cfr1970 03-25-2020, 04:14 PM So they're all covering a radio station overnight. It was a kinda weird episode---I didn't get why Jo just didn't play 5 hours of music, especially since Tootie brought all those records. It bordered on slapstick comedy lol.
At least Mrs. Garrett was there the whole time. That was a plus....and I hope Blair never wore her hair up again for the rest of the series. She's beautiful, but the way that puffy hair frames her face is gorgeous, and she just doesn't seem like "Blair" when it's up. I hated it!
Even in the next episode, "Smile" with her hair down, she now puts so much Aqua Net on the sides to keep them 5 inches out from her head that it's hideous. Where's the gorgeous poof and curls that frame her face? I miss it! Toss the Aqua Net in the trash! :(
I like Natalie's boyfriend Brian. I know she winds up with Snake, so I guess he's history soon. I wish they'd have kept him longer and he deflowered her instead.
That was kind of weird too....Natalie thinking her boyfriend doesn't want to hear her feelings. What?! Who thinks like that? "You mean, you want to know how I feel?" I couldn't believe she asked him that---what is she 12?! That's what you DO when you're dating---you share FEELINGS!! How weird. I just didn't get any of that. Natalie usually isn't that stupid.
Anyway, I so far like the season---but it seems to be heading for the shark waters. It's not there yet...but you can see the fin circling in the distance.
I missed the first few minutes---what was the excuse for Jo's absence this time?! And Tootie's braces back on LOL....yes, I know they played them out of order and this was only the 2nd ep. filmed for the season when Nancy was on strike. (You do notice her absence too, so maybe she was right to strike. Without her there, it's just not the same.)

Haha, I never thought of the "just play 5 hours of music" thing.
Poor Tootie though---eek!
...in the next episode, "Smile"...I like Natalie's boyfriend Brian.
I do too! He was such a good guy!

 You're right. Natalie annoys me in this episode because she acts so wrong about the whole thing, and loses the best guy she'd ever dated! :(

Uh-oh, I wonder if The Nancy McKeon Fan Brigade's ears are burning? ;) lol...but really, I think you'd have to say it wouldn't be the same if any of them were gone. After all, they're only 4 girls.

Do we ever see Brian again or was he already given his walking papers after this episode? If so shame. He was perfect for Nat.
I guess you're right...with ANY of the girls missing, it wouldn't feel the same. You can just feel Jo's absence in the entire episode..I guess that's how much of a presence she has---that you really notice when she's gone.
What was the reason this time? Still visiting Mom in the Bronx?
80s Dude 03-25-2020, 05:36 PM So what shows did Nancy M. miss on FOL during the Jo era?
cfr1970 03-25-2020, 05:45 PM So what shows did Nancy M. miss on FOL during the Jo era?
I think only 2. (according to the Wikipedia FOL episode page)
"My Boyfriend's Back" and "Smile"
Underneath the synopsis for "Smile" it says this:
Note: This is Nancy McKeon's second and final absence in the series. This is the second episode filmed for the season.
80s Dude 03-25-2020, 05:49 PM If they had kept Molly around, she would have come to the rescue for the radio station.

There's two scenes covering why music couldn't be played. The first is discussing that one of the record players was broken and the second scene was Victor breaking the other player when he came too for a little bit and then passed out again. That's why they couldn't play music all night. Jo was going to do that though.

Thanks to the wonderful world of editing for commercials, another big piece is yanked out of the puzzle of the story. :(
Christopher 03-25-2020, 06:08 PM What was the reason this time? Still visiting Mom in the Bronx?
Jo's absence isn't discussed in Smile. They don't mention her at all in the episode. If it would have aired in production order with this airing directly after My Boyfriend's Back, fans would have naturally assumed that's where Jo still was.
RetroGuy2000 03-25-2020, 06:13 PM If they had kept Molly around, she would have come to the rescue for the radio station.
Yes! And if they had kept Nancy around, she could have brought in all of her great Donna Summer records.

I know majority of these episodes by heart. I've mentioned before on here I have most likely watched every episode hundreds of times. I have a routine of watching at least 4 episodes every morning because it perks me up to start my day. I never get sick of this show. I think there's a running gag on here if someone needs help identifying an episode, I'm the one to go to  If these episodes you're watching in syndication don't make sense to you, I'll let you know what was cut for commercials :)

Thanks. I'm sure i'll have tons more questions watching these edited episodes until I get the box set. 5-6 minutes snipped from each show can really get you lost.
Do you watch the 4 episodes in order every day or just pop in any dvd at random and play what's on it? I'm like that with All in the Family. I must have seen each episode dozens of times, but I still watch 2 episodes each night right before bed.
I grew up on the show and Archie & Edith remind me of my grandparents so it's comforting to watch. I view in episode order each night and when I reach the end, I start over from the beginning again.
WriterChick78 03-25-2020, 07:34 PM I've done that with Three's Company myself. It's the first sitcom I ever remember watching in my life and I have loved it for 40 years. It always played somewhere on some channel on my lifetime, usually at night, so I developed that habit. Now they moved it too early on Antenna and knocked it down to one episode a day
Not to be contradictory, but they did say that the record player was broken and that Jo couldn't fix it. I, too, watched it today and heard that. I have two questions though: Why didn't they tell us what Jo's teacher thought of her filling the airtime? I was expecting him to come in and praise her and her friends for their creativity under pressure. My second question is this: what college would encourage a student with a full course load to stay up all night without sleep?

Plus she was on the student council, taking photography courses, Shakespeare courses. It's a wonder she had any time to spare working at Edna's Edibles!

It dropped 5 bucks to $80.60 on Amazon so hopefully it'll keep going lower.

I watch in order. Today I just finished season 1. I don't play by discs though. I have the whole set in digital copy on my hard drive that's plugged into my TV. There's so many episodes of The Facts of Life and it's not always the same show. I think this is how I never get bored with it because it changes shifts either every year or every couple of years. I think it does a good job staying fresh until season 9 when it just doesn't seem to feel right anymore.
I grew up on The Facts of Life. I think why I really love this show is because of the friendship the girls have and their need to want to stay in each other's lives. Plus it shows on camera that these women really enjoyed working together. I think it was 80sSitcoms I told this to, you can see in some shows like The Golden Girls and Alice onscreen where performers don't like working with each other. You don't see that on The Facts of Life and instead you see when they get together how much they like the other in real life.

I like Three's Company too. I like the Chrissy seasons the best. Whenever I put it on, I go to those years most of the time. I wish there would have been more Chrissy / Furley seasons than just the one. The Ropers are ok, but I like Furley best and Chrissy over the other two replacements for her.
As for your questions, I don't think the purpose of the story was what the teacher thought of her performance that night. It was more of her taking the class seriously since she was putting other things before it. For the second question, I'm sure they worked around her college schedule in order for her to be able to do that. Maybe they had her do it on a Saturday night since most colleges don't do classes on weekends?

It's easier to watch shows more often when they're not cut and don't have those annoying animated onscreen ads that networks love. I grew up with this show though. It's like a security blanket. As long as I have this show to watch, it'll always keep me happy
Agreed about seeing the cut material you don't see on TV. There's still scenes in the episodes I'm finding that I don't remember in either syndicated version on USA and N@N.
RetroGuy2000 03-25-2020, 10:25 PM Not to be contradictory, but they did say that the record player was broken and that Jo couldn't fix it.
But if Tootie could bring records, why couldn't she have brought her record player? We know they had one. They could easily have disconnected the cable from the old record player and attached it to a back-up. Then they wouldn't have had to talk for five hours.
My second question is this: what college would encourage a student with a full course load to stay up all night without sleep?
Langley, the same school where they use the same classrooms as Eastland!

I think that's more from fans "wanting" to see that on GG or A, so they do. I know with GG fans it's the whole "Bea didn't like Betty" thing (which is blown out of proportion). But Bea was still professional about it. And the character of Dorothy did not suffer fools, lol. I could see some fans saying Nancy didn't really get along with Lisa just because of how their characters are, but of course (luckily) we know that wouldn't be true. But all it takes is a rumor and wanting to see something you think is there.
William Frawley and Vivian Vance HATED each other on "I Love Lucy", yet they were professional in front of the cameras and played their roles how they were written.
I like Three's Company too. I like the Chrissy seasons the best.
Me too, though I don't seek TC to watch out.

I noticed that with different syndicated prints of "The Golden Girls". Very interesting.

Jo was definitely written to dislike Blair in the beginning but they made so many episodes where we see Jo care about Blair. They snap at each other, yes, but in the end they really care about each other. Their friendship in real life really showed onscreen. All their friendships in real life did. That's what makes it special  As for Bea and Betty, the scenes where Dorothy snaps at Rose or hits her on the head, you can see Bea's facial expression where she wishes she could do more than just that to hurt Betty  They're not rumors. Betty went on record proving the rumors Bea didn't like her. What's worst is everyone felt relieved when they got to do The Golden Palace because Bea wasn't there. I'm glad the girls of The Facts of Life didn't have this.
I stopped watching I Love Lucy years ago so I don't remember how they were onscreen. I don't care for Lucy always getting spanked by Ricky just because she wants to do something for herself.
How many minutes are shows in syndication now? They were 20 minutes back in 2000. I remember ION's syndicated versions of Alice were like 18 or 19 minutes I believe. I don't get how syndication can air older sitcoms that ran from 24 to 26 minutes and trim them down to 19 minutes expecting them to make sense. And how many networks have editors doing the trimming that appreciated these classic shows? Or worst, old enough to remember them. God 80s we're getting so old :crybaby: :mumble:

No no, with "rumors" I meant if anyone had started a rumor about Nancy and Lisa, as an example. I know Bea wasn't "fond" of Betty, as Betty puts it. With what's been shared, I think that fits more than "disliked" (I really remember a Larry King interview Betty did).
What's worst is everyone felt relieved when they got to do The Golden Palace because Bea wasn't there. I'm glad the girls of The Facts of Life didn't have this.
Well Bea was sooooo unhappy the last couple of seasons doing GG. So no wonder a change was a relief, lol.

Very true: i always felt that the friendship between JO and BLAIR was deep and real, and if they snapped at each other it's because they really cared for one another.
BLAIR even said, on the episode 'Magnificent obsession' that it wasn't TED's place to tell her that she wasn't 'perfect', in which JO replies "you're right, it's my place!" (Ha ha ha! that shows how she won't let anyone insult 'her princess' but her).
And yes, i believe the core of 4 and CHARLOTTE RAE were close friends in real life! (you can see how much chemistry the 5 of them have on and off screen):wave::wave:

Too bad CHARLOTTE RAE decided to leave the show (i know it was because of healthy reasons) but having a MRS G around the girls would have made it even better: now that they were older, they could have done more stuff with their former housemother, confidante and best friend.:wave::wave:
