View Full Version : OMG Natalie CRIED!
cfr1970 03-12-2020, 04:09 PM I watched the episode where her Dad died today and Mindy Cohn actually pushed out real tears with no smile or laugh suppression!
When the episode began I thought "Oh hell no she won't be able to pull this one off" but by the end of the episode I concede that she did pretty good with the grief scene with real tears and all. (I think Kim Fields was much better in this one though imo).
She must have really practiced a lot for this one lol. But she pulled it off ok.
One thing I did like was the continuity of her family members being played by the same people. I know Blair's Mother was changed to another actress and on Golden Girls they always had different people playing their relatives which drove me NUTS! I like that FOL tried to stay consistent in that area.
I also love that it's the same woman who played her Grandma from when she visited Eastland in the 3nd season. She's just so adorable. :)

She did? I don't remember her ever crying. It used to be a BIG thing at this board 20 years ago for all the JO fans to point out that NANCY MCKEON, the TOUGH GIRL, was the ONLY GIRL who CRIED!!!! BLAIR and NAT and TOOT never CRIED, only JO DID!!!! (lol)
with real tears and all.
If you say so---I don't recall that at all!
(I think Kim Fields was much better in this one though imo).
Really? I thought she got to the point of being over the top---so much so, I felt awkward for her.
One thing I did like was the continuity of her family members being played by the same people.
You make that sound like a novelty!
I know Blair's Mother was changed to another actress
Yeah, but Prototype Monica™ only appeared in episode 2. After that, the "real" Blair's mom came along. :) (and you could already picture her by how Blair described her in "Molly's Holiday"---that description sounds much more like Marj than Pam).
and on Golden Girls they always had different people playing their relatives which drove me NUTS!
Well, let's be fair: "always" is a bit much, isn't it? After all, what relatives were played by different actors other than Kate & Dennis?
Okay, and Rebecca.
Okay, and Big Daddy.
Okay, and Gloria.
Okay, so I kinda see your point. But still, a lot of their relatives were played by the same actors. :)
I also love that it's the same woman who played her Grandma from when she visited Eastland in the 3nd season. She's just so adorable. :)
Yes! She is SO adorable that in her first appearance, Natalie comes off like such an unlikable self-entitled BRAT. lol (sorry Nat!)
cfr1970 03-12-2020, 04:29 PM On Golden Girls Blanche's "Big Daddy" was played by 2 actors. Also Dorothy's sister was different people as well....or Blanche's sister....one of them. I can't recall which now.
Natalie's tears were real. In the scene where she's telling her Mom not to give away her Dad's things, you can see the real tears well up in her eyes. I was shocked she was able to pull that off.
Jo was great with the waterworks....Nancy McKeon can turn on those tears like a faucet lol.
Tootie wasn't over the top here. I thought she was pretty subtle in her performance. Real tears in her eyes too.
Blair, I never saw do it. Not a drop ever fell from her eyes...but that would totally ruin her mascara so she gets a pass from me. :)
EDIT: How do you break up the quotes like that? I try and try and never able to do it when I want to reply to separate parts of a post. I just can't figure it out after almost 3 years posting here!

Dang it cfr, you "pulled a Retro"! You were replying to me before I was finished editing my post! :grr: lol

I just felt embarrassed for Tootie in Nat's house, getting so worked up for Natalie's sake. Like someone posted here 20 years ago, you'd think it was Tootie's dad that had died instead of Nat's (then again, I suppose that can be continuity if you consider her hysteria over Jermaine Jackson? lol)

Well, it may be different if you're on a "tablet" or "smartphone" that all these kids have these days? :grr:
On a good ol'-fashioned PC, I just copy & paste the source person first, like "
" (without the space or quotation marks), then what portion I want quoted out of the whole message, I put "[/ quote]" (again, no space quotations) right after it (example below).
And if you want to quote more than one person, simply copy the
beginning code, and just plug in the different user name instead of the original one. :)

Yeah, as time went along, Mindy got better. As mentioned in the documentaries, she wasn't a professional actress; she was a girl they found at the Westlake Boarding School for Girls, Charlotte loved her, and they brought her on the show because she was a riot.
DO NOT get me started on the Golden Girls' relatives, and the continuity issues. OMG. I love the show, but it's like they never kept a Show Bible, or bothered to watch previous episodes and hire back the people from previous episodes.

I can't figure it out so i'm just going to continue replying like this.
The way she acted with Mrs. G about the Jermaine Jackson concert was really extreme, but yes it is continuity if we're going to accept this as being part of her personality. Tootie was a very emotional character, so this is why her reaction at the funeral didn't raise eyebrows. It was expected imo. And besides, Natalie is her best friend and you'd expect her over Blair and Jo to be more concerned for her.

Don't let the numbers in the "" formula throw you off. You actually don't need them! For example:
This is a fake thing I'm "quoting", lol.
I did that like this, with NO spaces in the formulas:
This is a fake thing I'm "quoting", lol.[/ quote]
RetroGuy2000 03-12-2020, 05:01 PM Yeah, but Prototype Monica™ only appeared in season 2.
I'm assuming that's a typo. ;) Prototype Monica™ in Season Two?!
After that, the "real" Blair's mom came along. :) (and you could already picture her by how Blair described her in "Molly's Holiday"---that description sounds much more like Marj than Pam).
I think Pam could have pulled off that fake smile, but I agree Marj was made for how Blair's mother was written, especially the fake smile. I've always wondered about the recasting, because they never recast another role (that I can think of). They were so consistent about that aspect.

Well, sort of! lol...I meant to say "episode 2". Fixed, thanks!

Yeah, that whole passive-aggressive fake smiling while sweetly cooing, "You cut up my credit cards?? That's all right---I just put your favorite sweater down the garbage disposal!" That is SO Marj's Monica!

I think the first one who played Blair's Mom was way too young she looked more like a sister than mother to her. The replacement so much better. I'm surprised you refer to them by their real names. For the life of me, I would never know that. Now that's a hardcore fan!

:yeahthat
Agree 100%! The first one was so TALL* and willowy and quiet. Just didn't feel like "Blair's mom".
*(we would never see a woman that TALL in Peekskill again until Jean Smart came along, lol)
I'm surprised you refer to them by their real names. For the life of me, I would never know that. Now that's a hardcore fan!
Well, we usually call them Prototype Monica and Monica.

Oh, we're definitely hardcore fans. Several of us have watched the episodes countless times. And yet, we still can find things to point out the next time we watch.
Sometimes, we even create limericks, poems, (or in '80s Sitcoms' case, sonnets) in honor of the show.
Just the mention of cheese dip still gets me laughing. (We watched "Like Mother, Like Daughter", and someone mentioned how Mrs. Garrett asks Cindy to bring in the cheese dip. But Cindy ignores her, and instead goes upstairs to get dressed, so we started getting silly and forming crazy fan theories on why Cindy wouldn't bring in the cheese dip).
It's been so much fun interacting with these guys here on Sitcoms Online.
FOL-FAN-ITA 03-12-2020, 05:55 PM About Grandma Mona, Charlotte said in her book that Molly Picon, during her second episode, had a lot of troubles with her lines, she often ran out of script and the producers, who didn't want to tell her the truth, said that they were having sound problems or something like that. And after that episode, they decided to retire her character
80s Dude 03-12-2020, 06:14 PM We never got any birthdate for Pamela Huntington to see if she was old enough to be Blair's mother. Internet searches show that she was a model and was on a cover of Cosmopolitian in 1971. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/01/a2/ac/01a2ac55d9a70e1524d305f2b6af90f5.jpg

Thanks for that info, ITA! I didn't know Molly Picon had had trouble remembering her lines. Very sad.

Her Wikipedia page says she died of Alzheimer's in 1992, so it could have began back when she was on FOL. She lived until 94 years old too, but I hope there weren't many years being invalid due to the disease. She was so adorable on FOL and also when she was young. If you go to the page, you'll see a really cute pic they have of her there.

I think PAMELA HAMILTON could have pulled it off playing LISA WHELCHEL's mum: BLAIR was only 15 years old and MONICA WARNER maybe 34 or 35? Back in the days women gave birth at a young age (unlike nowadays where most people get pregnant at 40 lol).

That cover surprises me because it looks more modern than 1971. If I didn't know the date, I would've guessed that was an 80's or even 90's cover.

I would have say more like the late 70's (it kind of reminds me of 'CHARLIE'S ANGELS' lol):happyface

Yes it does look late 70's too. It's the peek a boo boobage of the dress that makes it look even more modern to me.
But either way, it's way more modern looking than '71.

That's right, but I think Charlotte is a little mixed up there. How on earth could she mean Mona's second episode? Her second episode is her son's funeral, and she had I think only one line! I wonder if Charlotte meant her first episode, where she was all throughout the episode?
Thanks for that info, ITA! I didn't know Molly Picon had had trouble remembering her lines. Very sad.
This seemingly "mixed up memory" is from Charlotte's book.

Is that the same woman? Prototype Monica was played by Pam Huntington, not Hamilton. And there's no name on the cover.

I'm surprised you would say that since you're one of the older posters here, because to me the cover obviously looks "nostalgic" in its color scheme and fonts. (waving nicely at you because I didn't mean "older" in a negative way, lol)

Maybe she had more lines but they reduced her role for this reason, she wasn't able to remember her lines
