By "bottom half" I'm referring to top 40 Billboard hits that peaked at the 21 to 40 positions and didn't break into the top 20.
Here are some good ones that I included in my collection:
"Yellow River" by Christie- #23 Billboard hit in 1970.
"Albert Flasher" by The Guess Who- #29 Billboard hit in 1971.
"Wild Night" by Van Morrison- #28 Billboard hit in 1971.
"Summer Sand" by Tony Orlando & Dawn- #33 Billboard hit in 1971.
"What Are You Doing Sunday" by Tony Orlando & Dawn- #39 Billboard hit in 1971.
"Resurrection Shuffle" By Ashton, Gardner & Dyke- #40 Billboard hit in 1971. (If I remember correct, this song did fairly well in Chicago and charted higher.)
"Big City Miss Ruth Ann" by The Gallery- #23 Billboard hit in 1973.
"Painted Ladies" by Ian Thomas- #34 Billboard hit in 1973.
"So You Are A Star" by The Hudson Brothers- #21 Billboard hit in 1974.
"Star Baby" by The Guess Who- #39 Billboard hit in 1974. (This song was a top ten hit in Chicago on both WLS and WCFL.)
"Winners And Losers" by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds- #21 Billboard hit in 1975. (This song was also a top ten hit in Chicago on the WCFL survey.)
"I Got Stoned And I Missed It" by Jim Stafford- #37 Billboard hit in 1975.
"I'm On Fire" by The 5000 Volts- #26 Billboard hit in 1975. (This song reached the #12 spot on Chicago's WCFL survey.)
"Crazy On You" by Heart- #35 Billboard hit in 1976. (I'm very surprised that this song didn't chart higher on Billboard, #35 is pretty low.)
"Lorelei" by Styx- #27 hit on Billboard in 1976. (I'm also surprised this one didn't chart higher on Billboard.)
"I Need To Be In Love" by The Carpenters- #25 Billboard hit in 1976.
