girls that it was hard for her not to treat them as if they were her own 'flesh and blood', which is why i believe she must have felt really hurt at BLAIR choices of words 'Landlady', when we all know how much time she'd spent trying to educate them and teach them all about the facts of life.
And yes, i understand your point of view about BLAIR being to old to be grounded, but i think this episode reflects on the relationship between MRS G and her girls, and how strong the bond was in the 5 years she cared for them.
What makes 'Working it out' so bittersweet as well, is the fact that it is one of the last time we see MRS G act as a 'mother figure' to them: in fact, 'The interview show' is definitely the last one ever we witness the CORE OF 4 and MRS G, together as a family....
PS: i could still feel LISA/ BLAIR hurt inside (she just had invisible tears unlike JO) and i think MRS G did too. I love the ending, when she comes up to her and puts her arms behind her shoulder and says, "I think you've been to hard on yourself... Would you rather live with someone you don't love, and in 10 years time with 2 kids?"
And then BLAIR is so moved she just walks towards the end of the room, TOOTIE burst in and asks "i couldn't stand it any longer! What's the verdict?"
And when BLAIR answers "Tootie is right, i acted like a spoiled brat and i deserve to be punished".
It was a bittersweet moment between MRS G and BLAIR, and i felt sad myself too, because when she tells her that it was time for her to stand on her two feet, what she really meant was as you so nicely wrote, 'letting her leave the nest and fly'....
And i don't think BLAIR was prepared for it: "but i'll make so many mistakes..."
And JO's answer is hilarious "she's got a point there!"
And MRS G's best "we all make mistakes, but that's how we grow..."
Wow! Don't you just love such tender endings!:wave::wave:

Yes I do very much! That ending scene between Mrs. G & Blair was perfect. I think I even noticed Charlotte Rae's eyes well up a little when she was telling Blair it was time to stand on her own. It really was a bittersweet moment in the series, and I think Charlotte Rae felt it too. In a way, this was an ending taking place after 5 years. Anyway, I really loved it and found the whole scene very special and heartfelt.
BUT she still has Tootie to mother for a while and that perked her right back up after the scene was done. I think Natalie is about grown too at this point being a senior so it's really just our baby Tootie that's left needing guidance.
How long is Mrs. G here for? I know her part was reduced in season 6, but what about season 7? I know she flies the coop in season 8 and i'm NOT looking forward to it...I don't want to see her go!! :crybaby:

I know, i was heartbroken when MRS G left: in fact, i was so down i decided NEVER to buy anything past season 6!
She is still here for the whole season 7, but INVISIBLE if you know what i mean?
For me, the best episodes on season 6 are these 3 :
'Working it out' (BLAIR and MRS G's motherly chemistry),
'Gone with the wind' (finally a guy with character for BLAIR) and
'The interview show' (final moment for the 5 of them as a family but i'm not saying anymore SPOILERS oops!)
MRS G please don't go!!!!:(:(:(

There used to be horses all over the Bronx! My grandpa used to show me lots of old b&w pics from the early 1900's of his home where it was all dirt roads with horse and carriages. It was pretty incredible to see.

How funny "Jake" and "Marley/Vicky" are both/all in Bay City!
My teenage daughter loved the feather earrings because they reminded her the feather style from not too long ago. I had to remind her of how silly they looked in 1984.
Jake actually went to As the World Turns' Oakdale in 1999, and Vicky was with him. She died there, though.

No no no!! Just reading that makes me ill. puke:
offtopic:
What that show did to those beloved AW characters was blasphemy. They also killed off Jake later on. But in my head none of it ever happened. It was all a make believe fairy tale and they're all still in Bay City living their lives. As far as i'm concerned, when AW went off the air, everyone in Bay City stayed there and lived happily ever after. And 20 years later that's what I still choose to believe. I don't know why they just didn't have them move back to Bay City instead of murdering them like that. It was terrible writing.
But those soaps had a thing for killing beloved characters. After they spent a full hour showing one of the most loved characters ever die a horribly violent, gruesome death, :rip:Frankie Frame, ratings tanked for AW and never recovered.
Ok off my :soapbox:
'80sSitcoms 03-29-2020, 03:38 AM Move over cfr, I'm standing on your soapbox now! lol
Yes, Frankie is my favorite AW character ever. So imagine how I felt on August 19, 1996! ("the day")
I did hear of the ATWT "refugee home" for AW, which was kind of odd.
I choose to believe someone in Bay City just had a bad dream after some late night nachos, and it's spring 1993. :)
Christopher 03-29-2020, 07:36 AM With how much backstory we got from what led to this, I really wish they had made this the two parter instead of Taking A Chance on Love. In season 5, Blair said no to Cliff's proposal. In this episode we found out she said yes and was getting the ring sized for her finger. I want to know what made her change her mind. There's just so much they could have shown but dropped the ball. I like Working It Out, but I feel there should have been more shown.
As for soap operas crossing over with other soaps ruining characters, don't get me started. I found out General Hospital had one of the characters I liked on All My Children on there awhile ago and totally changed the type of character she was. She took over her twin sisters life and went evil. I'm choosing not to believe that happened.

Writers dropped the ball on that whole Cliff story. I even asked here before Working it Out aired, why on earth is Blair dating guys if she's still supposedly seeing Cliff?
She may have turned down his proposal, but we know she spent her summer with him from the '84 season opener. And the next thing we see is her dating guys and wanting to talk to Jo about her dating problems.
Then why did she just spend the summer with Cliff?! It was all so confusing. I agree we should've seen much more about what led to the breakup. Even audiences were left confused by Blair's behavior in Working it Out. In the extreme state she was in, we should've saw what brought her there. Instead they wrote it all as an afterthought.
A two parter for this one over that stinker "Taking a Chance on Love" would've been so great.
So the ABC soaps were pulling the crossovers too? I guess it was a thing back then with them all. Today I watch none of them. I just gave up on them all...In fact isn't there just a couple of daytime soaps left that's struggling to stay afloat?

Same with me. It'a forever early 90's in Bay City! :)
I was working 2 jobs so had to tune out of AW in the mid 90's, and I missed when Frankie died. But man, it was all over the soap world how fans were OUTRAGED that even I heard about it when it happened and couldn't believe they did that to her. It wasn't until late 97 that I tuned back in and the show was by then limping on it's way out.
They did realize their mistake and brought her back as some lame secretary later on but it obviously wasn't the same. Isn't it ironic? Soaps ALWAYS bring people back from the dead, but they couldn't find a way to do it with one of the most beloved characters ever? Yeah, right. I think AW had an ax to grind with the actress or something.
Anyway, I caught the episode on You Tube a few years ago and it was hard to watch the way they spent the entire HOUR just on killing that poor character. It's like they purposely wanted to stretch out her murder as long and painfully as they could....like I said...they had some kind of ax to grind I bet.

Yup! Let's do lunch at Tops!

Yeah, I first found about it when I was with my best friend at a grocery store, and I picked up one of those soap mags in the checkout isle and leafed through it. Then I saw it, and it hit my gut: it felt like somebody I actually knew was dying (you know how closely attached you can get to soap characters). I was STUNNED.

Yup, "Anne O'Donnell", the new cleaning lady for Cass's office---of course! lol

Yes, it was very hard. Still is.

Oh, not with the actress. It was the women behind the scenes (sorry Molly, this isn't a generalization, it's a fact! lol) New executive producer Jill Farren Phelps was first going to kill Donna, but fans were OUTRAGED and the backlash made her change her mind. So she decided it would be either Paulina or Frankie, and she used a "focus group" to make her decision. They slightly favored Paulina a bit more, so Frankie it was. But then fans found out about that and were again OUTRAGED and campaigned. And the woman who was head writer at the time was determined to get Cass back to his roguish ways (really? a man over 45?). But Phelps was so intimidated by the backlash she asked the writer if she could write Frankie's exist for the possibility that she could return in the future, but the writer wouldn't budge.
And they both gained themselves much longstanding loathing from AW fans.
ANYWAY, to end on a lighter note, I'll call ahead to Tops and make a reservation with Franco. Felicia will greet us as we step off the elevator, and I'll let her know I SPECIFICALLY asked for Table 5, the one over by the balcony doors, and we'll say hi Frankie, Cass, Rachel, Donna, Jake, and all the others as they come and go. :loveya:

I bet they never wrote for anything again after that. You DON'T kill off the most popular characters off your show unless they're leaving anyway. I couldn't imagine what happened to Frankie happening to Donna. OMG the thought of it makes me sick. Donna was so vulnerable it would've made it so much worse to see.
I loved the Tops set--all that pink and green! If table 5 is one of those round booths, i'm there!

I love Tops too! :D
My favorite AW sets are Tops, Cass & Frankie's house (at 88 Long Ridge Road!), and the Cory Mansion! :loveya:
But I'm afraid Table 5 isn't one of the round booths! It's funny how they have one BIG one in the center, and a couple of smaller "two-seater" booths toward the back left, downstage from where the "coat check" is.
valentina warner 03-29-2020, 03:13 PM I agree with all of you guys:
they should definitely have done two parts on 'Working it out' (instead of the BORING episode 'Taking a chance on love': talk about falling asleep on that one boohoo!) and explained more about BLAIR and CLIFF's break up.
All we know, is that she fell out of love with him, but that's it!
Although i still love how caring MRS G was worrying about BLAIR, and acting like a protective 'mother hen'! For me, that's actually the great story about it, to see them all so 'tight' and 'close' like a real family, which is why it really 'ached me'when BLAIR calls MRS G 'LANDLADY! (i was hurting inside for MRS G lol)

And it really made no sense! She just fell out of love?! And didn't know why?! Please! It was too easy a cop out for the writers to just quickly erase Cliff from the show without showing us anything how it happened. (Maybe they originally had a 2 part planned to show all that, but in Nancy M's pay negotiations, she demanded SHE get the two part show instead!)
As for Mrs. G, I really don't think she was hurt by the landlady comment. Look at her face immediately when Blair says it....I think it's Charlotte's great acting, but I don't see hurt registering on her face, but a realization moment, that she's no longer a "housemother" to one of her girls anymore. She even slightly nods her head too. It's a pivotal moment of the whole series in my opinion that she realizes one of them is now a full fledged adult and it's time for her to let go.
Maybe i'm reading too much into it, but I think Charlotte Rae is a wonderful actress and that's what I see on her face after that line was said. I wonder if she was directed to try and show that in her reaction.

I guess you're right: MRS G did nod slightly after BLAIR calls her 'Landlady', and looked kind of thoughtful in a way.
But, i still LOVED the fact that she was acting so motherly towards BLAIR, and knowing that it'd be the last time makes it even more 'bittersweet'....:(:(:(
Fallon97 03-30-2020, 07:09 PM Andy was funny, a great addition
I thought so as well. I liked Andy.
