The book makes it look like Bobby only decided to give the money in the lost wallet back to the old man distinctly after meeting the Old Timer. Wrong! THe boys gave the money to the police for someone to possibly claim. The Old Man got his money and wallet back from the cops and then he showed up at the Brady house to give the boys a financial reward.
