Hazel and Barbara are at a county auction, selling lots for unpaid taxes.

Hazel bids on a tiny parcel, wins, and is socked with one assessment after another.

Is this the new Hazel? Would she have ever done this when living with George and Dorothy?

This was kind of dumb, but not outrageously so. You can picture the Hazel of old getting carried away and excited at an auction and bidding on something she thought was valuable without knowing for sure. Remember at the b/w auction show with Missy Hazel went there but sort of tried to keep Missy in line there. But unlike the Catwoman weightloss episode Hazel figures a smart way out on her own auction problem. She doesn't start balling and become an object of pity. She thinks and figures a way to overcome her situation.

Did you notice in this episode the fat bald guy who lives in the house next to Hazel's lot who later regrets not buying from Hazel is the same guy who was selling honey at his roadside stand? One thing enjoyable about Hazel is how they sort of used a family of actors to play different roles in different episodes.

I'm now watching Family Affair once a week too and interestingly there are a whole lot of Hazel side actors who appear in different Fam Affair episodes. The bald guy with a mustache and big buck teeth who played the little guy's boss and also played the boss of Barney the mailman appears in Fam. Aff. So do other Hazel bit actors, don't remember them all now, but I frequently see people who are now looking a little older than they looked on Hazel popping up in Fam Aff. Makes watching Family Affair just that more enjoyable. Sometime we ought to talk about Fam Aff, many interesting things there.

The Hazel of S1-4 would never have pulled such a boner. So sad to see the show go downhill in S5. Still watchable, to be sure, but not as good as the first four seasons.

Ah, yes. The piano episode from season 1. Hazel thought she had Missy under control, but she bought the piano anyway.

But back to the land auction, I really liked the way they wrapped up the episode. The scene between the lady Hazel beat out at the auction, and Hazel, was well-written. You can picture a situation like this whole episode actually happening, except the sudden pileup of assessments.

Well worth viewing, if you haven't seen the episode.

I did not notice the homeowner next to the tiny lot and the honey sales guy being the same person. I did notice the guy who claimed Steve hit him was the guy Noll recommended to George to re-do their kitchen (the whistler) from season 4. That guy has been on a lot of Screen Gems shows.

Also the cranky guy who befriends Harold in S5 is one of George's clients who ends up fixing the Baxters' water heater. He runs into Hazel and breaks her shoe, and they end up spending the afternoon together, while George stews with Patty Duke's father (William Schallert, who lived to a very old age).

I haven't seen Family Affair in quite awhile. I don't have the DVDs, but I did watch it when it was on MeTV. They dropped it just like they dropped My Three Sons. Since they are now having success with M3S, maybe they could give FA a try again.

Unlike M3S, at least all seasons of FA are on DVD (I think).

Also that guy who plays Harry Noll in season 4 had a few other roles in the show. I think he was in that auction episode from season 1 playing another guy, the husband of the lady Dorothy was trying to get to take the piano.

These actors playing different roles would make an interesting separate thread. This happened a lot on Beaver, too--with both adult and kid actors.

Yes, that's how I'm now watching Fam Affair from the commercial complete set. I had actually recorded the show off ME TV but they skipped a lot of episodes which made me mad so that's when I sprung for the commercial set. ME TV's season 1 was complete but all other seasons were missing episodes. I watched my ME TV season 1's then bought the set so I could see everything else without any skipped episodes. THey use the real Devol music too. Last time I saw this series was when I was a kid. So it's nice seeing it again. Sad though when you know how Buffy ends up. What a fool she was to do what she did (accidental drug overdose), but when you're young you don't imagine anything can harm you. She was a cute little girl.

The DVD's of Family Affair are good, episodes are uncut, the MPI studio did a nice job with those. MPI also did the Here's Lucy DVD's, those are good too with uncut episodes. Other DVD's I have from MPI are the complete series of The Mothers In Law and the short lived Dick Van Dyke variety show Van Dyke And Company.

The Doris Day Show DVD's are also from MPI but I don't have those, I've thought about it but am undecided if I want to have that series on DVD. The DVD's are said to have uncut episodes but they are speeded up/time compressed versions with run times in the 23-24 minute range.

I feel they really dumbed-down Hazel in that last season. She made so many stupid decisions. The land auction, the weight loss gym, the old jalopie, manufacturing chili sauce. Perhaps it was the absence of George keeping her on the straight and narrow.
