In that the main characters (other than maybe, Vicki and Joan) being unsympathetic jerks?

If you don't believe me, take a look again at the episode about a missing girl's face on a milk carton.

Basically, the producers of Small Wonder (https://genaradcliffe.com/home/2018/8/13/tune-in-tonight-small-wonder) made a tone deaf (https://www.throwbacks.com/8-sitcom-episodes-that-were-way-too-dark-for-us-to-be-watching/) episode when it came to not knowing when to take things seriously and try to be funny. It's ridiculous how they switched gears (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoodDissonance) from "Oh yeah a family will never be the same again" to "Let's bury our faces in these chocolate cakes".
