I read a couple people like this one a lot? I found it strange, the whole episode filmed in the car gave it a slight claustrophobic feel. I prefer everyone running around on the set.

I liked their singing at the end. That was a lot of fun to watch. I vaguely remember seeing this one as a kid. I see it aired on Halloween of '84. My trick or treating days were behind me and I was still too young to party so i'm sure I was home watching it.

When Tootie swings open the car door to rush to the phone, that whole tray of sodas and food would've splashed to the ground! Yet when she comes back they're all still perfectly standing on the tray!

And then when Jo burns rubber out of the parking lot, they surely would've scattered all over the ground, yet we see a wide shot and the parking apace is perfectly clean. They must've glued those drinks to the tray.:lol:

It was an ok episode made better with the singing scene at the end. And yes, we still did cruising with our cars in the 80's. I grew up in the Bronx like Jo and can attest that we did that into the late 80's. Good times they were!!

With gas prices the way they are today, I doubt the kids do it anymore.

The ep. before it was Tootie breaking up with Jeff. WTH was she doing dating someone in college?! I thought they both were in Eastland together!! Yikes!

And back when Halloween was after the time change, so trick-or-treating was in the dark! (oh, those good ol' days---"Facts" on the air, and trick-or-treating at night!)

Come to think of it, i've been to pretty much all the places the girls went in that show. Bronx, Peekskill, Manhattan...It is probably a reason I relate so much to it.

I'm SO grateful we didn't have those damn things in the 80's and 90's!!

I always assumed Tootie's guy went to school with her. Maybe he did and this was his first year off to college? The breakup was logical imo. No way a guy like that is going to sit around in college waiting on his 15 year old girl to graduate HS.:lol:

I THINK I learned to multi-quote finally?....NOPE! Just previewed and it's still a damn mess...so I just bolded all my replies. Back to copy/paste I guess. Oh well. :wallbang

You'll get there!

I will say though, one way I quote in e-mails is to italicize the part I'm quoting, and "regular text" my reply. If you might try that, it may be a little more "friendly" to read without everything being bolded, lol. :)

But then, I'd still clean up all the [I] tags or [B] tags (like all the [B] ones in this reply), so I dunno, lol.

CFR, since you're going to purchase the FOL DVDs, there definitely two episodes you should see. One is "The Girls' School", which is an episode of Diff'rent Strokes that served as the backdoor pilot. It is not included on the complete FOL DVDs, nor on the season releases. But it's definitely worth seeing. Here it is on Daily Motion (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x536z0v) (sorry no CC, but there might be CC on the first season DS DVD).

The other episode is "The Slumber Party", DS Season 2.

Oh! So it's NOT on the complete FOL series dvd set? Thanks for letting me know. I'm definitely going to get the 1st season of DS just for the "Girl's School" episode. I'll maybe have to get the next season too for "Slumber Party".

I mentioned in another thread earlier I can get season 1 DS for just $7 bucks used incl shipping on Amazon. Valentina here mentioned how good that "Girls School" episode is so for that price, it's well worth getting.

So sorry to hear that you guys, too, have been told to stay home. Stay safe!

We're so glad you've chosen to come here and talk about 1980s TV. It was such an unusual time in pop culture. The music and the television shows were definitely one of the best parts of the 1980s. Coming here is like taking a walk down memory lane! And getting to talk with others who either experienced it, or even those who never experienced it, has been SO fun.

I was born in 1978, like my username suggests, but I remember the 80s VERY well and have very clear memories of those times. I loved NBC shows like Facts, Diff'rent Strokes, Punky Brewster, Silver Spoons... I remember them all. I also remember watching the last few seasons of Three's Company before seeing the whole series in syndication in the early 80s.

Well, then, I'm just glad to chime in to add to the recommendations CFR received for "The Girls' School". You can't get any closer to the roots of FOL than that episode, and it's a shame viewers miss it.

I think a lot of those shows were, like, kids' shows with a wish fulfillment aspect. Who wouldn't want to be whisked away and spoiled by a millionaire? Who wouldn't want to go to a swanky school with a kindly housemother? I distinctly remember wishing I had a kid-sized train like on Silver Spoons!

WriterChick78

I think these kids' shows don't exist on prime time network television anymore because the niche has been replaced by the Disney Channel and Nickolodeon. When I was a kid, I watched Nick a lot and it didn't have sitcoms, just Canadian kids' shows and stuff that was educational. The Disney Channel, which we had to pay for back then, had original movies, cartoons, and memorabilia for Babyboomers, but no kids' sitcoms. Now, and since my 15-year-old was about 4, both channels fill the tween-teen niche. The difference, though, is that the shows from the aughts, 10s, and today, which are specifically-made for children, do not teach lessons or push the envelope in any way to invite further discussion with adults. Facts and it's contemporaries did more to educate my generation and they were supposed to cater to all ages. I guess the change happened these days because of backlash they received over "very special episodes." Well, I'll tell you, I learned more about life from 80s sitcoms and soap operas that I ever did in school.

Yeah, the only sitcom I can think of on Nick was Hey Dude. I'm not sure I'd call You Can't Do That on Television a sitcom. I loved them both, but I could only see them at my grandparents' house (we didn't have cable TV).

The 70 s and 80 s are definitely the best decade in TV and music industry:
From watching 'Little house in the prairie', 'Wonder woman', 'Charlie's angels' to 'Different strokes', 'Facts of life' and 'family ties', TV was really something back then! (unlike today lol)

I loved Family Ties, DS, FOL of course... I only liked the first four seasons of Little House, which began as such a sweet show. After year four, the original characters began to disappear, replaced by new characters I never liked, and the show started to get strange, culminating in the episode where a young girl is raped by a mime. I don't know what drugs the writers were on, but the show lost its way. Complete shark jump.

No joke. (https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2011/08/25/raped-by-a-mime-the-creepiest-episode-of-little-house-on-the-prairie) In fact, for years on the Television Without Pity forum, the Little House forum was called "Ma, Pa, and the Mime that Raped Sylvia", in recognition of the fact that the show got seriously weird in its final years. What had once been a family-friendly show had become a twisted, malignant shadow of its former self.

I suspect so. There's also the episode where Mary's baby is used as a battering ram by Alice Garvey, who dies in the Blind School fire, and the episode where an Ingalls family member dies of an addiction to morphine. All later-season episodes.

I just read the whole thing in that link. It reads like a short horror story. When I got to the end I was shocked it was Irv the blacksmith lol. Really weird and strange episode and definitely NOT what Little House was about.

I do remember using the baby to break the window during the fire (LOL) and when they turned Albert into a strung out junkie. That story was way too modern for the show and I think it ended soon afterwards. And rightfully so.

Yes. Anyone who knows me knows that I do not like it when TV shows change direction, letting go of the original cast members, hiring new actors, and changing the premise of the show. By the end, Little House wasn't even about the original family: only one original cast member was left.

Glad to know I'm not the only one here who remembers other horrific episodes. To this day, I wonder what was going on in Michael Landon's head. What had once been a sweet, gentle little show based on real history had devolved into Law and Order: Special Victims Unit!:lol:

I know: NELLY had a lot more potential than her 'clone' (can't remember her name) and i liked her even though she was a very naughty girl (somehow she kind of reminds me of BLAIR with her snobbish attitude, although she was a lot meaner ha ha ha!) and now come to think of it, her relationship with LAURA was a lot like JO/BLAIR 'frenemies', and in the end they become good friends.:talk::talk::talk: just like on FOL!

The ep. before it was Tootie breaking up with Jeff. WTH was she doing dating someone in college?! I thought they both were in Eastland together!! Yikes!

Jeff was introduced in season 5 as a senior in high school so they did start dating while in high school. I love Tootie and Jeff together. They're the best of season 9 so I don't mind that he's a couple of years older than her.

Cruisin' is funny. I think the purpose of the episode was to showcase the friendship of the main 4 since they were fading Mrs. Garrett out. You can tell season 6 was the beginning for the writers to get fans focused on the main 4 only since Charlotte was wanting out. They were definitely scrambling to get episode ideas to make this happen. A lot of the episodes where it's just the main 4 aren't bad in season 6. After how depressing season 5 was, I like the change in tone that started in season 6. It was more comedy which suited the girls.

Well Natalie's father died in season 5....you can't get more depressing than death. And I think her grief stretched through a couple of episodes.

Very true! A very sad stretch

Okay, so the episode 'A death in the family' was definitely a tragic one and very unnecessary to the show, but it was also the only sad one: the rest of them were rather funny and heartwarming...;)

I wouldn't say it was unnecessary. It was a major fact of life that was inevitable to happen to one of them during the series. Sure it was sad, but I think it was definitely necessary to depict that during the run, otherwise it wouldn't really be true to the whole basis of the show.

I don't think you can call a show the facts of life and not deal with death. They dealt with teen suicide earlier in the series, but until Nat's Dad died, I don't think any of the girls dealt with close family death yet.

Now if Blair, Jo & Tootie's parents dropped dead after Nat's, then it would've been depressing and unnecessary.

Seems Like Old Times wasn't funny and heartwarming. It was depressing because of all the guys Jo was with by this point, he was the one she truly loved.

The Second Time Around had funny moments but it also brought forth reality to a lot of kids whose parents are divorce. Kids who want their parents back together don't end up like that. Charlie telling Jo that the three of them will never be a family again was horrible to hear because that's how it is for kids with divorce parents.

Next Door brought out reality's of how dangerous it is for latchkey kids to be left alone. Not every parent can afford daycare or find someone they trust to watch their kids while they work. I think this episode brought out more fears for single parents than comfort.

There's others but these ones besides Natalie's father dying stand out the most. Oh and the racism episode. That wasn't heartwarming since we learned Tootie's aunt divorced her white husband and they were all happy there was no kids involved. Season 5 had a lot of dark, serious issues.

Whats more: season 5 is the beginning of 'EDNA'S EDIBLES', and the first time we see the girls living under the same roof as MRS G (without any distraction from headmaster lol):talk:

As a glass-half-full guy myself, I agree with this. The change of venue and employment for everyone is really something to focus on.

I suppose you have a point there: it's just that, when i think about SEASON 5, i tend to picture the rather funny episodes i like, such as the ones with KELLY, or the ones where BLAIR wants to join Gamma Gamma vs BOOTSIE, the 'Halloween' one, or the one with the 'Chain letter' which is one of my favourites!

The ones you mentioned about the 'latchkey' kid i found rather boring and it had nothing to do with FOL.... And the one with JO's parents getting divorced was too depressing to watch! (i normally tend to favourite the funny ones lol!):happyface:happyface:happyface

Interesting, I don't remember the Jo's parents episode being "depressing" or hard to watch at all.

As for the latchkey kid "having nothing to do with FOL", well, you could say it showed development of Tootie and how she handles younger children.

I guess 'depressing' is too strong a word for it: i meant maybe a bit 'melancholic' towards the end, when JO's father tells her they'll never be a family again:(

And yes, TOOTIE did show maturity handling the kid;)

The 2nd time around was a recycled plot from Molly's holiday.

So was season 2's "The Secret", in a way.

And "The Second Time Around" would have been a great Cindy vehicle.

In a way, yes. But there are also some significant differences. But Blair's line is definitely reused. I suppose the writers thought no-one would notice.

Yeah, that's what I mean by "in a way"---it's like that whole girls' room scene was reycycled.

That would have been really cool!

Yup, that's what I did in my "reimagining!" lol.
