cfr1970 03-19-2020, 04:08 PM I liked this one and have absolutely zero recollection of it at all. The funniest bit was when Mrs. Garrett walks into the kitchen, gets a face full of flour and just turns around and walks back out.
You can practically read her mind saying "I'm not going to even bother!"
Back at Eastland she'd be like "Girrrrrrrrrls!! What is going ON HERE??!"
But now I guess she's letting them fend for themselves since they're older.
What's interesting is I was watching the layout---there's a bench to the right of the back patio doors with 3 pictures above it, and when you're watching the kitchen set, the entrance at the back of the set shows the same bench and hanging pictures.
So, we know as soon as they turn left from the living room, they're at the back of the kitchen, but the door to the store is on the left side of the stage. By the way it's shown, that door should be at the 4th wall where we're looking in.
Where it is makes no sense according to the layout....that door would be going outside to the street!
Fun episode though. I liked it.....The computer dating one came next and that was just meh.
'80sSitcoms 03-19-2020, 06:31 PM I love how they use Rose's image for the boxes. :)

Could be that, and since she realizes this is their own little "side business" they're in charge of.

Hmm, no, if I'm following you right, the store door would still be toward the left, actually toward the back of the stage, not in the 4th wall (we may have to digitally draw visual aids to share, lol).
Yes, fun episode, but it really bothers me how Natalie takes all of her best friend's money and invests it without even asking first. Sheesh!!

Not the store front door, but the swinging door leading from the kitchen into the store. By the layout being shown, that door would logically be where the 4th wall was while we were watching the pizza episode. It wouldn't be on the left side of the screen, that's where a window to outside would be.
It's hard to describe unless you're watching the scene and reading this at the same time lol.

lol, well I'm picturing it in my head, because I know the show. The way I'm thinking of it, the swinging door should go the left side of the stage (from our viewpoint). I might have to do up a diagram and show later to show you how I mean.
valentina warner 03-19-2020, 07:17 PM I like when JO says (referring the pizza box): "mum, stop looking at me!"

Yes, ideally it should be on the left which is where it was. The swinging door that is.
BUT....in the living room was a bench to the right of the front door in the back along the wall near the back patio doors. You can see that same bench in the entrance when they walked into the kitchen, which leads you to realize that when they made the turn from the LR to kitchen, that's the entrance.
SO...along that layout...the swinging door would be on the opposite wall from the entrance, which is where the camera was for our viewpoint. From that viewpoint, what should've been on the left of the screen was a window to the side street. (I know it sounds complicated!)
UNLESS....they had the same kind of bench in a little hall when they made the turn from LR to the kitchen, and then made ANOTHER left into the kitchen. That would then make the swinging door on the left logical.
'80sSitcoms 03-19-2020, 09:35 PM It is complicated!
I don't understand when you say "a bench to the right of the front door in the back along the wall near the back patio doors". That would make the bench on the right wall, not the back wall. And on the opposite side of the door under the stairs.
cfr1970 03-19-2020, 10:02 PM It is complicated!

Here's a set pic. See those 3 hanging pictures to the left of the front door? Below them is a wooden bench. Now, when the girls walk into the kitchen the entrance is directly opposite from the camera view, which puts it along the back wall of the kitchen stage.
When looking through that entrance into the kitchen from the camera's view, we see part of that same bench and hanging pictures. So that shows that the kitchen entrance is an immediate left off the living room.
So, from the camera's viewpoint, looking directly towards that entrance, to the left of the camera view should be either a window out to the side street or a wall.
But what's there is the swinging door leading into the shop and from the camera's viewpoint, that door would be where the camera is and not the left wall from it's viewpoint.
Here's the pic--
cfr1970 03-19-2020, 10:07 PM I'm explaining it so complicated. The swinging door to the shop from the kitchen should logically be directly opposite from the wall with those 3 pictures by the door, but when inside the kitchen the swinging door is placed along the same wall as the patio doors are making it actually lead outside!
You have to watch that scene I think to get it because I don't think i'm explaining it easy lol.
cfr1970 03-19-2020, 10:39 PM While searching for a set pic, I came across this interesting video. Has anyone seen this before? It looks like claymation lol, but so cool!

'80sSitcoms 03-20-2020, 12:44 AM It has been a little confusing trying to follow all of the language, but I pretty much get what you're saying now, lol. Only:
The swinging door to the shop from the kitchen should logically be directly opposite from the wall with those 3 pictures by the door, but when inside the kitchen the swinging door is placed along the same wall as the patio doors are making it actually lead outside!
I don't think so. When we're in the kitchen, isn't the bench wall at the very back wall facing toward us? If so, when in the kitchen, the swinging door is in the left wall. So they're not "facing each other." I'm thinking if you're sitting on that bench, you get up, walk past the patio doors on your right side, and you're entering the kitchen from the back. Okay, But the swinging door is not in front of you; that's where the audience is. You have to turn to your right to go through the swinging door.
Right??
Which puts you in the right-hand side yard.
They really didn't think this through when designing the kitchen set!

YES! EXACTLY!! That swinging door IS opposite from the bench wall. Look at it this way. The bench wall is the right side of the house and the swinging door is the left side of the house, therefore facing each other.
Now, the camera is standing where that swinging door SHOULD be on that left side because it directly faces that right bench wall through the kitchen entrance while filming.
So...by doing that there should be NO visible swinging door to the shop becasue the camera is filming along that wall. But they placed the door to the wall on it's left which logically puts it along the back wall to the side street.
I'm thinking if you're sitting on that bench, you get up, walk past the patio doors on your right side, and you're entering the kitchen from the back. Okay, But the swinging door is not in front of you; that's where the audience is. You have to turn to your right to go through the swinging door
But in the show's universe there is no audience lol. When you'd get up from that bench, you would walk straight into the kitchen, and if you kept walking straight, you'd go through the swinging door into the shop. A straight line from bench wall through kitchen, through swinging door and into shop. Straight line from point A to B.
The kitchen is between the stairs and on the right of the stairs is that bench wall and on the left of the stairs is the swinging door to the shop.
From the camera point of view in the pizza show, it was placed where the swinging door is looking out into the LR to the bench wall, so the swinging door would in no way be to the left of it.
I wish there was a you tube scene of it so I can insert it here so you can see. I know i'm explaining this in such a complicated way! :wallbang
cfr1970 03-20-2020, 01:32 AM They really didn't think this through when designing the kitchen set!
This is the only thing I can find and the shot is terrible. It's a screenshot of a Daily Motion clip of the scene. You can see the bench through the doorway of the kitchen entrance, and the swinging door to the shop is on the left of that stainless steel fridge.
Looking at it now, it has to be a little hallway because it doesn't look like the same bench as I thought. So it now seems when they turn from the LR into the kitchen, there's a small hall there, and then they make ANOTHER turn into the kitchen making the swinging door where it is logical!
I think I solved it LOL! The camera is then in the same position as it would be if it were in front of the stairs. With a little hallway there, it all pieces together now.
'80sSitcoms 03-20-2020, 01:33 AM
Well I appreciate the efforts!
But I don't think you're right. If you see the bench at the back of the kitchen set, the swinging door is a "right turn" from it.
Okay, so I've finally doctored up a diagram to help explain what I mean. So the swinging door basically in the same wall as the patio door--WHICH, by the way, thank you for this whole discussion, because I always thought there was a "secret back door" from the street into the kitchen once they start entering from that little left-hand hidden entrance, but when I started doctoring up my diagram I realized THEY WERE USING THE PATIO DOORS!! I NEVER KNEW!! So thank you for indirectly having me discover that!  WOW! (I'm gonna think about this when I go to bed! LOL!)
Okay, so, my diagram: See, the "large mapping" is how the building exists according to the kitchen having been introduced.
But, it's impossible! Because when you go through the swinging door into the shop, you turn LEFT to go into the living room---which is the "small mapping": where the living room would be if you go by the shop's rules, not by the kitchen's rules. Does that make sense??

:horse:
cfr1970 03-20-2020, 01:41 AM Makes sense! How did you make that diagram? That's really cool! But I think I figured it out.
Make a diagram where from the living room, you turn left behind the stairs into the kitchen but there's a small hall there with a door at the end of it. But before the door, you turn LEFT again into the kitchen.
Then as soon as you're in the kitchen, the swinging door is to your right that goes into the store, and to the front of you is the audience (stairs in the FOL universe) and to the left the wall that separates the LR/Kitchen.
I'm so overthinking it, but I think this is the right way. It only works if you place a small hallway behind the kitchen with a door at the end of it to outside.
'80sSitcoms 03-20-2020, 01:42 AM Alright, so never mind my "patio door discovery" theory.
But I still think you're wrong! lol

I used to always think that was a hallway back there too, but I was taking your word for granted because I haven't seen that era since I binged in I think '18.
But NOW, if that's a hallway along the patio doors, they turn left and go into the kitchen. But THAT means the swinging door is now to the LEFT wall of the building, going out onto the street. And that's not right. The swinging door opens out toward us, the audience, the 4th wall, not the street on the left.

Ah I see what you're saying, there's another whole left turn, NOT just "turning left" into the kitchen itself; basically an "L" to go from that damned infamous bench (lol) to get into the kitchen.
Then THAT means because there's that hidden back door they use, that that back wall must stick out further, enough for a door to be placed there to open up . Like, if you go out that hidden back door, you keep walking and the store window will be immediately on your left. It's like the sidewalk has to be extra large wide where that hidden back door is, or else it turns at another "L" so you turn a miniscule left, then right, which is the straightaway past the window.
I'm going to bed! I'm not talking to you for the rest of the week!

YES! YES!! You can even SEE the hidden door in the screen shot I put here. It has the white curtains and where that big Langley frat guy entered from to get his pizzas in the episode. And yes, if you walk out that door the store window would be on the left! It all makes sense now.
What kept confusing me was that damn bench in the LR! I kept thinking it was that we're seeing through the entrance but it's not. It's a hall with another bench.
Anyway, i'm glad it's solved and it all finally makes sense. I once drove myself nuts trying to make sense of the Golden Girls house layout and that's a mystery that will never be solved. At least the FOL house has been solved now and makes sense.
So Mrs. G's bedroom is on top of that kitchen I guess right? Since her BR door is halfway up the stairs to the left.
RetroGuy2000 03-20-2020, 02:28 AM So Mrs. G's bedroom is on top of that kitchen I guess right? Since her BR door is halfway up the stairs to the left.
I don't think it can be, unless:
A) The kitchen ceiling is only 5 feet high (which seems unlikely) or
B) There's a staircase hidden directly behind that door leading up more stairs, likely leading toward the audience/fourth wall.
...this is because the landing is too low. If Mrs. G's room is directly beyond that door, there's no room for the kitchen below it.
RetroGuy2000 03-20-2020, 02:34 AM I once drove myself nuts trying to make sense of the Golden Girls house layout and that's a mystery that will never be solved.
The Golden Girls house layout cannot exist. Blanche's bedroom (the door at the end) seems somewhat feasible, but the bedrooms on the right would be too small, going down that angled hallway and being in the same area as the garage. The bedroom/bathroom on the left would also be tiny, since we see they don't obstruct the beautiful view from the living room windows. (I can draw a diagram, too, if needed).
Lorimar Television 03-20-2020, 03:26 AM I think the kitchen door leads to a hallway that goes behind the stair case toward the sliding door

Yeah, like Retro says, it could be, but with stair modifications (also, notice how they hardly ever notice that cool little doorway halfway up those stairs. A shame.
I think the kitchen door leads to a hallway that goes behind the stair case toward the sliding door
Wait, Lorsie, what's going on with you? FOL has no sliding door, and GG has no stairs! You're mixing up two sitcom sets!!
Also, you guys are forgetting something:
THE DINING ROOM
;)
I mean, there is a dining room, right? Is there a mention in 4 seasons of a dining room back there in a room leading behind the stairs? Or have I just always assumed that's where the dining room is? (if one exists---I mean, after all, it is a house!)

They've specifically mentioned a dining room in that house?! There's absolutely no way for one to be back there anywhere since we know for a fact the back part of the house is along a side street per the store window. There's only room for a kitchen in that area....unless the dining room is where the 4th wall is, in front of the eating table in front of the stairs? That's the only place it could logically go.
RetroGuy2000 03-20-2020, 04:13 PM I think the eating area next to the doors to the store was the dining area. I definitely don't remember a separate room. Because of the shop, there had to be some compromises to the living areas. This included there being no dining room, no front yard, no billiard room, and no secret passage to the conservatory.
'80sSitcoms 03-20-2020, 04:14 PM They've specifically mentioned a dining room in that house?!

Well wait now, I assumed there was, and then I asked if there was any mention of a dining room. I'm not saying there was, but I'm wondering. I mean, every time they talk about having dinner or dinner's ready for guests, etc., they go back there! lol
unless the dining room is where the 4th wall is, in front of the eating table in front of the stairs? That's the only place it could logically go.
Oo, good creative thinking! Kinda like on "Who's the Boss?" --- there's the living room and kitchen, with the "4th wall" being the audience, right? Sort of!  What happens is, the dining room is in front of the kitchen, in the "audience's lap", lol. The dining room is first seen in, like, season 3 or 4 maybe, and they use it in a few episodes now and then. I think they even specifically "added a door" downstage in the living room just for those episodes, since characters use it in one or some of those dining room episodes.
It's very interesting! popcorn:
'80sSitcoms 03-20-2020, 04:17 PM I think the eating area next to the doors to the store was the dining area.

I'm on a Chromebook and just tried copying the [QUOTE] part and adding it to everything, and it just made a whole mess of things lol. I give up. I really do. This site should make it easier to do, like a one click button that does it automatically.
Mama's Family is another great sitcom. I wish they'd bring it to Antenna TV.

A "Chromebook"?? What in gosh-darn all's a "Chromebook"?? :grr:
Just kidding (kinda, lol), I get that it's a "tablet". :typing:
I post here from two good ol'-fashioned PCs (home, work). So maybe it's easier to multi-quote for me?
Anyway, here is A SECOND ATTEMPT at a visual aid, lol.
Just separate out the sections you wanna respond to. Use the "[QUOTE" tags before and after, and voila! That's all you need to do. The "[QUOTE" starter, and the "[/quote" finisher (with the complete brackets as in the below visual aid---if I type those ending brackets here, it will just read me as "quoting").
Now, the numbers by the poster names you're quoting, DO NOT MATTER (I don't know why they're even there). You can just use a person's name and not worry about the #s.
To put ANOTHER POSTER in my multi-quoting, I scroll down to the posts below my response window and copy & paste their thought in my response, then I either type the quote tags putting in their name, OR, I'll copy the previous quote tag I used in my response box, like yours, in this example, paste it, and just type their name over yours. I pasted "[QUOTE=cfr1970 (etc.) from your quote in my response box, and just typed "Lorimar Television" over it. :typing:

Not a tablet. I hate those things lol. All that screen tapping isn't for me. I need an old fashioned keyboard to type on and hear the little clicks of the keys. Chromebook is simply a laptop with Chrome OS--no Windows. They're really cheap too so if it breaks down, easy to replace em.
I tried the multi quote again---just can't do it. The italics is a good idea for simple copy/pasting for old buggers like me.

Oohh, okay. And yes, I love the "clickety-click" of the keys too. :typing: :loveya: (and the separating and C&P-ing is really much more ideal if you have a mouse)

lol, okay...but that was a very nice post! The italics are much "friendlier" than all the bolding. Thanks!
(by the way, I bumped the "Clue" and "Monopoly" threads from years ago for you, since you're so "Facts"-crazy during the quarantine---I thought you might enjoy those, lol)
valentina warner 03-20-2020, 06:05 PM Here's a set pic.
That's a great photo cfr1970! I have always loved the 'EDNA'S EDIBLES' years! (It's the least to say that i was 'devastated' when it burnt down, to be replaced by the 'doomed' 'OVER OUR HEADS'!):D

My wallpaper was a pic of Las Vegas but since my next trip doesn't look to be for a long while due to current times, looking at it every time I closed the internet made me sad so what better picture to make me happy than the FOL living room?! It really is a nice shot of it and I love that set.
Side note about that set....when the Edna's Edibles season started on Antenna TV the other week, when I first saw the living room I was shocked because I KNEW from memory that room was freaking BLUE and not GREEN!
I began to wonder if I imagined it, and did some Googling and saw that it did indeed change to blue after the fire. DUH!! I felt so stupid for not remembering that!
I think I like the green much better though. I don't know why.

Hey that's funny that you mention that, cos i'v also got FOL as wallpaper on my computer: in fact, i downloaded a few pics from MRS G with her girls, but also some of her and BLAIR from the DS episode 'The girl's school' (i couldn't help it cos it's my favourite episode: it's the beginning from FOL lol):happyface
'80sSitcoms 03-20-2020, 08:44 PM I think I like the green much better though. I don't know why.
Because you have great taste; green is the best color. :D
I too always think of it as green, even if they did change it for the Beverly Ann years! lol

Eventually i'll change it to a pic with the girls and Mrs. G. together. Hopefully one of them all on the couch together in the Edna's Edible house.

That's probably why I hate the blue...because it symbolizes the Beverly Ann years. puke:
Also, I think that blue had a much too 80's and dated feel to it while the green was more timeless and gave the house a cozy homey feeling in comparison. And it went much better with all that wood.

I wouldn't hold your breath! Now, the lounge couch, yes, they are all on that for the season 4 opening theme.

Yes it did! I guess they changed it to blue to match the dead grey cat that was Beverly's hair.

Lorimar Television 03-21-2020, 04:13 AM Wait, Lorsie, what's going on with you? FOL has no sliding door, and GG has no stairs! You're mixing up two sitcom sets!!
No stairs? What? https://www.flickr.com/photos/24682838@N05/3418518793/
I'm referring to the glass doors, maybe they don't slide, whatever, but there's clearly a door leading somewhere to the left of those glass doors in this model. I'm thinking theres a hallway behind the staircase that leads down to the kitchen if you take a left, which is what the OP was asking about.

That's exactly what I finally concluded too. That doorway to the left of the glass doors (I call them patio doors) most likely has a hallway that goes straight to a door that leads to the outside side street, but before you reach that door you'd take a left to go into the kitchen.
'80sSitcoms 03-25-2020, 12:04 AM No stairs? What?

Yes Lorsie, they're not "glass doors"; they're "patio doors".
But cfr, no, you have to make TWO lefts! Otherwise the door would go straight onto the street instead of being parallel with it!
Don't make me do another map!!

FOL doesn't have a sliding door, so of course I thought you were talking about GG!

Impressions 04-12-2020, 11:43 PM I liked this episode. I recently rewatched it. The only thing that really frustrates me was that Jo basically said “f*** it” half way into the episode and started buying frozen ingredients and then half a**ed her pizzas. I so wanted her to succeed! But she was at her rope’s end and couldn’t keep up with the demand, so I can see why she did it.
On a side note, I would rather have seen “Mama Rose’s Pizza” succeed Edna’s Edibles than that stupid Over Our Heads gift shop. It’s too bad they didn’t revisit it!

Yeah, a pizza place would have been WAY better. I can see Jo being really involved, and with Mrs. Garrett's culinary background, it would have been a nice fit.
(We've also discussed the possibility of them opening a video store.)
cfr1970 04-13-2020, 12:55 AM A pizza shop would've been a great idea to replace Edna's, and would've made much more sense over that bizarre set up they went with. And instead of being some guy hanging around the shop picking up his mail, George could've been a pizza maker and actually have had a point to being there.

This really would've been great to see and have opened up so many funny story ideas and would've been much more profitable. From what I recall in memory, after the grand opening of Over Our Heads, I don't think they ever had a paying customer in that store again.

Really! The girls normally would've cut their losses after a couple of months seeing they never had customers. But Jo was too enamored with her fish pens to notice, Natalie with her greeting cards (were we supposed to believe she had all those professional cards made by her?!), Blair's one pitiful rack of ugly blouses Tina Turner knockoffs, and Tootie's.....what was Tootie's thing?! Those creepy little dolls?!
And of course, Mrs. G shoved in her little cookie corner & coffee machine.
Oh and that wall of candy underneath the counter. I think it was all the same outdated candy sitting there to rot for years. puke:
