Some of us on 'The Osbournes' board were discussing how it can sometimes be difficult for Americans to understand some English and Scots accents. I offered the opinion that it's not so much the accents that present the problem but the actual words themselves. This is the point where Miss Roxie Rickman dared me to throw forth some Scots slang cos she believed she would know what I was talking about. I thought this was a cool idea so I deceided to post this here on the Chit Chat where it would get a bigger audience.

OH! OH! **Raises hand!* I know what "shoogle" means! I know what "shoogle" means! I loooove that word, and I swear I am going to find ways to work it into my vocabulary. Buuuut, seeing as how I just came from the west of Scotland where someone told me what it means, it would be unfair to spill the beans just yet. A hint though, perhaps... it's a verb.

I don't remember exactly what "mingin" means but I remember you using it before, Mossopp. Doesn't it mean like stupid of annoying or something?

I'm not sure what the Scottish "bevvy" means, but bevvy is also an English/American word... it means like...a group, or alot of something.

And I think I know what bunnit means but I am not sure. I want to say some sort of hat? I don't know.....the other ones I erased from the quote, I have no clue on.

Er, does "Shoogle" mean "shaking"? I don't know how I thought of that....I doubt it's right though, lol.

Here's what the words really mean. Now you have to try'n work them into your conversations and confuse your friends! :lol:

shoogle - wobble
scud - to slap, although the phrase "in the scud" means a person is naked
mingin' - stinking, bad
daud - (pronounced 'dod') a piece or lump of something
bevvy - alcoholic drink. 'On the bevvy' means you've been out drinking
oxter - armpit
hoachin' - full of, infested with: i.e. 'the town was hoachin' with people'
glaiket - stupid-looking
feart - (pronounced 'feert') scared
corrie-fisted - left-handed
bampot - a crazy person
bowf - stink
bunnit - a hat
humph - carry
keek - to look or peer at something: i.e. 'take a keek at that!'
nyaff - an annoying little person
puntie-up - Giving someone a puntie means lifting them onto your shoulders
tig - a game, I guess you guys'll call it 'tag'
toty - very small
weans - (pronounced 'waynes') babies or young children
bumfle - a wrinkle or crease in material

I'm prolly using these in sentences wrong but:
1.) I am corrie-fisted.
2.) John-Paul (aka Sitcomwriter) is a nyaff.
and
3.) Weans are annoying, evil, lil things, and I neva want em.

laldy - to "give it laldy" is to do something with great enthusiasm.

grog - spit (another characteristic of the ned - they spit a lot)
