Amazing that Bixby was 28 years old when he portrayed this un-emancipated youth still beholding to his father.
I've started to notice this in several shows, seems like very poor casting. I've seen Kurt Russell play characters much younger than his actual age quite often (westerns mostly)

I don't think this bad casting, Bixby's character could easily have been a spoiled rich kid of 22 or 23 so the age differential wasn't that bad. In the Mayberry universe a much worse example of this was Gomer joining the Marines. Jim was 34 years old (and looked his age), beyond the age he could sign up. In those day the draft was going strong, Gomer would have been draft eligible in the late 1940's!

But he only had the intellect of a 12 years old. :D
