View Full Version : Charlotte Rae and the relationship with her co-stars
FOL-FAN-ITA 03-06-2020, 10:24 AM In her autobiography, CR talks about the relationship with her co-stars on both DS and FOL. She said she had a warm and friendly relationship with the kids on Strokes and with Conrad Bain, she said John Lawlor was her best friend on the set during season 1 and she said that the core 4 were politely distant with her because they thought she was a boss on the show. She said that when she was working on the show(s) but did things changed after?
She never mentioned or talk about John Lawlor, the Lost Girls, Conrad Bain and the kids on DS and they never talked about her.
The relationship with the 4 became stronger, she said she was more in touch with Lisa and Nancy than Mindy or Kim.
Do you have other theories?

Trying to understand this. In one paragraph you said she Charlotte had good relationship with Conrad Bain and John Lawlor and then the next paragraph you are saying the opposite. Can you clarify what you are saying more clearly?

I said Charlotte had a good relationship with JL and CB the period she was working with them. But AFTER the show, she never mentioned or talked about them and viceversa. Probably they weren't friends anymore AFTER (NOT DURING) the show

Just because she didn't work with them any more doesn't mean that they didn't see one another after they existed from the show. Charlotte Rae still was in contact with Julie Pie and there are plenty of photos to prove it many years after the show ended. Not sure about the other girls. Perhaps Sunday's documentary will shed more light.
Here is a more recent photo of Charlotte, Kim, and Julie Pie when Kim was on Dancing with the Stars.

valentina warner 03-06-2020, 03:56 PM I don't believe CHARLOTTE RAE
valentina warner 03-06-2020, 04:02 PM Oops i pressed the button accidentally!
I meant, i don't believe CHARLOTTE RAE had a distant relationship with the core of 4: there was simply so much chemistry on the set with the 5 of them, and you cannot fake that!
I have heard of stars not having chemistry off set, and you can normally notice that there isn't that much either on set.
The proof is, that LISA WHELCHEL and NANCY MCKEON said they were friends with her for almost 40 years and there are photos to prove it!
And yes, i believe she was closer to the two of them than she ever was with KIM FIELDS and MINDY COHN....
'80sSitcoms 03-06-2020, 04:38 PM I meant, i don't believe CHARLOTTE RAE had a distant relationship with the core of 4:
Well, she did. She talks about it in her book.
there was simply so much chemistry on the set with the 5 of them, and you cannot fake that!
Yes you can. Vivian Vance and William Frawley HATED each other on "I Love Lucy". But they come off as thos lovable Mertzes with a long marriage. Some movie star who portrayed couples couldn't stand each other off screen, but made it work on screen.
I have heard of stars not having chemistry off set, and you can normally notice that there isn't that much either on set.
Yeah, sometimes they can't get past it; but some actors can.
The proof is, that LISA WHELCHEL and NANCY MCKEON said they were friends with her for almost 40 years and there are photos to prove it!
Again, Charlotte talks about the "polite distance" the girls kept her at in her book.
And yes, i believe she was closer to the two of them than she ever was with KIM FIELDS and MINDY COHN....
She was still close with Kim and Mindy; just look at their social media posts after Charlotte's passing.
valentina warner 03-06-2020, 04:44 PM And besides, you cannot work for so many years with someone, and so closely too not to have a relationship: you're meant to bond somehow!
And if CHARLOTTE RAE was bossy towards the core of 4, it's because she was older and had more acting experience. She was probably trying to teach them and give them acting advice.
'80sSitcoms 03-06-2020, 04:50 PM And besides, you cannot work for so many years with someone, and so closely too not to have a relationship: you're meant to bond somehow!
That would be lovely if that would happen everywhere. Then everyone would love their co-workers.
And if CHARLOTTE RAE was bossy towards the core of 4, it's because she was older and had more acting experience. She was probably trying to teach them and give them acting advice.
No no, she wasn't "bossy". When he said "boss" he meant they thought she was part of management. Someone who had power over them (perhaps disciplinary, they may have wondered) and over the show.

Well i still cannot believe what you're telling me about CHARLOTTE RAE: she had so much chemistry on the set with LISA WHELCHEL as BLAIR and NANCY MCKEON as JO to fake it!
And if that were the case: why would she have kept in touch with them for 40 years?
And why would she have chemistry with the DIFFERENT STROKES kids if she only had a season with them, whereas she had years with the core of 4???

I'm not saying she faked it. I'm just saying what she and the girls have said. And they kept in touch with each other because it was still a special time for all of them.

After the show, Lisa Whelchel disappeared from Hollywood and had little to no contact with her costars for like 10 years.

I'm glad to know she was close to John Lawlor. I do feel as though that friendship helped their chemistry on set. I know he took it pretty hard when he was fired from FOL (he calls it "fired" in the E! Hollywood Story), but I also know he was working again on major projects that very same year, so he found work very fast... within months, even.
Charlotte did an interview a few years ago where she specifically mentioned how great the Lost Girls were. She mentioned each of them by name, although she got Julie's name wrong, and I think she called her Julie McWhorter (who played Sassette Smurfling on The Smurfs) (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0574768/). Charlotte may have been in touch/kept in touch with Julie Pie; they sat together during Kim's DWTS stint, and posed for photos together, Charlotte back with one of her lost Eastland girls. Julie was (as far as I know) the only Lost Girl to attend Charlotte's public memorial service, although there was a private one, as well. There are several photos of Mindy, Kim, Mac, Julie, Geri, and Aunt Pat at Charlotte's memorial, on this forum.
Geri has stated in her book, and in some documentaries, that she felt alternately accepted and rejected by Charlotte: "First she would accept me, then she would reject me." Charlotte rejected this interpretation, but maybe later she accepted some parts of it, because they did make up, and appeared together for several awards shows. Geri said she felt it was because Geri reminded Charlotte too much of her mentally handicapped son. I think, instead, it was because of the "professional distance" Charlotte put between herself and her girls, as described by the Core Four, and because they thought she was a Big Boss on the show.
I don't know exactly what happened between Charlotte and the DS cast, in later years. I only know from Kim's book that there were troubles on the set as early as when Tootie was still appearing on DS (so during or prior to Season Three on DS/Season Two on FOL). Things apparently got so bad on the show that Dixie Carter only did one season, preferring instead the relative calm of... the Designing Women set.

I've seen interviews with Charlotte late in her life and she clearly had memory issues. She had trouble recalling names and the interviewer had to feed her names to help her along.

I agree "Sue Weaver" is an odd choice to call Sue Ann. Nobody calls her Sue, outside of that one instance. We get more "Dorothy Ramsey"s and "Joanna Marie Polniaczek"s than we get "Sue Weaver"s.

Yup. Delta says season 3 is when it started going downhill (i.e., her personal demons).

When i think of CHARLOTTE RAE, i picture her as a nice and warm person, which is why i cannot imagined her being 'distant' to anyone and certainly not the core of 4!
She might have acted like the 'Big boss' off set, but i'd still like to imagine she'd be some kind of 'friend and mentor' to the girls...
cfr1970 03-06-2020, 08:36 PM It wouldn't bother me to know that Charlotte Rae and the girls weren't as close as depicted on the show. After all, they were acting and this was a job to them. What we see on the screen is all make believe and if they all went their separate ways without much contact after the show was over, it's no big deal to me. Hell, if I even learned that they all despised Rae in real life (of course I know they didn't!), it wouldn't bother me much because to me what counts is what they made together with that show.
Like someone mentioned upthread about the Mertzes despising each other in real life, it still doesn't take anything away from the show knowing that. Lucy & Desi also reached a point where they stopped speaking to each other towards the end but it takes nothing away from the show or my memory of them.
Remember, these are people who worked together for a few years. Like with any job, they're co-workers before anything else. Once the directer yelled "cut", they weren't their characters anymore and most likely went back to their own lives.
Also, when we see them at functions over the years together afterwards, that too is just work for them and you can be sure they're being paid for coming back together. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here, but my view is so what if they weren't all as close as they were on the show. I really don't think it matters one way or another. It's what they made together as their fictional characters that counts with me.

I do know that Charlotte was close to the girls in later years, so I think it was just a matter of Charlotte keeping things professional. In the case of Geri, because she already felt like an outsider due to her handicap, I suspect this is why she felt alternately accepted/rejected by Charlotte. But I also know she was close to Lisa, so it still feels like a tight-knit group.
I know seven of the Eastland girls were close to one another, and I do like that. I wish Molly had found a "study buddy", so to speak, but... it is what it is.
For me, it does hurt when actors we love have feuds behind the scenes. I remember the Penny Marshall/Cindy Williams dispute when it was happening, and it absolutely ruined the final season of that show, where we got Shirley for one episode; it became "Laverne &". The Angela Watson/Staci Keenan and Christine Lakin feud also haunted me for a while, but at least it didn't ruin the show itself, and it seems as though things are better now, and Angela is maybe getting away from a bad element.
So I guess for me, there are different degrees to which a feud between actors/actresses would bother me.

I guess you're right, but as much as i try not to let it bother me it does: i know it's all fictional, but because i post stories online, i tend to get so involved in the characters that sometimes it feels like they actually exist!
On the other hand, i still find it hard to believe, that working so close with someone as an actor you wouldn't automatically bond? (I mean, it's not the same as working in a shop or an office lol!) Besides, a lot of actors have met and fallen in love that way, so there something from a different kind of world in the acting business......:talk:
cfr1970 03-06-2020, 10:49 PM For what it's worth, I do believe the 4 main actresses are close today. I never look at the social media feeds of celebrities, but when Nancy McKeon's brother passed away I looked at her feed and scrolled up to a bunch of earlier posts in the year where I saw birthday wishes she gave to the others with nice messages that showed they were still close with each other.
It does feel nice knowing they're friends in real life, but for me personally (probably cause i'm a hardcore cynic lol) it doesn't bother me if they want to rip each other's throats out either.
And to RetroGuy, I agree about Laverne & Shirley---I was around 12 when all that went down but clearly remember feeling upset at the time because I just couldn't believe Laverne & Shirley hated each other! And when Shirley was gone, in my mind I felt it was all Penny Marshall's fault for pushing her off the show and I stopped watching. Anyway that's a whole other show thread!

That's a good point, and it could be the reason. Maybe Mrs. G was trying to make Sue Ann sound more sophisticated for Scott Dunbar, who was probably a Manhattan socialite.
Or maybe Blair had fixed Scott Dunbar up with Sue Ann, calling her "Sue Weaver", for the same reason. Then, when Scott called for her, Mrs. Garrett was just responding to what he asked her on the phone.

Looking at your copy of the script for the "Dieting" episode, Mrs. Garrett was suppose to say "Sue Ann Weaver". So that is a slip that the editors missed. At least Mrs. Garrett didn't say "Julie Weaver" like the two slip ups that went unnoticed during the trampoline scene in the Brady Bunch where Mrs. Brady called Peter "Chris" and Greg call Jan "Eve".

Hmmm, or was it?? I don't think any of Retro's scripts are final scripts. At least, all the ones I've read so far, there were definite line changes and cuts and parts of scenes cut out, etc.
Maybe Charlotte in the moment just thought it would be cute to say "Sue Weaver" instead, as Lorsie said, to sound more sophisticated?
I can't see Blair introducing her as "Sue" to any kids. You can't hide Sue Ann's Kansas City, Kansas roots no matter how hard you try, so why even bother? lol

Or maybe Blair had fixed Scott Dunbar up with Sue Ann, calling her "Sue Weaver", for the same reason. Then, when Scott called for her, Mrs. Garrett was just responding to what he asked her on the phone.
According to the script you have, Mrs. Garrett was suppose to say "Sue Ann Weaver". Perhaps that was a blooper by Charlotte and the director and production staff didn't catch it in time.
RetroGuy2000 05-20-2020, 11:36 PM Dixie actually did a season and a half. She started appearing mid-way through season 6, in January 1984. Then she would stay on through all of season 7.

Thank you, Professor Gideon!

That's definitely possible. Could even be that Charlotte blew the line, and they thought it worked just fine, as is. I know Joss Whedon doesn't allow for the slightest deviation on his shows, but not every other director is as stringent.

I'm just gonna watch part of season 7, and a bit of season 8 (namely "Bulimia", which I remember seeing when I was younger). I'm watching now mainly to see how Dixie does her character, but it's getting tiresome/old watching the show by this point.

I remember "Bulimia" being pretty good, but that may be because having Kimberly back felt like a breath of fresh air. (As you know, I'm usually a fan of original casts, and not so much replacement actors).
I did feel bad for Dixie, knowing Gary made her feel pretty unwelcome. Despite his poor health, I don't know why he would do that to her.

Makes you wonder if she detailed that in her book. I'm glad she found success as Julia Sugarbaker. :)

No idea, but if you see something, please let us know.

Yeah, I think you and I both agree that it's not surprising that someone with her talent landed on her feet (I usually think of Julia's monologues as her crowning lines). It's just a shame she had to exit to find somewhere better.
'80sSitcoms 05-21-2020, 12:37 AM Yeah...I'm currently binging on seasons 6 and 7 on cable. I've got the first 5 seasons on DVD, but hadn't cared to buy 6 and 7. I haven't seen many of these since they first aired, and they're vivid memories. Since it's been so long and I just happened to catch them as they were about to start cycling again in reruns, I thought it'd be fun to revisit those "cast change" years. And after 30 years, it is neat to see them again in fresh viewings.
