after the 2nd season the show went from #7 to #25 and this is why James was still on the show. Plus the show maintained a similar number the season after james left which was #26. So i guess that alaska episode madepeople stop watching the show lol

If you follow the show evolvement, first and second season had more hard nose writing concerning poverty, unemployment, race issues , etc..
But starting with third season the writing softened up and focus shifted to JJ and his shenanigans. And Florida and James were shifted to background in supporting roles. That might explain the ratings drop.

I will always believe the show lost fans after that Alaska episode:lol: Can you imagine watching the show at the time when it aired on CBS and thought the family was going to get out the hood and saw that it was never going to change

That happened twice on that show where they almost left the hood. Another time was where they were all packed and ready to go to Mississippi. And then the bad news came.
Maybe the producers instead of killing James character in season 4, they should have said that he left for Alaska for a year to work on pipeline.

And I think it was a shock to the viewing public at the time
