A call comes in and they run. Isn't that more for a regular police station? You'd think detectives would get more cases that either have a history that they've studied - like a string of robberies - or some such.

In 1970’s NYC, yes. The city was in severe financial straits and went years without being able to hire new officers. That’s why Barney often talked about manpower shortages and why the squad often handled petty crimes.

Yup I remember NYC in the 70s and how cash-strapped the city was under Mayor Beame.
