View Full Version : Blair's year 2000 dream

I remember this one! Not the details, but I clearly remember when they were wondering where they'd all be in 2000. It played on Antenna TV, but it had to be edited because I specifically remember a line where someone asks Blair what she thinks she'll be in 2000, and she replies "35!" and whimpers. Was that all in my head or did they cut it out?!

Anyway, I don't think it's such a great episode since the message is pretty much saying that her life isn't fulfilling if she got married. I didn't really care for that. And the other girls didn't seem to have all that fulfilling lives themselves...and they made Tootie kind of a bitch there LOL. Didn't like who she turned out at all!

Jo looked amazing with that hairstyle. I couldn't believe how great she looked...was that a wig or her own hair? It was almost as good as Blair's! I didn't like that they perpetuated the lesbian slant by dressing her as a man and not having her married. I just don't know what the writers were thinking by portraying her questionably like that. (was it some kind of inside joke to them?!)

Natalie was still goofy Natalie and Mrs. Garret was still the same lovable woman too.

BTW---I really liked Cliff and the relationship they had together. In the reunion, was she married to him? I'd like to think so.

Good insight, "Molly"! ;) :)

They did??

Oh surely that was her Nancy hair (i.e., "real", lol). And yes, it did look great!

Molly Parker: "Hey! Wait a minute, cfr1970---are you saying a woman can't dress as a man and be unmarried without it having to send some sort of message??"

;) :p

BTW---I really liked Cliff and the relationship they had together.

Me too, I liked him a lot. :)

I don't think so?? I only saw it when it first aired.

By the way, what were you doing watching the season 3 painting episode recently?? I thought you were moving through the "Edna's Edibles" years?? lol

Antenna TV plays Season 3 M-F for an hour with 2 episodes, but on Sundays they play a different season. It's because the M-F episodes go quicker being 10 episodes a week, while the Sunday airings are only 2 every Sunday. So as time goes by they're way behind for the Sun airings over Weekday ones.

Yeah, Tootie's 2000 self was kind of smug and stuck up and pretty much bragging to everyone about her glamorous life while looking down on Blair. I know it was only a dream, but I was hoping Blair would've slapped her.

Ok, I have to ask...I'm not getting the Molly jokes!

Ok, so she'd probably look down on Blair for being married early and slap me over the head for assuming Jo was gay. Got it.

But still, it would've been nice to have seen future Jo more feminine than just the hairstyle. I seriously think the writers were having a good inside chuckle with her character's ambiguity.

Yes she'd slap you over the head for the Jo thing, lol, but I don't think she'd look down on Blair for marrying early, as long as she felt that's what Blair wanted and it would make her (Blair) truly happy.

Yeah, they definitely kept her style in that style.

Out of all the 'serious' men BLAIR had, i'd say BEN was the best one for her: he was a bit like a male version of JO, and the perfect one to tame BLAIR down a little lol!
You see how he puts her in her place the first time they meet, when she asks him:
"you seem to have a certain taste of woman?"
and he replies,
"when i see a woman my taste, i'll let you know..." Ha ha ha lol!

That's funny. Does he come later in the series or have I already missed him? I don't recall seeing him yet, but I know I missed a couple of episodes here and there in the last few weeks on Antenna TV.

BEN has only 2 part episodes: 'Gone with the wind part 1 + 2' from season 6.
It's really a shame they didn't keep him on: He had a strong personality, was good looking, ambitious and hard working.
In the end, they had another guy like him for BLAIR though (GUY the social worker) but they eventually split up when he says to her he doesn't want to have a family, and you know how important that has always been for BLAIR, as an only child...:(

Then he should be coming up soon in the Antenna TV run....so there's yet another person named Guy that Blair dated or was it the same one from the beginning of the Edna's Edible season? If not, the writers sure seemed to love that name.

Oops sorry! I think i may have gotten the name wrong!
There is a guy (not GUY) who ends up dating BLAIR during season 9 i think? (I can't remember, cos i'v only watched the later seasons on 'YouTube') but there is definitely this social worker (he works with JO) who hates BLAIR at first, but ends up falling in love with her!
A real soap opera man!:lol::lol::lol:

That sounds interesting and definitely will be new to me because I know I tuned out of the whole final season back when it aired so that'll be a lot of fun to watch. Seeing a guy challenge Blair rather than fawn all over her would certainly be different!
Ok that's all I want to know....don't give me any more details because I want to see it as it plays and be surprised lol. But from what you describe, i'm really looking forward to it!!

No, she was married to a guy with the same last name as hers. I like Cliff too. I wish they would have done an episode showing how they broke up in season 6. All we get is the aftermath with them telling us how Blair got to the point of self-loathing over how she hurt him.

I kind of figured when she turned down the proposal and he went to Dallas that that was their unofficial break up, even though they said they'd continue the relationship, I think they both knew that was the end and the audience did too.

I peeked at Wikipedia's list of episodes for Season 6 (I try not to because these middle seasons are new to me) and saw the breakup occurs in the 15th episode of that season. The synopsis says "Blair's rebellious behavior after breaking up with Cliff has everyone questioning her, especially Mrs. Garrett.". Looks to be a good episode.

So I guess the breakup was offscreen or does Cliff make one more appearance?

It's hysterical she eventually married someone with the same last name so she'll always be "Blair Warner"! I just hope she checked that it wasn't a distant relative!

In the 2000 dream episode where Cliff proposes to her she's thrilled that if she says yes, she doesn't have to change any of her monograms. I forgot his last name, but it obviously began with a W.

Season 6 was aired out of order. Working It Out was to air in the beginning of season 6, not the middle. It was the 3rd episode produced that year. Season 6 begins with them still together. It's not until Working It Out that we learn she was engaged to Cliff and was getting the ring sized for her finger. It would have been a great episode if they had shown all of that instead of talking about it.

Cliff makes an appearance in season 6 and comes back again for one episode in season 8. I wish they would have kept him around for Blair to be serious with in the last season. Tootie is the only character who had a satisfying ending IMO. She ends up with her true love which I like.

Cliff's last name is Winfield.

Blair Winfield has a nice ring to it. I agree they should have kept him for Blair to ultimately end up with. I bet they thought it was too early in the series to get the girls seriously involved with one person. But it would've worked with Blair to have had a long engagement while we saw the other 3 dating different people. And then Blair marries in the finale with Mrs. G coming back as her Maid of Honor. That would've been perfect.

It's nice to know at least Tootie gets a satisfying ending. I'm looking forward to seeing that.

Blair always could her Maiden name professionally. Lot of women do it. Even Lisa used her Whelchel maiden name when she was married to her first husband.

Yikes. This sounded so sinister and scary I had to go to the episode page to find out if it already played and I missed it. Turns out that exact episode is playing today on Antenna TV so i'm staying off this thread until after I see it lol. I'm like a child and want to watch it without knowing beforehand.

The episode synopsis for it says: "Eddie, Jo's former boyfriend, returns to rekindle their relationship but harbors a devastating secret."

Sounds interesting!! :)

Also my favorite part of the synopsis: "This is Pamela Segall's final appearance in the series. She was dismissed after this episode."

The 100th episode is Joint Custody. The DVD release shows the promotional the actresses did before the episode thanking all the fans for helping them get to that achievement. NBC aired the show out of order and that's usually how syndication airs the show by.

Wow! I HATED that episode! To hurt Jo that way was so terrible I felt so badly for her at the end and Nancy McKeon's acting was really really great. I was in tears right along with her. I never saw her so devastated.

The writing was just weird. Why the hell would Eddie not tell her about that through all that time? It just made no sense. Also, how he tried to rekindle the relationship still without telling her. It just seemed like something only a creep would do and Eddie was never like that.

But it sure gave Nancy McKeon a meaty emotional performance at the end so I don't hate the episode, just how the writers made Eddie devastate her that way. I think it was too painful...but then again it is called "The Facts of Life"....and they have to "take the bad" too lol.

I guess when I think about it more, it was good to hit one of the girls over the head with some real hardcore heartbreak like that. Now I forever hate Eddie and good riddance to him!

Maybe me met up with Kelly when he left and in her secret lust for Jo, she hooked up with her sloppy seconds and they lived happily ever after together.

Thanks for the correction. The Wikipedia Facts of Life episode page needs to be corrected then, because it notes the 100th episode for "Seems Like Old Times" and "Joint Custody" as 101.

Well it seemed he was all ready to leave the wife to start back up with Jo so all Kelly had to do was tell him to call her "Jo" too. (Which she would've loved in her creepy obsession with Jo. If she can't have her, she can just become her lol) Good riddance to that weirdo.

When Jo pushed her out the front door for the last time, I got the funny feeling Nancy McKeon really enjoyed it. I sure did! It was just so fitting that she was the one to do it.

It should be there. They're both Shout releases. I don't watch the DVDs. I watch the digital copies I made from them. I did use the box set for them because all the discs were in one set for me so it was easy on me  I do have the season 5 DVD set that was released before the box set and I'll be surprise if it's not there.

Right before Joint Custody begins the theme song, Charlotte and the girls are at the table in Edna's Edibles staring at the camera. Charlotte says, "Tonight is our 100th show and all of us at The Facts of Life want to thank you for making it happen." Then Charlotte and the girls say "Thanks!" with Charlotte blowing a kiss to the camera.

That's how NBC aired it. If you look at the production code, Joint Custody was filmed before Seems Like Old Times. I had to do a lot of rearranging once I got all my digital copies made. I have them numbered by the production code to make sense of the stories. Season 6 is what drove me to this. You'll see Tootie without her braces in some episodes and then they're back on with the next episode that was aired. Just like the beginning episodes of season 5 where the door is messed up in the living room because they weren't sure what direction they wanted it open from. They changed it after filming Small But Dangerous but NBC decided to air that episode and Chain Letter after the change.

Do you think it changes the viewing experience to watch it in the order it was filmed over the order aired? Since sitcoms didn't really start having ongoing story arcs till Friends came along, I wouldn't think so since all shows back then had storylines that open/closed in each episode unless it was specifically a "to be continued" episode.

What I find fascinating in that list is in the first season it shows the second episode filmed on 8/28 and aired 8/31, just THREE days later! That's crazy! :shocked

I think they did have ongoing stories back then, though. If you had an EE episode broadcast before Jo and Blair graduated, no one would get it. Or, a OG LG episode in the middle of the Cafeteria Years would make no sense. No, I think between the constantly changing scenarios and resets on FOL, and the fact that they were dealing with growing girls, they DEFINITELY should have aired all episodes in order.

I suppose it must somewhat (I haven't done it yet). For instance, in season 1, it will feel more "natural" to have spring break ("Molly's Holiday") be in the middle of the season, and not almost the end!

Whoa whoa whoa! What sitcoms had you been watching?? lol Back in the '70s there story arcs. Heck, "Maude" had a 5-part Congress story! And "Cheers" had some story arcs. Some shows had kind of more subtle ones, as "Designing Women" followed the meeting, courtship, marriage, and parent-becoming of Charlene & Bill.

Yes, and maybe that explains the feel of there being almost no studio audience there; I wonder if they had to do a "rush" taping or something? No time to find an audience, so pull in whoever you can get to fill a seat? Note this when you watch that episode, "Like Mother, Like Daughter"---the laughter is SO empty and light, it's definitely noticeable that studio is very vacant.

Yup. But cfr, have no fear. Here is a link (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=287307) to the original order in which the "Facts of Life" episodes were taped, lovingly put together by fellow Sitcoms Online member "hch". :)

Thank you for this. This now proves my assumption about season 8. The Facts of Life Down Under was filmed before any episode that year. According to Wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Facts_of_Life_Down_Under), they filmed the movie from June to July in 1986. If hch is accurate, Out of Peekskill was filmed shortly after their trip to Australia. Now I get why they made Out of Peekskill a flashback episode on Mrs. Garrett's departure. If NBC would have aired the season in order with the movie as their season premiere, fans would have wondered who the hell Beverly Ann was and why Mrs. Garrett wasn't there. The writers made Out of Peekskill an explanation for fans.

What I mean by continuing stories is that back in the 70's it was always special episodes that did that by specifically calling then "part 1", "part 2" etc, and having "to be continued" displayed at the bottom of the screen.

I don't think it was until Friends came along that the stories became more soap opera like where it wasn't just the story of the week, but ongoing stories that extended throughout the season like soaps did.

I think Cheers is a good example of being like Friends in doing that without having it be "part 1, 2, etc". In any case, my point is that it wasn't as prevalent back then as it is now and most FOL episodes can be watched separately and out of order without really getting lost and saying "what the hell is happening here?!"

I think the lack of audience in those very early FOL episodes could be attributed to the show being unknown and people had no interest in seeing a sitcom they never heard of. They probably had to pay the studio tour visitors to come inside to watch the taping of all these unknown teen girls.

Which leads me to a short story I love telling!...Back in the summer of 1985 I went to L.A. because I just HAD to see Hollywood. (I was 15 and hopped on a Greyhound Bus cross country from NYC lol)..and no I didn't tell my parents, I just went!

Anyway....I did the NBC studio tour in Burbank and the tour guide stopped us in front of a living room set and told us that is was a new sitcom they were taping for the fall. Nobody cared and we all were like, ok let's move on...where's Johnny Carson?

She said the stars of that show were going to be Betty White, Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan (Betty & Rue were the only names I recognized from Mama's Family. I had no clue or care who or what a Bea Arthur was lol)

Well, the living room set I was standing a few feet away from was the Golden Girls home....had I known then what the hell I was standing live in front of I would have lost it!! But at the time, it was nothing to anyone yet...isn't that funny?

Anyway, I was reminded of that while thinking of the lack of audience for a FOL when it was still too new of a show for people to care. I hope it wasn't too boring! It's one of my favorite memories.

True, but you're still "growing up with the girls" during the school year. I think "Mama's Family" is one of the best examples of "episodes in themselves" for a series. For the most part the episodes are unto themselves each.

The rest of season 1 has a nicely filled audience with good response. :)

No, I wasn't that active with online message boards back in 2011. That was one of the many years I was enjoying my 20's ;) I am glad I have the episodes in production order though. It flows better this way when rewatching the show. And I always wondered why Out of Peekskill had to be a flashback episode instead of a regular episode and this helps explain it now. It also helps explain why Cloris sent the girls letters saying Beverly Ann is on her way before they started filming together. Cloris's first appearance wasn't going to be an introduction. It was going to be like she had been with them for awhile.

The Facts of Life did this with the season 8 finale. When Jo says goodbye, it says "To Be Continued" at the bottom of the screen picking up at the beginning of season 9. Even though season 9 is a mess, their first few episodes are worth watching IMO.

Wow, that is an amazing story! You were there! Holy cow!!

For FOL empty audience, I know it's not the whole season. But for the very first few episodes, they probably couldn't fill a whole audience being no one would know or care what it was enough to sit and watch? I'm just guessing. I would think studio tourists at the time would've rather seen a taping of Threes Company instead.
One of the four girls needs to write a book just about the FOL and share all these goodies with us!

I think you said you're an 80's child? I was a 70's child and I think us 80's teens were a LOT more mature than the teens you see today. a LOT!

Anyway, I saved up my paper route money for months preparing for my trip and told NO ONE! I had absolutely NO plans either when I got out there. I just bought my ticket at the Greyhound and the agent said when's the return? I had no clue and just picked a week from my departure.

So I got on the bus Friday from Manhattan, 3 days on the bus, arrived Monday morning in L.A. and the bus back was the next Friday. So I had 4 days there...and the first day I literally...for over 24 hours just walked around the whole freaking city with my duffle bag.

By day 2 I was SO tired I walked into the Bahia Motel a block away from the NBC studios and asked for a room afraid of being turned down. (I think it was $15 a night lol).

I got the room, paid 3 nights in cash and was so happy! The rest of the week was so much fun now that I had a place to stay. The motel has long since torn down which makes me want to cry. Anyway, thats my story. I was 15 going on 25 lol.

And I did call my Dad....when I got to Phoenix, Arizona and told him where I was and i'll be home next week. I only wish they had Skype back them so I could've seen his face!:lol::lol:

Thanks for not being bored! :)

When I got home, I showed my Dad the pictures I took. There was no way I was getting punished lol. It was already done and nothing he could do about it.

The Feb of that year I flew down to Washington DC for the day because I wanted to see all the free museums along the mall. I was 14 then...so I think by the summer trip, he wasn't surprised any more. I was gonna do what I was gonna do no matter what.

I LOVED traveling and still do to this day. :)

It's nice he was part of Charlotte Rae's 90th birthday. That's sweet, but he's still Looney Clooney to me so he gets no points! Never liked him and find him so smug and arrogant. But that's all the time i'll spend on him.

Can you believe I was a 70's child and am only now "discovering" MTM show? The show premiered when I did lol. They began shooting it in spring of 70 when I was born, but I never cared to watch it because I always thought of it as an "adult" show.
My mom watched it so that right there turned it off for me lol. It was a show for the parents in my eyes. But now that i'm middle age, and after her passing, and then Valerie Harper's, I said to myself, let me see what the whole fuss is about with this damn show.

So I started the dvd's last year and really like it. In fact I like it so much I only watch 2 episodes every Sunday night to make it last longer. I know that sounds silly, but I don't want to zoom through it and have nothing left lol.

Anyway, wrong board for that, but yeah, MTM is another great ensemble show. I'm only starting season 3 now, and at 2/week will be through with it by April 2021.

I hated Beverly Ann's hair so much. Spiky, chopped up and flying in all directions annoyed me. I missed the big wholesome poof of Mrs. G's big red 'do.

By that point in the show, a parent figure wasn't needed anymore and it should've just been the 4 girls on their own.

That doesn't sound silly at all, and I think it's so cool you're doing that, CFR. It's a great way to make something special last, savoring it. I've done the same with other TV shows I loved.

I also never accepted Beverly Ann. She was no replacement for Mrs. G.

Kevin was an anomaly. When he came on, they made it sound like he was going to be the new male cast member. That... *spoiler alert* never happened. It's never explained, and he just disappears into the crowded basement with Kelly, Howard, Miss Mahoney, Mr. Bradley, Mr. Parker, and (later) George, never to be seen or heard from again.

I'll look out for that little Kevin brat now.

I know: MRS G was a lot prettier than BEVERLY ANN too!

And yes, the 4 'young adult' girls could have coped on their own (although it would have been nice to have MRS G around, just to give them the needed advice occasionally lol);)

PS: KEVIN was handsome but his had no personality

That doesn't sound silly at all, and I think it's so cool you're doing that, CFR. It's a great way to make something special last, savoring it. I've done the same with other TV shows I loved.

Ok I just Googled Kevin and saw his pic. I was picturing a kid like Andy....he was a grown guy! Unless he was a love interest for one of the girls, I don't see the point of his existence. But then again Clooney wasn't a love interest either when he came and he stuck around.

He looks a lot like his brother David from Partridge Family. I have absolutely zero memory of him from FOL. Can't wait to see his appearance which should come on soon.

Can you believe I was a 70's child and am only now "discovering" MTM show?

No, I can't! lol

The show premiered when I did lol.

But now that i'm middle age, and after her passing, and then Valerie Harper's, I said to myself, let me see what the whole fuss is about with this damn show.

It took you almost FIVE DECADES to check it out?? WOW! Well---better late than never! (or as Blanche says on "The Golden Girls", "pregnant"!)

So I started the dvd's last year and really like it. In fact I like it so much I only watch 2 episodes every Sunday night to make it last longer. I know that sounds silly, but I don't want to zoom through it and have nothing left lol.

No, that really is cool, but you don't wanna stretch it out too long. We're not getting any younger!

Really? Never? Wow. I mean, of course she's not Mrs. Garrett, but I think it's easier if you think of her as "relieving her" rather than "replacing her". I mean if you're stuck with her (during the show's original run), might as well try to make the best of it, lol.

I agree with cfr1970: BEVERLY ANN was unbearable! A real disease man!:eek::eek:

MTM was always one of those shows I felt was too "mature" and made for adults. The entire cast was over 30 workers and as a child of the 70's, and a teen in the 80's, didn't appeal to me.

I remember the late 90's I caught a few episodes on TV and still, it didn't pique my interest and I was in my late 20's by then.

FF 20 years and it's only now that I felt, "Lemme try this show again" and I bought the 1st season dvd last year and really enjoyed it. I still think it's more an adult show due to the maturity of the characters and adult situations.

The Golden Girls are all obviously older, but they acted like teens lol...so it appealed to ages all across the board.

As for Beverly Ann on FOL, remember this was the mid 80's and no internet where we get 24/7 news about everything. It was like one day Mrs. G was there, and suddenly this spiky haired bitch took her place.

It was jarring when it happened because there was no mass media internet to warn us ahead of time. So that made it more sudden and surprising to see Mrs. G gone without warning.

Maybe i'll like her now on the re-watch now, but my 16 year old self DESPISED her and hated whenever she came on screen!

Same with me, as well as "The Dick Van Dyke Show"---amazing what you learn once you mature, lol

Not to mention the fantastic writing, flawless acting, and the best "quartet ensemble"---like Betty White says, four legs on a table. :table:

Well, I was too young to go through what you did, but I definitely appreciate what you're saying, and totally understand it.
