Think about it. I've noticed the majority of today's cartoons, whether on TV or in the movies are geared towards both.(More so for the adults I think)

Tv like:
SpongeBob

Advertisers are 1 thing, the cartoons themselves are a completely different story. Cartoon network shows Bugs Bunny cartoons and all the commercials in betwwen are geared for kids. However, anyone with common sense knows those cartoons were originally made for adults not children.

A lot of kids love the Powerpuff girls(Including my little girl), but I know a few adults who watch the show as well.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of 'toons that are made just for kids. It's just that I've noticed more cartoons that are made now, have more adult humor in them.

I think that some cartoon series like Cartoon Network's
Justice League are aimed more for adult nostalgia buffs,and
some like the Nicktoons are aimed more for the kids.

Of course Boomerang channel is probably aimed for both audiences,the adult nostalgia buffs who remember watching them
as kids and their kids.

I'd like to defend Hanna-Barbera cartoons (pre-1980s, at any rate)

Although like Filmation's "Fat Albert"and American Greeting's "Strawberry Shortcake" Hanna-Barbera cartoons by the Reagan era became known as George Orwellian-censor-friendly shows ("Smurfs', anybody?:)),the 1960s Hanna-Barbera shows were actually cool. Judy Jetson was almost like Natalie Wood in Rebel without a Cause (Janet Waldo, her original voice, though a debut voice actor when the show appeared played the proto-CLUELESS/SABRINA character CORLISS ARCHER< before my time, on the raido in 1943-1956). (Quite a babe too).

Hanna Barbera had references to Bat Masterston, Ben Casey and Ed Sullivan and others that some kids might not have gotten.

In no way were shows like the following anywhere like the Smurfs (or competitos like spinoff studio Ruby-Spears's animated version of Punky Brewster), all of these being truly funny like Rocky and Bullwinkle

Animated movies nowadays have tried their best to please adults who are there with their kids. Children can laugh at the antics of the characters while the adults can laugh at the jokes. Films like "Shrek," "Monsters Inc." and Disney's latest "Lilo And Stitch" are loaded with gags and dialogue that only adults will appreciate.

TV, is still for the most part geared for kids, although many programs on Cartoon Network are hip enough for the old fogeys in their thirties like me to enjoy...

Cartoons are for everyone! I don't care what people think. Cartoons are made to make people laugh and spend time with your kids. I think cartoons are great.

Making cartoons for adults is not a new thing.

The Looney tunes cartoons were originally made for adults. The Flinstones, the Jetsons, Rocky and Bullwinkle(sp) were also made for adults.

I think the mix of adult cartoons vs kids cartoons is the same as it has always been.

Some are for adults, some are for kids. You can't group them all together.

The Jay Ward, UPA (theatrical and TV), Lantz, MGM, Hanna-Barbera (includes Yakky Doodle and Pixie and Dixie and Josie and Scooby and debatebly Charlotte's Web) and Warner Bros.cartoons were made for adults. However, kids were free to watch 'em, and "adult" doesn't mean adult like the inappropriate ads that block up my computer.

At least the Bugs, Flinstones and Yakky Doodles had good taste!

Anyone with even a teeny bit of "common sense" should realize that alot of the cartoons our kids watch today contain jokes that are completely out of their reach of comprehension.

Half of the jokes in Monsters Inc. and Toy Story were inside jokes
GEARED TOWARD THE PARENTS (ADULTS). My daughter didn't laugh when the fat guy who just "HAD" to have Woody...was acting all frantic over his toy collection and had them all in glass cases and what not, but I was hysterical.

Also, if you watch any of the CRAP on cartoon network you will see ALOT of the jokes woven into the cartoon itself are OVER the kids head. Why they do this I have no idea. I think the people in charge of production in this day and age have a very limited imagination, which is why we get so much regurgitated garbage like the new He-Man, Transformers, MTV Spider-Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. These are also meant to cash in on the kids who used to love those shows..US..the now adults.

Cartoons are for everyone.
Except for losers.

Most of the cartoons out there are geared toward children but cartoons like Family Guy, The Simpsons, Futurama, and King of the Hill are not for young kids.

Cartoons can be for kids and adults. Except for like. Blues Clues. But that's a Children's Educational Show. Parents could watch it with their kids, but they have nothing to learn.

Nickelodeon is geared toward mainly kids like Nick Jr shows and pre-teen shows that adults like because of 'real life' toons like "Hey Arnold, Rugrats, & that show that shows kids are on the skateboards.

Cartoon Network is geared toward teen agers and Generation X & Y with the Adult Swim & shows like "Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab, & Ed, Edd, & Eddy".
