Shonda Rhimes is celebrating her 50th birthday today. Rhimes grew up in Chicago and studied English and film at Dartmouth. She worked in advertising, earned an MFA at USC in screenwriting, and began writing for film and television in the mid-nineties. Rhimes wrote the Emmy-nominated HBO movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and features like The Princess Diaries 2.
In 2005, Rhimes started a TV production company, Shondaland. Her first venture into creating and producing for TV was a huge success. Grey’s Anatomy premiered on ABC in 2005 and is now in its 16th season. It has received nearly 40 Emmy nominations, including 3 for Rhimes herself. In 2019, it passed ER to become the longest-running primetime medical drama in American TV history.

Rhimes has gone on to create two other successful series, the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Private Practice, and the political drama Scandal. Shondaland is the producer of the current ABC series How to Get Away with Murder and Station 19. She is the creator of the upcoming Netflix series Inventing Anna.
