View Full Version : The home behind Edna's Edibles
cfr1970 03-04-2020, 05:01 PM Antenna TV started the season with Edna's Edibles this week and I noticed 2 weird things about the home behind the store.
1. The front door opens out instead of in which just looks strange. I don't recall it being that way in my memory so it must have been changed to open in later on?
2. Also, immediately on top of that front door is the door to the bedrooms, yet if the front door is directly below that, then how on earth would the door above lead to the bedrooms when it would logically lead directly outside?!

Wow, good catch---I never thought of it opening "out"!

Yes, that is SO odd. My fan theory is that when you enter the doorway upstairs over the front door, you IMMEDIATELY turn right, walking "toward the audience", then you turn right again, walking "toward the left of the TV screen", and the hall ends that way and the girls' room is on the left, and the bathroom and Mrs. Garrett's room are on the right (hence the door "part-way" up the stairs leading to a left doorway that is presumably Mrs. Garrett's room).
You do what you can with your mind to make things work!

That would make sense. I don't know why they felt they needed that whole open landing up there that led to the door at the end. I think it would've been fine if the stairs just ended at the top without a long landing.
My memory of these seasons is foggy, but perhaps they used that landing to make long entrances or something? Otherwise, I see no point of it. Murphey Brown had a similar landing at the top of the stairs, but on that show, the layout was more logical.
Speaking of the upstairs bedroom, do they ever show it? I can't believe a big house like that only has 1 bedroom for the 4 girls to share like they did at Eastland. You'd think they'd have 3 or 4 bedrooms up there and have them split up 2 in each.

mmm, I don't think they did except maybe once or twice? Maybe. "Designing Women" had a similar one that seems even bigger and longer, and they only used it like ONE TIME in seven years. Can you believe that? What a waste! (see below) It was also one of only a couple or few episodes where we ever saw Julia's bedroom.

You'd think! lol Ostensibly there is a single room for Mrs. Garrett/Beverly Ann, and you'd think maybe 1 more, but we only ever see the girls' room, and a hallway. That's it.

RetroGuy2000 03-04-2020, 06:14 PM Yes, there's a big bedroom (for the girls), a bedroom we never see (for Edna), and later there's even an attic, which they turn into a third bedroom rather late in the series.

That's the episode that I vaguely remember. I saw it last year when a marathon of the show played on another channel. I think it was Blair who fell through the wall into the girl's room? I know someone fell through that wall lol. I remember seeing it.
So I did see the girl's room but just can't remember much about it except that I think it was nearly a carbon copy of the Eastland room? I'll just have to keep watching until they show it.

The Eastland and EE bedrooms were not really that similar, although I can see why people remember them that way. Memories fade and blend together. The Eastland bedroom had a window at Stage Right, while the EE bedroom had a window instead at Stage Left. The EE bedroom also had (at least in later years) a strange platform at the back, which is where they put a couple of their beds, as well as a bathroom accessed from Stage Right, while the Eastland bathroom was a shared bathroom accessed from the hallway.
Some things similar about both bedrooms is that both of the rooms opened from Stage Left, both rooms had four beds (until the last few seasons), and both of them had Blair's "The New Yorker" poster, which was seen in every season of the show (unlike Senor Tiger, the sombrero, the cat pillows, the grandfather clocks, the globes, or Mrs. Garrett herself).

I just found a pic online of the bedroom and now i'm remembering it. It had steps that led to that back platform which is kind of strange to have for a bedroom. Episodes should start showing on Antenna TV soon of it so I can get a better view.
There's a You Tube channel that does pretty realistic walk throughs of classic sitcom houses. I saw one for Bewitched, Brady Bunch and Mary Tyler Moore show. I'd love to see one of those done for the Facts of Life house.

I count one extra hallway where you turn right, walk down and then enter the girls’ room on the left. So then there’s what, two bedrooms over the store and nothing but an enormous empty hallway running the upper perimeter of the living room. The attic is completely imaginary in that case; as is the kitchen staircase that is directly behind the main staircase. Are we also supposed to think that the bathroom off the bedroom has only a sink and toilet? Because Blair and Jo are using the shower in a different bathroom in one episode....somewhere in that labyrinthine hallway.... :)
cfr1970 03-04-2020, 10:03 PM Ideally, the staircase should be on the right side next to the front door. This way you could still logically have the big landing up there, only it would then cross left to the rooms which would logically be in that area above like in Designing Women and Murphy Brown sets.
The set designers must have had their reasoning for putting the stairs where they were. Possibly because it was better positioned in the middle of the two main sets...or they were just on crack lol. After all, they did build the front door to open the wrong way, which was eventually corrected because I do remember it opening in later on.
RetroGuy2000 03-05-2020, 01:26 AM The set designers must have had their reasoning for putting the stairs where they were. Possibly because it was better positioned in the middle of the two main sets...or they were just on crack lol.
I've often believed that set designers were on crack.
How else do we explain the "attic" on The Brady Bunch or on Full House, when the exterior shots show there's no space for a third floor? Or, conversely, the exterior of the Huxtables' home, which shows three above-ground floors, but they have only two above-ground floors on the inside.
Growing Pains wasn't any better, with the staircase in the living room winding up and ultimately going the wrong way, towards the edge of the house. Family Matters' front staircase had the exact same problem.
In the final FOL season, they close the store and turn the shop into bedroom and kitchen space. But the layout is completely wrong, and nothing remotely resembles the space it's supposed to be in.

Wait... there's a kitchen staircase behind the living room staircase? (I know it's very, very common to see two staircases in houses in 1980s sitcoms; I just didn't remember one for the EE/OOH building).

Here's the link to the Bewitched home walk through. It's really cool how she does these videos. In the description below that video she gives a link to all her work where you can see I Love Lucy, Brady Bunch, (even Alice's room!), Leave it to Beaver house, Mary Tyler Moore's apartment and more. It's a lot of fun and you feel like you're really walking through each of them. Enjoy!

I don't remember that. Is that how the show ended? They turned the store into living space? Why on earth did they do that?! All I can recall from the ending is that Blair became some teacher at Eastland or the principal or something of the sort and it looked like it was kind of setting things up for a spin off that never happened. Other than that, my memories of the final show is very vague.

I don’t think is that out of the ordinary for an old east coast house.
RetroGuy2000 03-05-2020, 05:42 AM I don't remember that. Is that how the show ended? They turned the store into living space? Why on earth did they do that?!
No, partway through Season Nine they closed the store. Which made no sense, considering retail space is so much more expensive than residential space.
All I can recall from the ending is that Blair became some teacher at Eastland or the principal or something of the sort and it looked like it was kind of setting things up for a spin off that never happened. Other than that, my memories of the final show is very vague.
Yeah, Blair became headmistress. Which I actually very much liked. It felt like the show had gone full circle, from spoiled, rich Eastland student to... well... spoiled, rich Eastland headmistress, although I also felt as though the show had lost its way for about three seasons. It felt like a return to the roots of the show.

I'll have to keep my eye out for that since I don't remember the store closing at all. But by that point in the original series run, I had long tuned out of the show because as you said, it lost it's way in the last few seasons and got stale. I think the loss of Mrs. Garrett was a major hole that caused many to tune out.

I kind of dislike that.

No, I believe Blair lost all of her money by pouring it into Eastland. So I really dislike that. I eliminate this episode from my faniverse.
Actually, as it's been pointed out before, the season finale to season 8 seems a much more fitting "series finale" for the show.
RetroGuy2000 03-05-2020, 12:52 PM No, I believe Blair lost all of her money by pouring it into Eastland. So I really dislike that. I eliminate this episode from my faniverse.
Her parents were still rich, and while Daddy Warner had cut off funds, there's no way Monica Warner would have abided by that, as much as she disliked Blair's father. There's no way Blair would have stayed "poor" for long.
RetroGuy2000 03-05-2020, 01:05 PM But can't you imagine the stairs taking a turn back that you can't see on camera?
Yeah, but the problem in both cases is that the staircase keeps winding to the left (Stage Right) beyond where the edge of the house should be. The exterior shots of the house show the wall to the left of the door is flat, without any kind of alcove to account for the staircase pushing left.

I think so as well. Mrs. Garret was the heart of the show. Cut her out, and you're left with a show on life support.

cfr1970 03-05-2020, 03:59 PM But can't you imagine the stairs taking a turn back that you can't see on camera?
That's exactly how it is on The Partridge Family. You see the stairs go straight up and the characters take a left where clearly the edge of the house is, but it's implied that there's another set of stairs that continue going up alongside the outer wall to the second floor.
All in the Family does it too. They go up along the back wall stairs, but you can see up in the ceiling a ramp showing where the stairs take a turn left after going up along the first set of stairs.

Hi [B]Reto!
I also like the fact that BLAIR ends up becoming the headmistress (it's something the audiences never expected from someone like her lol!) but i believe she went from 'spoiled rich student' to 'responsible mature adult'.
You can see a bit of MRS G in her, when she has a heart to heart talk to JULIETTE LEWIS, and gives her some advice in the last episode 'The beginning of the end'.....;)
cfr1970 03-05-2020, 04:56 PM The front door opened in on today's episode! So it only opened out for the first couple of shows of the season before they sobered up and fixed it lol.

I wonder who caught the mistake. Were viewers writing in, asking them to fix the door, or did some stagehand say, "Um, this is weird. Let's fix the door so it opens the right way." ?

Blair definitely grew quite a bit over the last couple of episodes. It's kind of startling, because during the last few seasons, the character of Blair became... well, more like a caricature of Blair than the Real Blair. Caricature Blair didn't even know the US minted coins, while the Real Blair could be snooty, but hadn't completely lost her brain.
It's kind of like the writers realized, "We need for Blair to grow up, so she can mother these girls," so they ignored the Bimbo Blair seasons.
I know what you mean about the heart-to-heart conversation. That was very similar to what Mrs. Garrett would have done... but to be honest, the Real Blair had compassion, and could have had that conversation with Juliette Lewis. After all, the Real Blair had several such conversations with Jo in Seasons 2 and 3 (as '80sSitcoms points out, the "your father has more love for you than all three of my fathers combined" speeches). In fact, she even has a heart-to-heart with Cindy in the very first episode.
It's only because Blair had become a caricature of herself that that heart-to-heart conversation feels surprising.

I feel exactly the same way you do Retro: the original BLAIR from the 'pilot' episode 'the girls school' from 'DIFFERENT STOKES' and season 1, is the one i always cherished, and when they writers started making a mockery out of her (or the caricature as you nicely put in) i became more and more annoyed, by then MRS G and all her good advice were no longer a part of the show, so i stopped watching.
And yes, BLAIR definitely had compassion and was quite sensitive (despite the fact that most people only see her as 'shallow') and to me she is definitely a complex character and has more dept than she lets anyone believe. MRS G even told her she had a heart of gold during her 'farewell wedding party', before she left for Africa (that episode makes me so sad)...
Thank god we've got the 'Fanfiction site' at least, to let our imagination run away with us: that is where i find so much pleasure writing my stories, and reading some of the stories other people post!:talk:

There was an episode in one of the later seasons with Blair locked in an elevator with an old man which I think really showed Blair's maturity and serious side. It's one of my favorite episodes too.
EDIT: I just looked up that episode titled "Concentration" that aired in season 7 and the actor who played the old man in the elevator with Blair is still alive today....at age 100! Wow! Here's his Wikipedia page if anyone's interested:

Hey, that actor you're talking about: Nehemiah Persoff was in a few episodes of TWILIGHT ZONE (he played a German Nazi in one of them) and he was quite good on the episode 'Concentration' in FOL too!

I liked that episode, too, though it's been many years since I've seen it.
Nice find! And I'm glad Mr. Persoff is still around. His IMDB profile lists an even longer career, spanning from 1948 to 2003. That is some career!
(Also, we're always interested in links related to "Facts", so don't hesitate to post links to things like FOL actor bios and stuff. It's always appreciated).

Keep writing those stories, Valentina! And please also keep sharing links so we can read them. There's such creativity from the viewers, here, and that keeps this place fun.
cfr1970 03-07-2020, 12:02 AM I found on Google Maps what could have been Edna's Edibles on Main St in Peekskill. I know it was never a real place but there's a deli on a corner that looks just like it could've been the actual store, with the house on top and in back. It's almost uncanny and fun to look at it and imagine it was the place. It's an Ecuadorian Deli in downtown Peekskill...what do you think? Can you imagine Mrs. G and the girls inside there? RetroGuy2000 03-07-2020, 12:18 AM I found on Google Maps what could have been Edna's Edibles on Main St in Peekskill. Cool find, CFR! And kind of apropos, considering Edna's Edibles was an Armenian deli before Raymond bought it for Mrs. G.
I could definitely see hanging out, here, on an excursion to Peekskill. But here's the question: do they sell quiche?

If not quiche maybe apple strudels.
I forgot it was an Armenian deli before it was Edna's, so yeah it really is apropos to be an Ecuadorian deli now.
RetroGuy2000 03-07-2020, 12:57 AM Okay, if they have apple strudel, next time I'm in Peekskill, I will definitely stop in.

I actually used to work in Peekskill back in the 90's at the old Con Edison power plant and would think about FOL when i'd drive up from lower Westchester on my daily commute and wonder where that store could have been. Heck, if I still lived up there today i'd go to that deli just for the fun of it to have myself a look around.
'80sSitcoms 03-09-2020, 10:32 AM The front door opened in on today's episode! So it only opened out for the first couple of shows of the season before they sobered up and fixed it lol.
Wow...this really is fascinating! :)

How cool!
cfr1970 03-10-2020, 03:48 PM Today's episode "The Chain Letter", Blair walked in from outside through a second front door in the living room. It's at the front of the stage on the other side of the fireplace from the main door. The shot was shown directly in front of it so you can even see the outside when she walks in.
I never knew there was another door and it seems weird to have one there when there's the main door 2 feet away, plus all those patio doors in back of the set. This home sure had plenty of exits!

I know, right?? I LOVE that door!! :loveya: It's so neat that it was rarely ever used as another entrance, and then, cfr, you watch---eventually it turns into a door to the garage! (Honest!)

Well, the show showed plenty of characters out plenty of doors. ;)

A door to the garage actually makes sense. So I guess they take away the outside scenery and added a garage wall where they walk in? Do we ever see the actual garage set? It's been so long since i've seen these episodes, it's like it's new all again for me.

Well, it's like you see a "peek into the garage". And yes, we do actually see the set in one episode! (I was gonna say "no", but then I forgot, lol). It's "Tootie Drives".

Isn't that a neat feeling? :)

Yes it is. I have many memories of stand out moments throughout the show, but the Edna Edibles years I haven't seen literally since the 80's when it originally ran.
I caught the Decades marathon on TV last year, but it was late in the weekend so I only caught the Over our Heads episodes. So all these episodes airing currently on Antenna TV are like new because I forgot so much.
I do remember the Tootie Drives episode from when I first saw it. I remember they did outside shots of them in the car and I was 16 at the time and BEGGING my Dad for a car of my own when that episode aired, so that's probably why it's so memorable for me.
I remember bitterly thinking "Damn it, Tootie is driving before me!"

Wow, that is so cool! That reminds me of when Lifetime used to air hour-long blocks of "The Golden Girls" and "Designing Women" back to back (2 more '80s shows I was raised on), and once in a blue moon a "Golden Girls" episode would come on that I wouldn't recognize at all, and it was so foreign to me: dialogue and stories I was lost on? What the... And I would realize it was an episode I'd NEVER SEEN BEFORE (or at least since the show's original run), and that was SO much fun! :woohoo:

(though I don't think we see much of the garage at all, just more like the camera's "sitting on the hood of the car" and we're watching Tootie and the rotating folks in the passenger seat giving her their advice, lol)

I wish The Golden Girls was new to me. I know every episode by heart that i'm jealous of people who never saw it because they get to experience it for the first time.
GG is one show where the jokes are SO damn funny no matter how many times you see it, but I would love to experience seeing it for the first time again.
Remember the episode where Dorothy says to Rose how Blanche isn't that big of a slut, and a second later she comes walking out to the patio hunched over saying "I can barely walk!"....LOL...No matter how many times I see that scene I howl in laughter because it's so damn funny.
They should've had Natalie do that in the episode when she lost her virginity. Could you imagine the look on Mrs. Garrett's face?!

Yes! The writing, the acting, the directing, just everything came together on that show.

cfr1970 03-10-2020, 05:57 PM Can you imagine a crossover episode with these 2 shows? The Golden Girls visit NYC and Rose gets them on the wrong train that winds up in Peekskill and they visit Edna's Edibles. What a fun episode that would've been!
I think Mrs. G would've interacted great with all three of them...even Sophia. And they aired Facts of Life right before GG on Sat. nights so it would've been easy to do. What a lost opportunity!
'80sSitcoms 03-10-2020, 05:58 PM ^---oh man, that would've been fun!

Sitcommania 03-10-2020, 08:32 PM I’d love to hear Dorothy and Sophia make wisecracks about Over Our Heads.
