Judy Sheindlin reveals on Monday's pre-taped Ellen show that the upcoming 25th season of her lucrative syndicated court show will be its last. But Sheindlin says she's working on a new court show that she couldn't offer details about, titled Judy Justice. "CBS (Television Distribution, which distributes the show) sort of felt, I think, they wanted to optimally utilize the repeats of my program," she says, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Now they have 25 years of my reruns. What they decided to do is sell a couple of years' worth of reruns. But I'm not tired, so Judy Justice will be coming out a year later." Sheindlin adds that she couldn't go into detail, but says: "Judge Judy, you'll be able to see next year — a full year, all new shows. The following couple of years, you should be able to get all the reruns that CBS has sold on the stations currently carrying Judge Judy, and Judy Justice will be going elsewhere. Isn't that fun?" Sheindlin is TV's highest-paid personality, earning $47 million per year from Judge Judy, which launched in September 1996.

Report: Judy Sheindlin's feud with CBS led her to end Judge Judy after 25 years (https://www.tmz.com/2020/03/02/judge-judy-stepped-away-show-cbs-feud-rights/)

TMZ reports that "Judy and CBS have been feuding for quite some time, and it largely has to do with the former head honcho of the network, Les Moonves, no longer working there. A new regime has taken over ... and we're told they and Judy just haven't been seeing eye-to-eye on a lot of things she and Les were square on. Specifically, we're told Judy was being shut down left and right on possible new shows she developed ... something we're told was she'd be able to do under her latest contract with them, but hasn't been realized after Moonves was ousted in 2018."

Judy Sheindlin's next show Judy Justice aiming for streaming riches (https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/judge-judy-sheindlin-judy-justice-scott-koondel-1203520868/)

Judge Judy is unusual in TV's current landscape because it's strictly a broadcast show with reruns that have never been available on cable or streaming. Sheindlin's new show, Judy Justice, aims to change that. The new show is "expected to be a gaveler in a similar format as Judge Judy," reports Cynthia Littleton. "But it will not be aimed for broadcast syndication. The bet is that Judy Justice will command attention from a streaming service or major cable outlet that can craft an innovative distribution plan that blends linear and streaming platforms." Littleton adds: "Sheindlin is not believed to be facing any non-compete restrictions after she moves on next year. There’s been some friction between Sheindlin and CBS in recent years over the handling of her rerun library. Sheindlin gained control over her archive at some point during her numerous contract negotiations with CBS. CBS wound up buying the rights to the Judge Judy library for an estimated $100 million after the rights were shopped around in 2017."

I wonder how Judge Judy's farewell season (and all of the other syndicated judge shows) are being handled with COVID-19 protocols (like, for example, how they deal with the audience that comes to see their tapings, or are they being taped without an audience).

They are all doing it differently.

Judge Judy is running episodes taped before COVID that she had in the can but hadn't aired. No idea how many she has left before she has to start filming new episodes

People's Court is using Zoom with the Judge and litigants at home.

Judge Mathis is in his usual courtroom but litigants are separated by a plastic barrier and the audience has plastic masks. there only a few audience members in the Courtroom. It's always the same audience members so I assume they are staff who are tested frequently.

I don't know when we'll get to such a point myself. But if I had to make a bet on Judge Judy resumes taping of its new episodes, it'll probably be around next January. And will there be any sort of farewell specials commemorating the end of Judge Judy's run, or will it just be business as usual? Even with Judith Sheindlin getting at least a minute for a farewell speech for her show and its audience?

Also, I didn't know Judge Judy had that huge a backlog of unaired cases. Did Judge Judy cram its taping schedule upon the start of the COVID outbreak?

I used to be an ardent watcher of JJ.

About 3-4 years ago, her demeanor changed. It was subtle, but noticeable. She actually dropped a lot of her snarkiness that is directed toward the litigants.

And another thing I observed after watching/recording cases (2008-2016), I started recognizing some of the same people (with different names of course) playing the roles of plaintiffs and defendants. That's when it dawned on me that they are indeed actors playing the roles. Since I have watched for entertainment reasons, it hasn't been a deal breaker.

One point that has changed over time has been JJ application of the law. In some of the early 2000's JJ would tell a renter that he/she had indeed moved out of the apartment even if a small towel had been left behind. About 5 years ago, she had taken the renter's right that a person still occupied the space to the very last day of the rent; even if a pillow had been left behind.

I wish JJ was streaming somewhere even though I have my recordings.

Judy Sheindlin blames CBS' handling of Hot Bench for her Judge Judy exit: “You disrespected my creation" (https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-judge-judy-is-taking-her-gavel-from-broadcast-tv-to-streaming-11622647643)

Sheindlin created the 2014-2019 syndicated court panel show, but she says she felt slighted by CBS dumping Hot Bench to make room for The Drew Barrymore Show in 2019. “You disrespected my creation,” Ms. Sheindlin tells The Wall Street Journal of the handling of Hot Bench by CBS. “And you were wrong. Not only in disrespecting my creation, but your gamble in what you put in its place.” Sheindlin adds with a laugh “We had a nice marriage. It’s going to be a Bill and Melinda Gates divorce.”

Wrong. She's not my favorite TV judge. Judy is nothing more than a theatrical judge that uses her behavior as a gimmick to get people to watch. I can't stand Judge Judy.

I never cared much for Judge Judy. Judge Marilyn on The People's Court seemed much more professional and judicious. Judge Judy would just get mean.

I love Judge Milian. Unlike Judy, Marilyn gives advice on her show that we could all use in various situations. She doesn't interrupt people and shows respect. I wish Pluto TV would have added a channel for her instead of Judy. Unfortunately, hot head theatrics gain more viewership over quality.

The theatrics on JJ sure are over the top. If I had a case, I'd never bring it to Judge Judy. Judge Marilyn seems reasonable.

Yep. I feel like Judge Marilyn actually listens to the plaintiffs and defendants. Judge Judy is constantly screaming, "I'm speaking!" Judy, when your mouth is open, your ears are closed. :nonono:

Okay, SitcomsOnline users, Here are a few details regarding the end of Judge Judy:

The final case of Judge Judy was taped on April 15, 2021. The final episode of Judge Judy will air on July 23, but the last case to be taped already aired on June 8. Judge Judy never released its cases in the order that they were taped.

On that final taping, there were no farewell remarks from Judith, or any other hints of the series's close. One detail will make Judge Judy's last taped case stand-out among its other episodes: A glittery, bee-shaped clip in her hair that wasn't present during that final taping; Judith explained that this was a wink to the fans of JJ, and a nod to her Queen Bee Productions company.

Judith also explained that her enthusiasm for the job never waned during her 25 years on the job, and she was not in low spirits on that final taping day. Rather, she was reflective on her tenure on the show as "a job well done", with excitement about her new continuation series on IMDb TV, Judy Justice.

Judge Judy's longtime bailiff Petri Hawkins Byrd: Judy Sheindlin "didn't ask me" to join Judy Justice (https://ew.com/tv/judge-judy-bailiff-petri-hawkins-byrd-judy-justice/)

Viewers took notice of Byrd's absence when Sheindlin's new IMDb TV court show's trailer featured a new bailiff (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-HDYQO9Qm0). Byrd, who was Judge Judy's bailiff during the show's entire 25-year run, says he was never approached about joining the new show. Byrd tells EW after production wrapped in April, he turned his attention to his wife, Makita Bond-Byrd, a longtime Judge Judy producer who was scheduled for brain surgery. "I didn't have time to think about or ask about Judy Justice," says Byrd, whose wife just completed her third round of chemotherapy. As Byrd notes, the final season was taped remotely with him and the crew in Los Angeles and Sheindlin in New York City because of the pandemic. It wasn't until July that Byrd asked Sheindlin directly about his future. "She informed me I was not being asked to come along on the project," he says, adding: "My assumption is if you were going on to do something else, that you were at least going to ask me if I wanted to have the opportunity to audition for the role."

Judy Justice is basically Judge Judy: Will viewers seek out "more of the same" on streaming? (https://variety.com/2021/tv/reviews/judy-justice-review-1235095573/)

IMDb TV's Judy Justice is a "tricky sell" on a streaming service because it amounts to a 26th season of Judge Judy, says Daniel D'Addario. "It’s hard to imagine anything with less viral potential than Judy Sheindlin taking someone to task: To have watched television before is to be well-acquainted with the beats of this routine," says D'Addario. Except for one case involving a gig-economy worker, the rest of the show "could realistically have happened at any point in the past quarter-century," says D'Addario. So the question is will a court show format that thrived in daytime syndication work in the streaming world? "Streamers have mastered a great deal, but they haven’t quite cracked the most rigorously formatted shows. Netflix, for example, has struck out with talk shows featuring stars as disparate as Chelsea Handler, Hasan Minhaj, and Michelle Wolf; the great streaming game show has yet to arrive," says D'Addario. "Maybe these formats thrive as part of a routine — one watches Judge Judy in the afternoon, Jeopardy in the evening, and Colbert, Fallon, or Kimmel in bed. Or maybe they’re just slightly less interesting to viewers when left to their own devices. Watched in a vacuum, Judy Justice is competently made, starring practiced talent and crafted by producers who know what they’re doing. Taken as a series available on a platform, and in a streaming landscape, with many more options, it’s hard to imagine picking it. The best thing that can be said for Judy Justice is that it is deeply unsurprising. Another interpretation of that fact might be that, despite the opportunity to take a new setting and use it to spur innovation, Judy Justice is just more of the same."

ALSO:

Judy Justice is the "Hollywood Hogan" of minor arbitration shows (https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/nov/01/judge-judy-new-show-streaming): Judy Sheindlin's new show has been "described as a 'flashier' version of Judge Judy, although only the top percentile of Judge Judy acolytes would be able to spot any difference," says Stuart Heritage. "Sheindlin isn’t wearing the lace collar of old, and her robe is now burgundy instead of black, but this is by no means a reinvented wheel. The format of the new show remains exactly the same as the old one: a procession of dirtbags line up to publicly air their petty disputes, and Sheindlin interrogates them before making a decision. The show is so identical to Judge Judy, in fact, that the first episode falls into line without any real explanation. We see a courtroom. We see two bozos who got drunk and had a fight. And then we see Sheindlin pull a vaguely unamused face. A narrator announces 'This is Judy Justice' and then we’re off to the races. And since IMDb TV (and, honestly, who knew that was a thing?) is ad-supported, we even still get the old pre-commercial 'coming up' buffers to gee up our flagging interest. At first glance, it’s hard to know who – other than Sheindlin’s accountants – Judy Justice is for. Indeed, it has been reported that her main competition here is herself; CBS is aggressively broadcasting a series of reruns (which have traditionally always got high ratings) during the first volley of Judy Justice episodes, in the hope that casual viewers would prefer to watch easily accessible old episodes rather than seek out a new and hellishly obscure streaming service."
There are a couple of small tweaks to the Judge Judy format (https://tvline.com/2021/11/01/judge-judy-new-show-judy-justice-review-imdb-tv-how-to-watch/): "Damages can now be up to $10,000, double what they were on Judge Judy, and her judicial bench is now emblazoned with 'Judge Judy Sheindlin' in big letters, in case you forgot who’s in charge," says Dave Nemetz. "Plus, her robe is maroon now, not black!"
Judy Justice set has a "modern courtroom" and three new supporting players to appeal to a "more youthful fanbase" (https://variety.com/2021/tv/features/judy-justice-new-energy-1235099289/): The new courtroom incorporates a different wood color, marble columns and monitors that are built into the set. The show has also added Rasco, who previously served as the head of security at Sheindlin’s syndicated courtroom series, as the bailiff, replacing Judge Judy's Petri Hawkins-Byrd. Rasco is joined by Sheindlin's granddaughter and law clerk Sarah Rose, and stenographer Whitney Kumar. The casting of these three supporting players was to fulfill the “new energy” co-executive producer Amy Freisleben says the new show required. “There’s a more youthful fanbase that may come with IMDb TV, on all streaming devices,” she says. Executive producer and director Randy Douthit says that Rose, in particular, should appeal to young viewers because she is in her mid-20s and “can talk about social media."
Judy Justice represents an experiment for streaming (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/25/business/amazon-imdbtv-judge-judy.html): "For the first time, a service is trying to replicate daytime television’s traditional rhythm: New episodes will arrive five days a week and accumulate in a bingeable library," explains The New York Times' Brooks Barnes. "IMDb TV ordered 120 episodes of Judy Justice, the largest first-season order ever by a streamer, analysts say. Amazon has an option to order another 120." Lauren Anderson, IMDb TV’s co-head of programming, says of the importance of Judy Justice: “We see a space to become a modern broadcast network. While we have seen the ratings decline on broadcast, it’s not because audiences are rejecting the content. It’s about convenience and the delivery route.” Barnes adds: "Judy Justice is not without risk. Old Judge Judy episodes (there are more than 5,000) continue to run in syndication on local stations, and viewers don’t seem to mind the recycling. About seven million have been tuning in, a decline of only 11 percent from May, when new episodes were airing, according to Nielsen data. How much Judge Sheindlin does one planet need?"
Judy Sheindlin says the goal is to bring in at least half of Judge Judy's 8 million viewers to Judy Justice (https://nypost.com/2021/10/30/judge-judy-joins-streaming-with-judy-justice-court-show/): "The truth is, I think that my story, which I started 26 years ago after spending 40 years in the family court, is still relevant," she adds. Judy Justice features a new, bright set. “I changed up the robe,” says Sheindlin. “I went to the color board and said, ‘What looks good on me? What will reflect the light on my face? And I also think the new collar (on the robe) is a little more modern.” Sheindlin adds: “It’s a new show (and) you can only do so much. If you go into a theater you’re going to see comedy, drama, a ballet … you know what you’re expecting, and when you go to a court show … you pretty much know what to expect. Truthfully, it’s (the show’s) execution and its leader and who’s presenting the case. It’s really no different for me from what I’ve been doing but people will be able to pick up their phones and iPads and stream it on the go. I honestly don’t know what the future of daytime broadcasting is during the afternoon. There’s so much out there … but I just have the feeling that people are demanding that entertainment come to them rather than the other way around.”

Sox Entertainment Eyes "Judy Justice" Syndication Sale for Freevee Court Show as Syndicated Marketplace Hits Reset

After launching the first original court show on streaming with "Judy Justice" on Amazon Freevee, Judy Sheindlin could make history again with the first streaming show to sell in broadcast syndication.

Former CBS executive Scott Koondel’s Sox Entertainment, which distributes "Judy Justice", is actively exploring selling the show’s library — about 260 episodes — to TV stations for fall 2023 or fall 2024, sources tell Deadline.

“It’s extremely fluid tight now,” a station executive said. “There will be an opportunity for shows like Judy Justice to potentially get on the air while incumbents try to hold onto time periods at fever pitch.”

Cable syndication also is a possibility, I hear.

"Judy Justice" Scores Two-Season Renewal; Franchise Expanding at Freevee with Docuseries "Justice on Trial"
by Rosy Cordero
May 1, 2023

Amazon’s Freevee has renewed "Judy Justice" for two additional seasons and will expand the franchise with the docudrama, "Justice on Trial".

"Justice on Trial" is the third series created and executive produced by Judge Judy Sheindlin for the streamer and will be part of the new "Justice" brand, which also includes "Tribunal Justice", premiering June 9.

According to Freevee, "Judy Justice" has grown to be the service’s No. 1 Original program in hours watched, with customers viewing more than 150 million hours to date.

In its debut season, the program won the Daytime Emmy for Best Legal/Courtroom Program. New Season 2 episodes debut every weekday through June 9.

"Justice on Trial" will explore the American justice system including what children are taught in school, police diligence as opposed to overreach and individual rights versus the greater good featuring testimony and reenactments based on actual court transcripts.

The docudrama examines seminal rulings through a combination of sometimes-heated courtroom debate, lively civil discourse, and common-sense legal analysis.

"Judy Justice" Plotting National Syndication Launch in Fall 2024
by Nellie Andreeva
October 31, 2023

The plan for "Judy Justice" to foray into broadcast syndication is coming into focus. According to sources, the Amazon Freevee court show, created by and starring Judy Sheindlin, is being taken out to stations by Scott Koondel’s Sox Entertainment, targeting a fall 2024 launch.

As Deadline noted in May, when rumors about a potential syndication play first surfaced, the move would make the first original court show on streaming also the first streaming show to sell into broadcast syndication.

About 260 episodes have streamed on Freevee over the first two seasons. The show, which has been renewed by the Amazon free, ad-supported platform for two more seasons, will have close to 400 episodes available by the time of its planned fall 2024 rollout.

None of them have been exposed to linear viewers so "Judy Justice" would be considered broadcast syndication exclusives.

Scott Koondel’s Sox Entertainment, which distributes the Amazon Freevee show, has closed multi-year deals with major broadcast groups including Nexstar, Sunbeam, Cox Media, Weigel, and Mission Broadcasting in well over 100 U.S broadcast markets, including all of the top 10.

The company made the joint announcement with Amazon MGM Studios.

“We are thrilled to bring Judy Justice to linear television audiences nationwide. With Judge Judy Sheindlin at the helm, viewers can expect a compelling and thought-provoking legal experience in high definition for the first time in broadcast,” said Koondel, CEO for Sox Entertainment and executive producer of Judy Justice.

“I’m grateful that TV station groups have embraced this new innovative syndication model with talent that has been on broadcast stations for 28 years.”

Judy Sheindlin's Judy Justice cleared to compete against Judge Judy in syndication this fall (https://pagesix.com/2024/03/31/entertainment/judge-judys-return-to-tv-is-bad-news-for-old-bosses-at-cbs/)

Sheindlin's Amazon Freevee court show will debut in syndication this fall after being cleared in 95% of the country, despite CBS “trying to keep Judy out of the marketplace,” an insider told Page Six, which adds: "CBS was banking on local markets buying up reruns of Scheindlin’s old show, and was left gobsmacked when she hit the market with a new product for stations to buy. Unfortunately for CBS, a source says, they’re now stuck selling repeats of Judge Judy, which has less value in the marketplace while other stations have the option to air original shows from Judy Justice."
