View Full Version : Antenna TV butchering Bewitched :(

They're getting much worse with their cutting of the shows. Today it was obvious they began the show after a scene had already started and before that scene even finished, they faded out to the opening credits.

It's getting to the point where the shows are becoming UNWATCHABLE!!!

They've been butchering Bewitched since they started airing it with airing heavily edited versions at 22 1/2 minutes. Logo is even worse with 19 minute episodes of Bewitched but I'm not sure they even air Bewitched anymore. I have the complete series DVD which is completely unedited so it doesn't matter to me.

Is there a site you can go to and get those exact times? How do you know they're showing those exact times for the shows? I can't imagine a viewer sitting there with a stopwatch in hand lol.

And weren't sitcoms originally made at 24 minutes of show? At 19 minutes of show, that's butchering a whole 5 minutes off. It's incredible they can get away with that!

I have the show on DVD but i'm always too lazy to pop in and change the discs. I'm waiting for the day these TV shows just come with the entire series on little USB ports you just stick in the TV and have the whole series in one place. This way you can pick any episode right from your remote and on screen menu instead of getting up and changing discs. I'm sure it's coming, if it's not here already.

Bewitched and Jeannie really need to move back to Me-TV where the shows were treated like the crown jewels they are.

That's unfortunate if Antenna TV is chopping up the Bewitched episodes. These retro channels just continue getting worse so I seldom watch them anymore.

Uncut episodes of Bewitched run a little over 25 minutes, 25:20 seems to about be the average run time per episode. Sony did a pretty good job with the DVD's, episodes appear to be uncut, if anything is edited it is minor.

Antenna TV is basically an infomercial station at this point. It is unwatchable. No-one cares about the cuts. I was too young to watch Burns & Allen, but lately started watching some shows. Right in the middle of a joke - cut to endless legal commercials. It is bad. Not worth the aggravation. IMO, they are the worst of the retro stations. I have noticed MeTV has started running more and more promos for it's shows. Just show the show I'm watching.

It's been said here that syndicated versions of half-hour shows run 22:30 approx, so I'm assuming that is Bewitched's length on Antenna TV. Logo runs it, or had it, and I've heard here also that their shows run around 19 minutes. 20 at the longest. It's a Living on Antenna is abnormally short at 20-21 minutes each instead of 23-24, for example. Shows like Alice & The Hogan Family are uncut on Antenna, again for example, but they may be time compressed.

It is unfortunate. You would think they could cut more subtly and not verge on being as bad as TV Land or Logo. Luckily the DVDs of Bewitched of every season are out and they're completely unedited.

Sony did do a commendable job with the DVD's of Bewitched. The season 8 episodes have two added bonuses, the Elizabeth Montgomery intros before each episode, and the "Bewitched will be back in a moment" bumpers before the final/tag scenes. :)

Oh, nice. I didn't even know about that. It would be nice if they could restore the correct opening & sponsors to the DVDs but I honestly don't see that happening. Season 8 is probably my least favorite season of Bewitched because of all the remakes. I much prefer the early Dick York seasons.

By season 8 I imagine they were running out of new ideas for scripts so they rehashed some of the previous ones. I also prefer the York seasons but the Sargent seasons have their moments with several good episodes.

Antenna sometimes has what I call mini-infomercials, and they're extremely annoying. They run about 5 minutes. Mute button is an absolute must, especially the attorney one. There's another one for some spray on makeup, and Lifelock.

The cutting right in the middle of a word is a common problem, and there is some sync problem with local ads, where the local channel and Antenna clocks don't match. It seems to affect primarily the middle break. It needs to be fixed but no one seems to care.

That's why I buy DVDs and watch them on there. Even the Diginets can't be trusted anymore.

It's really a shame these shows are getting butchered for more infomercial commercials.
I had high hopes that METV would have gone the route of TVLand in the early days. TVLand ran the shows in episodic order and UNCUT.
METV isn't butchering credits but their shows are running at 22:30 or 44/45:00 like everyone else's syndicated episodes. (well except for LOGO)
The latest is FETV which is completely cutting credits out of some of its shows (Green Acres for example)
Thank goodness for DVD and Bluray releases of many series, and here's hoping more come out to. At least for the most part those are UNCUT or at least closer to the original length than what is being shown on television these days.

I was in the States in February and saw some reruns on Atenna TV. I was disappointed to see how they were treating this (and other) shows.

I guess this is the way things are now - nobody seems to care about closing credits anymore :(

LOL I know what you mean. I stopped watching Antenna TV a long time ago because of that, and switched over to Buzzr Game Show channel. The other day, I was in the mood for something different. I don't know what I was thinking but I changed the channel to Antenna TV and the Facts of Life theme song was playing, so I said GREAT, I love this show, and settled down to watch. What happened next after the theme song ended was one of those long, dreary five minute mini-infomercials. This one was about old Jewish people suffering in poverty conditions. :( After sitting through it for 3 minutes, and becoming really depressed, I realized it wasn't going to end soon, so I switched the channel, and it was back to the Match Game on Buzzr. LOL

Yeah, I’ve noticed this too. A shame. But since I really love Bewitched I bought the first five seasons on DVD maybe 10 years ago. S6-8 I could care less about. For me the show JTS when Dick York left.

I almost had a heart-attack last night as Antenna cut the entire middle part of Serena's performance of I'll Blow You a Kiss in the Wind!!! IMHO this is one of the highlights of the latter seasons and should be considered untouchable - cut plot - cut comedy - cut Boyce and Hart's singing -- but don't mess with Liz in a miniskirt!!! Sacrilege!

My, my, so much frustration and so little doing anything at all about it. Or do you people just love suffering? I stopped watching classic TV shows on live TV ages ago and this was even before they started up with their 5-6 min. commercial marathon sessions.

You guys, when are you going to learn? I'll say it again to the hopeless here. BUY THE DVDs for cripes sake.

I just started up watching Bewitched again a couple months ago after not seeing it for several years. &, naturally I'm thoroughly enjoying the commercial free COLORIZED first season of Bewitched all on DVD. Every Wednesday (my Bewitched day) when I watch the beautiful color version with Sam in beautiful living color and that blonde hair, oh dear, so much better than gray haired Sam. I say to myself how could anyone rather watch this beautiful color show with that beautiful woman in drab black or should I say gray and white? Antenna TV in addition to their crime of cutting the show unmercifully they show the lousy b/w versions to boot.

So folks, wake up, join me and smile a while and buy the colorized seasons 1 & 2 and all the rest of the seasons on DVD and stop your whining. You'll thank me in the morning.

Antenna TV left my city a few months ago and I honestly don't miss it at all. Especially that poverty commercial showing a poor old woman freezing to death inside her tiny hut in the middle of nowhere waiting for her package of food that gets to her for only $19/month! It IS so depressing!!

They took my Bewitched away but with all those cuts they were making I didn't care because I have the dvds and I just pop in a random disc and click "play all" and have my unedited Bewitched on all day long. :)

And yes! The first season in color is great though I still want to get the b&w season on dvd just to have.

I now switch between Decades and Buzzr channels now and their commercials aren't as bad or long as Antenna's is. I also watch Cozi channel for Roseanne weeknites. All 3 of these channels are leagues better than what Antenna TV has become.

They were a great channel up until about 2 years ago when they started shoving in more commercials and less show. I wonder if they left my city because too many viewers were tuning out.

I’m with you on this 90%. The Internet IS mercurial and what’s there today may be gone tomorrow—especally with SONY’s and Warner Bro’s. takedown hissy fits. But the Internet is still fine for shows you’re curious about and just want to check out.

But for the shows you LOVE, owning DVDs IS practically a must. And the prices have come down a lot. I paid about $125 for my 5 seasons of Bewitched, which was a good price 10 years ago. Now you can get the whole series for half that. When I was prepping for my colonoscopy the day before the procedure, watching my favorite Bewitched eps was a great way to pass the time. It was nice going to my Bewitched wallet and lifting my favorite Aunt Clara episodes. (Poor Aunt Clara - Sam needs an electrician and Aunt Clara pops up Ben Franklin.)

There WILL BE times when you’re glad you have copies of a show you love that are your very own. So for the shows you really love, try and buy them!

Bewitched is one of the rare sitcoms that I can watch over and over and over forever and never tire of it. If I were on a desert island with only a handful of dvd's to have with me--Bewitched would definitely be one of them without question.

And now with streaming getting more popular and becoming the first choice of many viewers, people are unloading their dvds so i've been snatching up many bargains on Ebay of old sitcoms.

It doesn't bother me that they're used and I only buy from sellers that allow returns and list them as "Very Good" or higher in quality and so far have never been disappointed and building a good collection of classics.

Streaming sometimes edits the shows too so I 100% agree that for shows that you really love, the unedited dvds are definitely a must have!

I love the Aunt Clara episodes myself and adore that character. I love when she mutters gibberish to herself when someone chastises her or when she appears in the fireplace by mistake...and there's one episode I laugh out loud every time where she walks into a wall thinking she can go through it but can't.

Poor thing. She had a heart of gold, but boy, could she whip up a mess- like knocking out power along the East Coast. When she passed Bewitched began to JTS. Dick York leaving finished the JTS for me. So the first five seasons are all I need.

The Bewitched DVD's from Sony are great although I have the black and white versions of the season 1 and 2 DVD's. I prefer to watch those episodes in black and white as that's how they were originally seen. It's the same thing with I Dream Of Jeannie. I have the black and white version of the season 1 DVD.

Yes I’m the same way too. It feels much more authentic in B & W.

Nevertheless. I’m glad there are colorized sets for those who want them.
